Recognizing the talent and achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC MUSIC AWARDS shines the spotlight on Canada’s fourth largest city, and the vibrant music scene that calls its home.

Honouring artists in 20 categories, which include two new categories this year – Classical Recording of the Year and Industry Person of the Year (full list below), the 2017 YYC MUSIC AWARDS will be taking submissions until May 31st for the 2nd annual gala being held on September 24th at The Palace Theatre.

Before submitting to YYC Music Awards please read the following in full:

Eligibility Requirements:

The eligibility period for the 2017 YYC Music Awards is between March 1, 2016 and February 28, 2017. This time frame will be strictly enforced, and we will not accept submissions for materials recorded outside this time frame.

“Release date” for YYCMA purposes is defined as the date of first shipment to retail, radio or posted online release date. Proof of online transaction or shipment may be requested. This applies to all submissions whether single, album or video!

People’s Choice category and Zackariah and the Prophets categories are excluded from this requirement.

Artists from the Calgary area, including Airdrie, Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Strathmore and areas up to a maximum 125 km radius of the City of Calgary.

Submissions Deadline:

To be considered for a 2017 YYC Music Award, submissions must be received by midnight on May 31, 2017. No extensions will be granted.

Submission Fee:

Please note, there will be a $5.00 per category submission fee this year. You will be taken to a payment page when you hit submit at the end of the form.

Zackariah and the Prophets Memorial Award Submission

Before submitting to YYC Music Awards please read the following in full:

This award is not about the most polished band or most professional yet, they may not even have more than a couple of demo’s posted so far but it’s about the band that is taking all those baby steps and embody possibility and promise, taking into account the criteria outlined below:

Progression: progression of skills, musicality, and presence in local scene.

Musicality: blend on instruments, interesting musical concepts, overall song layout and structure.

Originality: a unified and distinct sound, compositional arrangement, unique and interesting.

Direction: sense of unified sound and layout displayed in EP or sound samples. Cohesive throughout.

Social media presence: easily found online content. Information regarding releases, shows, general band/artist info. Open to artist with 2 or less independent releases.

Artists are required to submit an essay of 500 words or less, outlining why they think they should be considered for the Zackariah and the Prophets Memorial Award, based on the above criteria. This can include but is not exclusive to highlighting steps you are taking to build your band and brand, accomplishments you have achieved and where you are at in your career. Just tell us who you are and what you are about.

In addition, the YYC Music Awards is accepting volunteer applications leading up to and for the gala along with membership for CMSC – Calgary Music Selection Committee, who are our voting members.

Vancouver’s NINJASPY, a trio of blood brothers that have created a metal fusion of hard, heavy, hook-laden music that runs the gamut of reggae, surf and more will be releasing their next full length ‘Spüken’ due out April 14, 2017. The album is once again produced by GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mudvayne, Gallows) and Ben Kaplan (Biffy Clyro, Atreyu, Haste the Day) to follow NINJASPY‘s 2013 EP / graphic novel ‘No Kata’ and their 2007 debut ‘Pi Nature’. The crowd funded album that raised $15,000 for the band to record the new full length features a culmination of nearly a decade of songs that have been narrowed down to an epic 10 track experience to demonstrate all their downbeats to breakdowns to their weaving of reggae, hardcore, metal and much more.

Wacken Metal Battle In America For The First Time!

Wacken Metal Battle USA is proud to announce Boston round 3 winner UPHEAVAL. The band will now join previous round 1 and 2 winners COFFIN BIRTH and GOBLET at the city final being held on April 19th at ONCE Somerville. Boston round 3 was held on Tuesday, March 29th at ONCE Somerville along with other competing bands Lung Leather, Birnam Wood, Concilium. The winners of the Boston final will join Philadelphia round winners POWER THEORY and COPRSE HOARDER at the national final (city and date to be determined).

For over a decade at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, independent metal bands from around the globe have been performing in front of thousands and competing against one another for one to be crowned champion of the world along with winning multiple prizes (prizes info). For the first time ever, Wacken Metal Battle USA is coming to America for its inaugural year and will be hosting qualifying rounds in various cities. The national champion of those battles will perform at the 2017 festival taking place from August 3rd – 5th. How it works:

Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals, selecting the top band to move forward to the national final (city and date to be determined) with one being selected to perform at the 28th edition of Wacken Open Air. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.

RULES:

All bands, that wish to participate in the Metal Battle, must read the following rules and guidelines. Bands who send in an application automatically agree to the rules and terms.

Your band doesn’t have a deal and isn’t about to sign to a label in the near future.
Your band can easily play a 25 minute set consisting of your own songs. (No Covers). Full set performance time is 25 mins.
PA, lighting, and sound engineer will be provided for all bands.
Backline arrangements TBA.
The bands must bring their own instruments such as guitars, bass, drum breakables, keyboards and effect pedals and may also bring and use their own guitar amps.
To keep the changeover times as short as possible, bands with left handed drummers will play as first or last band. All bands have to follow the directions given by the promoters or stage manager.
Semi playback is not allowed. All bands must play live. Background orchestrations are ok as long as all vocals, guitars and bass are live. Intros / interludes are also ok.
Jury of respected music industry folk will decide the winners each night.

If a band overruns its allotted performance-time, then the band-members should be aware of the fact that in this case their sound will be faded out. The running order for the concert will be released a few days before the event takes place.

Please note:
Travel for the winning band to go to Germany is at their own expense and accommodations at the festival will be in the form of camping in the VIP area.
Full professional back line will be provided for performance.

With time travel tested themes of science fiction, swords and sorcery, the band’s lyrics are born from snowy winters, hot practice spaces and pages of dog-eared paperbacks. Formed in 2015, Vancouver’s THIS GUN FOR HIRE is a genuine band of brothers that have built a long-lasting friendship through the music they play. Unleashing a power punch of their rock tinged melodic metalcore / post hardcore; the band has unleashed their debut album ‘Something A Little More Sinister’ out now as of March 31st. The album was recorded with engineer and producer Roger Swan (K-OS, Battle Axe) to present their first clutch of original songs to showcase to the world. The twelve track release displays a keen awareness of pace and dynamics. Moving deftly from the seething chaos of the eponymous opener to the grandiose and melodic epic of ‘To The Fallen And The Faithful’ and back again for the staccato grunt of ‘Barn Burner’ to finish the record. Taking cues from Alexisonfire, Every Time I Die, Underoath, Beartooth, The Holly Springs Disaster, the band describes their sound as “fast, heavy, sincere, atmospheric, and meaningful”.

New Album Out ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’ via Test Your Metal Records

Vancouver thrashers TERRIFIER announce they will be hitting the road for a mini tour in April plus will be headlining this year’s 2nd annual CEMR MetalFest in Calgary, AB on April 8th along with other festival performances at Armstrong MetalFest and Metallion Fest this summer. The show dates are in support of TERRIFIER‘s new album ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’ released in January of this year via Test Your Metal Records to follow their 2013 EP ‘Metal or Death’ and 2012 full-length ‘Destroyers of the Faith’. Incorporating jackhammer drums, bulldozing bass-lines, a twin-lead attack that leaves posers pulped in its wake, and vocals that can level mountains, TERRIFIER’s motto could well be ‘thrashing is our business…and business is good’.

ARMSTRONG METALFEST reveals the set times for their 2017 line up being held on July 14th and 15th at the Hassen Arena in Armstrong, BC. This year’s headliners include Boston’s tech death / thrash titans REVOCATION, Vancouver’s reggae-metal fusion NINJASPY, Canadian 80’s thrash legends AGGRESSION and Vancouver Whammy Award Best Local Metal Artist winner GOLERS among many more from across the country. Situated in the Okanagan Valley with the beautiful backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, ARMSTRONG METALFEST, now in its ninth year, is British Columbia’s largest gathering of metalheads from across Western Canada and beyond.

Her third full-length album entitled “Raices” was released on November 29, 2016 to follow her sophomore album “Risin’!”, an album that was dedicated to love in all its forms whereas “Raices”, meaning ’roots’ in Spanish, is a new kind of musical love letter.

Bringing forward the sounds of traditional acoustic instruments from Cuba and her native Ukraine, “Raices” is fully comprised of organic instrumentation, impressively blending roots-reggae and Afro-Cuban rhythms with folk-pop lyrics and melodies paired by Auresia’s sweet-as-honey voice.

Recorded between Cuba and Canada, “Raices” is a true labor of love. Trading in the simple fun of her first two records for a more refined sound, Auresia delivers a raw truthful interpretation of everyday life and the realities of being a strong woman. The one thing that hasn’t changed is her deep-rooted passion for Reggae and Latin music. Although most of her lyrics are sung in English, she masterfully weaves in Spanish phrases as well as words in Lakota, the native tongue of the people of the Sioux tribes.

Auresia is not the kind of artist you encounter every day. It’s this very element of surprise that makes this singer-songwriter one of the most exciting young Canadian talents emerging in the industry today.

Isolation has most certainly bred inspiration in the shape of SLAGDUSTER. Hailing from Grand Forks, B.C, the band is name after a slang term local to their area for a piece of machinery that was used in the mines over a hundred years ago.

“We are the only four musicians in our small town driven to form a progressive metal band.” says vocalist Shane Sherman.

Inspired by such giants as Goijira. Sikth, Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Between The Buried And Me, SLAGDUSTER offer a progressive, groovy, creative, unique and heavy sound.

It’s been a few years since their debut album ‘Nature.Humanity.Machine’ and SLAGDUSTER is ready to unleash their follow up ‘Deadweight’ due out on May 5th, 2017.

“Naturally our sound has come a long way since our debut release in 2010. The music is more complex, and much more developed, still heavy, but even more groove based. “”Mother’s Milk” is one of the more structured arrangements on the new album. We like some of the riffs so much that we couldn’t avoid bringing them back a couple times. It starts off with a strong driving march feel, before picking up speed and racing around hairpin corners, drifting effortlessly while navigating multiple sonic terrains smoothly from start to finish. Lyrically, the message focuses on a downward spiral of dependence and desperation, characterized within a story about an unhealthy mother/son relationship, a dark contrast to the song’s upbeat tempo.”

Like the ancient machine they are named after, SLAGDUSTER work hard to draw art from base material, they’re sound is meticulous and lengthy. All nine of tracks on ‘Deadweight’ have been very slowly and carefully crafted over the years. No songs were scrapped; all were completely revamped continuously for years. SLAGDUSTER put way more effort into collaborative song writing, which has significantly advanced their original sound. Each track contains a variety of things, ranging from ripping riffs and tremolo melodies to soft transitional parts and psychedelic interludes on top of constant heaviness and groove.

Of course, these songs are transformed in SLAGDUSTER’s live show, which vocalist Shane Sherman describes as “high energy, bordering on ridiculous, with offensive banter and annoying antics from an attention hungry front man.
