Montreal, Canada’s In Solastalgia, EitherWay releases the debut EP “Morii”, out now as of Friday, October 8th.

The EP is a visual and instrumental post / progressive rock experience created from the mind of Jean Philippe Hébert. The six-song recording’s goal is to merge together a post-apocalyptic screenshot of a non-utopic universe within its 29-minute atmospheric journey.

“I’m is trying to create a complex, visual listening experience, like a short movie or a trip, in which the music itself changes intensity, emotions and comes in waves, there is a playful side that works with a nostalgic side,” explains Hébert.

Heavily influenced by film scores, In Solastalgia, EitherWay will likely continue further down this path, becoming more and more complex, with bigger arrangements and more instrumentation, when Hébert attends film school.

Stating that he is a rather shy person, it took him some time to get In Solastalgia, EitherWay off the ground. About a year ago, he started showing his music and received enough positive feedback that it encouraged him to go ahead with this project. He also became fascinated by the idea of Solastalgia and the effect that environmental change has on our collective mental health.

In Solastalgia, EitherWay is recommended for fans of Opeth, GodSpeed! You Black Emperor, Russian Circles and Mogwai.

About:
Jean Philippe Hébert is an academically trained guitarist. Originally from Québec City, JP was educated at Notre-Dame-De-Foy campus, a private college in the outskirts of Quebec capital. He grew up surrounded by nature with one brother and two parents in the medical field.

As a young boy, JP would admire a guitar that had been hung on the wall of his house for ages, until he found the courage to ask for the instrument and some lessons. As a teenager, JP played a lot, concentrating his efforts towards a heavy style of music, until he started college and began studying classical and jazz. He is also a multi-instrumentalist; playing not only guitar but piano, drums and bass as well as banjo, mandolin and other specialized guitars.

His musical abilities landed him many gigs with prominent local Quebec City acts like Elliot Maginot, Lisa Leblanc and Les Soeurs Boulay to name a few. For over a decade now he has been lead guitarist on many of these projects both in-studio and live settings.

He is currently working on a solo project “In Solastalgia EitherWay”, which is the fruit of many years of work; it was built around the philosopher Glenn Albrecht idea that describes a form of emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change. This project combines JP’s love for nature and music. His influences vary from Godspeed You! Black Emperor to Goat and to heavier things like Opeth. You can hear all these worlds colliding in his music, somehow perfectly placed in chaos.

The goal is to have a 6 song EP entitled “MORII” recorded by 2021 that will then be followed by a series of concerts. The concerts themselves will be worked on as moving portraits, as he will work closely on visuals with videographers. This project is both musical and visual.

The latest release for New England metalcore act Fathom Farewell is the lyric video for the fourth single “Nameless City” off their upcoming EP “Kraken”. The band took their favorite five tracks from a pool of demos that would cohesively work together to come up with the new record and have high expectations for its reception as they explain:

“Well, we’ve had the great fortune to perform the new stuff a few times for a live audience and let’s just say they never went even half this hard for the old material. I’ve never been more confident in any musical release I’ve been a part of in my almost 2 decades playing music. They’re gonna love it as much as we do.”

The single “Nameless City” was entirely inspired by an HP Lovecraft short story of the same name. This story focuses on a lone explorer traversing the ruins of an ancient city with no name. The farther he dives into the city, the more devious it seems, growing narrower, and damper, and darker until the explorer notices large reptiles emerging from the darkness while the light dies. The story’s imagery and environment description comes alive with heavy breakdowns and intense vocals.

The writing process for Fathom Farewell is very simple and streamlined. Vocalist Alex Cohen writes all lyrics; guitarist Steve Almon wrote the instrumentals for this past EP, presented it to the band and they laid everything down seamlessly. Moving forward, new guitarist James Frost, bassist Dustin Black, guitarist Chantz Mello and drummer Casey Albiero will be contributing instrumentals. In order to alleviate pressure, they stay far ahead of each release in terms of writing. Lyrical inspiration comes from Cohen’s environment, things that concern or inspire him to speak out on certain subjects whether it be mental health or oppression or even just a good ol’ concept track like this single.

Those looking for a new take on metalcore should find Fathom Farewell of interest, especially those with an interest in August Burns Red, Coheed & Cambria, and System of a Down.

Nova Spei is a Francophone groove metal band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They are releasing their second album “Sequentis” this November via label Bam&Co-Heavy. The 12 track record comes in at just over 45 minutes of music spanning a wide range of metal influences.

The first single off the album “Qui Sème Le Vent” is already out and fans have been eating it up. The band expects the rest of the album will be devoured by fans of groovy, djent and progressive metal. The band explains the theme behind the song and what they are trying to accomplish with the album:

“We try to give listeners something to reflect on, lyrics that represent their day-to-day reality. We created this album as a more ‘’metal’’ album, with lots of energy and powerful riffs. The basis of the single is that some people despise others, they have no respect for their neighbors. But sooner or later the wind picks up and they reap what they sowed.”

Nova Spei got together to create something new in the local music scene as they had been missing the stage for quite some time. The current lineup consists of Dany Soucy (Rhythm Guitarist), Dany Duplessis (Vocals), Julien De Carufel (Drums), Nicolas Dumais (Bass/Back Vocal) and Stéphane Filion (Lead Guitarist).

“Sequentis” was written and produced by Nova Spei, it was mixed and mastered by Anthony Chognard and the album artwork was done by Filip Ivanovic.

About:
NOVA SPEI, is a Francophone progressive metal band from Montreal Quebec. They were formed in 2012 by Dany Soucy (guitar) (Dook, Legion) and in 2014, Nicolas Dumais (bass) and Dany Duplessis (vocals) joined the lineup. Stéphane Filion (guitar) joined the band in August 2018 while Julien De Carufel (drums) arrived in August 2021.

The band is a heavy sound coming from the guitar and the drums reminiscent of Deftones, Meshuggah and Tesseract. Vocals are influenced by Killswitch Engage, Staind, and Breaking Benjamin. The progressive side on the bass is inspired by Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree.

Their rhythms depict texts that leave room for reflection. A reflective metal with a Djent flavor.

They presented their first album “Éponyme” 2017. In 2019, they were tour support for Anonmyus’ 30th anniversary Quebec tour of the same group, which added to their 50 date tour to promote the debut album.

The production and direction of their first full length were done in the band’s home studio in Champlain, QC, and it was mixed/produced/mastered in France by Anthony Chognard (Smash Hit Combo, CHSprod). Their lead single “The Man with 1000 Smiles” is in constant rotation on Quebec RadioX 98.1FM and their song “Ma Muse” can be heard during the Canadiens hockey games at the Centre Bell in Montreal.

2019 marked the beginning of the recording of their second album, which is entitled “Sequentis”, which will be released on November 12, 2021 via label Bam & Co Heavy.

“Decryptor” is the second single off the upcoming album “Metemtechnosis” from Canada’s The Design Abstract. The album is a continuation of the sojourn into the epic sci-fi world the band has created, explored by their deeply narrative songs. This single is the band’s magnum opus; they state that everything that is present in this album and the last – Technotheism (2021) can be found in this track. They explain further:

“Decryptor is quite simply the cumulation of our sound to this point: every key element of this album, as well as Technotheism, are on display here. The chorus is a massive and crushing display of rhythm, while almost every other section of the track is exploring melody and technicality in different ways. If you liked the orchestral parts of past releases, you won’t be disappointed; if you liked the industrial or electronic elements, they’re there as well. If you liked the crushing low vocals or the sparkly clean ones, it’s all in this track! Compositionally we pushed ourselves in every way we could, and I think the result speaks for itself.”

Overall, The Design Abstract can be summed up as devastating blast beats merged into breakdowns which giveaway to detailed orchestral work, and synth layering. Crushing guttural lows, contrasted with crisp clean vocals, and of course riff after riff of technical-yet-memorable guitar work.

The single tells the story of the saviour of Aberration Omega: the fabled Decryptor. Described as “an angel of digital reckoning” and “the archfiend of machines”, the Decryptor character is the key to the rebellion breaking through the walls of the oppressive temple, and discovering the secrets which will be uncovered in the next album.

Impeccable storytelling and songwriting are the primary focuses of The Design Abstract‘s music, and this upcoming full length is sure to grab the attention of anyone who enjoys narrative concept records and bands such as Fleshgod Apocalypse, Soilwork and Septicflesh.

Calgary’s formidable modern metal act Every Hour Kill’s has been shunning and breaking genre rules throughout their career with each release surpassing the last in musicianship and experimentation. The latest offering “Vacua” due out on October 8th is the biggest departure yet and although not everyone might like it; guitarist and primary songwriter Sacha Laskow wrote what he felt rather than trying to stick to a template of what the band ‘should’ sound like. According to him, fans of progressive music like himself are typically open to a range of sounds, influences, and emotions. He explains the sound change further:

“This record is a culmination of a dark, tumultuous fucked up year in the world and in my personal life, as it was for many people around the world. As lucky as I am to still have work and my basic needs met, the emotional rollercoaster still affected me strongly and I ended up unemployed for a period in 2020, and thus this EP was born. It is both more human in that I collaborated more strongly with new songwriters and Jei on vocals, but also more mechanical as I also wrote with the assistance of AI creation tools, and most of the instrumentation is programmed MIDI. Every Hour Kills is a rotating collective ensemble featuring the core of ex-Divinity / Enditol guitarist and producer Sacha Laskow, bassist Brent Stutsky (ex-Breach of Trust), along with vocalists Jei Doublerice (Despite Exile, Abiogenesis) and Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster (ex-Out of Your Mouth).

Each of the five tracks on “Vacua” were written for the EP, with no filler and nothing left on the cutting room floor. Track “Intransigent” was co-written with Calle Thomer (Vildhjarta, Humanity’s Last Breath) and tracks “Euclidian” and “Tenebrous” were co-written with Chris Wiseman (Currents, Shadow of Intent). The EP was produced, mixed, and mastered by Laskow along with EP artwork done by Erisis Red.

Formed in 2016, In/Vertigo delivers non-stop memorable performances at jet engine decibels of a Boeing 747. The band has made a name for themselves touring and constantly gigging around Western Canada. Performing high-profile gigs with international acts such as Diamond Head, Age Of Electric, Pop Evil, The Wild!, and The Lazy’s, they have proven to many they are a young and upcoming band still hungry for larger stages and even bigger crowds.

Their self-titled demo, recorded under Ronnie Champagne (Alice In Chains, Janes Addiction, Social Distortion) had a limited run of 500 and subsequently sold out. Their four-song debut EP “Sex, Love & Chaos” was released during July 2019 via Rockshots Records.

In/Vertigo is the quintessential rock n’ roll act, who comes in with a sonic molotov cocktail of sound, aimed at the music world who unapologetically thirsts for classic/hard rock.

The extreme progressive/power metal group IMMORTAL GUARDIAN are once again taking the epic sounds of their critically acclaimed concept album “Psychosomatic” to the road, this time embarking on the “Brovember Quaratour.” The band’s week-long trek throughout the west coast begins Friday, November 5th at Pubrock Live in Scottsdale, AZ, includes an appearance at RuinFest VI Fest in Santa Ana, CA alongside bands as diverse as Internal Bleeding, Mictlantecuhtli and labelmates Voices of Ruin, and concludes the following Friday, November 12th at Toot’s Tavern in San Francisco, CA with more shows to be announced. These live shows will see the band’s expansive sounds accompanied by a visually entrancing laser/light show, along with support from Los Angeles-based Venezuelan-American progressive-metal act Sifting. The tour sees IMMORTAL GUARDIAN once again taking the sounds of “Psychosomatic,” their acclaimed new concept record, on the road following a six-week tour in August and September that dazzled metal fans nationwide. The album has been lauded by Metal Temple for its “melody and power, two things displayed in a smashing way throughout this album” and led Metal Rules to call the group “one of the most interesting bands that have emerged in recent years on the international power metal scene.” Video clips for the title track, “Candlelight,” and “Phobia,” the latter of which featured a guest appearance by Angra guitarist Marcelo Barbosa, have captured the ears of heavy metal fans worldwide, while their videos for “Clocks,” “Lockdown” and “Read Between The Lines” have earned praise from the likes of MetalSucks, Metal Injection and Gear Gods.

After making a splash via their 2018 full-length debut “Age of Revolution” – which featured its own fair share of creative music videos, including the “Armageddon”-meets-telenovela clip for “Stardust” – and through tours with the likes of Marty Friedman, Exmortus and Powerglove, IMMORTAL GUARDIAN gathered in Las Vegas at the beginning of 2020 to record their second album. As the spread of COVID-19 and the subsequent pandemic began to ensue, shutdowns around the world began being enforced, resulting in the band completely scrapping the record that they had been working on and writing and creating a new thematic record about their emotions surrounding current events. The resulting “Psychosomatic” was a truly multi-national record, with guitarist/keyboardist Gabriel Guardian – known for his uncanny ability to play the two instruments simultaneously – remaining in Las Vegas, singer Carlos Zema recording his vocals from his home in Brazil, drummer Justin Piedimonte tracking from Montreal and bassist Joshua Lopez recording from IMMORTAL GUARDIAN‘s native Texas.

Canada’s Ravenous will be unleashing their new album “Hubris” on October 22nd via Feast Beast Records for North America plus Europe and for Asia via Spiritual Beast with exclusive bonus tracks “Cakaw Te Partiro” and “一瞬千撃” for the Japanese version.

Before the full-length officially drops, the band is hosting two CD release shows for Alberta fans in Edmonton and Calgary. The Edmonton event will be hosted on October 9th at The Starlite Room, which will include a live DVD recording in support of “Hubris” and for their hometown crowd in Calgary, they will be performing on October 15th at Dickens.

The band hints at what attendees can expect from their live show:

“First-time fans can expect our performance and costumes to be akin to going to a Queen show in their early pub days, but with fast-riffs, blast beats, and more crowd-singing than you can shake a claw at! Canada’s Snakeblade has a new single out, and now, death metal fans can take it all in over at Heavy Blog Is Heavy who is premiering “Foul Sorcery of Flame and Shadow” at the following link HERE.

This is the sixth track out of the ten presented on the upcoming album “The Curse” and according to Mike Redston is a full-fledged five-minute roller coaster. He explains more in detail:

“This track is absolute bananas. I consider this to be my most technical song off The Curse with some super fun riffs. Guitar wise it’s got flavours of everything from Archspire to Metallica. And lyrically, it’s a complete homage to Game of Thrones – fans of the show will no doubt be able to spot the reference. It starts full-on with a relentless attack of blast beats and shredding. Then about halfway through you get this complete shift to a half-time neck-snapping section. It’s closed out by a silky smooth acoustic outro to seal the deal.”

“The Curse” is the second album from Snakeblade, following “The Kingdom”, which came out in 2020. It is quite an evolution, growing in both complexity and scale with the addition of a session drummer to handle the kit. Mike Redston formed the solo project in the midst of the pandemic, as a distraction. To deepen the escape, all his lyrics surrounded fantasy concepts from his favorite video games and movies. The name Snakeblade comes from his first character in Dungeons and Dragons which was a bugbear.

For fans of death and black metal both new and old, Snakeblade is recommended for fans of Dimmu Borgir, Death and Skeletonwitch.

“This new song (The Red Mage’s Seduction) is a wild but multi-faceted thrill-ride. A burst of jolting riffage launches the track, and as it grows more feverish it provokes a long, throat-ruining scream. The drums (performed by session drummer Dennis Kraakman) hammer and spit like machine guns as the bass bubbles and the guitar writhes in flames. There are chilling moments when slashing chords, slithering arpeggios, and flickering spectral solos sound like magic spells cast in sound by a viciously demented sorceror and the vocals descend into monstrous croaking growls, only to have the song erupt again in chaotic incendiary gales. The song’s feeling of magical mystery and ominous peril emerges again and rises to towering heights, elevated by grand synths and gigantic booms. Once there, an extravagant extended guitar solo lights the listener’s nerve endings on fire without relinquishing the music’s aura of sorcery run amok. Canadian epic symphonic metal band, Operus has a new music video for their single “Lost” off their latest album “Score of Nightmares” released through German label Pride & Joy Music during June 2020.

The vision behind the new video is that of a journey through an inner self-created metaphoric world of being lost along with the feeling of self-doubt and the inevitable anxiety of running out of time. The video’s purpose is to demonstrate that we all need guidance and that although our time here isn’t infinite, what we do with our “sands of time” is the most important.
