It’s become a Halloween tradition for St. John’s, Newfoundland duo Artach to treat their fans and friends with some sweet candied black metal. This year, the band has reached way back in time to 1982 to revisit the classic song “Countess Bathory” by Venom, a band that has had an immense impact on them and upon black metal.

“Hell, they coined the phrase “Black Metal” with their album of the same name, so we felt it was a great choice to select “Countess Bathory” for Halloween as it’s about the Hungarian noblewoman Countess Elizabeth Báthory who murdered countless young women between 1590 – 1610. We added our own minor touches to the song and added a part for Lilita Arndt of Ieschure who is the Countess in our version of the song. We hope you enjoy it, Happy Halloween!” explains the band.

About:
Canada, St. John’s, Newfoundland’s black metal duo Artach unleashed their latest album “Sworn to Avenge” this past June via Depressive Illusions Records.

“Sworn to Avenge” is the second album from Artach, following up 2020’s “Chronicles of a Black Winter”. Fans can expect more of the same compared to the first, but it pushes the envelope a little bit. Artach embraces evolution and aspire to play tighter, and have a more professional sound, but never sound overly polished.

Artach’s process is a collaborative one between the duo, the genesis of the songs are arranged on guitar by Sruthán and very roughly recorded at home. After getting together, they record drums and flesh out the song in an afternoon and by then the song is pretty much ready for the studio recording of guitars, then bass, and lastly vocals.

Artach is recommended listening for anyone interested in raw black metal and those with an interest in Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, and Satyricon.

Barbosa explains the track:

“Sound Of Rain is a soundtrack for a resting session at the end of a long and tiring journey or just an exhausting day. In every journey, there is a moment when we sit down, take a deep breath and try to make sense of all the learnings, mistakes and lessons we collect along the way. It is part of the learning process and it feeds the creative and constructive loops of any thought or idea we might be forming. Our subconscious does this process automatically during our dreams when we sleep. So, Sound Of Rain talks about owning this process, about Lucid Dreaming, by the sound of pouring water, in a comfortable and warm environment, where we lead the process of making sense of all what we learned so far in our life journeys, what is yet to discover and what path should we take to get to the final goal. In this case, the formation, comprehension and harvesting of the perfect Idea, the one that represents the best version of ourselves, a Hypercube on the top of the mountain. In order to transmit this message, elements of percussion, finger-style classical guitar, exploring harmonic features of the instrument, and organic rhythmics were used, over smooth by dynamic harmonic progression were implemented”

Terra brings a combination of musical, audiovisual and artistic experience that translates the personality and ideas of Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Lucas Barbosa, resulting in a musical journey for those who love music and exploration of the new.

“The idea of Terra was always there, I believe. I have been composing and writing songs since I was 15. I needed a platform to structure and back these songs. This platform should allow me to combine some passions of mine: folk and metal music, traveling and photography. When I was around 20, I came up with the concept of TERRA, a project that would combine all the influences that made the musician and the person I am, in an organic manner, which would allow me to tell my stories of discoveries and exploration, including my experiences traveling through Brazil and throughout the world. It took about 10 years to actually find the environment and opportunity to bring this idea to life by recording Hypercube and kick-starting this journey.” comments Barbosa.

Terra’s first record is the outcome of the combination of elements put together to tell a story of a journey of growth and self-discovery, that frankly, could be the tale of every human being at some point in their lives. Ten songs are there to paint a picture of the artist’s personality and explore each step of the way with the respective deserved depth. Although heavy metal is the glue that unites all the musical nuances presented on this album, “Hypercube” does not shy away from a rich range of influences such as American Bluegrass, Country Music, Classic Rock, Classical Music, Western Folk, traditional Brazilian, Caipira and Sertanejo music along with passages of Samba, Capoeira, Bossa Nova and many others to convey its message. Lucas Barbosa was responsible for playing almost all instruments, including rhythm and lead guitars in all their forms (electric, classical, 6 string, 12 string), bass, Brazilian guitar (or Viola Caipira), Andean guitar (or Charango), Pan flute (Andean flute), harmonica, percussions and piano, in addition to performing all of the vocals in the songs.

Montreal, Canada’s Thrash La Reine is sharing their second single “La Cage de Fer” in support of their new album “Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer” being released via Quebec metal label Bam&Co. Heavy (Anonymus, BARF, Dizzygoth, Nova Spei) on October 29, 2021.

“Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer” is the third release from the band following “La Foi, La Loi, La Croix”(2019) and “Le Métal Est Notre Langue” (2018). It is the band’s attempt to make a metal opera about French Canadian stories, which will shine some light on francophone folklore presented in an energetic and catchy fashion.

The track “La Cage de Fer” is inspired by the Québécois folklore of Marie-Josepht Corriveau. A woman who lived in New France during the 18th century and was sentenced to death by a British court-martial for the murder of her second husband along with speculation of witchcraft. She was hanged for her crime along with her body hanged in chains.

“This is another really important story that is part of French Canadian folklore,” says vocalist/guitarist Renaud Baril. “This song is really slower and darker than the rest of the album with mellow verses and a more aggressive chorus. It has a more of a ‘doom metal’ feeling.”

For “Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer”, Thrash La Reine worked closely with producer Francis Perron (Voivod – The Wake) to create an album of 13 tracks: 9 full songs and 4 instrumental interludes, taking the band on a hard turn from their classic metal/thrash roots and into folk metal territory. Overall, the concept album will connect with many local Quebec fans, but the band’s goal is to also expose French Canadian culture to more metalheads around the globe.

“‘Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer’ is an album about French Canadian folklore. Most of these folk tales occur at night, in the cold countryside of the province of Quebec. We made an album that reflects this cold and dark atmosphere. For example, we used down-tuned guitars and bass to create a sonic atmosphere that seems to come from the depths of the Appalachian Mountains. Many of these stories happened in the 18th century during festivities; we also tried to capture the festive aspect of these legends, including a lot of gang vocals. We incorporated some traditional instruments to this album like mandoline, acoustic guitar, strings, accordion, and cowbell! The kind of singing and harmonies we use on this album are also reminiscent of traditional chants.

These French Canadian folk tales are all about ghosts, witches, sins, and the devil himself! It fits really well with the metal imagery! The album touches on a lot of different styles: fast, slow, sad, happy songs with either coarse or clean vocals. This album captures different colours and emotions.

As the themes of the album are really similar, we did a conceptual album with an epic introduction and some transitions between the songs.”

«Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer» sortira le 29 octobre via Bam&Co. Heavy

Les Québécois Thrash La Reine partagent un deuxième extrait «La Cage de Fer» à l’appui de leur nouvel album «Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer» qui sortira via le label métal québécois Bam&Co. Heavy (Anonymus, BARF, Dizzygoth, Nova Spei) le 29 octobre 2021.

«Notre-Dame-de-l’Enfer» est le troisième album du groupe après «La Foi, La Loi, La Croix» (2019) et «Le Métal Est Notre Langue» (2018). C’est la tentative du groupe de faire un opéra métal sur des histoires canadiennes-françaises, qui mettra en lumière le folklore francophone. Le tout est présenté de façon énergique et entraînante.

Le morceau «La Cage de Fer» s’inspire du folklore québécois de Marie-Josepht Corriveau. Une femme qui a vécu en Nouvelle-France au XVIIIe siècle et qui a été condamnée à mort par la cour martiale britannique pour le meurtre de son deuxième mari et des spéculations de sorcellerie. Elle a été pendue pour son crime avec son corps suspendu par des chaînes dans une cage de fer.

«C’est une autre histoire vraiment importante qui fait partie du folklore Québécois», a déclaré le chanteur/guitariste Renaud Baril. «Cette chanson est vraiment plus lente et plus sombre que le reste de l’album avec des couplets mélancholiques et un refrain plus agressif. Elle a un côté plus “doom metal’’.»

Nous avons fait un album qui reflète cette atmosphère froide et sombre. Par exemple, nous avons utilisé des guitares et des basses accordées de manières plus graves pour créer une atmosphère sonore qui semble venir des profondeurs des Appalaches. Beaucoup de ces histoires se sont passées au 18ème siècle lors de festivités; nous avons également essayé de capturer l’aspect festif de ces légendes, en y incorporant plusieurs voix de groupe. Nous avons aussi incorporé des instruments traditionnels à cet album, comme la mandoline, la guitare acoustique, violoncelle, l’accordéon et la cloche à vache ! Le genre de chant et d’harmonies que nous utilisons sur cet album rappellent également les chants traditionnels.

Ces contes canadiens-français parlent de fantômes, de sorcières, de péchés et du diable lui-même ! Cela correspond vraiment bien à l’imaginaire métal ! L’album touche à beaucoup de styles différents : des chansons rapides, lentes, tristes, joyeuses avec des voix rauques ou claires. Cet album capture différentes couleurs et émotions.

Comme les thèmes de l’album sont vraiment similaires, nous avons décidé de faire un album conceptuel avec une introduction épique et quelques transitions entre les chansons.

“This song is more in a prog metal feeling. He’s a man who dreams of living on another planet without the human race. He can’t stay with the human race anymore…” adds the band.

Formed originally as a Dream Theater cover band under the moniker MetroTheater, it wasn’t too soon after that drummer Thibaud Pontet (Eternal Flight), guitarist Ayman Mokdad (Alien Encounters), keyboardist Rodolfo Lima Sproesser (Goiana, Tahra, Heretic, Floyd Rose cover Pink Floyd), bassist Florian Guidat and vocalist Emmanuelson (Ellipsis, Rising Steel, Hydroflame) were keen to create something more.

It came under the suggestion of main composer and guitarist Ayman Mokdad to the rest of the band that he had written original material inspired by the concept of the “Venus Syndrome”, in which the Earth undergoes runaway warming and the oceans boil off and is viewed as the greatest threat to humanity’s existence (more info here).

From those lyrical and musical ideals, Venus Syndrome offered up their self-titled debut album during April 2020 all while being an international collaboration between musicians on two sides of the globe. Rodolfo Lima Sproesser is based in Brazilian while the rest of the group is in France.

Carefully crafting power melodies, intricate hard rocking rhythms and soaring vocals inspired by the likes of Russell Allen (Symphony X), Warrel Dane (Nevermore) and Ray Adler (Fates Warning), the band is ready to introduce their next recording and the sophomore full-length “Cannibal Star”.

Recruiting Simone Mularoni (Domination Studio, Ultra-Violence, T/L Rhapsody, Eternal Idol, Eldritch, Elvenking) for mixing and mastering, the new album is a more mature production compared to their self-recorded effort. On “Cannibal Star”, Venus Syndrome showcases eleven tracks for fans to not just enjoy its melodic progressive metal groove, but also go beyond the listening experience and understand the message behind their music.

“Humanity will disappear if each one of us, each individual do not contribute to safeguarding it. Art, and particularly music is a healer and can help us reach the target and build something strong for our kids and their kids hopefully.” says guitarist and composer Ayman Mokdad.

The band decided on the tracks not just on record, but how they would be best performed for a memorable live experience and the importance of its messaging for saving our planet and humanity.

“There’s an amazing live show that goes with these songs, that’s why there is an instrumental ouverture, an instrumental interlude, and an ending part on the song “Contaminate Me” that we can play with the audience for several minutes. They can expect all the energy and power of the universe. We want them to sing our songs long after the show.”

Sun Below Presents A Fuzzy Stoner Soundscape In “Chronwall Neanderthal” Off Upcoming Album

Self-Titled Album Out Nov 19th

Sun Below has a new release coming out, a self-titled, full-length concept recording that follows a figure, the Holy Drifter, on his journey through visions and across time.

The album clocks in at over an hour spread across nine tracks, the first single being the introductory track “Chronwall Neanderthal”. The song title came about while heading to a gig and passing Cornwall. The band started spitballing titles for a song that would debut that night, and Cornwall became Chronwall which would eventually become the mountain range depicted on the album cover. As the opening track, it is the most direct and hard-hitting song on the album and it sets the tone for the remainder of the album. Sun Below explains the concept behind this part of the album’s story:

“Chronwall Neanderthal was one of the first new tracks written for the album and was the last new song we had an opportunity to experiment with live before the pandemic shutdown. It is a more raw and direct track than many of our longer slow-burning jams, but still maintains the groove and feel present within our signature sativa rock sound. The song explores the origin of the sacred strain of ancient herb that becomes a focal point of the story later in the album, and how the Neanderthals of the distant past harvested it to their advantage against rival tribes. The intensity of the music demanded a more aggressive vocal delivery than used in the past, resulting in a pulse-pounding album opener.”

The lyrical subject serves as almost a prelude to the rest of the album, as it takes place in the distant past and plants the seeds for the future. The track contains a more aggressive vocal delivery than usual, which was born out of the need to match the driving intensity of the music.

Sun Below’s heavy stoner doom is recommended for fans of Black Sabbath, Sleep, and Electric Wizard.

Sun Below is a heavy stoner/doom power trio from Toronto. Playing a signature brand of self-described Sativa rock, a combination of fuzz, volume, and heavy grooves, Sun Below seeks to spread their infectious, rollicking sound to the masses.

Inviting their listeners to get into the groove and the headspace of the music, Sun Below is the perfect combination of a mellow trip with an energetic Sativa boost.

The trio of Jason Craig (guitars/vocals), Garrison Thordarson (bass/backing vocals) and Will Adams (drums/backing vocals) specialize in loose, long burning jams that worship at the altar of tone, riffs, and smoke, but also brim with raw bombastic heavy metal rock to keep the energy up high. Smoke up, tune down, play loud, burnout.

Still relatively new, but reaching towards the light and maturation, Sun Below have been hard at work sharing the stage with the likes of Black Mastiff and Chron Goblin; releasing three EPs: Black Volume EP (2018); Black Volume EP II (2019); Black Volume EP III (2019) and a music video into the haze. With a new stoner sun set to rise in 2021, the power trio will release their first full-length debut on November 19th to keep the fuzzy momentum going.

Western Canada’s largest decibel-breaking metal festival, LOUD AS HELL is proud to announce it will be hosting its 10th edition in 2022 from July 29th to 31st at the Dinosaur Downs Stampede Grounds in Drumheller, AB for live extreme music and camping.

For its 10th year, LOUD AS HELL is making a gigantic roar for metal bands from across the globe to apply and have the opportunity to unleash the inner beast on their outdoor stage with Alberta’s badlands as the perfect backdrop.

For LAH’s 2021 lineup, the music event featured an assortment of forty top-tier artists from Western Canada over three headbanging days that included a special reunion performance from main headliners Into Eternity with former vocalist Stu Block along with Planet Eater and Arrival of Autumn (Nuclear Blast).

The sold-out 2021 lineup was scaled down to only Canadian bands due to international artists being unable to perform in the country because of border restrictions and guidelines stated by the federal government for Covid pre-cautions.

For the 2022 lineup, LAH will be showcasing artists from Canada and beyond with a strong belief that there will be fewer restrictions for international performers entering the country. LOUD AS HELL event organizers will be closely monitoring guidelines and updates from Alberta’s provincial government.

LOUD AS HELL has hosted hundreds of Canadian and international bands annually since the first metal jamboree in 2012 with exception of 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.

Boston’s Fathom Farewell will be unleashing their new EP “Kraken” on October 22nd via Blood Blast Distribution. Before it officially drops, the New England metalcore powerhouse is sharing the latest music video for the single “Save Your Breath”, a track about being misunderstood, which is a common theme that has followed band founder and vocalist Alex Cohen throughout his life as he explains in further detail:

“From as long ago as I can remember I have been very energetic and maybe to some even at times overbearing. I’ve learned over time how to filter some of my actions based on who I’m around so I don’t interfere with their natural process of getting to know me. However, before I had a proper grasp on who I am, I definitely rubbed people the wrong way at times without intending to. I feel pit bulls specifically experience this every day. They are some of the most compassionate, empathetic and caring creatures we have on the planet and yet due to the misbehavior of a small few they are stigmatized as vicious and threatening. This was the main point I was considering when writing the song, I want it to be a voice for anything or anyone that’s persecuted for being misunderstood.”

Fathom Farewell‘s new EP “Kraken” was produced, mixed and mastered by Chris Piquette of No Boundaries Studios and the album artwork was done by Dixon of Intuitive Design. It will be the fourth release from the band following Consume The Earth (2019), Decomposition (2017) and Drowning Limits (2015).

Lyrically, the “Kraken” touches upon many things from our relationship to ourselves to our relationship to each other, through a metaphor of mental health being represented by an unfathomable sea creature.

Heartfelt, and powerful, Fathom Farewell is recommended for fans of Coheed & Cambria, System of a Down and Northlane.

Over the last couple of months, Canada’s Ravenous have been whetting our appetites for their latest offering “Hubris”. Now the main course is ready to dive into. The album is currently streaming on Decibel Magazine and will officially release on October 22, 2021 via Feast Beast Records (NA/EU) / Spiritual Beast (Asia).

The majority of the album was written in two weeks by vocalist R. A. Voltaire and guitarist Jake Wright who take an initial riff as the starting seed which is nurtured with chorus or pre and post-

Choruses laid upon with verses and bridges representing a slight departure in intensity or just “overall power-metalness”. That skeleton is then recorded in their home studio and distributed across all band members to implement changes – each member presents new or modified ideas pertaining to their instrument, and when the overall structure is confirmed, the lyrics are finally written. The band explains their method in their own words:

“The idea is not only to create a melody that resonates with listeners, and not only write inspiring, creative lyrics, but to also tie them together in a way that makes sense sonically and intuitively to the song (and of course, allows the singer to breathe at some point!) Each song on “Hubris” has been carefully penned as a cautionary tale reflecting the motif of arrogance and downfall. Those finalized demos become our listening material for months, as we carefully craft alternate versions and sections, even modified during the recording process.”

Ravenous takes performance, writing, and musicianship seriously, but allows tongue-in-cheek humour and pop culture references to resonate through the songs. From the symphonic Sabaton-esque “Carnage in Carthage” (best served with a shot of fireball and a meatball sub) to the straight rock n’ roll anthem “March of Hunger” (best served with a bong rip followed by taquitos and a slurpee) to the extra enjoyable, folk metal drinking song “Claw is the Law” featuring The Dread Crew of Oddwood’s accordions and mandolins, paired obvious, with White Claw.

Each of the ten tracks offers something different, so whatever your poison, whatever your midnight snack, Ravenous has the perfect musical accompaniment. They are recommended listening for fans of Sabaton, Unleash the Archers and Falconer.

“Hubris” was produced by Ravenous with mixing and mastering done by Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, Opeth, Firewind) along with album guests Vincent ‘Jake’ Jones of Aether Realm, Heinrich Yoshio of Aether Realm, Mathias Blad of Falconer, Nina Osegueda of A Sound of Thunder, The Dread Crew of Oddwood (Full Band).

“Hubris” releases on October 22, 2021 with a regular edition and a Japanese version with bonus tracks.

Rockshots Records is proud to announce their newest signing of Latvian classic rockers QUICKSTRIKE for the release of their debut album “None of a Kind” for early 2022.

Establishing their permanent lineup in 2017, the quintet has been performing authentic, high-quality rock n’ roll all over Europe as an unstoppable freight train gig after gig. Their momentum has even landed them a performance at the Baltic region’s largest motorcycle festival “Kurland Bike Meet” in 2018.

With the emergence of such bands as Greta Van Fleet, the sudden popularity of the Queen biopic, and the Guns n’ Roses reunion, they all point to one thing, good ol’ rock n’ roll is slowly preparing for its long-awaited return to the spotlight. A no-nonsense experience, Quickstrike offers the feel of raw guitars, sweet tones, genuine vocals, and real emotion by five musicians with true synergy. Each song on the upcoming album is an event of its own and it’s all real to reel.

The writing process for the record is an all-around chamber. Lyrics are mainly written by vocalist “Piggy” and rhythm guitarist “Ritchskies”. While drummer “Fourleaf Graves” very often adds a melody in his head for a song. Instrumentally, Quickstrike‘s songs have a pattern of “Ritchskies” constantly giving birth to riff after riff at each band practice or sometimes making them up on the go, he’s been dubbed “the riff machine”, and the band just builds from there.

“None of a Kind” will feature eleven tracks with plans to release three singles “None of a Kind”, “Rebel Radio” and “Cheats n’ Liars”.

Canadian heavy metal powerhouse STRIKER is back from the grave!

With rumours running rampant of the band calling it quits after they posted an image that was titled “RIP Striker 2007-2021” on their social media earlier this week. The award-winning shredders are excited to reveal that it was all just an ambiguous post that got fans speculating on the band’s future and was made to prepare them for the new music.

“We are finally ready to share our new single Deathwish. Inspired by 1980s AOR with a modern twist, Deathwish is a heavy metal banger we can’t wait to play live someday soon!” adds vocalist Dan Cleary.

The single is the first taste of new recordings since releasing their Juno award-winning album 2018’s “Play To Win” along with it being Striker‘s introductory track with new drummer Jonathan Webster and bassist Pete Klassen who join the band in 2019.
