The Sacramento-based quintet GRAVESHADOW – who deftly mixes symphonic/gothic metal with elements of doom, thrash and epic progressive power metal – have unveiled “The Swordsman,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, “The Uncertain Hour.” The band’s third album will be released July 15, 2022. “The Swordsman” is also special as it features guest vocals from Chelsea Murphy (Dawn of Ouroboros, Cailleach Calling, Tegmentum). GRAVESHADOW will also begin their West Coast tour on the same day at Barmadeggon in Tulare, CA, performing alongside Pacific Northwest blackened progressive-metal group VINTERSEA on “The Uncertain Hour Tour 2022” through Saturday, July 23rd at Cafe Colonial in Sacramento, CA. “I’m really excited to release ‘The Swordsman’ which has kind of snuck up on me as another favorite off the record, explains GRAVESHADOW vocalist Rachl “Raxx” Quinn. “The interplay of the clean and harsh vocals was something I was thrilled with the outcome on. The way they support each other really adds a great dynamic to the song. As a band it was great to have Chelsea guest on the track, her performance is absolutely incredible!”

“The Uncertain Hour” – produced by Miss May I guitarist Justin Aufdemkampe (Clutch, War of Ages), mastered by Alberto De Icaza (Crobot, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) and featuring artwork by Roman Ismaylov (Battle Beast, Beast In Black) – sees the new lineup for GRAVESHADOW continue to refine their enticing mix of symphonic, gothic, doom, and epic progressive-metal elements, now augmented by the newfound energy that has been brought into the band by the soaring melodic performance of new vocalist Rachl “Raxx” Quinn and the rumbling rhythm section of new bassist Luci Rae and new drummer Bones Padilla (formerly of labelmates Cultural Warfare). The returning guitar duo of William Lloyd Walker and Aaron Robitsch once again deliver a beautiful display of guitar histrionics that tastefully mixes searing shred with a warm melody. Graveshadow are back on the scene with a story to tell. Intertwining melodic highs and crushing lows to sweep listeners away on a journey of self-discovery, loss and the will to carry on.

GRAVESHADOW‘s previous album, 2018’s “Ambition’s Price,” was given accolades by Metal Utopia for being “a great record with lots of great moments for fans of Nightwish and The Birthday Massacre.” Metal Nation praised “Ambition’s Price,” declaring that “GRAVESHADOW has taken what has become a somewhat complacent and stagnant style of metal and breathed fresh life into it, creating something vibrant and memorable.” The fantastical lyrical themes that were explored by the band on “Ambition’s Price” – their debut record for M-Theory Audio and the follow-up to the group’s incubatory 2015 debut full-length “Nocturnal Resurrection” – were applauded by critics and fans alike. Vancouver’s Thirteen Goats are inspired by classic American death metal acts like Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, and they have their feast of a debut album ready for discerning metalheads the world over. “Servants of the Outer Dark” is a sonic trip that winds down the most twisted sections of extreme metal’s memory lane on a journey to wicked new horizons. The band weaves together conventions from numerous extreme metal subgenres on songs that range from topical to tongue-in-cheek—some are overtly political, while others are about things like cooking and eating your enemies. The first single off the album is “Return to Ruin”, which vocalist/guitarist Graham K. Miles explains in detail:

“Return to Ruin came from a place of deep anger with a number of institutions and systems that I feel are failing the current generation—predominantly governments and large corporations that are waging war, both literally and economically, against everyday people around the world. From the widespread mismanagement of a global pandemic to increasing wealth inequality, an ongoing environmental crisis, a rising tide of political extremism, and now a new Cold War with Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, we are living in the midst of extremely dark times—and the people who are supposed to shepherd us through them seem to be leading us to the slaughterhouse instead of towards greener pastures.

“All of the current live band members have roots in Eastern Europe—we have one Ukrainian (me), two Russians, and an Armenian. But all of us are against the war and against people who use power unjustly. This song is intended to be a call to arms—a protest anthem that invites listeners to question authority figures and the systems they’ve set up, and to burn those systems down if they’re not working so we can start over with something better. Like we say in the lyrics: “Sacrifice the ones you’re serving; ask yourself what they’re preserving.”

Heavy, hooky, theatrical, and over-the-top, Thirteen Goats takes the standard death metal recipe and turns it on its head without sacrificing raw power. They liberally add flavours from a wide range of other metal subgenres including tech death, melodeath, brutal death metal, groove metal, thrash metal, black metal, and even grindcore, resulting in a well-blended and tasty layered sound that is approachable for any metalhead.

The album was produced by the band, mixed and mastered by Diego Fernandez-Trujillo, and the album artwork was done by Jeremy Famir. It is suggested for fans of Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, and Deicide.

This past April, Toronto’s My Hollow marked their return to the Canadian metal scene with the release of their new EP “Fighting The Monsters”, which features guest vocals from Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork). The band supported the EP with the very loved puppet video “Vultures” and a cartoon for the EP’s title track. The new record boasts the heaviest music that they have written along with the addition of keyboards to add a new layer of epic melodies.

With a cohesive mix of epic riffs, today the band is sharing their solo playthrough for “Hell Or High Water” played by guitarist Danio Pirrone. The guitar parts for the song were originally written by bassist Sean De Faria.

My Hollow started via the internet many years ago and has had some lineup changes since then. As they have matured, so has the music and they are excited to share their latest version of themselves with the world. The band expects newer fans, as well as established ones, will be able to find tangible qualities to enjoy about the new EP. The new tunes don’t stray too far from their back catalogue, but they do possess more of a mature approach to the songwriting. The addition of keyboardist Matt Williams has also added a new dimension to the My Hollow sound. The band is suitable for fans of modern metal, especially those with a penchant for Fit For An Autopsy, Gojira, and Lamb of God.

The definitions of the word hollow describe My Hollow fittingly. With intense riffs and passages seamlessly giving way to lower, heavier parts in a lock-up, chunked out style with mutes leaving empty space in an otherwise chaotic sequence.

Based out of the Toronto area, My Hollow boasts a cast of independent metal journeymen, hungry to be heavier, tighter and more engaging with every song. Applying advice and drawing experience from performing alongside some of Canada’s biggest metal exports; The Agonist, Cryptopsy, Threat Signal, Beneath The Massacre among others. My Hollow as a whole can draw from a multitude of influences, not only from metal but from other genres as well, reflected in both their recorded releases as well as their live performance. Described by Danish webzine Power Of Metal as “five pissed off Canadians ready to tear my head off!” As well as “all the subtlety of a two-ton anvil slamming down on a set of pearly whites” by US based heavy metal blog, Heavy Metal Time Machine.

My Hollow has two official releases, 2012’s ‘Cold Dark Days EP’ featuring four demo versions of songs which were reworked and reimagined on 2014’s ‘On Borrowed Time’ full length release featuring My Hollow’s most refined and focused work to date.

Like any band, My Hollow has had its highs and lows. Being selected as a finalist for the annual Wacken Metal Battle Canada 2013 solidified My Hollow as one of Toronto’s, as well as Canada’s top metal acts and announced themselves to a broader spectrum of listeners. Although narrowly missing out on a spot to perform in Germany at heavy metal’s premier festival the experience proved to strengthen the bands resolve and galvanize their confidence in the process.

While the band’s recorded releases give the listener an idea of what My Hollow is about, the live performance is where My Hollow truly shine. “With a crushing wave of energy, and sound, My Hollow filled the venue with their effervescent presence. The lads never disappoint on stage,” is how Toronto based metal publication Metal Master Kingdom described their experience.

With a new EP “Fighting The Monsters”, which includes guest vocals from Bjorn Strid (Soilwork) due out in 2022 and an ever-evolving sound and live performance, My Hollow strive to become an ever-present staple in the Canadian and global metal scene and will stop at nothing to leave you hollow, and wanting more.

Vancouver’s Rebel Priest has been bringing its eclectic brand of rock n’ roll to fans for years in a true unadulterated, unapologetic fashion. A little bit greasy, a little bit sassy, but 100% committed, they have released four records, with a fifth on its way this year. “Lesson In Love” is the name of the upcoming EP as well as the first single, an untraditional ballad, like a love song sung by a Tommy gun. According to the band, it’s about going through the trials and tribulations of loving something – the ups, the downs, the spirals, but without the direct subject being a person. The band explains further:

“It’s open-ended in that it is what you love or love doing and how it’s a journey that can always find a way home. There’s always that one thing in your life that keeps you going, a person, a hobby, a theology. No matter what your vice is, it always comes at a price. You have to go through the blood, sweat, and tears to get what you need outta it and it doesn’t always come easy. This is your education, your lesson in love.”

When people put on the new record, Rebel Priest intends for them to forget about everything else, take a break from the grind, and get pumped! Whether you’re working out, going out, or down and out, put it on and play it loud! Get into it and go wild! Their music is fluid, they find a riff and then follow it where it wants to go. They say it’s just about finding the groove and cruising the wave.

Rebel Priest is headed out on tour with Toronto’s Deadwolff this summer, and spectators are in for a rock n roll treat – guitarist/vocalist Benny Kemp is the embodiment of a denim tornado; that guy will (and has) break his legs to party on stage! Drummer/vocalist Nate Pole is a groovin’ attitudn’ mean machine behind the drums that will sometimes make a wood chipper look like a pencil sharpener on those skins. As for vocalist/bassist Jayme Black, he’s a bit of a mouthpiece and likes his bass real gritty.

The trio just wants to bring rock n roll back to street level, when it was outlaw music for the underdog, so expect a greasy, sweaty, down and dirty rock show. They are recommended for fans of Motörhead, ZZ Top, and Rose Tattoo.

RockshotsRecords is proud to announce their latest signing of Italian melancholic metallers SilentLie for the release of their sophomore full-length “Equilibrium” this coming September to follow 2015’s “Layers of Nothing”.

Always drawn to the dark side of emotions, “Equilibrium” proceeds along this path. It stands on modern heavy tones and an obscure mood that can be compared to bands like Ghost, Ozzy Osbourne, and The Cure. Spreading their dark wings, drums, and bass, SilentLie builds a wall of sound on which the guitars dance with tombstone keys while a powerful female voice embraces the listener with gritty, but catchy melodies. Many of the songs on the album, thematically, deal with the eternal struggle between good and evil, with lyrics introspective and personal. There’s a maturity to the music that acts as a pendulum swinging between 80s liquid verses and gloomy, almost doomy, parts.

“Our first EP, “Blood Under Snow” was a collection of five obscure and atmospheric tracks, while our first full length “Layers of Nothing” featured dark/gothic influences with some old fashioned Sabbath riffing. The new material on ‘Equilibrium” reveals a more focused sound with a blasting production. It’s deep, heavy, and gritty with a dark outline. It’s a collection of 10 heavy songs, a journey in the dark without fear.” adds the band.

“Equilibrium” was mixed in the U.S.A. by Grammy Award winner Dave Hagen at Dark Horse Studios (Mastodon, Evanescence, Alice in Chains). The album is due out on September 30th.

SilentLie was formed in Trieste, Italy in 2005. In 2007, they recorded “Behind My Face”, a demo that gave the band several opportunities. In 2008, the song “Silence of Your Mind” appeared on two compilations: The Funeral Vol.2 (for the American label 272 Records) and Maximum Rock Attack (for the Magazine Maximum Rock).

In 2009, the song “River Of Torments” was part of the Blood Sisters film soundtrack, from which a video was also extracted. In 2013, the band released the EP Blood Under Snow, a collection of five obscure and atmospheric tracks and in the same year, the video of the single “Regret” was filmed. In 2015, the debut full-length album “Layers Of Nothing” was released by Bakerteam/Scarlet records, later followed by the video of the title track. The album featured dark/gothic influences with some old-fashioned Sabbath riffing. After a hiatus due to personal reasons, SilentLie returned in 2021 to begin work on their second album to be mixed at Dark Horse Studios in the USA by the Grammy Award-winning Dave Hagen. The new material reveals a more modern and focused sound with a blasting production, but SilentLie still holds its identity: deep, heavy, and gritty with a dark outline.

“Veil Of The Reaper” is the final song on Our Dying World’s upcoming album “Hymns of Blinding Darkness”. The song starts immediately – pounding double bass and guitars flood the soundscape as the first verse comes in. Over the course of the track, vocalist David Ainsworth tells us of the process of dying complimented by beautiful leads, gang vocals, dueling solos, and melodies culminating in a catchy melodic chorus. This song touches on every element that makes a great melodic death metal song and goes on to add a rough and heavy breakdown, forsaking orchestration along with heavy and grueling riffs that are reminiscent of their first album “Expedition”. The band shares their thoughts on the new single:

“It was the song that pushed us all out of our wheelhouse and got us to a new level of being comfortable with the level of musicianship in the band. The solos and leads in the songs are easily the hardest we’ve ever pulled off as a group. When we heard where the leads and solos were taking us, we decided to give this song an all-or-nothing approach, so we threw everything we possibly could into it to showcase where we’re going with this new lineup and the levels of the players in it. We wanted to also show the difference of the last record, which was considerably more death metal oriented, to the melodic direction we’re taking.”

For Our Dying World, the atmosphere is extremely important to how their music is written, and Graham Southern, who handles keyboards and orchestration, is well versed in taking all the feelings and ideas from the band and making them socially accessible. This is especially important in “Veil Of The Reaper”, which touches on subjects of loss, missing loved ones, and inspiring figures.

The band calls their previous release ‘primitive’ in comparison to what is in front of them now. The addition of keys and orchestral elements has pushed them into a new and specific field of metal that to them, feels like the realm they were intended to be in. This new direction for the band will be a welcome one among metalheads who are interested in Nightwish, Lamb Of God, and Wintersun.

Over the last few years, Los Angeles’s Our Dying World has gone through a tremendous evolution of sound from thrashy death metal of their debut EP Expedition to the symphonic and melodic keyboard-oriented stylings of bands like Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, and Dimmu Borgir.

Formed in 2018 by drummer/guitarist Tom Tierney (ex-Whiplash), the group has played shows all over the USA in their short time together, bringing their sound from the fabled Sunset Strip in Hollywood to the New Jersey Metalfest where they opened for Metal Mike of Halford.

Brutta out of São Paulo, Brazil, and the UK featuring the trio of Adriano Ribeiro (Athemon) (guitars, vocals), Tom MacLean (Athemon, ex-Haken) (bass), and Gledson Gonçalves (drums) are fresh, eager and ready to melt the faces off metalheads around the world. They have their debut self-titled album coming out this June, which is a formidable introduction to this new band of seasoned, professional musicians. Right now, the band is streaming the title track off the album via its premiere on Bravewords HERE.

The opening track on the full-length, it’s about letting yourself be transformed by Brutta’s aggressiveness, and admiring its uniqueness while being taken over by the transformation process. Brutta is what everyone will become, so watch out! The band explains further:

“We treasure this song a lot, as it was one of the first composed by us. It has an open evil chord followed by an explosion blast beat with a heavy bass seal. It’s the sound that never stops providing you with madness energy! The song is direct and precise. From its wicked atmosphere and obscure melody lines, we believe fans will be very curious about what’s to come!”

What follows after the title track is a high-speed, onslaught of blackened death metal spanning eight tracks, which is at times tense, occasionally experimental, but always heavy. The lyrics on the record come from human behaviour interests, especially its darker angles. Themes such as emptiness, hatred, and anxiety as well as religion and how it affects individuals.

According to Brutta, they believe fans will dig the sound, as it’s very original and consistent, but in a catchy and tuneful way. The dark atmospheres will drive the minds of listeners to obscure places. They are recommended listening for fans of Mayhem, Bloodbath, and Dark Funeral.

About:
After working for Athemon (Adriano Ribeiro (guitars, vocals) and Tom MacLean (ex-Haken) (bass)) as their session drummer, Gledson Gonçalves had the idea of creating another project with more extreme music. Recruiting Ribeiro (guitars, vocals) and MacLean (bass), both were very eager to dive headfirst into the aggressive sound Gonçalves had in mind. A few jams later and Brutta was officially formed as a studio project over two contents. Gonçalves and Ribeiro in Brazil and MacLean in the UK.

Brutta works collaboratively through every part of the process, first Ribeiro develops and assembles the riffs, to which Gonçalves adds drum parts. The final musical touches come in as MacLean weaves the bass riffs and then vocals are layered on top with lyrical themes coming from human behaviour, especially its darker angles.

As they plan to hit the stage in the near future, fans will be met with loads of energy and power during the set as Brutta releases their demons through strong performances, so the audience can do the same.

A modern and in-your-face version of obscure and wicked music, Brutta rises like brutal “Heavy Post Metal” their debut, self-titled album will be released on June 17, 2022.

Out Now! Swedish goth rock/metal band Outshine unleash their fifth full-length “The Awakening” available as of May 13th via Rockshots Records. With a vision of darkness and melancholy in a visual landscape, their new album is all about what has happened in the world during pandemic times.

“This Covid-19 era has taken a toll on the music world and showed that in troubling times the ones in power, the elites, don´t care about the common person. The lies, corruption, hidden agendas, and the rise of fascist behaviour from both unknown and known “leaders” that expands anything we´ve seen in decades are influencing and misleading people around the world making them turn on each other. Montreal’s Dead Velvet has a second single coming out, following on the heels of their well-received debut single “The Dogs”. This new single “Lonely Wreck” and its music video will be premiered on The Circle Pit (link below).

According to the band, “Lonely Wreck” is more or less a song about being the last man standing at a party, and also the impact that the abuse of drugs and alcohol can have on an individual. Although the words may seem to glorify this lifestyle, they were more intended to shine a light on the contrast between the highest highs and lowest lows, because they tend to go hand in hand. It’s a kind of dirty homage to mental health. The band continues to explain the musical aspects behind the track:

“We want to write music that gets people’s blood pumping and we think we accomplished that with “Lonely Wreck”. The eerie sound hovering over the instruments throughout most of the track sets the mood right from the get-go. There’s a lot of motion and dynamic throughout the song, whether it’s from the creepy whispering and funky bass throughout the verses, the upbeat energy of the choruses, or the haunting sounds during the intro and outro. The song is definitely a trip.”

Dead Velvet has recurring themes throughout their songs, kind of like a set of ingredients that they use to cook their tracks with. As for the music video, death is once again a big part of the imagery, but instead of them being murdered, this time they focused on an individual struggling with addiction and the depression that comes with it who, eventually, loses control of his life and contemplates suicide.

Since the release of their debut, Dead Velvet has been getting a lot more hype than they anticipated. They have played a couple of shows, to wild crowds giving them solid encouragement to keep going strong. Listeners have grown fond of them, and the band can’t wait to release this new song to give them another taste.

They are recommended for fans of Deftones, Stray From The Path, and Korn.

To celebrate its release day, and let everyone know that she’s not just a “No Name”, but a name to remember, Anniken shares her new music video for the last song she wrote for the record.

“The entire song is based on the title No Name. We wrote No Name as a placeholder in the studio plans since I hadn’t written the song yet. And then I just decided that it would, in fact, make a good title. So, I wrote the lyrics for it and took it to the studio where the song was born. I guess it can be described as Fame meets Supernatural.”

Anniken has been a part of the Norwegian heavy metal scene for years with her band Darkest Sins, the studio project Ana – Metal for Charity, as well as being a part of her husband Marius Danielsen’s trilogy Legend of Valley Doom, both in the studio and with the live band. While in Darkest Sins she opened for bands such as Anthrax, Jorn, TNT, and UDO along with Legend of Valley Doom she has worked with legendary musicians such as Ralf Scheepers, Amanda Somerville, Roland Grapow, Matt Barlow, Doogie White, Jennifer Batten, and also actor John Rhys-Davies from the Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones movies.

Writing her own songs and having a profound love of lyrics, Anniken is now progressing into her solo endeavours. Anniken‘s debut album “Climb Out of Hell” features nine tracks, a few of them co-written with her husband Marius Danielsen.

It is a varied metal album that is melodic, raw, and catchy with different types of songs for every kind of metal fan. Some slow, some fast, most of them heavy. Some of the songs have a deeper meaning to them, while others are just exactly what you think they are.

Anniken adds:

“Firstly, I want people to enjoy the music. Secondly, I want them to notice the lyrics. I love listening to music while reading them and trying to understand the stories that are being told. I hope that the listeners feel the same way. I like to also add, that some of the songs were written a while back. I had others that didn’t make the cut. Overall, it is fun to write with other artists and see how the songs turned out both in the studio and live. But writing with others also means compromising. And that is one of the main reasons behind starting my solo project. I wanted to show what I could do, without the guys (yes, the bands I’ve played with always consisted of all guys and me). It is, unfortunately, easy to underestimate female artists in metal. At least, that is my experience. There aren’t as many women within the genre as there are men. Very often I experienced that people just assumed everything was written by the men in the group. I don’t mind being “just the singer”, but I would love to show the world that I am, in fact, more.”
