0 “Fire and fury with a really strong technical edge, Omniarch live and breathe their metal, choking all who share the same space…. Ursa Major is one hell of a closer. The drums and guitars taking the mood down to dark places, the vocals the sound of hellish noise in the shadows. Then out of the blue the band throw out an absolute beast of a guitar solo. It’s momentously heavy stuff.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“2019 Winners of En Route to Heavy Montreal”

“The dirty, fat Stoner Sludge Metal riff of “Snakecharmer” is one designed to be accompanied by a beer and the gut-wrenching roar of “blow your brains out, blow my brains out” that brings it to it to its unnatural conclusion will no doubt be chanted by audiences across all lands as the band hit the road.” – Metal Noise

“Montreal hardcore rock n rollers Junkowl have released their new single ‘Quarantine Us All’, a slick combination of stoner riffs, hardcore energy, and groove metal. It’s ferocious and relentless from the offset, even when it veers out of hardcore territory and into the sludgier moments. It even has some technical moments, although they certainly borrow heavily from their influences (namely Every Time I Die and Cancer Bats) it is a banger in it’s own right, and given some time to breathe and develop I think this band could bring something monumental to the table.” – Backseat Mafia

““Quarantine Us All” – Montreal’s southern rock infused metallers JUNKOWL drop new venomous track” – Idioteq

“the group combines very heavy stoner riffs with the energy of punk rock and hardcore. A group to discover absolutely.” – Mad Breizh

“stoner-like riffs, a bit of a hardcore sound overall.. cool edge to it too.” – Moshtpit Radio – WORT FM 89.9 (Madison, WI)

“Junkowl’s debut album Making Out With My Death is a powerful first offering from the independent hard rock band.  Its musical arrangements join influences from a variety of bands that make the songs in themselves and from one to the next, powerful just from this aspect.  The record’s lyrical themes are just as heavy as its musical content, as noted.  Its sequencing puts the finishing touch to its presentation.  Each noted item is important in its own way.  All things considered, they make the album a work that bodes well for Junkowl’s future.” – Phil’s Picks

“this Montreal band is a whole other thing. Junkowl deals in a slick combination of stoner riffs, hardcore energy, and groovy bass, which has been called ‘party animal blues’. Which makes their debut album “Making Out With My Death” coming June 5, such a curveball.” – Cashbox Canada

“Another one to look for is the crowd pleaser, “10,000 Vultures,” memorable for so many reasons including its earnest bleakness. Overall this album exceeds my expectations. I liked Junkowl the first time I heard them play, and I am bigger fan now. Recommended.” – Flying Fiddle Sticks

“they’ve made a name for themselves in the ol’ Heavy Metal City™ with their energetic performances. And you know they have what it takes, since they won this year’s En Route Vers Heavy and literally earned their spot to perform. So technically speaking, this is gonna be an award-winning performance!” – Forget The Box (Heavy Montreal 2019 preview)

“I had the pleasure of being a judge at En Route Vers Heavy and these guys were my number one choice. I am so happy they won and got to follow their dream. They fucking destroyed.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews

Quick Facts:
1. In 2019, Junkowl won ‘En Route Vers Heavy Montreal’ a competition between nearly 200 bands. Junkowl won their first-round at Turbo Haus, and then again at the finals at L’astral landing them a spot at Heavy Montreal.

2. 10,000 Vultures was the first song Junkowl ever wrote and it was completed after their first jam together. Almost all the lyrics were freestyle during that jam.

L-R – Dominic Labrie – Drums, Jesse Frechette – Vocals, Marco Larosa – Guitar, Samuel Matte- Bass

Heavy, sexy, and southern. Those are the best words to describe Montreal’s Junkowl.

Formed in 2017, their unique blend of groove metal, stoner, and hardcore is matched with high energy ‘in your face’ performances. A year earlier Jesse Frechette (vocals) met Dom Labrie (drums) and after a few jams they picked up Marco Larosa (guitar) and Samuel Matte (bass) and the rest is history. The writing process is a collaborative one, with melodies and vocals usually forming on the spot.

Moving through the underground music scene, Junkowl quickly made a name for themselves when they won the 2019 ‘En Route Vers Heavy Montreal’; a competition between nearly 200 bands, landing them a spot at that year’s edition of renowned metal festival Heavy Montreal.

On June 5th, 2020, they  will release their debut album, “Making Out With My Death”, a 10 track record full of sultry and powerful songs about past regrets and self-destructive behaviour. It includes the band’s favourite “10,000 Vultures”, the first song Junkowl ever wrote, which was completed after the first jam together. Almost all the lyrics were freestyle during that jam.

With no sign of slowing down, Junkowl has more tunes in the works and pouring passion into their live performances and newly recorded tunes. Stay tuned for party animal blues; fat spliffs and heavy riffs.

2020 Armstrong MetalFest Officially Cancelled Due To Covid

Watch the official video recap of AMF 2019 here.
(video created by Mayne Brand Productions)

The 2020 edition of British Columbia’s Armstrong MetalFest has been officially cancelled due to the recommendation by the provincial government for social distancing during the Covid 19 pandemic. Falling under the category of an event hosting a public gathering larger than 50 people, the festival has taken the initiative to not present this year’s 2020 line up. The health and safety of attendees is the primary concern and event organizers know it is necessary to make this decision to help protect the public and follow the government guidelines in slowing down the spread of the virus. For more information from the BC Centre For Disease Control, please visit the following link here.

Armstrong MetalFest issued the following statement:

“We had to make a very difficult decision, but the health of all metalheads who were planning to attend is our #1 priority. The members of West Metal Entertainment Society hope everyone can stay safe during these troubling times. Armstrong Metalfest will return in 2021!”

Scheduled to be held on July 17th and 18th, the 2020 line up was to be the 12th year for British Columbia’s largest, loudest and premier event for extreme music in the Okanagan Valley. Tickets that were purchased for the 2020 event can be refunded or be kept for future use with the choice of attending one of the next three years of the festival.

To inquire about ticket refunds, please email info[@]armstrongmetalfest[.]ca.

About:
For 11 years running, West Metal Entertainment and Armstrong Metalfest has not only fostered the talent of hundreds of local bands but brought in well-known, international acts to the quiet, little Canadian town of Armstrong, British Columbia.

Each year up to 700 metalheads from Canada and USA descend into the picturesque Okanagan Valley and under the blistering sun they spend 3 days camping, taking in over 30 bands, participating in wrestling events, and scavenger hunts and catching up with their metal family.

The festival has seen such renowned headliners as Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, Archspire, and Beyond Creation as well as emerging artists from across North America. At the end of the revelry, the festival disappears without a trace, leaving the landscape as pristine as it has always been.

West Metal Entertainment is a non-profit society that not only puts on Armstrong Metal Festival every year in Armstrong, B.C., but gives bands opportunities to play different venues throughout the region including all-ages shows, to encourage musical passion in kids as well as adults.

DYATLOVE Launch Pre-Order For Debut Self-Titled EP Out May 29th

New Music Video ‘Fragile Fixation’

Vancouver’s Dyatlove have launched the pre-order for their self-titled debut EP due out May 29th. Along with the digital release of the EP, the band will be issuing a cassette version from Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’. Recorded at Rain City Recorders with Matt Roach over the course of a few days, Dyatlove‘s sound is eclectic and diverse, at times morose and at other, heavy sludge. An EP that requires attention to take in, each song takes the listener on a ride with complex lyrical content aiming to grab attention. Guitarist Rikki Jennings-Buford shares his thoughts on the EP:

“I think this EP will be appreciated by more than just fans of heavy music. As musicians, we write the music that we want to hear and we aren’t fans of just metal. There is something for everyone who digs guitar-based music on this EP. We hope these 4 songs give you a good representation of our inspirations and where we could go musically.”

In addition to the EP’s pre-order, the band has released their music video for the single ‘Fragile Fixation’.

The single is the result of Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) returning from a getaway with the idea for the song. It evolved into a track that is one of their more classically structured songs, but they felt it would be a song that most people would gravitate to right away.

Lyrically it is about the pull of depression and not knowing how to get out of it and how it can take over your entire frame of thinking. Understanding you are hurting people but not knowing how to get out of it.

Watch ‘Fragile Fixation’ HERE.

For fans of Spotlights, Hum, Thrice, and Explosions In The Sky, the EP’s pre-order is available at the following link HERE.

Track Listing:
1. Pass The Heavens (8:14)
2. Empty Lungs (6:53)
3. Fragile Fixation (4:51)
4. Old Haunts (8:11)
5. Die! Kill! Pig! (2:52)*

About:

Dyatlove is a passionate foray into the realm of morose singer-songwriter overtones set alongside heavy music. Longtime friends Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) and Rikki Jennings-Buford (guitar) bonded over bands such as Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, and Pinback.

This array of influences drives the diversity of Vancouver, Canada’s Dyatlove, who don’t feel the need to pigeon hole into a particular genre. From sad songs to crushing sludge metal to 2-minute hardcore songs, Dyatlove conveys emotion and brings the heavy with drop A tuning.

Starting individually, the band works on riffs and ideas, eventually bringing them together to be fleshed out further. As full believers of limitless creativity, they don’t tie themselves to classic song structures. The lyrics come from many places, some are stories, some are personal experiences. There are songs about love of family, songs about loss, songs about anger and songs about struggles and addictions. Although varied in the subject matter they all have one thing in common, feeling.

Performing with the same intense passion and emotion that they bring to the jam space, Dyatlove intends to really connect to their fans, and show what their songs mean to them. With Rob Sheldrick (drums) and Justin Lacey (bass), the quartet delivers with an infectious openness and energy. Their self-titled, debut EP is being released on May 29, 2020 with the cassette version being released by Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

– 30 –

“they’ve got one behemoth set of four savage cuts on this record that warrant a major repeating, and a lineup of tunes that command & demand your full attention.  This whole experience met every hope & expectation I could have had, then smashed & surpassed them all – Dyatlove’s EP didn’t let me down for a solitary second – you need this record on your playlists this year.” – Sleeping Bag Studios

Calgary, Canada’s most versatile metal band Black Pestilence is now streaming their new album “Hail the Flesh” via Metal Injection. Listen HERE.

The trio is stoked to release their sixth studio album, their most refined and mature record to date. Working hard over the last year and a half, the band has been pounding out their signature blend of black metal, punk, and noise. The result is 9 blistering tracks with fast drums, angry vocals, and an array of synthesized melodies.

Raising hell since 2008, Black Pestilence has reached an apex of refined satanic torment. Band founder, bassist and vocalist Valax adds:

“‘Hail The Flesh’ will be fast, and chaotic. Lyrically, for it, I talk about glorifying the carnal lifestyle and celebrating Earthly pleasures and indulgences. I am inspired by so many different avenues for lyrics. Without sounding too cliche, most of the lyrics are about Satanism, but not on a theistic level, just true, carnal, humanistic Satanism. Many other songs are also about social issues.”

Black Pestilence is for fans interested in Impaled Nazarene, Municipal Waste, and Midnight.

Over the course of twelve years, Black Pestilence has released five full-length albums, filmed four music videos, and performed all over Canada and Europe. They have also shared the stage with a number of notable bands including The Black Dahlia Murder, Toxic Holocaust, Absu, Skeletonwitch, and Wednesday 13.

“Hail the Flesh” will be available on May 1st and is available for pre-order on Bandcamp along with their previous releases.

“A recent discovery that has tickled the excitement nerves in my jaded and encrusted ear drums is Calgary’s Black Pestilence. Their take on black metal incorporates old-school thrash and punk and if you listen closely you can hear the smatterings of plain ol’ rock ‘n’ roll and swaths of noise and is a sound that has been explored and nurtured since the band formed as a one-man project in 2008. The band’s handlers claim those fans of Toxic Holocaust, Impaled Nazarene, Municipal Waste, Midnight and Cradle of Filth unconcerned with genre boundaries will enjoy Black Pestilence and we have to say the nail has certainly been hit on the head in that regard. Additionally, fans of image and theatrics will find value in the band’s aesthetic which owes to a collision of black metal, goth rock and Judas Priest’s wardrobe and fashion sense. ” – Decibel Magazine

“an album that really has a surprisingly wide range within the black/thrash/punk style so if you love that sort of black and roll aggressive metal, then “Hail The Flesh” will be an album for you.” – The Rockpit

“They really don’t have another gear beyond ‘top’ which makes for a splitting headache of heavy but one that satisfies. After all there are only 9 tracks and as Godless spits and snarls, Frauds to the Throne exudes filthy groove, My Will to Power rages hard and Ephemeral drags the suffering out, the over-riding thought is Black Pestilence have impressed.” 8/10 – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“First things first, it’s not every day you hear black metal as fun as this! That is partly because of the exciting thrash and not-so-serious punk influences, but also because the songwriting is very strong. ” 4/ 5 – The Independent Voice

“dirty, punky Black/Thrash that occasionally makes feedback noises and consistently slaughters everything in its path.” 4/5 – The Metal Crypt

“They can smash extremely well, and their blend of black metal aesthetic with punk attitude is a perfect fit ” – 4/5 – Deaf Sparrow

“a musical union of black / thrash & punk that just rock ROCK! I give 9 out of 10 Hellfire points” – Hellfire Magazin

“Bringing a sonic assault to listeners…..” – Permafrost Today

0 Metal Talk – Black Pestilence – Hail The Flesh “Honestly, anyone with the remotest interest in Black ‘n’ Thrash, Black ’n’ Roll or even just plain old Thrash is going to love this album. It is a blisteringly addictive listen. The skilfully fluid ways that all these genres are melded is both brilliant and compelling as well as being lyrically inspiring.”

Edmonton death metal duo Tales of The Tomb are sharing with fans their latest guitar playthrough for ‘Sinful Messiah’. The track comes off of the band’s EP “Volume Two: Mendicium” unleashed this past September. The EP itself is a collection of narratives surrounding government cover-ups, national lies and the heinous crimes committed amongst the shadows. It’s also a vicious bite of grinding blast beats, technical shredding accompanied by venomous guttural lows.

‘Sinful Messiah’, the third track of six on the EP, is a dark tale of the infamous cult leader David Koresh and the Branch Davidians (if you follow Netflix, watch WACO).

Today, guitarists Trez Thomas and Corey Skerlak have put together a new playthrough for the song, which is one of many more videos being released by the band in the coming weeks.

Behold the shredding duo via the video’s premiere on Ghost Cult Magazine HERE.

The band explains the story behind the song:

“Our song ‘Sinful Messiah’ focuses on the cult leader from the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas — David Koresh. The Branch attracted the attention of the ATF when the US postal service flagged a suspicious parcel containing live hand grenades being shipped to their compound. The name ‘Sinful Messiah’ is ripped from the headline of a newspaper article giving him the title; because David believed he was the second coming of Christ. This song was written to sonically recreate the events that took place portraying the level of chaos and confusion created by raids and the siege on the compound. This event has been regarded by some as a publicity stunt in the wake of cult hysteria to paint the ATF in a positive light — leading to a “who shot first?” conspiracy.”

Behold the shredding duo in the following video via Ghost Cult Magazine HERE.

“Volume Two: Mendicium” was mixed and mastered by Cryptopsy guitarist and head engineer/owner at The Grid Studios Christian Donaldson along with featuring artwork by Tony Midi of Tonymidi Artworks. The EP is available on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music.

Track Listing:
1. The Nightmare Hall (4:05)
2. Faul (3:02)
3. The Sinful Messiah (4:14)
4. Dyatlov Pass Incident (3:52)
5. Nine Eleven (4:46)
6. Mermaid In A Manhole (3:33)

About:

Unified by the desire to have the grotesque power of 90’s era death and murder metal, Tales of The Tomb started as a thought that grew into an insatiable need to make extreme music.  Tales Of The Tomb was created in October 2013 from founder Corey Skerlak (guitar, vocals) out of inspiration from the original murder metal band Macabre.

Much of their inspiration is drawn from the hideous crimes and conspiracies of the world. Retelling stories of the dark hidden secrets and victims from such crimes. This was the inspiration for the name Tales of The Tomb.

– 30 –

“Overall, I recommend this album to death metal fans of all varieties. It is a fun album with a lot of great riffs. Also, I highly recommend reading the lyrics and learning about the conspiracy theories behind the songs.” – Metal Temple

“Volume Two: Mendacium is six songs of punishing metal fit for listeners with the heaviest of taste. Whether you’re spending time carving pumpkins or watching slasher movies this Halloween season, be sure to make room on your playlist for Tales of the Tomb.” – Surviving The Golden Age

” Their new, independently released EP is heavy as ice and laced up with razor-sharp production. Volume Two: Mendacium is a non-stop frosty riff fest, delivered on a moose-poutine platter of awesome production thanks to the Canucks over at The Grid. Slapshot your wallets & pick up this death metal gem.” – TrveNorth Reviews

“The need to head bang is strong with this one, and it made for an excellent addition to my Death Metal library.” – New-Transcendence

“All in all, Tales of the Tomb’s latest installment is a rather subtle tale that is more akin to a destructive musical journey through morbid lyrical themes and passages.” – Metal Trenches

Rockshots Records: EXTREMA Release Cover Video of Judas Priest’s “The Ripper” via MetalInsider

Donating Proceeds To Italian Covid-19 Relief

Album “Headbanging Forever” Out Now! via Rockshots Records

During their studio sessions for their latest album “Headbanging Forever”, Italian groove thrash metallers EXTREMA recorded a cover version of Judas Priest’s “The Ripper”.

Today, the band is sharing its video for that cover with its premiere via MetalInsider.net HERE.

Adding to the cover track’s release, with their home country of Italy hit hard by the Covid 19 pandemic, EXTREMA will be donating all profits from downloads and streams to the Italian Civil Protection, who are the frontlines in the battle against this virus, coordinating the nation’s pandemic response with Italy’s Ministry of Health.

Digital download available on Apple Music.

Mastermind and guitar player Tommy Massara comments:

“Our cover of ‘The Ripper’ was originally conceived as a bonus track of ‘Headbanging Forever’ for the Japanese market. As we did not find the sought license in Japan, the song was closed in a drawer. To me, Coronavirus is like Jack the Knife hitting you from behind, so I felt the need to release the song as a digital single. All the royalty’s proceeds will be donated to the Italian Civil Protection. I discussed it with Gabri, Frullo, and Tiziano, and they accepted enthusiastically. I hope you enjoy our version of this timeless Judas Priest’s classic hit”.

EXTREMA’s singer Tiziano “Titian” Spigno adds:

“This emergency, which arrived in the midst of our Italian tour, caught everyone unprepared. During these times music, books, movies, and art in general, although so badly affected, in many cases are a refuge for those people isolated at home, managing to get a few moments of serenity. Extrema want to contribute with this cover, recorded during the recording session of ‘Headbanging Forever’”.

EXTREMA tour dates have been rescheduled as follows:

September 2020
12 Bolzano  IT – Pippostage
26 Roma IT – Defrag
27 Milano IT – Milano Headbanging Fest @ Magazzini Generali

November 2020

Bio:

EXTREMA’s original line-up was established between 1985 and 1986 in Milan, Italy. In a very short time, the band led by guitars player Tommy Massara achieved a huge success. Tommy is the only remaining member of the original line-up, and over the years he also played the role of artistic and executive producer.

Hundreds of concerts made the band more and more close-knit and open towards a constant growth path, capable from the beginning of welcoming influences external to heavy metal, a consistent choice within an evolutionary framework which saw EXTREMA start from the rebellious attitude of MOTÖRHEAD to later incorporate the style of Californian thrash metal, a scene with which the band shared the utmost care for the technical side of music and a devastating presence on stage.

The band’s reputation as musicians and performers kept growing in a perpetual live context, with extensive tours and the participation to prestigious festivals with the likes of METALLICA, SLAYER, MOTÖRHEAD, and KORN, a.o.

Extraneous from the beginning to political and ideological implications of any kind, EXTREMA’s lyrics have always strived to alternate challenging and contemporary themes with lighter subjects, true to rock’n’roll form.

In May 2017 the band welcomed the new frontman Tiziano Spigno. Thanks to his entry, EXTREMA can finally release all the creativity repressed in recent years: a violent, direct and engaging approach which is – at the same time – also varied, courageous and experimental, resulting in the new album “Headbanging Forever”.

EXTREMA is:
Tiziano “Titian” Spigno – Vocals
Tommy Massara – Guitars
Gabri Giovanna – Bass
Francesco “Frullo” Larosa – Drums

Norwegian Death Metal Féleth Premiere ‘Swan Song’ via Metal-Rules

Debut Album “Depravity” Due Out May 22nd via DeadPop Records

Nestled in the small northern Norwegian town of Alta, far above the Arctic circle, there’s a rumbling of brutality shaking the earth from a young, dynamic metal quintet known as Féleth. Creating heavy, melodic assaults, that transcends the traditional limits of the genre, these great northern Norwegians, are taking their influences of death metal, thrash, deathcore, rock and even elements of Jazz to unleash to the world their debut album “Depravity” due out via DeadPop Records on May 22, 2020.

Today, the band’s third single ‘Swan Song’ is ready to be revealed via its premiere on Metal Rules.com HERE.

The track shows off more of their deathcore influences compared to other songs on the album such as the epic ‘Dissolution’ that jumps from death metal to jazz to black metal seamlessly, and ‘Pale Tongue’, transforming from in your face death metal to a beautiful ambient soundscape.

The album was mixed and mastered by death metal legend, Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy, Shadow of Intent, The Agonist, Beyond Creation) at The Grid Productions. The album also features guest vocals from hometown hero, singer/songwriter Petter Carlsen.

Lyrically the album pulls away from traditional death metal tropes, to also criticize capitalism, pollution, fake news, and the depravity of humanity at large. Musically, the full length features beautiful melodic leads, heavy chugging guitars, bass solo’s, fast intricate drum work, and the huge vocal range from the lead vocalist, Espen Dagenborg.
