Calgary’s YYC Music Awards Announce 2018 Nominees

Honouring members of the Calgary music community in 20 categories this year (listed below), the YYC MUSIC AWARDS is proud to announce the 2018 nominees from one of Canada’s most vibrant and eclectic scenes. The 3rd annual YYCMA gala will be hosted on September 23rd at The Palace Theatre (219 8 Ave SW) and will celebrate artists from Calgary along with its surrounding cities of Airdrie, Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Strathmore plus other areas that are up to a maximum of 125 km radius from the City of Calgary. Artists participating in this year’s awards were nominated for their commercially released material between March 1st, 2017 and February 28th, 2018. “Downfall” features six energetic, unorthodox, progressive, spirited and memorable tracks plus guest vocals and keyboard from Cradle of Filth‘s Lindsay Schoolcraft on “New Skin”. The EP follows FALLEN LEGION‘s two well-received demo EPs “Screams From The Dungeon” (2012) and “Infinite Archive” (2015). Following the release of their 2017 EP “Ritualis Aeterna”, Canadian horror inspired symphonic power metallers MALACODA will be releasing a new full length album entitled “Restless Dreams” via ROCKSHOTS RECORDS on October 19th in North America and October 26th in Europe. The album delivers a full musical experience inspired by the horror video game “Silent Hill 2”. MALACODA first introduced their fans to the “Silent Hill 2” storyline with the track “I Got A Letter“, which was featured on the band’s sophomore release “Ritualis Aeterna”.

Inspired by the horror video game “Silent Hill 2”, “Restless Dreams” is a musical journey through dark tormented themes of doubt, loss, guilt and terror. The plot of the album follows a broken man’s journey through the ghost town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his dead wife asking him to meet her there. MALACODA brings a fresh interpretation of these themes and artfully bring to life the oppressive, claustrophobic aura of the fog consumed town with deviously clever song-writing and mind-catching lyrics. “Restless Dreams” is a musical release unlike any other. Taking their name from a demon from Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’, Malacoda’s dark gothic vision is indeed divine but no laughing matter.

As band leader Lucas, who studied Literature and Religion at University explains: ‘Malacoda was the name of a very minor character in the book, a fallen angel who flies around with a small army of demons torturing helpless souls in Hell. From a literary perspective, I found it interesting that he wasn’t merely an evil creature being tortured for his sins, but was given free reign to do what he pleases and takes it upon himself to torture other wicked souls in the spiritual prison that is Dante’s Inferno. I wanted a powerful name that fit not only the sound of the band but also the lyrical themes I touch upon. I wanted something dark, but not something that would be blatantly devilish sounding. The name translates roughly in Italian to ‘Cruel Tail’ and most people don’t see it and think “this band is named after a demon” and see it as something more romantic sounding.’

Like the ‘Inferno’ that inspired their name they forge metal without limits in sonic shapes endless and horrifying in equal measure. Malacoda’s music vision shares much in common with Dante’s, they are unafraid to gaze into the abyss, unafraid to be inspired by the myriad of human horrors within and without. They are not blind to the worlds within them waiting to be born.

Full of dark atmosphere, originality and innovation, this is gothic power metal for the 21st century, intelligence and intensity to rival that of their infernal inspirations!

But because these geniuses of blending comedy, metal, heavy rock and the occasional spoof cover have been super busy releasing viral videos and touring the world.

“DO” may have passed fans by real quickly as the band just recently surprised the globe by releasing it during their live webcast on Twitch on July 24th. The band was originally going to reveal just album details but decided what’s better than sharing the whole darn thing with them.

Western Canada’s decibel breaking heavy metal festival LOUD AS HELL has put together a digital sampler available for FREE download from some of this year’s performing bands.

This year’s 2018 edition of LOUD AS HELL features over 40 bands from across Western Canada and beyond that includes headliners New Jersey’s deathcore titans FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY, Vancouver tech death giants ARCHSPIRE, Regina’s progressive melo-death masters INTO ETERNITY plus many more that will rage across the Dinosaur Downs Stampede Grounds in Drumheller, AB from August 3rd to 5th.

About:

West of Hell is a heavy metal band that was formed in 2002 in West Auckland, New Zealand by Ivan Vrdoljak and Andrew Hulme. Sean Parkinson (ex-Sinate) and Jordan Kemp joined shortly there after. As an instrumental band West of Hell was quickly outgrowing New Zealand, all they needed was a frontman.

In 2009 the four members uprooted their lives and moved to the other side of the world to Vancouver, Canada. The band played a series of shows as a four-piece instrumental drawing critical acclaim and attracting the attention of the local metal community. The exposure led them to Zimmers Hole frontman Chris “The Heathen” Valagao. They hired producer and Juno Award winning engineer Rob Shallcross (Strapping Young Lad, GWAR, Zimmers Hole, Gene Hoglan, Fear Factory) with whom Valagao had worked with on previous projects. In late 2010 they began work on Spiral Empire at The Factory Studios in Vancouver. Spiral Empire was released in 2012 on Reversed Records, followed by a tour in New Zealand and extensive touring in Canada. Ivan Vrdoljak was forced to return to New Zealand in 2010 shortly after recording. Many guitar players tried to fill Vrdoljak’s shoes until Kris Shultz joined the band in late 2014.

Chris Valagao being a cinematographer and SPFX artist produced and directed the bands first two videos for “Faceless the Droids” and “Water of Sorcery” .

In 2015 West Of Hell’s entered the studio to track a new album which was recorded at Armoury Studios in Vancouver B.C. (INXS, KISS, YES, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Stone Sour, Strapping Young Lad) with Ash Pearson on drums (Revocation, Three inches Of Blood) and Infinity Studios in Victoria B.C. Produced again by Rob (Chicken) Shallcross and Mastered by Greg Reely (Fear Factory, Strapping Young Lad, Paradise Lost, Devil Driver, Darkest Hour, Bleeding Through, Overkill and Three inches Of Blood). The new album is definitely an evolution of the form. The debut release was a very power/classic metal offering, while the new album, set for a 2018 release, seamlessly incorporates elements of thrash, death, tech and classic metal. Valagao has produced and directed three more videos for the bands upcoming new release.
