New Album “Conspiracy Theorist” Out Now!

Unleashing their debut beast “Conspiracy Theorist” in 2019 with much praise from metal media and even a nomination for metal album of the year from the GAMIQ’s (Gala alternatif de la musique indépendante du Québec), Northern Quebec death/thrash trio BACKSTABBER bring their track ‘My Disclosure’ to life in a new music video.

The video tells the story of the kidnapping of a young girl who is turned into a guinea pig by Aliens or Deep State (you’ll have to watch the video to find out). The track digs into the feelings of gaining back consciousness, the depression, and dizziness one can feel when realizing they can’t even trust their own memory. Then they recollect the events piece by piece to only realize that the knowledge of the truth may not be the best outcome.

The band adds:

“When we wrote the lyrics for this song we knew from the start that there was a good story plot and material to make a good video clip, so we kept the storyline in mind as we created the track. The plot twist is kept vague throughout the song so that we had room for the video production as we focussed a lot on the main character, which is the kidnapped girl, we wanted to dig into her emotions as she experienced horrific events. The filming part was quite a challenge as we had to shoot in many different locations ranging sometimes a hundred kilometres apart. ‘My Disclosure’ takes a specific approach to the disclosure movement as it focuses more on the victims of third kind encounters than the disclosure itself. It’s an in-depth view of the hell these people go through as they try to figure what happened to them. It’s also a reminder that knowledge can be a burden to bear and that some things are meant to be kept hidden.”

BACKSTABBER‘s debut album “Conspiracy Theorist” is a fierce 10 track full-length that encompasses themes about scandals, critiques of mainstream media and conspiracies such as hollow Earth. Remaining old school, there are no clean vocals or breakdowns here, just a solid and mature death/thrash metal album, with good flow and clear thought in the tracks and compositions.

Lutharö hails from Hamilton, Canada and this group of motivated musicians is bringing a fresh take on heavy metal to listeners around the world.

Toronto’s BLACK ABSINTHE announce they will be hitting the road in April and May for show dates in Oshawa, Toronto, London, and Ottawa (dates listed below). The mini Ontario tour is in support of their latest single / music video ‘Witness’ that the trio released in follow up to their 2016 breakout album “Early Signs of Denial” that was produced by Dave Baksh (Sum 41, Black Cat Attack). The album garnered praise from respectable outlets such as Bravewords “The record has emphasis of crushing modern tone, polished instrumental sections, soaring vocals and a blending of contemporary and classic metal.” and Blabbermouth “BLACK ABSINTHE does quite a bit within each of their songs, wrangling together bits of metal theories from yesteryear and today. BLACK ABSINTHE‘s new single “Witness” was recorded in the backwoods of Lac-des-Loups, QC at Wolf Lake Studios with producer Alexander Galley (Loviatar, Dissentient, Martyrs). Representing a new generation of heavy music producers, Galley’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and openness confirmed he would bring a cutting edge sensibility to the band’s recording of the track. A forward-thinking producer with an ear to the ground of the emerging sounds of heavy music, his direction for guitar and bass tone for the song was a vision all his own. Reminiscent of the classic metal philosophy and in an intense ten-hour blitz, BLACK ABSINTHE went into the studio knowing they wanted to record the song in its entirety and bask in the completed performance. Equipped with an Ayotte house-kit in the studio, Austin Henderson laid down drum tracks to set the foundation of the track for the session. Following, bassist Kyle Scarlett and guitarist Jack Cerre both tuned up and recorded with their stage Fenders. Housing exceptional gear, BLACK ABSINTHE utilized the studio’s Kemper Profiler and boutique bass gear (Darkglass Electronics).

“All in all the experience was exhilarating, especially under pressure, our preparation paid off because the recording captures a true performance and urgency.”

The video for the single “Witness” was shot at Toronto heavy metal venue Coalition T.O just months before its unfortunate closure. The venue itself holds a very dear spot in the metal hearts of the band as they lived and performed just steps away from it for the last four years, meeting local and touring bands along with rocking out their own relentless run of shows.

Trusting Katherine Kwan, “The Wild” (2017) director to encapsulate the energy felt in the band’s live performances. The video begins with a glimpse into what a night at their local and beloved punk/metal Kensington Market venue was like. From the bright pit footage to the intoxicating strobe saturated drum breakdown – the single is represented in the best and most chaotic way possible.

“The insanity of the front row has been the proving grounds of Black Absinthe’s sound, and the foreground to this video.” The band adds. “Live shows took the placeholder for releasing music over the past three years, and the energy in this video is how you will always find us live. Alberta’s Decimate MetalFest Announces Venue Change to Millet, AB – June 12-14

First Round of Bands For 2020 Line-Up Revealed; More To Be Announced

Decimate MetalFest announces it will be moving its venue for its 2020 edition on June 12-14 to Millet, AB at the Millet Agriplex (5400 45th Avenue) with camping available at the Millet Lions Memorial Campground. Millet, AB is 60kms south of Edmonton and 250kms north of Calgary. For its first two years, DMF was held in Calgary. This year’s festival will also be an all-ages event.

This year’s DMF roster promises an array of 35+ performing acts from many metal sub-genres along with burlesque, comedy, and more from across Canada.

Thy Despair‘s new album “The Song of Desolation” follows the band’s 2018 debut EP “Free One”. Some of the album’s lyrics are influenced by the war in eastern Ukraine. “It is a great tragedy for the nation and the main idea of these songs is that you should always fight back and keep freedom in your heart and mind. Lyrics of other songs are inspired by local legends or life experience.” says band founder Nephilim.

The album as a whole features 10 tracks each with its own tale to tell and a statement that unites all of them together.

Thy Despair band was founded by guitarist Nephilim in 2006 in Kiev, Ukraine. Initially, the band was called Thoughts of the Desperate and revealed the essence of despair in its lyrics. The first songs were written in the style of gothic doom metal under the influence of such bands as Sins of thy Beloved, Betray My Secrets, Tristania, Draconian, Estatic Fear. Later, the music became faster, instrumental parts became more complicated and exceeded the scope of gothic doom, but, nevertheless, the aesthetic melody and gloomy atmosphere remain the hallmark of the band until now. Along with the change in style, it was decided to change the name of the band to Thy Despair.

Since 2008, the band has been active live all across Ukraine, not only in Kiev clubs, but in Chernihiv, Chernivtsi, Kremenchug, Kharkov.

In 2011, Thy Despair went on a 3-year hiatus and returned in 2014 with new material and fresh lineup and material. In addition to the founder Nephilim, this line-up included Frozt on drums and Nick on keyboard who played in the previous Thy Despair line-up. New vocalist Tatyana Mikhailova (Malinconia) joined the line up along with Ep (Mental Torment, I Miss My Death) became the bass player. In such a composition, the band actively performed in clubs and open-air events. In 2015, Thy Despair experienced new problems with the line-up, after releasing the Ukrainian-language single “Vilny” (2015). The band took a pause for 2 years.

In 2017, Thy Despair was resurrected in a completely new lineup: Elin – vocal, Nephilim – guitar / growl, Strike (Crisis, Black Cat, Lord of Dust) – guitar, Navka (Dolonі, Censor, No Brakes) – keyboards, Anton (Censor, Black Cat) – bass, Alex (Two Streets) – drums. Everyone contributed something new, and the music of the band started to sound in a new key.

On May 16th, 2018 Thy Despair released their EP album called “The Free One” which included 3 tracks: “The Free One”, “Sabbath”, and “War”. The lyrics were strongly influenced by the war in Ukraine. Man’s aspiration for freedom and his scramble with insidious creatures willing to enslave his body, mind, and soul was the main idea the band developed in its lyrics.

The band decided to release the EP album in two variants: in Ukrainian and in English languages. This decision was made in order to get across to the English speaking audience the idea of liberating struggle and aspiration for freedom of nation in general and personality in particular. A limited number of CDs with Ukrainian language version were also released.

During 2018-2019, Thy Despair performed locally in Kieve along with performance on Ukrainian open-air festivals Black Sea Metal Fest and Rock Bulava.

In May of 2019, the band has released a tribute to Game of Thrones main theme on Youtube. This release included a video of the most epic moments of the series with Thy Despair’s unique authorial vision of how original music should sound like. The song also has authored lyrics inspired by Game of Thrones series.

Now in 2020, Thy Despair will unleash their first full length “The Song of Isolation” via Italy based label Rockshots Records on May 8th.

Die Another Day is one of Calgary, Canada’s freshest bands. Conceived in the spring of 2019 with a variety of inﬂuences, the quartet expands into multiple genres, getting fans excited to embrace different styles of music. Releasing their introductory singles ‘Broken Youth’ during August of 2019 followed by ‘Life To The Max‘ this past February, the band is now ready to unleash the title track off their forthcoming debut EP “Wild Fire” due out April 10, 2020.

Bassist Tyler Johansen further explains the EP:

“We wanted to share with the world our more aggressive hard-hitting side of our music. This is an EP that means the world to us as it touches on so many personal notes as well as being our first full outing as a band so we really wanted to come out swinging with this one. It’s exciting to bring more than a single out to share with everyone; we cannot wait to show you all what months of practicing, writing, and recording is going to look and sound like.”

Lyrically, the release is based around emotions that they’ve felt in past experiences of their lives. Some of these songs cover subjects/ moments of band member’s lives that are very personal to them. Some are more based around observations of the state of things around the world. Not necessarily exact ways of how things are, but observations from their point of view.

Johansen adds:

“We really wanted something that will resonate with people or make them think when they’re listening to the lyrics.”

Live, Die Another Day brings a high energy stage show that’s guaranteed to get people off their feet and moving along to the music. From making the crowd become a part of the songs they perform, to diving right in and making themselves a part of the action that’s taking place within the audience, the band isn’t afraid of giving every ounce energy to have a good time with every person in the room.

Canadian metal powerhouse IMONOLITH has revealed the fourth single, ‘Becoming The Enemy’ featuring a guest appearance by well-known Swedish vocalist Johannes Eckerström, from their upcoming debut, “State of Being” due out March 27th.

A lyric video for ‘Becoming The Enemy’ is available today via Consequence of Sound HERE.

“’Becoming the Enemy’ is a song about becoming your own worst enemy,” says drummer Ryan ‘RVP’ Van Poederooyen. “All of us have done it at some point in our lives. The point of the song lyrically is to learn from your mistakes instead of repeating them over and over.”

The lyric video for ‘Becoming The Enemy’ features a character called “The Sickness” who reprises his role from the ‘Instinct’ video, released in January.

“We continue the theme we started in ‘Instinct,’” RVP explains. “The theme of our album ‘State of Being’ is about how people deal with various states of being throughout their lives. We thought having ‘The Sickness’ appear in a couple of videos would help tie everything together and tell a visual story to go along with the album as a whole.”

The forthcoming full-length “State of Being” features 10 hook-laden, riff-heavy tracks including ‘Hollow’ the debut single that made big waves for IMONOLITH straight out of the gate, racking up 216K Spotify streams in 2019. Having spent much of 2019 writing, arranging, recording and fine-tuning “State of Being”, the band worked incredibly hard to achieve their goal – to make an engaging heavy metal album. Toronto’s ITUS unleashes their next single ‘The Chaplain’ off their debut recording “Primordial” due out March 13th. The EP is the first of two that will culminate into a full-length album.

‘Chaplain’ can be heard via its premiere on CVLTNation HERE.

The band adds:

“‘The Chaplain’ is definitely a weird one. We didn’t really know what to do for the final song on the EP so we decided to go up north to Brandon’s cottage, jam for the weekend and see what we came up with. The entire rhythm section of the song was hashed out with a click track. We built up the whole song around one riff, adding many more layers and effects. We really wanted to close the album with a hard-hitting, droning doom song. The lyrics are directly inspired by stories from Warhammer 40k, a popular fantasy war game. It follows the tale of a space-marine soldier, who finds a portal in space which completely corrupts him, and he emerges from that portal as a plague on humanity.

The EP’s songs focus around aggressive, dark and primal concepts and embrace the death metal roots of the duo. They explain their goals for the release’s reception:

“We think that this EP will manage to ensnare those who are into heavier music, as well as attract other listeners who may not be so into death metal and related genres. The clean vocals and bright lead guitars really lighten up the darker, heavier passages of the songs. Reinier’s aggressive, chortling screams and yelling portrays an unhinged, brooding darkness, sure to keep listeners on the edge of their seats.”

Fans of Electric Wizard, Sleep and Left Behind are sure to enjoy the doomy and stoner rock rumbles of ITUS and their debut “Primordial”.

About:

Early in 2019, ITUS was formed by Brandon Lucking (guitars) and Reinier Vandenbosch (vocals), who at the time, were in another band with a different style but looking to try something new. The result was these Ontario boys blending doom and stoner rock with crushing heavy metal passages, in a psychedelic atmosphere of horror influenced sounds.

The writing process is fairly simple for ITUS, Lucking writes the melodies as they come to him, and Vandenbosch writes the vocals and lyrics. The foundation of the lyrics always starts from personal experience, traumas, and how events in life unfold which are further imbued with influence from science fiction and horror fiction, mythology, dark philosophy, and political angst.

The soundscape of horrors that ITUS paints is enthralling already as a two-piece online project, and there are plans on the horizon to build it into a full-on touring 3 piece band delivering an energetic and abrasive live experience with a heavy, brooding ambiance.

Seeking revenge, our hero battles his nemesis in a brutal no holds barred sword fight, while his captive wife fights for her life against a beast of a man. The product of a lot of hard work and passion, the ‘Crucible of Sin’ video series is reaching the apex. The response so far has been humbling, and hope our fans, and those new to the band, enjoy episode iv, ‘The Succubus and The Crucible of Sin’, a song dealing with our moral evolution as a species, and general moral relativism.”

The video is 4th episode in the band’s planned 5 part series to give fans a visual guide to tell the story of their latest EP “The Crucible of Sin”. “This song came together easily. We had been searching for a very rhythmic groove to insert under the guitar riff. Once Zak added the pulsing kick drum to the steady thumping bass riff we all squealed in delight. Our goal of creating a fun video to represent the vibe of the music while contradicting the lyrical content of the song resulted in the “Alien Pool Party” idea, stemming from Alex’s persistent insistence on having sexy aliens in some sort of minimal clothing atmosphere. Aiming for an old school look with psychedelic overtones; we definitely achieved it.”

“Cowards” is an album that is a heavy and hooky modern take on a classic sound with influences that are everything 90’s in grunge, stoner, alternative, and punk. It was conceived organically, performed and recorded DIY style at the home studio of drummer Zak Waterlow with mastering by Brock McFarlane of CPS studios in Vancouver. The album has a crisp and larger than life sound. With plenty of easter eggs that’ll have you searching for more from each listen.

After years of writing complex and intricate music, members of Slagduster embrace their musical roots in BADGUYSWIN and write a rock record that defies decades. Taking a more minimalistic approach, they’ve dropped the screaming and puzzling time signatures to create a sound that beckons back to a time when songwriting was key.

With influences ranging from Soundgarden to Queens Of The Stone Age and everything else in between, they are ready to deliver to this newborn puppy of hard rock that even the coldest of plaid wearing hipsters can enjoy.
