Rockshots Records: Nefesh Core Unveil Second Single “Scandal”

Debut Album “Getaway” Out September 2020

Italy’s Nefesh Core has signed with Rockshots Records for the release of their debut album “Getaway” on September 25, 2020.

The band was formed in 2018 by Dave Brown and Stefano “Ghigas” Calvagno, both known for their roles in the progressive metal band Metatrone. Ivan Newton is filling the line-up behind the drums and percussions.

Nefesh Core takes inspiration from the New Wave and Dark Music of the ’80s as well as mixing typical elements coming from the melodic hard rock and classic metal with ’90s Gothic Metal influence. One of the main features of the project is that Dave himself is in charge of the main vocals and keyboard parts.

“‘Getaway’ is the album of a new dawn. The first son of a new musical journey, the one-way road to get out of a life that’s not giving you the things you really need. It’s an album that has no place for compromises. It’s our heartbeat in a loop. Along with its 10 songs, it’s an unexpected journey into lands we weren’t in before, unknown places, forgotten memories that our instruments will offer to you. ‘Getaway’ is the flashlight that strikes darkness back, and lets you see through the hidden corners of your mind, soul and personality, and gives you the freedom of the truth, because, as Hegel said: the truth is the whole, and the whole is a process.” says the band.

Today the band is unveiling their second single, “Scandal”.

“We love this song for artistic reasons (has a great chorus and a grooving instrumental section) and for its contents. It’s a song that points the finger to those who think they are always by the right side of the truth. Those who never failed, the good ones, those who seek the perfect scandal to dress you off, even though the real scandal is them indeed. The family defenders who have two or more secret lovers, the champions of lies who speak of truth, and so on. Every lie they filled their mouth with is a ghost that they keep feeding day after day. Musically we love the chorus and instrumental action: you won’t resist jumping along with the song, we are sure of it!”

Nefesh Core is a new rock band made by the common idea of three long time musicians and friends, united by the love for the legendary New Wave and Dark Rock movement of the 80s mixed with musical elements coming from some modern hard rock, almost reaching for some gothic and industrial metal territories. Some of the main features in Nefesh Core are to have Dave Brown, well-known keyboardist and growler in the metal band Metatrone, as clean vocals, after the growl experience of the past years, and Ghigas, historical Metatrone guitarist, on bass, one of his old passions. Oozing with rock n roll vibes, Junkowl is coming for ya out of Montreal, QC, Canada. The 2019 “En Route To Heavy Montreal Champions” are a slick combination of stoner riffs, hardcore energy, and groovy bass, who recently released their debut album “Making Out With My Death” on June 5th.

While the band has been under lockdown like many others, they were able to get together to record a new off the floor acoustic version of their track “Crawling Up My Feet”. The track is a stripped-down version of a song about “falling in love with someone when you’re depressed or struggling with addiction, and essentially about how it’s pretty much impossible to love someone properly when you don’t love yourself” and truly showcases the raw emotion it projects.

As a whole, Junkowl‘s debut album “Making Out With My Death” is a slow dark ride. Heavy riffs; big dirty bass lines, in your face drums and gut-wrenching screams telling tales of self-loathing, confusion, and intoxication. This is a solid album, something to enjoy with a few beers, smoke a joint, and bang your head off for 30 minutes.

Heavy, sexy, and southern. Those are the best words to describe Montreal’s Junkowl.

Formed in 2017, their unique blend of groove metal, stoner, and hardcore is matched with high energy ‘in your face’ performances. A year earlier Jesse Frechette (vocals) met Dom Labrie (drums) and after a few jams they picked up Marco Larosa (guitar) and Samuel Matte (bass) and the rest is history. The writing process is a collaborative one, with melodies and vocals usually forming on the spot.

Moving through the underground music scene, Junkowl quickly made a name for themselves when they won the 2019 ‘En Route Vers Heavy Montreal’; a competition between nearly 200 bands, landing them a spot at that year’s edition of renowned metal festival Heavy Montreal.

On June 5th, 2020, they will release their debut album, “Making Out With My Death”, a 10 track record full of sultry and powerful songs about past regrets and self-destructive behaviour. It includes the band’s favourite “10,000 Vultures”, the first song Junkowl ever wrote, which was completed after the first jam together. Almost all the lyrics were freestyle during that jam.

Moonlight Desires might only play 80s cover songs, but you’d be wrong to dismiss them as just another cover band. Formed by long-time Hamilton, ON musician Trevor Ziebarth (Actor/Writer/Composer on Teletoon’s adult comedy series Sons of Butcher), Moonlight Desires is his ode to the raunchy romances and youthful misadventures of summer’s past. By re-working synth-laden pop hits of the 1980s, Ziebarth manages to turn familiar guilty pleasures into modern, guitar-driven rock anthems.

“For those unfamiliar, I created a television show with my brother Jay Ziebarth back in 2005 called ‘Sons of Butcher’. It was a unique adult comedy cartoon series that aired on Teletoon and was sold to over 200 countries around the world. The show was the first to blend video heads into a cartoon world. The Sons of Butcher characters worked in a butcher shop by day and were a spandex-clad rock outfit by night, with my character (Ricky Butcher) relentlessly trying to make it as a big rock star. As a companion to the show, Sons of Butcher recorded and released a few comedy rock albums using songs from the show as inspiration, and travelled across Canada twice on a sponsored tour by Teletoon. As a live band, Sons of Butcher used to perform heavied-up covers of 80s songs and they often became fan/crowd favourites. Ultimately, I noticed the positive response and it led to the formation of Moonlight Desires in 2013.” says Trevor Ziebarth.

As an homage to their Canadian music heritage, the band decided to take their name from the popular 80s song ‘Moonlight Desires’ by iconic singer/songwriter Gowan.

“I wanted to have a direct (1980s song) reference …but I also thought it would fit in nicely with the band’s heavier direction,” says Ziebarth.

While their 2014 debut album “Frankie Goes To Hamilton” delivered a rollicking arrangement of classic love songs, the band’s 2017 follow-up “Just The Hits: 1981-1985” transformed timeless hits such as “Sunglasses At Night” by Corey Hart and “Something About You” by Level 42 into party rock anthems. Satisfying that hunger to escape the shackles of reality with fun times and familiar hits,

Fast forward to 2020 and Moonlight Desires returns with another heavy dose of 80’s childhood nostalgia – this time themed around some of the most iconic films of the era! With “At The Movies”, Moonlight Desires take you on a sonic trip down memory lane – converting classic hits from Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Karate Kid and The Breakfast Club into modern sounding hard rock bangers!

“I wanted to pay homage to the most nostalgic 80’s movies from my youth to bring some happiness back to 2020! These movies were iconic and the singles are larger-than-life! I always wondered how they would sound all Heavy’d up!” adds Ziebarth.

New EP “Lockdown In Steeltown” Out Now!

Sons of Butcher, Canada’s most formidable “mock rock” band has a new collection of music out, aptly named “Lockdown In Steeltown”, themed around the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the first release from the band in four years, and it comes right after the announcement that Sons of Butcher will be creating a third season of their show themselves with the entire original team.

Sons of Butcher wrote the EP in the spring right when quarantine measures were enforced around the world and it goes through some of the experiences that SOB would likely be facing during that time. Initially, the track “Quaranteen” was meant to be a one-off, but more lockdown themed lyrics kept coming and an entire EP was forged. Meant to be a distraction from all the craziness, Sons of Butcher explains the EP:

“This EP is a look into the lives of these cartoon rockers as they’re forced to lockdown in place in their hometown of Steeltown. Each character is coping in their own way and has their own song to express it.”

Today, the band shares their new music video “Lockdown Phase One” filmed collectively with fans in their own personal lockdowns.

Sons of Butcher is a Canadian rock band consisting of four members, Ricky Butcher (vocals/guitar), Doug Borski (vocals, bass), Sol Butcher (vocals), Colin Van Ham Steak (lead guitar), and Sausage Ralph (drums).

Their music fuses vulgar absurdist comedy with rock music in a style that is described as “mock rock”.

Their band alter-egos are the focus of an animated television series developed by S&S Productions and aired on Canadian animation network Teletoon which follows the lives of two brothers who run a butcher shop. Butchers by day, rockers by night, the name ‘Sons of Butcher’ can also be taken literally as Ricky and Sol’s father was a butcher.

Admiring the comedy and rock fusion of bands like Tenacious D and Spinal Tap, the brothers came up with this idea in college around the year 2000. Passing a script off to one of the producers of the classic Canadian sitcom Red Green led to the show becoming a reality. After the first season aired, it became clear the fictitious band needed to come to life. Soon they were playing live shows and releasing albums.

Sons of Butcher has released 5 full lengths, Self-Titled (2005), Meatlantis (2007), Rise of the Steaks (2010), Fall of the Steaks (2010), and C Sections (2016).

Clad in spandex outfit, straight from the cartoon series, Sons of Butcher compliments their raunchy lyrics with onstage antics and sketchy and of course, their ferociously heavy tunes. There are even pepperette throwing and the signature meat tray that is paraded around the room for all to sample.

The comedic rock party has no plans of slowing down, in 2020 they will release an aptly timed EP “Lockdown In Steeltown” on June 19th via Infamous Butcher Records.

Champions in blending classic heavy metal, hard rock, and 80’s hair metal, Canadian shredders STRIKER‘s sixth studio album “Play To Win”, released via their independent label Record Breaking Records, has won the 2020 JUNO AWARD for Metal / Hard Music Album of The Year. As the most prestigious music award an artist can be given in the country, the 49th JUNO Awards were originally scheduled to be held at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on March 15th, 2020, but due to the COVID pandemic was forced to reschedule as a live stream on June 29th.

This was Striker‘s second JUNO Award nomination and first win.“We are very grateful for the Juno win this year, especially as an independent band. The Juno is the culmination of all the support from the Canadian music industry we’ve had, from FACTOR, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Canada Council for the Arts, and many others, and helps us feel validated as artists. “Ascend To The Throne” is a 7 track ripping and cohesive album and the second in the Saints of Death repertoire following the 2015 self-titled EP. With a different lineup than the debut effort, Saints of Death now boasts a more robust group that is tighter, more aggressive, and more melodic than ever before along with still featuring their signature sound of having two bassists. They quote about the new lineup:

“This album has been a long time coming, and we cannot wait to get it into the ears of our fans. Our current line up has been together since 2018 and we have really gelled as friends and as band members. Naturally, with this kind of chemistry going on, it was finally time to record a new album.”

Loud and crushing, Saints of Death has been evolving over the years and they are looking forward to what the future has in store for them. Comprising tracks that the band has wanted to release for a long time, it has been a waiting game until the right guys were in line to bring them to fruition. Now, the wait is now over and Saints of Death is primed to kick some ass!

Originally starting out as a Motorhead tribute band, Vancouver, BC’s SAINTS of DEATH is a four-piece that has taken the reins to write original material with a double bassist attack and set themselves apart from the pack with their uniquely heavy sound of thrash, doom and hardcore metal.

Inspired by the Mexican folklore of Santa Muerte (Spanish for Holy Death), SAINTS of DEATH is fronted by vocalist and eight-string bassist Twan Holliday, a giant standing nearly 7’ foot tall who can also be recognized for his acting credits in some well-known Hollywood movies and pro wrestling (credits below). Holliday is joined by four string bassist Juan Helluva, guitarist Ashley Blue and Christopher James on drums to complete this ferocious line-up.

Taking their experiences from past bands (Snaggletooth, Strapping Young Lad, Farewell to Freeway, Tides of Honor & more), these veterans of the Vancouver debuted their self-titled EP in 2015 and hit the road on a series of follow up tours! Getting great reviews with both online sources as well as physical press, the band quickly climbed to the top of the Western Canadian metal scene.

Soon after making a name for themselves in their home country, SAINTS of DEATH embarked on its first international tour of Mexico during November 2018 and has since returned two more times to play multiple festivals with acts such as Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), ELO, Dave Evans (Ex – ACDC), Neil Turbin (Ex – Anthrax) and many more successful acts.

After a short hiatus and a replenished new line up, SAINTS of DEATH recorded their first full-length album (2nd release) entitled “Ascend To The Throne” set for release on July 10th, 2020 via HeadRattle Productions.

The band adds:

“This album has been a long time coming, and we cannot wait to get it into the ears of our fans. After dealing with line up issues for a few years solid, we finally have a solid line up and are back to kicking ass. The current line up has been together since 2018 and we have really gelled as friends and as band members. Naturally, with this kind of chemistry going on, it was finally time to record a new album.

Like the first EP, there is diversity between each song, allowing each of them to stand out as hard-hitting singles. There is also the consistency that allows the songs to come together as a great album. We talk about important topics such as the trials of society, corruption and corporate greed, mental health as well as a few other topics on this album. We put a lot of hard work and passion crafting this album and making it what it is and we cannot wait to show the world!”

As soon as the COVID pandemic resolves and concert life can return to normal, expect SAINTS of DEATH to set the bar high with a live behemoth of ampage, theatrics backed by a custom light show, and pushing forward to take on the biggest stages and crowds to win over fans who enjoy headbanging to such bands as Motorhead, Lamb of God, Pantera, DevilDriver.

Fun Fact: Besides being a musician vocalist/bassist Twan Holliday has acting credits for movies American Mary (2012), The Devils Ground (2009) w/ Darryl Hanna, Stan Helsing (2009) (Leslie Neielson’s last movie), Catwoman (2004) w/ Halle Barry, Psych (TV Show) plus has done stunts on Super Natural (TV Show) and Pathfinder (2007). Twan was also a pro-hard-core wrestler of 10 years and was on TV every Saturday at 1 pm on KVOS TV12 (Bellingham, WA) plus was asked to train for WWE.

Entitled “Moments”, the full length is a series of personal occasions in the band members’ lives that they are reliving through their music, from hard times to the anniversary of the group forming. BIO:

From The Depth was formed officially at the end of 2008. In 2010, with their first solid line-up, they released the demo “The Will To Be The Flame”, which quickly sold out.

In 2011 the band signed with Rising Records for the release of their first studio album “Back To Life”, published and released worldwide in November of the same year. Meanwhile, they attended many European festivals playing alongside bands such as Megadeth, Sonata Arctica, Overkill, King Diamond, Iced Earth, Moonspell, Lordi, Sabaton, Rhapsody Of Fire, Dragonforce and more.

Between 2013 and 2015 the band went through some line-up changes, but slowly, during live shows, they started the writing process for the “Back To Life” successor. By the end of 2016, a new limited edition EP was published with the name of “Perseverance”.

From 2018 the actual stable line-up is in place and after some live gigs the band focused on studio material to finalize “Moments”. The album was mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio in January 2020 and features, among others, musicians like Roberto Tiranti and Giacomo Voli. While working on new material, the band leveraged new members’ ideas to write even more songs, and a new album is already written and in the early stage of production.

Lately, the band is also remixing and remastering “Back To Life” which is waiting for a new release, scheduled for the 10-year anniversary of the album in 2021.

“Back To Life” has everything and more when it comes to a solid power metal album. The songs flow together smoothly and are well balanced between reckless guitar solos and stunning piano work. Prior to unleashing their fourth studio album “The Last Extinction” this past May, Montreal melodic death metal quintet [EVERTRAPPED] shared the music video for the single “Sorrow (Nothing More In Between)”. Today, the band is showing fans the behind the scenes shooting of the video, which was filmed at the top of a high rise building in downtown Montreal during a very hot and humid day.

[Evertrapped]’s new album “The Last Extinction” is also being offered by the band for download on Bandcamp for only $1 HERE along with it available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Released on May 22, 2020, “The Last Extinction” is a mix of the band’s sound that was defined on “The Anomaly” (2012) and “Under The Deep” (2015). With influences ranging from death metal to melodic death primarily, along with some classic thrash and speed metal, which explains their technicality and diversity sonically, the album overall will give fans a very heavy post-apocalypse feel. It’s meant to mix the dark and light of the end of all things. Fans of Arch Enemy, Persefone, Whitechapel, Death, and Fleshgod Apocalypse will feel the whirlwind of aggression.

Vocalist James Brookes adds:

“The album overall has a very heavy post-apocalypse feel. It’s meant to mix the dark and light of the end of all things. For example, how the end would bring about great darkness so to speak in our minuscule occupied area of the universe, but at the same time it brings about this unexpected sense of bittersweet relief. Some songs are more down to earth in their subject matter but none the less written in an abstract way, whereas others take a more third-person look at this apocalyptic feel from a universal standpoint. I suppose the genre of the lyrics would be an equal mix of science fiction, fantasy, and dystopia.”

Since 2007, [Evertrapped] has brought together their collective experience from the Montreal metal scene to create their heavy brand of melodic death metal. The guitarists Frederick Dupuis (ex-Daggerfalls) and Vincent Benoit hammer out raw guitar while drummer Eric Lemire (ex-Apocalypsys, ex-Ice Castle) pummels the drums. Their versatile frontman James Brookes (ex-Ammonia, ex-One Final Moment, Continuum) easily alternates between strong clear vocals and low bellowing screams giving listeners the illusion of more than one vocalist. John Yates (ex-AraPacis) weaves together each song with his driving bass lines to keep the energy of the punishing track at an all-time high.

Their lyrics come from two places. One from the dark and exaggerated metaphors for things actually based on personal events. The other is lyrics that are only loosely based in reality and have an almost fantasy-like appeal. Sometimes the reality can be based on what could be the actual state of the world as it is or an image of a future where the world is on the brink of an apocalypse. The overall idea is that the lyrics are not meant to be understood at face value in any way. It’s an art form that’s open to interpretation by the listener.

Back in February, Canada’s Anvil released a new album “Legal At Last” celebrating the legalization of recreational cannabis use in the country. To support this album, the heavy metallers had a very thorough tour planned in the UK and Germany, with an assortment of other stops along the way. Unfortunately, like everyone else, COVID-19 stopped the tour in its tracks.

Still looking to bring their new album and to fans around the world they will be performing on the first Canadian heavy metal live stream put on by District 7 Production and L’Anti Bar & Spectacles on Saturday, July 4th, 2020. The event organizers see this as a win-win situation for everyone. They go into more detail:

“I was wondering how to make L’Anti Bar & Spectacles live again in the midst of a health crisis. I’ve been presenting virtual live shows with a ticket office since May 9. The first shows were appreciated by the spectators, we sold hundreds of tickets across Canada and in Europe during our first virtual shows. I wanted to present the first virtual metal show in Canada. I thought Anvil would be the perfect band for this show. I have an excellent relationship with them; the members of Anvil accepted without hesitation. Spectators should expect a virtual show with impeccable production quality in terms of sound, image, and lighting.”

Capturing the attention of audiences worldwide with their 2009 documentary film “The Story Of Anvil”, which bares all about the reality of the music industry, Anvil has been rocking stages since 1978. Once again, fans will be able to enjoy Anvil from the comfort of their own homes.

The soul in the solo and the gift of the riff. The blues from the heart and the colour in the art. Emerging from the underground of Montreal comes The Naked High. Joining forces in the summer of 2015, connected by a love of similar music ranging from blues to rock to metal, the dauntless quartet brings an electric chemistry to their music, amplified when they are on stage.
The Naked High is Hugo Leclerc-Charron delivering solos on guitar, Simon Ouellet with Iron Maiden-esque vocals, Phil Perreault keeping the low end steady, and Charlie Cayouette backing everything up with his rocking beat.Soon after they formed they began writing their first EP, the self-titled debut came out in 2017 and showed off their proclivity for catchy, smooth tunes with personal lyrics. Their wide variety of influences and love for rock n’ roll ensures their music is written effortlessly and naturally.

Sometimes it starts with a drum beat, or a bass line, or even a vocal line, regardless of how it starts out, it always turns into something melodic and passionate. Self-described as the ’70s meets Seattle, they combine two eras of music into their own distinct sound.

It didn’t take The Naked High long to become familiar with the stage and they have built a solid reputation and following. Focusing on charisma and providing an unforgettable experience, the band cooks up a strong live performance every time.

Fast forward to present 2020 and The Naked High have released another EP entitled “Tap Into The Evil” recently released on May 29th. The 6 songs show the evolution of their sound pushing forward into the next chapter of the band as they continue to learn from the legends that they admire while forging their own respective path in Rock N Roll.

“This Montreal band has some legit balls, and has made their debut with six tracks worthy of twenty year veterans. The Naked High is somewhere between metal and hard rock, with just a touch of doom. Excellent musicianship, songwriting and production quality (recorded, mixed and mastered at badass studio, wherever that is). I keep playing this one, and the digital download comes with lyrics, which are worth it for the song “Juice” alone (a song about Colonel Angus, so to speak). Here’s a good example of an album where the cover art pretty much performs perfect vetting for its clientele.
