EPK – Trollwar – Tales From the Frozen Wastes (2024) – Out Nov 15th

Publicist – Jon Asher – jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

“We think the EP will be received pretty well by our fans. Since Oath of the Storm, we have been working really hard on refining our sound, which is now aimed more at a melodic and symphonic dimension. On top of that, we added more progressive elements, and also exciting guests. This will be the most complex and complete Trollwar release, despite presenting only an EP.

“This EP aims at transporting the listener into a darker dimension, where shadows lurk and where deities reign supreme. The four songs are a succession of different events based on the realm of the dead, a falling pantheon and a glooming curse for adventurers who traveled to a place where they are not welcome. It is considered a pretty full experience with hints of progressive metal, black metal, and refined symphonic orchestration to push this whole dimension to a new level.” – Trollwar

For fans of Wintersun, Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, Kalmah, Equilibrium

“Trollwar waste no time lighting a fire under the listener with blazing and darting riffage, booming and battering drums, soaring symphonics, savage snarls, and heroic choral singing. But a finger-tapped guitar also introduces magically swirling melodies; grim vibrating fretwork and heavily jolting grooves throw us into fierce combat; and rippling keyboard tones add to the song’s fantastical glories. The band build toward an extravagant finale, hard-hitting and sky-flying, entirely in keeping with the song’s overarching mythic aura.” (Single – Bane of The Underworld) – No Clean Singing

“Quebec symphonic, melodic heroes Trollwar drop their next EP, Tales from the Frozen Wastes, on November 15… The record fuses the band’s roots with even more symphonic orchestration, progressive elements, and all-around big sounds. As always, the lyrics are also a big part of the journey, transporting you through to a fantastical realm.” – Decibel Magazine

“Vocalist Simon-Pierre Fortin-Leclerc commands with his growing vocal style, reminiscent of Necrophobic’s Anders Strokirk. The production exudes a warmness and clarity with the symphonic elements taking a backseat to the melodic guitars and heavy drumming…  The instrumental, folky opener “Prologue” segues into the 7-minute “The Unseen One”, tackling blackness and melodic guitar with smooth transitions that shows TrollWar at their best. Follow-up “Bane Of The Underworld” holds a triumphant gallop that is basically if Wind Rose added extreme elements to their music. A fist-pumping chorus elevates this one to the next level…. Good stuff and fills that need for some melodic, folky death metal.” – Bravewords

“No scene outplays another on this vivid EP. From start to finish, the blend of orchestration and metal is curated in a way that the Fantasy plays through, while the harshness of its tale is presented with wicked solos, stunning riffs, and masterful sound. As a Fantasy fanatic, and a metalhead, this EP is a stunning display of talent and imagination, utilizing skill and story to present to us one hell of an adventure. 9/10” – All Father Metal

“The 24 minute album may not last long, but it takes the listener on an epic, dark adventure with topics such as fallen gods, the realm of the dead and the consequences of too much ambition. The album’s music and lyrics are the result of years of hard work and growth and its story is fascinating. 4/5” – Metal-Rules

“A fine EP drenched in melody and saturated in musicality, this marks a new era for the band.” 8/10 – Powerplay Magazine UK

– Metallian France

” Do you find Amon Amarth a bit gloomy? The urge to go battle with axes is tempting you, but you don’t dare go out because it’s raining? Trollwar has the solution. With five tracks full of testosterone and enthusiasm, you’ll be ready to smash your opponents’ skulls and regain your zest for life. Inspired by Scandinavian and Greek mythology, but also by Elden Ring (yes indeed!), the lyrics send you into a warrior afterlife, where the key point, as you might guess, is to smash your enemies’ faces, all with a smile! While it’s true that no conquest of Valhalla has ever been this cheerful, the overall effect is devilishly effective and will delight fans of Wintersun or Ensiferum, as well as dungeon masters in search of an epic soundtrack to liven up their games. Just remember to put away the mugs of ale when it’s time for the pogo!” – Metallian France

“After six long years, this Quebec-based Folk/Death Metal horde attacks again with a new EP, boasting increased technicality and a new direction with their sound.” – The Headbanging Moose

“Trollwar adds to the legacy of killer Canadian epic/folk metal” – Teeth of The Divine

– Metal Universe QC

“For this short album, the band demonstrates incredible metallurgical know-how. The songs are easy to listen to and the 25 minutes go by in the blink of an eye: we would like more! Good riffs, catchy melodies, chantable choruses and a good dose of energizing aggression will satisfy any metalhead who likes to drink his mead from a horn. The whole thing fits perfectly with the stories told through the songs, whether about the Nordic goddess Hel, the Odyssey or even inspired by the game Elden Ring ! The band members claim that the EP marks a renewal in their sound, a new maturity for their music, which is very promising! The metal forged on Tales From the Frozen Wastes is top quality. Can we consider this as a taste of what the Quebec blacksmiths will offer us in the future? We can only hope! A band to watch closely.” – Metal Universe QC

“Last but certainly not least this week, we have some amazing folk-death out of Canada. It’s awesome too, a real epic slab of heaviness, catchiness and power. It’s like a more power metal-infused Amon Amarth, and I loved every second of it. From the huge intro into the amazing ‘The Unseen One’, the release starts off incredibly strong. Then you have the other three tracks which are equally amazing, and it really makes for a solid EP. Somehow I’d never heard of the band before despite them having three albums out, but I’ll definitely be going back to check those out now! The band have a big new fan in me, and this is another easy 8/10!” – OverTone Magazine

About The Album Artwork

The artwork represents the journey to the underworld, with a desolate land, ruled by a higher force, where darkness looms over all. Yet still, through this evil sky, light can be seen piercing the night. I think that it describes really how our music sounds. It reflects and captures the energy, which is by part epic and hopeful, and by part dark and malicious.

About the EP as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

I think our EP could really be described as a renewal. A renewal of our music and a new maturity for our music. I do think that you can hear it through our songs in this release. The Unseen One and In the Fields of Frost are both great songs that we wrote a couple of years ago, while Bane of the Underworld and The Offering are pretty much the new Trollwar that you should expect going forward. These two songs show a clear upgrade of how we write our music.

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

1. Prologue (Intro)

2. The Unseen One is a song inspired by Hel, the ruler of the underworld in Norse mythology. It speaks about her army of the dead being unleashed against the other gods.

3. Bane of the Underworld is a song about warriors sending their foes to their end. Thus being sent to the underworld. This song’s lyrics were written while reading the Odyssey so it might have a touch of Greek myths here and there.

4. In the Fields of Frost is about an adventurer being awakened amidst a desolate land, where higher deities scheme for power. This song’s lyrics are inspired by the game Elden Ring and its mysterious plot.

5. The Offering is a song about a band of warriors being cursed by an offering. Forced to eternally march against their foes they wander guided by the stars.

=====================================================

Band comments about EP Tracks:

The Unseen One:
‘’The Unseen One’’ was the first song that was written for the album. We are talking years ago. It has taken a way different approach as we refined it, with the ambient/symphonic elements being pushed forward, and also introducing both a Guest Synthesizer solo and a Guitar Solo. The breakdown in the middle of the song gives the listener an enjoyable build-up, leading slowly to an apex of dynamics and brutality.

The Unseen One is a song inspired by Hel, the ruler of the underworld in Norse mythology. It speaks about her army of the dead being unleashed against the other gods.

‘Bane of the Underworld:
‘’Bane of the Underworld ‘’ was a song that we worked on pretty recently. We previously had a skeleton for this song, but it went into a major facelift. We introduced progressive metal breakdowns with guitar-tapping melodies, and even a catchy piano melody to create a very enjoyable, yet technical layer on the song’s melodic breakdown. All of that mixed with a solid chorus.

As if it was not enough, some brutal old-school death metal-sounding riffs were introduced, and then mixed with some heavy symphonic elements, creating an intricate-sounding end to the song. The perfect icing on the cake.

Bane of the Underworld is a song about warriors sending their foes to their end. Thus being sent to the underworld. This song’s lyrics were written while reading the Odyssey so it might have a touch of Greek myths here and there.

In The Fields of Frost:
‘’In The Fields of Frost’’ is also a song that was basically composed years ago, and then reworked. It was always a song aiming to give the listener a ‘’Glorious’’ listening experience with great mixes of power-influenced melodies, a catchy chorus, and devastating riffs. We try to incorporate more and more ‘’pure metal riffs into our songs, keeping the whole songs complex, but enjoyable to the listener. This also creates epic moments in our live shows. The crowd loves good old-school brutal riffs.

This song is one of the less technically complex songs, but one that is really enjoyable and one that has definitely a ‘’vibe’’ to it!

In the Fields of Frost is about an adventurer being awakened amidst a desolate land, where higher deities scheme for power. This song’s lyrics are inspired by the game Elden Ring and its mysterious plot.

The Offering:
‘’The Offering’’ is the most recent song composition-wise. We think that this one is the best representation of up to where the ‘’Trollwar’’ sound has evolved. It contains some great Melodic Death Metal riffs, a good chorus, epic symphonies.. the whole package.

This is also the 2nd song where we have a guest coming in to push the limit of the song with astonishing power metal vocals and choirs.

The black-metal elements are also brought forward, with an epic evil bridge that will give chills to the symphonic black metal enjoyers.

The transitions are smooth and flow easily.

This is the last song of the album, leaving the listener with an enjoyable symphonic epilogue, and giving hints of something greater to come.

The Offering is a song about a band of warriors being cursed by an offering. Forced to eternally march against their foes they wander guided by the stars.

Quebec-based melodic symphonic metal band Trollwar gearing up to release their fifth record “Tales from the Frozen Wastes” on November 15, 2024. The band is excited to reveal the stunning album artwork, along with offering fans a glimpse into the dark and epic world they’ve created with a new album teaser. They share their thoughts on the recording:

“We think our album could really be described as a renewal. A renewal of our music and a new maturity for our music. We do think that you can hear it through our songs in this release. “The Unseen One” and “In the Fields of Frost” are both great songs that we wrote a couple of years ago, while “Bane of the Underworld” and “The Offering” are pretty much the new Trollwar that you should expect going forward. These two songs show a clear upgrade of how we write our music.”

“Tales from the Frozen Wastes” promises to be Trollwar’s most complex and complete release to date, showcasing the band’s evolution towards a more melodic and symphonic sound while incorporating progressive elements. The EP features five tracks, including a prologue, that will transport listeners into a darker dimension ruled by shadows and supreme deities.

The album artwork depicts a desolate landscape ruled by a higher force, where darkness looms over all. This visual representation perfectly captures the essence of Trollwar’s music – epic and hopeful, yet dark and malicious. It is recommended for fans of Wintersun, Ensiferum, and Amon Amarth.

Montreal, QC – September 25, 2024

Extreme Sci-Fi Fantasy VORAATH Announces Tour Dates w/ Green Jello, The Convalescence, Casket Robbery, Ignominious

New Music Video “The Road To Samm Hill” + New Album “Vol 1: The Hymn of the Hunters”

Extreme sci-fi storytellers, VORAATH announce they will be hitting the road for their last series of dates for 2024. They will be supporting The Convalescence on the “No Survivors Tour Part 2” from October 5th to October 14th along with select show dates with Green Jello, Casket Robbery, and Ignominious (dates listed below).

Transporting you through a portal of sci-fi storytelling and extreme music, VORAATH unleashed their first full-length “Vol 1: The Hymn of the Hunters” this past June on Exitus Stratagem Records (EXSR). Brutal yet epic metal, the level of detail that VORAATH has emphasized on this record exposes a grand story of interdimensional worlds and cosmic entities warring while paying homage to their culture in the Appalachian Mountains of the Carolinas.

“This album is an investment of thought and emotion. We want to immerse the listener in another world. It’s heavy yet sad, brutal yet immersive, so we hope to take everyone on a journey. That journey is scored with metal! We think this album will be something unique, a whirlwind of emotions and an auditory odyssey. We capsulated real events in our lives and laced them through our complex musical universe. We want the fans to feel the music, and ride along with us on this musical journey through our dystopian planet.” adds the band.

An odyssey of hardship, betrayal, survival, and cosmic tales, “Vol 1: The Hymn of the Hunters” is recommended for fans of Septic Flesh, Gojira, and Fleshgod Apocalypse, and is available at the following links:

“Crushing Sci-Fi Death Metal” – Metal Injection

“Celebrating Sci-Fi Dystopia, and a Debut Album, with Voraath… We’ve made mention of Carolina’s cinematic sci-fi proggy death metal aliens Voraath in this space before… Well, they’re back with yet another Shudder/SyFy worthy, seemingly budget-busting work of dystopian video art. “The Leviathan’s Keep”” – Decibel Magazine

“Voraath‘s aim is to do more than record and release music. The music is part of a universe they’re creating, drawing upon elements of horror and science-fantasy, which includes significant visual as well as audio portrayals, including the band’s own presentation of themselves on stage — each member appears as a character in the lore of the music” – No Clean Singing

“The fact that the troupe is already so mature and professional on their debut, but also so passionate about it, may be due to the fact, that all musicians were previously employed in other projects. But it wasn’t until VORAATH that they obviously found the repository of their creativity and, completely surprisingly, created a small milestone with “Volume 1: Hymny Of The Hunters!” 9/10″ – PowerMetal.de

“Voraath’s “Vol 1: The Hymn of the Hunters” isn’t just an album; it’s a meticulously crafted portal into a nightmarish realm where each track unfolds a new chapter of struggle and revelation. With their blend of brutal aggression and melodic nuance, Voraath sets a new standard in storytelling, promising listeners an immersive experience that transcends genres and challenges the boundaries of a musical literary experience. Embrace the darkness and join the hunt—Voraath awaits, ready to lead you through their extreme metal multiverse with unparalleled intensity and imagination.” – Metal Lair

“Voraath‘s Vol 1: The Hymn of the Hunters is a meticulously crafted journey through a rich, dystopian world. The band’s ability to blend metal with intricate storytelling sets them apart, creating an immersive experience that is both brutal and thought-provoking. Voraath has set a high bar with their debut, promising even greater adventures in the metal multiverse they are meticulously crafting.” – Amplify The Noise

“this first Voraath album sends us into a cosmic epic” – Eklektik Rock

“The Barrens offers a blend of crushing riffs and distinctive soundscapes, delivering a unique cinematic soundtrack.” – Metal Insider

“US band Voraath are out with the album “Vol 1. The Hymn of the Hunters”, and this is a production that might well be of interest for fans of progressive metal. And a case could be argued for this album to be defined as extreme progressive metal too. Tight, form and hectic extreme metal is at the core of this album, with a handful or so of distorted lead vocals combining with hard and tight guitar and rhythm combinations as the core elements throughout…. An album for those who tend to enjoy a more sophisticated and dynamic variety of extreme metal that may possibly also be defined to reside inside of the extreme progressive metal tradition.” – Progressor

Manuel Barbará Drops Heavy, Progressive New Video “Aphelion”

Blade Runner Themed Metal EP “Whisper in a Storm” Out Now!

Metal guitarist and composer Manuel Barbará is excited to release his latest video for the track “Aphelion” off the recently released EP “Whisper in a Storm”. The song features Michael Nystrom Bala, the 80s half of Necronomicon Ex Mortis’ guitars. The single showcases Barbará’s signature blend of heavy metal aggression and classical music’s formal, harmonic concepts. He shares his thoughts on the track:

“Aphelion is designed to be heavy and scary. It was super cool to design two similar solo sections that I could split with my dear friend Mike. The original idea for this song was “What if I took a straightforward unga-bunga riff and made it weirder and weirder every time it happens”. I think it really features the difference in our styles. I hope someone moshes to this one”

The single starts with a big stompy intro with slightly alien harmony and goes through a process of transformation and fragmentation until it comes back to its original form and immediately falls apart again. The two solos, by Barbará and Bala, contrast one another very nicely.

“Aphelion” represents a perfect balance between technical prowess and emotional depth. Barbara’s intricate guitar work forms the foundation of the track, while Bala‘s guest solo adds a layer of intensity that elevates the composition to new heights. The result is a journey through musical textures that captivate and challenge listeners in equal measure. It is recommended for fans of Meshuggah, Keith Merrow, and Monuments.

Watch and listen to the music video for “Aphelion” via its premiere on Bravewords HERE.

Released on September 13, 2024, “Whisper in a Storm” is available at https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/manuelbarbar/whisper-in-a-storm

“the song (A Different Horizon (feat. Jake Howsam Lowe (Plini)) blends metal heaviness and classical music concepts to create something intricate, unique, and highly technical.” – Decibel Magazine

“Berklee trained and steeped in metal music, composing, and shredding, the EP (Whisper in the Storm) is going to unite die-hard metal fans and guitar geeks alike. The first single off this EP is “Dead Hand,” which features Jody Miller, a renowned violinist in the video game music scene.” – Ghost Cult Magazine

“If a sophisticated and often elegant variety of mainly instrumental progressive metal is a subject matter of particular interest, and you are fond of such creations exploring the entire span from gentle and melodic all the way towards the extreme, then you will find this EP quite the rewarding experience I’d imagine.” – Progressor

BornBroken members reflect on the creative journey and the deep themes explored in their new work:

“We wanted to create something raw and real. Creating ‘Am I Invisible’ was an intense and rewarding process. This album is incredibly personal for all of us. We poured our hearts into every beat, every note. It’s a journey through our highs and lows.”

Musically, “Am I Invisible” allowed BornBroken to experiment with their roots in metal and its structures. “… the song (“How Strong You Are”) includes an anthemic and inspirational chorus, where the vocals rise into impassioned singing. But don’t expect music that feels like it’s seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. The music itself puts up with no excuses, but instead punches fast and damned hard. Backed by battering percussion and thundering basslines, the song includes fiery, writhing riffage and hard-slugging, high-howling hardcore fury. It does soar in the catchy chorus, but even there the vocals also rabidly snarl, and the band always return to pile-driving the listener’s neck, punctuated by some start-stop bursts of high-speed jackhammering and gruesomely growled words. On top of all that, the song includes a fluidly slithering and swirling guitar that itself spirals high, and a finale in which the vocals become truly harsh and scarring while the band inflict one last brute-force beating.” – NoCleanSinging

“”Am I Invisible” by BornBroken is a masterful exploration of the human experience. Its blend of aggressive metal with deeply personal themes creates an album that is both thought-provoking and sonically impressive.” – Din Intunerec

“BORNBROKEN, a name to remember which risks making a lot of noise with this monstrous and devastating new album from Neo Death Thrash groove with a little touch of subtlety.” – OdyMetal

0 Canadian Post-Metal ATOMIS Shares New Video “Awakening” Off “The Void Box Set” In Memory of Drummer’s Passing

Canadian Post-Metal ATOMIS Shares New Video “Awakening” Off “The Void Box Set” In Memory of Drummer’s Passing

Top Left: Taylor Johnson (Guitar), Top Right: Nathan Navetto Drums, Bottom Left: Matthew McLaughlin (Guitar/Vox/Keys), Bottom Right: Bryan Buss (Bass)

Releasing their “The Void Box Set” this past August that featured their complete discography to honour their late drummer Nathan Navetto, Calgary, Canada’s progressive post-metal act Atomis is sharing their latest video for the track “Awakening”.

The song is an epic over 14 minutes in length and featured on the band’s 2014 self-titled album. Although its placement is the 2nd track, the entire song carries you through the album like a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th track would, roaming up through hills, storms, and into the black of night. It’s down tuned to B, and even low as G# in the studio for certain parts, it gets as heavy as it gets beautiful.

Watch and listen to the video for “Awakening” at https://youtu.be/jb-TnZNrMXQ

Previous videos can also be viewed at the following links:

Music Video “12 Chains” (directed by Doug Cook) at https://youtu.be/udWaS1o69UQ

Music Video “Maelstrom” – https://youtu.be/xYRM2gJZZT4

“The Void Box Set” is a complete collection that spans a decade ranging from a high production debut album of previously unheard music to an experimental version of the album – “Nathan’s version” – called “Welcome to the Void”, which includes a remix of the debut album, plus 8 bonus ambient/experimental tracks fully written by Nathan. Closing up the box set is a Live off the Floor demos album of songs Atomis performed live regularly from 2010-2014. These are the songs that the local scene would recognize and songs that sadly never made it to the studio. The band comments on the release:

“This collection is long-awaited and well-deserved. Due to a variety of circumstances, and after many false starts, and the passing of our drummer and bandleader Nathan Navetto in 2020, the album never came out. We still have fans of our first single ‘Maelstrom’ asking about “The Album”, so we’re pleased to now share the entirety of our catalog in the form of a box set. Some finished, some half-baked, and some completely raw and recorded with a single microphone inside a concrete jamspace.”

Atomis pulls from all aspects of inspiration, be it cinema, poetry, or nature, and tries to make an enveloping experience. The Void Box Set showcases the entirety of Atomis from the drawing board, to a polished album, but in reverse. It is recommended for fans of The Ocean, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Radiohead.

Released on August 30th, 2024, “The Void Box Set” is available at https://atomismusic.bandcamp.com/

What the press has said about them:

“The Void Box Set’ is a tribute to ATOMIS‘ legacy and the creative vision of drummer Nathan Navetto, who passed away in 2020. This collection captures the band’s willingness to push the boundaries of post-rock and metal, blending crushing riffs with serene ambient soundscapes. ‘The Void Box Set’ is a must-have for fans of experimental metal and those seeking a profound musical journey through the void. 8/10” – Infrared Magazine

“The album of the same name “Atomis” with a running time of 38 minutes on just four songs, it’s very impressive. Here we find songs that are purely instrumental and not just suitable for sci-fi films. Let’s take it “12 Chains”, the opener With a very quickly recognizable sound structure, there are booming rhythms here that at the same time give the impression of stopping in one place. The drums still ensure further movement. With mystical tones, mixed with spherical elements, a thoroughly intoxicating track.” – Hellfire Magazin

“The songs are epic and can almost be described as soundscapes, as they incorporate everything from crushing metal riffs to peaceful ambient noise.” – Matt Petti, Beatroute Magazine

“Before the first viewing of the video, Canadian director and film-maker Doug Cook gave an introductory speech about the making of the video and working with Atomis. They created a video that perfectly complimented the band’s music and fans asked to watch it a second time (and then even a third time before the venue closed). Cook has been working with many Calgary metal bands lately, such as Divinity, Orphan Hammer and the Unravelling. He has also worked on some videos that may be a little more well known around the globe including “Breaking the Broken” by Control Denied, “Prolong the Agony” by Morta Skuld and the upcoming video for Death’s “Pull the Plug”.” – Evilg – Metal Sucks
