Canada’s progressive power gothic metal band Red Cain unleashed their new album “Kindred: Act II” digitally this past January with the CD physical release due out via Sliptrick Records later date this year.

Today, the band presents their latest visualizer for their track “Precipice of Man”.

Vocalist Evgeniy Zayarny adds:

“A ballad, but also…not? Certainly the most experimental track on this album, “Precipice of Man” was born out of focusing entirely on capturing the story and atmosphere related to the track from note one, and creating a musical landscape supporting those elements. Utilizing falsetto vocals and electronic touches not found in other tracks, “Precipice of Man” still keeps the weight and urgency of the album, but provides a necessary introspective and cautiously uplifting element.

Within the “Kindred” concept, this is a track that “takes stock” of the world of the album at the time, featuring three parts from the POV of three characters: the opening stanzas from Zalcoatl’s companion Juliet urging him to push on (“take my hand and step out onto the precipice of Man”), the Nameless Exarch’s ominous Latin chants in the middle of the track as he commands his hordes, and Zalcoatl’s meditation on the role of humanity (“all their songs, they weren’t meant for us…but we are all that’s here”). The track hits a crescendo with an uplifting, determined chorus from all our protagonists together – “There is life in the ashes, there is smoke upon the shore – and your weary hands hold the fate of more than you can know” – showing that there is still hope on the journey to the Sun.”

Described as a vehicle of “Melancholy and Rage” and born out of the emerging music scene of Calgary, AB, 2017 YYC Awards Metal Recording of the Year winner Red Cain is a power/progressive metal project with Russian roots. With intricate songwriting, a heavy yet melodic feel reminiscent of progressive acts, and elements of Slavic myth and Russian paganism in the storytelling tradition of the cult of Veles, Red Cain champion a fluid, dynamic, and unique musical style centered around telling dark, conceptual Faustian sagas and constructing those into an unforgettable live experience.

Their new sophomore full-length continues and ends the band’s storytelling of their Kindred saga, which began with their 2019’s “Kindred: Act: 1”. Offering a mix of melodies and metallic styles in power, progressive and goth metal, Red Cain continues to deliver epic adventurous songs with tracks like Sunshine (Blood Sun Empire)”, “Demons”, “Kindred” and “Varyag and The Shrike”.

Montreal’s Maudiir has a new single out, “Spirit of Sulfur” being premiered on Decibel Magazine HERE.

The second single is from the upcoming EP “La Part du Diable” due out on February 19, 2021.

The fourth of five tracks, “Spirit of Sulfur” is where it starts to get more experimental on the EP. Very bass-driven, the contagious harmonies flirt with thrash and punk, and it then develops into a kind of space rock instrumental section. The abrasive lyrics are about deceitful leaders grinding down their countries.

The biggest benefit to a solo project is being unrestricted in style and creative direction, something that is fully embraced in Maudiir’s work. An aggressive blackened thrash base is complimented with upbeat punk drumming and a heavy focus on the bass parts, resulting in a fresh take on modern metal. This uncommon attention to bass riffs resulted in this single, as Maudiir explains:

“On the first single, ‘The Slumber’ I was switching things around when I got to the bass parts. After that, I thought “why not try to write a whole song on bass?” That experiment yielded the track ‘Spirit of Sulfur’. That was very interesting for me; getting out of my comfort zone trying to figure out guitar parts that would complement the main bass lines.”

Riff-driven with big bass grooves and corrosive vocals, “La Part du Diable” is the second release from the one-man project to follow the debut EP “Le Temps Peste” released in February of last year. The intense, dark music comes with lyrics that draw on societal reflections, religion, and the environment.

Maudiir is recommended for metalheads looking for something new, especially fans of Carcass, Darkthrone, and Skeletonwitch.

About:
Maudiir, coming from the underbelly of Montreal, Quebec, Canada is an outlet for observations on obedience and industrialization riddled with man-made waste. With 80s heavy metal influences alongside black metal and punk, Maudiir is unique in sound; hauntingly dark while being corrosive and galloping.

Maudiir is a one-man black/thrash metal project that formed to be musically independent. Starting with guitar, F. works his way through each sullen track, adding drums, recording all the colorations and textures of the guitars, adding bass, and finally writing the words, very often at the same time they are being recorded.

The pessimistic aura of the music combines with lyrics about consumer society, religion, science going awry, addiction to technology, and environmental decay.

Maudiir released their debut EP “Le Temps Peste” during February 2020 and now returns exactly a year later with the follow up “ La Part du Diable”

Creating an intensely dark sound, “La Part du Diable” was inspired by reactions from people to the health crisis created by Covid, the political climate in the US, and conspiracy theories. It’s a riff-driven  EP with big bass grooves and corrosive vocals, mixing thrash metal and black metal with progressive elements, giving it a unique sound and feel.

“I would say that with “La Part du Diable”, I’m going into a slightly more progressive and thrash sound than on the first EP. I also added distortion to the bass guitar this time around, which I think adds a Voïvod feel to the songs.”

After winning over new audiences with their acclaimed 2018 debut full-length “Age of Revolution” and touring relentlessly alongside fellow shredders such as Marty Friedman, Powerglove, and Exmortus, IMMORTAL GUARDIAN gathered in Las Vegas last year to begin recording their second album. “Psychosomatic” is a product of the extraordinary events of 2020. The result is a truly multi-national record, with guitarist/keyboardist Gabriel Guardian remaining in Las Vegas, vocalist Carlos Zema recording his vocals from his home in Brazil, new drummer Justin Piedimonte joining the band from his hometown in Montreal, Canada, and new bassist Joshua Lopez remaining in IMMORTAL GUARDIAN‘s native Texas.

The group, founded by Gabriel Guardian, whose uncanny ability to play guitar and keyboard simultaneously has been showcased on MTV’s “Amazingness” along with his unique dual-instrument covers of classics by the likes of Iron Maiden, Pantera, and Guns N’ Roses have garnered hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and have been built upon the band’s following through multiple self-released EPs before signing with M-Theory Audio for the 2018 release of their first full-length record, “Age of Revolution”. The band has also performed live alongside some of the biggest names in metal, including Judas Priest, Dragonforce, Kamelot, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica, Slayer, Metal Church, Soilwork and Steve Vai, and in countries such as Brazil and Russia, and during high-profile performances at ESPN’s X Games, South By Southwest and the Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Today, Cell Press’ guitarist Sean Arsenian shares his playthrough for the band’s noise track “My Son Will No The Truth”.

Arsenian adds:
“This track is the long noise jam on the debut Cell Press EP. PQ caught the guitar tracking on video so I synced it up with the final master.

At Sean Pearson’s suggestion, we built this piece by only allowing the performer to hear the prior track. In this case, I was improvising guitar noise with only the drums in the cans. Mcgee had laid down the drums only having heard a strange loop that Pearson made. we continued down that line till we’d painted some sort of insane sonic landscape. Sean Pearson later mixed it all into what you have here, and it was one of the most fun experiences in the studio with buddies I’ve had in years.

I played this IO guitar made by my friend Nick Brygadyr. He makes very nice guitars. It has a pearly gates in the bridge position because I heard that’s what the guy from Cherubs uses and it sounds great. I split the signal into two amps, with a couple of pedals going into each, but kept it pretty simple. Volume plus vibration equals noise. Thanks for watching! and this is probably a journey best taken with headphones.”

Cell Press are a Montreal-based band that formed in 2019. They play a sort of burly noise-rock that leans more on the hardcore and metal side of the swamp. They took their name from the 2001 Russian prison documentary “The Mark Of Cain”. The brutal humanity of that film is reflected in the music… on the surface, it’s raw and punishing but there are complexities

Fun Facts / Story Angles:

1. This album as well as our previous EP was recorded at Wolf Lake Studios in Lac-des-Loups, Quebec. It’s a unique experience to record there as essentially, it’s a studio in a cabin in the woods. The area is very atmospheric and there’s aren’t that many outward distractions around so we can be productive and focus on the music. It’s like a camping trip mixed with the recording.

2. The album was mastered by Jack Kosto who the most well-known for being the lead guitarist in the power metal band Seven Spires.

3. We brought in a professional chamber choir for the song “Fallen Angels Prayer” on the new album

4. During November 2019, Lycanthro performed at the November Mayhem fest in St Johns Newfoundland. It was the 1st time we had played a show outside of Ontario/Quebec and it was an unforgettable experience. Getting flown in made us feel like rock stars and it was in a 350-person venue that was full! That coupled with experiencing the food, sights, and people made our show in Newfoundland an unforgettable one!

5. Lycanthro played a show during June 2019 in Toronto, ON, and on a boat! Every year our promoter friend Karina Davy of Neurotic Entertainment hosts her birthday concert called “Rock The Boat” where she’ll get three metal bands to play on the boat. It was a very unique and memorable experience but I (James) blew out my vocal chords during that show. Talk about suffering for your art!

Track by Track explanation by James Delbridge:

1. Crucible was technically the 1st official Lycanthro song, I wrote this song back when I was in high school because we read the book “The Crucible” in English class. Also, I actually wrote the lyrics of this song while I was in English class instead of doing my school work. The story of “The Crucible” really fascinated me and I felt as though it would translate perfectly into a metal song. There are also references to other witchcraft stories such as William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” as well. In terms of the music, I was aiming for kind of a Judas Priest meets Death vibe and I think that got pulled off on this track.

2 .“Fallen Angels Prayer” – This song is the epic of the album. Lyrically it tells the story of the “Hunchback of Notre Dame” and Quasimodo’s sympathy towards the gypsy’s for being oppressed in the story, as well as his love for Esmerelda. I knew this song had to have a big and epic feel to it. I would akin this song to kind of our take on a Kamelot style song with lots of diverse instruments such as Piano, Flute, Violin, and a full-on choir! The choir we recorded live off the floor and it added the gigantic feel that we wanted out of this song.

3. Enchantress tells the tale of a man who is wandering through the woods and happens across a woman. She descends from the sky and the man instantly falls in love. He thinks he has already died and that she is an angel but in reality, she’s a demon who’s there to lead him to his death. It’s sort of a similar plotline to Triumph’s “Spellbound” video but with a much darker edge. In terms of the music, this song’s 1st half has sort of a power/groove feel to it with lots of odd chords and guitar harmonies. Then in the 2nd half, it gets a more distinctive Iron Maiden/NWOBHM feel to it with the fast chugging guitar parts. Also, this track has one of my favourite moments on the album at the very end where there’s an Yngwie Malmsteen style guitar run to close the song.

4. “Mark of the Wolf” – This song is a great straight forward headbanger that is akin to the styles of Iron Maiden and Motorhead. It also has some of the weirdest and difficult guitar passages of the whole album in the verses of the song. In terms of the lyrics, this is 1 of 2 songs on this album that is based on the videogame Skyrim. This song in particular talks about the Companions, a group of mercenaries in the game who can turn into Werewolves.

5. “In Metal We Trust” – We figured that we needed a sing-along song for a live setting that will be a crowd-pleaser so then we wrote In Metal We Trust. We wanted a song that really channeled the spirit of old school Priest style metal with catchy riffs and memorable melodies, along with a chant they everyone can sing along to.

6. “Into Oblivion” – This song is the 1st of 2 songs on this album that was written before Lycanthro was a band, Into Oblivion was actually the 1st or 2nd song I’ve ever written. It also probably the old ball song on the album with having a groove metal vibe to it along with one of the few breakdowns we have in our songs along with an Annihilator-esque guitar solo. Lyrically it has to do with zombies, but the inspiration for the lyrics came from a fungus that is known as “Zombie Fungi” as it can claim control of the host mind, but this fungus has only been seen in bugs, but it fascinated me so that’s what the lyrical basis of the song is.

7. Ride the Dragon is the 2nd of the songs that I wrote before Lycanthro was even a band. It is also the song that has gone through the most amount of changes. Lyrically this is the 2nd song about Skyrim, more specifically when the Dragonborn rides the dragon Odavigg to Sovangarde. This song has a vibe that I can only describe as Iron Maiden mixed with Triumph with some great peaks and valleys within it. As well as most of the vocals on the song being layered with is something I’ve wanted to do a long time and it turned out amazing!

8. “Evangelion” – This song is the closest thing we have to a power ballad on this album. This song was a passion song for me as it took me a year to write it! Mainly because I wrote this song bit by bit while I wrote some of the other songs. Lyrically this song is based on the anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion” which is a show that is very near and dear to my heart. As for the music, there’s a few cool synth lines in the song that gives it an epic feel as well as one of the more melodic guitar solos on the album. This song I find has some epic Dio vibes to it reminiscent of tracks from him like “Last in Line” and “Stargazer from Rainbow. From the get-go, we knew this song would be perfect to close the album on an epic and triumphant note.

Lycanthro are a four-piece Power/Thrash metal band that formed in 2016 in
Ottawa, Canada. They combine power, thrash, and speed metal, along with an energetic and epic stage presence with their lyrical themes from classic horror and mythology.

Lycanthro introduced themselves to the Candian metal scene with the release of their self-titled demo followed soon after by their 2018 EP “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”.

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS

1. The self-titled album was written and recorded entirely in the basement of Isabelle’s house in Scarborough. Work was often interrupted by one of her 4 cats sneaking into the recording space to wreak havoc.

2. The album cover and art direction was done by Anthony and photographer Danika Zandboer, who shot the iconic cover image for Vile Creature’s recent release “Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm!”. The mask featured on the cover is one of a series that were created by psychedelic artist Marcela Calderon Donefer.

3. The band name comes from Transient Ischemic Attacks, a kind of stroke. Isabelle is a nurse and heard the term often, prompting her to suggest it. The band quickly agreed, as our second choice of “Necrosis” was found to be in use by approximately 32 other metal bands at the time.

4. Ischemic’s first gig, the Headbanging for a Cure event, raised exactly $2112.00, wildly exciting all Rush fans in attendance.

5. Ischemic’s drummer also happens to be the best guitarist in the band.

Track by Track explanation:

At 6 minutes long, “Scabs” is our version of a single! Pure 80s death-metal filth contrasted with crushing, doomy choruses and crusty black-metal leads, with a classically face-melting solo from Adam at its center.

“Crawl out of Hell” is an ode to the Sisyphean attempts of man to escape the hell we’ve made for ourselves. The track first appeared in primitive form on our “Frigid Descent” demo but we decided that it deserved a second life with our new lineup, so it was rearranged and cleaned up with crushing new production.

“Illusion of Humanity” is a barrage of blackened sludge riffs, with an almost stoner-rock level of elastic heaviness. The song concerns the tension between the mask of modern humanity and our still-active lizard brains, the riffs maintain a rumbling buildup that eventually lashes out at itself in violent grief.

“Scattering Garden” is the epic centerpiece of the album that swings from atmospheric clarity to skull-crushing doom, with brief pearls of optimistic melody. Clocking in at 22 minutes and 22 seconds, “Scattering” brings together all the elements that make Ischemic unique, ending on an intensely triumphant crescendo.

Ischemic formed in 2012 through the unholy power of Kijiji, where both Isabelle Tazbir (vocals/lyrics) and Adam Korchok (guitar) were searching for fellow ghouls to play some sort of doomy, monolithic death metal. They linked up and began to pull together people from their respective friend groups to play in the band. It wasn’t long before the lineup was solidified and Ischemic could begin churning out filthy, crushing metal from the void.

Ischemic works collaboratively, riff skeletons are brought to the rest of the members, then cursed with flesh. This cohesiveness has resulted in 4 recordings:  “Frigid Descent” (2013); “All Paths Lead Nowhere” (2016); “Stagnation & Woe” (2018); and “Ischemic” (2021). The earlier records resonate with filthy, hellish, death/doom sounds that give way to experimentations in melodic black metal with “Stagnation & Woe”, and a revisit to the past in the most recent album.

The experienced musicians also lend their talents to other local acts; Tazbir has done time as a vocalist in the death metal bands Saprophyte, Serene Molestation, and Blastomycosis, and is currently in Experiment Specimen. Anthony Abbatangelo (bass) plays in the drone/psych band Qarafa and occasionally records and mixes projects for local bands. Mrudul Kamble (drums) fronts the progressive/death metal act Mors Verum and is working on launching a recording studio from his new home in Waterloo, ON.

The live show (post covid times) from Ischemic is both unsettling and energetic. What little light is permitted showcases disjointed, violent movements as Tazbir lures you into their tales of woe. They have shared the stage with the likes of Volur, Greber, Woe, Beyond Creation, and Iskra.

Ischemic’s new self-titled album is due out April 2, 2021.

The Doom video game franchise has been going strong for almost 30 years, and the adrenaline-packed stomp through hell has one of the most aggressive, recognizable soundtracks to gamers across the globe. Motion Device’s drummer David Menoudakis has taken the world-renowned carnage and warped it into a new form as a drum cover presented on his YouTube channel DrumsByDavid.

On his channel, Menoudakis covers “Cultist Base” from Doom Eternal (2020) combining his drum playing with unique visuals that sets it apart from other drum covers. The video also includes gameplay and extra visual effects adding to the underworld chaos. Menoudakis comments on the video:

“I chose the track because Doom has been one of my favourite games for a long time and the soundtrack (composed by Mick Gordon) is just legendary with gamers who love heavy soundtracks like myself. I put out drum covers on a weekly basis and really enjoy all the tunes and fan requests, but this kind of video allows me to showcase what I can do technically as a drummer and also as a video editor which is something I’m getting into a lot more lately. I’m also learning a lot about sound so pushing the audio boundaries as much as possible is really important to me – I want viewers to hear a great, quality audio mix when they watch one of my drum videos. I really enjoyed putting this together and I plan on doing a lot more of it in the near future.”

Menoudakis plays in the Toronto-based progressive band Motion Device with two of his siblings and their cousin. To date, they have put out four albums so far and received recognition from many big name musicians like Steve Vai, the Scorpions and Alice Cooper to name a few.

“Cultist Base” is recommended for heavy music aficionados and gamers alike, especially those who enjoy Carpenter Brut, Black Crown Initiate, and Ministry.

About:
Motion Device is an independent hard rock band from Canada led by vocalist Sara Menoudakis, along with Josh Marrocco on guitar, Andrea Menoudakis on bass/keys, and David Menoudakis on drums.

The formation of the band just seemed to fall into place between the Menoudakis siblings, and their cousin Marrocco. Each member played a key instrument and shared similar musical tastes and inspirations. After starting out as a cover band, they slowly but surely found themselves writing, recording and producing their own music and once that began there was no looking back.

“Setting The Stage” is the debut solo EP from New York’s Jeff Pennachio (guitarist for Design The Void), containing three instrumental tracks that are composed in the style of fantastical soundtracks, creating an intricate picture that listeners can experience now.

To indulge fans further, Pennachio has recorded a playthrough video of the single “Interposition”. In it, viewers can learn how to play the parts of the song, or simply enjoy watching a talented musician in his element.

Pennachio pays great attention to his individual compositions, weaving cinematic riffs together with layers of orchestral pieces, which finalize in an elaborate symphony suited for a feature film. About:
Jeff Pennachio comes from New York State in the USA and besides being known for his guitar playing in Design The Void, he is also releasing his own solo work.

Between 2016 and 2018 he wrote the solo material while in a cover group titled The Stay. The group did not steer in the direction so much of original music, but the inspiration was there to start composing music of this sort. He began working on the tracks as a small compilation for potential future work. After a couple of years had passed, Pennachio has finally taken the time to release this music to the public.

Pennachio writes and records all guitars, drums, bass, and orchestrations and will be continuing on composing music that takes inspiration from soundtracks. He also finds inspiration in bands such as Dream Theater, Plini, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. His debut solo EP “Setting The Stage” is due out January 22, 2021.
