Since 2010, Ottawa’s A SCAR FOR THE WICKED (ASFTW) has been clawing their way through the Eastern Canadian metal scene playing fast, evil and energetic songs inspired by horror shows and films. Their favorite themes encompass zombies, demons and other evil creatures and for them, each song is executed as a short horror story accompanied by heavy music. Like most horror stories this is not for the faint of heart.

Fueled by a passion to bring horrific and grotesque sounds to their fans, A SCAR FOR THE WICKED are unleashing their third EP “The Unholy” on June 29, 2018. Full of face melting heaviness and a dark and evil atmosphere that offers more sickening death metal to the unsuspecting world, “The Unholy” follows their 2012 Machiavellian hymn to the dead “Scars” and 2014’s brutal assault “The Necrobutcher”.

Before it officially scares the masses, ASFTW have entered the mosh pit with New Noise Magazine for the exclusive full stream premiere for “The Unholy”.

Take a listen at https://newnoisemagazine.com/stream-scar-wicked-unholy/

The band comments:

“‘The Unholy’ is a step up from our previous EP ‘The Necrobutcher’. It’s heavier, more technical, faster, more melodic and flows very well from front to back. Silverwing Studios did an excellent production. The vocals often alternate from low to high in range and is accompanied by powerful backing-vocals. Every track is hard hitting and overall the EP and lyrical content have a very dark feel to them.”

“Filled to the brim with captivating melodies and brutal precision, the band raises their own bar on the upcoming EP, and will surely twist some heads in the future.” – Metal Injection

“It’s catchy while maintaining aggression, and the melodic guitarwork is quite frequently the highlight of each track.” – Dead Rhetoric

“this EP is a real stand-out, well-varied, aggressive as fuck and loaded with metallic brilliance. ” – Merchants of air

“This EP is a complete force of death as it ushers forth seven life draining and blood letting rituals. Through and through this is a monstrous and devastating record, one that piles you up among the rest of the cadavers once everything is all said and done. The Unholy is a savage and unhinged release that aims to drain your marrow from the very get go as it stampedes forth without warning pushing your life to the brink. ” – Cadaver Garden

“One of Ottawa’s most promising death metal bands” – Ottawa Showbox

” A Scar For The Wicked will assault and infect anything that comes in contact with their aggressive, scathing melody with daring lyrical context, that is layered on pure attack force!” – Nataliez World

” Without a doubt and from the very beginning the duel vocalists make themselves stand out by implementing a solid mix of shrill highs and gutturals; hitting hard and quick, the two opposites occasionally find themselves entwined, as in “Silence Vile Temptress” and the spine tingling growl at the beginning of “Surrounded by Giants”. ” – Volume Sins (Review of The Necrobutcher 2014)

“Edmonton’s Protosequence perform an agile balancing act on the new song “Shepherd” we’re bringing you from their forthcoming EP, Biophagus, a high-wire performance that deftly straddles a stylistic divide without ever losing their path forward.” No Clean Singing

“In the vein of bands like All Shall Perish & Born of Osiris, Protosequence kick proceedings off with the furiously tech riffing of Parasitic, a wild & untamed slab of death metal. That is until a surprising tempo change that brings in some keyboards & more classic metal sounding guitar solo. It’s a damn strong start, one that leaves you wondering just what more Biophagous has to offer.” – Games, Braaaiiins And A Headbanging Life

“Protosequence is an act of quality over quantity.  I get seriously lost in their music, be it through a spine-damaging headbanging session (“DFL”) or stretch of melodic introspection (“Shepherd”).  Biophagous offers up another nice showcase of the band’s skill across a variety of substyles and paces.” – Metal Trenches

“Biophagus is of another caliber, every aspect of it is flawless, and will not only be in my playlist but should be in everyone else’s as well. Whatever you do, do not sleep on this band. Make sure you pick up Biophagus when it releases August 18th! ” – Blood Rock Media

“Incorporating elements from deathcore, technical death metal, and, yes, even djent, Protosequence manages to maintain the listener’s interest while developing an identity that is not only unique to Canada, but to the world. ” – It Djents

“Traversing between djent and technical progressive metal” – Somberlane

“You can compare Protosequence to as many modern metal bands as you want but they’re deserve being called more than “just another scene band”. “Schizophrene’ is more than solid and the new EP will be worth the wait on this showing. Cracking modern tech-death.” – This Noise Is Ours

“This EP is bursting with technical hooks and ripping solos that take more than a few cues from the technical death metal camp.  In fact, if we consider a spectrum between these genres, I would say that Schizophrene falls closer to groups like The Zenith Passage than Whitechapel.  Also, mad props for the seemless shifts between melodic and harsh riffs while maintaining aggression in the vocals.” – Metal Trenches (EP Review Schizophrene)

“Musically speaking, they share as much in common with Periphery as they do with Lost Soul. While there will be some who are turned off by the noise gates and the disparity of the chunky lows and the sharp highs, I think it’s one of the band’s biggest strengths. It represents the merging of two very technical subgenres and presents each of them in the context of the other. It’s kind of a hard thing to explain without listening; check out “Guardian” and follow it up with “Darkness Weeps” for the best illustration of this dichotomy.” – Toilet ov Hell (EP Review Schizophrene)

Protosequence was formed in the spring of 2014 by 5 guys who shared the same goal: create an array of songs that reflected each of them personally. As autumn approached that year, the band started to play in Edmonton, as well as Central and Southern Alberta. Releasing their debut 4 song EP “Schizophrene” in January of 2016, they quickly established a name for themselves in the Edmonton and area metal scene. Bassist Ryan Schaffler left the band in early 2017, with Jacob Teeple filling the vacancy seamlessly. After taking to the road, completing a 10 day tour of Western Canada in June, they hit the studio and released their sophomore 4 song EP “Biophagous” in August of 2017. 2018 saw Protosequence solidify and expand their following around Western Canada. Playing Armstrong and Metallion Festival, touring through BC, as well as sharing the stage with touring acts like The Faceless, Angelmaker, Ingested, Signs of the Swarm, Bodysnatcher, and others. In August, vocalist Joe McKee announced his retirement from Protosequence, with guitarist Kyle Hunter following suit a few weeks later. Protosequence quickly added Josh Hahn to the mix on vocals after seeing him perform with his previous band, Seraphic Nihilist. Shortly after Metallion Festival, the band convinced him to move from Prince George, BC, to the motherland: Edmonton, Alberta. With no luck finding a replacement guitarist, the band pressed on into writing mode.

About:

Edmonton’s own Protosequence offer a rush of groovy guitar parts met with story-filled lyrics and serene, landscape-sized instrumentals that roll like hills into a valley.

Protosequence is a reference to the original genome where all life began — much like the band, which existed in principle before they even had a presence. Each of the members were lying in wait to be activated and become the strain that is now Protosequence. Kyle Hunter (guitar) was constantly crafting near-complete songs that were ready to be realized. It did not take long for Kyle and Logan Vars (drums) to finally meet. It seemed as though there were two projects destined to combine into a singular effort to form the final line-up for the band: Logan (drums), Kyle (guitar), Parker (guitar), Joseph (vocals), and Ryan (ex-bassist). Members have a long history in the Edmonton music scene, playing in bands like Anubian and In The Midst Of A Murder since the early 2000s.

The band draws influence from acts like All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, and The Black Dahlia Murder. With a foothold on their influences, they root their music in technicality while layering emotional, yet gruff vocals weaved into every track. The band transitions seamlessly through djent riffs, grinding drums, and groove elements, making their sound versatile and ever-changing. Each live performance is crafted like an album played from front to back, with each song bearing a story and painting the room like a canvas — leaving the colours and experiences on each audience member.

The band is currently planning to release another EP as a follow up to their 2016 release ‘Schizophrene’ that will be announced early 2017. Check out their website for more details: www.protosequence.com

With a band name intentionally written with enclosed brackets to signify the trappings of modern life for all of us and how people, despite their best attempts to break out of the mold are still affixed to a simple controlled existence and futility.  Montreal five piece [EVERTRAPPED] are delivering relentless brutal melodic death metal in their third studio album ‘Under The Deep’ available now as ofOctober 16th via Hellstorm Recordz to follow 2012’s ‘Anomaly’ and 2010’s debut ‘Tales From The Supermax’.

Vocalist James Brookes comments on the album:

“‘Under The Deep is an exploration of the deepest reaches of human madness. Not clinical madness, but simply the darkest regions of the soul and the blackest part of the human heart from a mind found to be socially functional, but is really way too far gone. And thus it seeks to explore what is underneath the deepest depth, hence no matter how deep you descend there’s always another layer that can be torn away.”

10. Embrace The End (5:55)

Album Length: 53:3

Track by track explained by Evertrapped.

Tracks:

  1. […] intro
  1. Arise From The Ashes: A depiction of someone who has actually reached the bottom, so their rise from there so to speak. Like the king of their own universe broken by all clawing it’s back but fueled by an ever consuming hatred.
  1. Underneath The Deep: A personal look at how a person can only be fucked up by someone else for too long until they break. But this takes you to a point where you now can’t come back.
  1. Palace Of Injustice: A stab at anyone blinded by the indoctrination of any institution and their ultimate demise that likely follows due to their ignorance towards it. However, it does aim more at the disgust of the institutions themselves and not so much the ignorance of the people.
  1. Hypnotized By Hatred: Another personal reflection, but in this case more a person who has been made to believe that all they do is wrong. So it brings up the sense where if you tell someone enough times that they are shit, then eventually they will just believe it. And in this case someone who becomes a very dark god loathing individual because it takes them to a point where they think it’s hysterical.
  1. Blood Of The Fallen: This is set in a horror like context although it not some zombie tribute. It simply laughs at how we place so much importance on the memory of the dead yet never bat an eye at the reality of human suffering which we ourselves cause.
  1. Lethal District: Somewhat of a post apocalyptic view of the surviving factions of humanity that instill themselves as the powers that be, and thus cast out the unclean, unworthy, and so forth. And therefore it sheds light on the madness and revolt of the unwanted.
  1. Burning Through Vengeance: This is a straight up rebel song. A certain arrogant fuck you to a society that rejects you, but you still know that you know better than them. So instead you’ll bide your time and watch them hilariously screw themselves over.
  1. Reaper: As the title suggests, an end of the line type song. In a certain way captures the essence of[EVERTRAPPED] in terms of the inescapable event that is death.
  1. Embrace The End: This also goes more or less as the title suggests. This is another song for the apocalypse but more at the actual hour of the end itself. A look at almost coming to terms with the fact that it was likely the fault of humanity and embracing the acceptance of such evil.

The guitarists Frederick Dupuis (ex-Daggerfalls) and Vincent Benoit hammer out raw guitar while drummer Eric Lemire (ex-Apocalypsys, ex-Ice Castle) pummels the drums. Their versatile frontman James Brookes (ex-Ammonia, ex-One Final Moment, Continuum) easily alternates between strong clear vocals and low bellowing screams giving listeners the illusion of more than one vocalist. John Yates (ex-AraPacis) weaves together each song with his driving bass lines to keep the punishing tracks energy at an all time high.

Lyrics are intentionally slightly abstract to lure fans to draw their own conclusions despite a perceived understanding of the tracks. Themes for the music revolve around personal turmoil and even stringing together the image of a future where the world is on the brink of an apocalypse.

The band’s influences range from Death Metal to Melodic Death primarily, along with some classic thrash and speed metal, which explains their technicality and diversity sonically. Live, the band is a whirlwind of aggression and sonically abrasive, yet sporadically melodic vocally and instrumentally.

“those looking for melodic death metal on the heavier end of the spectrum need apply here. The second that you hear the opening chords of “Arise from the Ashes,” you’ll know exactly what [Evertrapped] is going for… a testament to some solid writing chops, particularly in the very traveled waters that the band is catering to. Those looking to sample a few tracks should check out the melodic leanings of “Lethal District” or ominous riffs of “Reaper.” – Dead Rhetoric

“After getting your socks blown off by the opener you only get a couple of seconds of rest before ‘Underneath the deep’ unleashes its fury at full force.” – Dutch Metal Maniac

“Listening to this one it feels like Lamb of God meets At The Gates or perhaps what I mean is this is what LoG would sound like as a melo-deth band. The musicianship is on par with any that you consider the best…Vocalist James Brookes has amazing pipes bouncing from cleans to death metal growls to slightly black metal screeches (not high pitched or I’d be OUT!)…Do yourself a favor and put this on your “To Buy” list, trust me you want this one!” – They Demons Be Scribblin
“[Evertrapped] excels at their craft with “Under the Deep” offering a full-fledged assault on the senses that is absolutelystone-cold BRUTAL! And between you and me friends such aggression and overt hostility is a welcome sight sound when all you want to do is check out of this crazy world for awhile and decompress!” – Heavy Metal Time Machine

“Tasty riffs and ditto drumming make this a great album to listen to…has everything what a good contemporary metal album should have and Evertrapped can look to the future with their heads held high and this album ‘Under The Deep’ will probably do well.” – Lords of Metal

Montreal-based five piece [EVERTRAPPED] has teamed up with OndesChocs.com for the exclusive album premiere of the band’s third album ‘Under The Deep’ (Hellstorm Recordz) due out on October 16th to follow 2012’s Anomaly and 2010’s debut Tales From The Supermax.

About:

Delivering relentless brutal melodic death metal since 2007, [EVERTRAPPED] intentionally wrote their band name with enclosed brackets to signify the trappings of modern life for all of us and how people, despite their best attempts to break out of the mold are still affixed to a simple controlled existence and futility.

Members of the band bring together their collective experience from the Montreal metal scene to create their heavy brand of death metal. The guitarists Frederick Dupuis (ex-Daggerfalls) and Vincent Benoit hammer out raw guitar while drummer Eric Lemire (ex-Apocalypsys, ex-Ice Castle) pummels the drums.
