“To Which I Bore Witness” is the second release from Canada’s post-metal duo They Grieve. Intended to be an introspective journey, it is meant to be depressing. The listener will be confronted with sad, loud music that’s not meant to cross into anger. The latest single is “Wither”, the album opener, which happened to be written twice. The band explains in detail:

“The decision to scrap the original version in its entirety was anxiety-inducing at first, but clearly feels like the right decision now that everything is said and done. We spent a lot of time fine-tuning the last half of the song, and the ending was one of our favourite parts to write—in fact, it is still one of our favourite parts to play live. Writing this song really forced us to get more comfortable with not only using samples in a live context, but also with blending and balancing tones and dynamics at the same time to ensure everything hits in the right place. Without our electronics, we would need 5 or 6 guitarists to pull this off on stage.”

The band’s first EP was written quickly out of excitement for their new project. At first, they didn’t quite know what the band would end up being. Since then they have honed their sound and that is reflected in this new offering, which listeners will find more refined and nuanced. They slowed down, got heavier, leaned more into their drone, minimalist, and doom influences, and steered away from the colder, noisier moments on the first EP. They also note that the production level is much better thanks to Topon Das (F*ck The Facts) at Apartment Two Studio along with mastering done by Dave Williams at Eight Floors Above and additional tracks recorded by Alex Jakimczuk at Uppercut Studios. The album artwork was done by Pascale Arpin.

They Grieve took a long time to fine-tune these songs. Several of them were completely finished and even performed live before they eventually re-wrote them from the ground up. They actively collaborate on each song leaning into their individual strengths.

Self-described as tense atmospheres and sad riffs, “To Which I Bore Witness” and the single “Wither” is recommended for fans of Bell Witch, Thou, and Year of No Light. The album is being released on February 24, 2023, via Silent Pendulum Records.

About: They Grieve is a two-piece doom, drone, and post-metal band based in Ottawa, Canada. Drawing influence from both minimalist ambient music and down-tempo metal, they blend warm synthesizers, electronics, and lofty guitar drones into mournful hymns and monolithic dirges with urgency, tension, and weight.

Members Gary Thibert and Deniz Güvenç formed They Grieve in 2015 with the intent to experiment with new forms and processes for songwriting, collaboration, and improvisation. Their first EP, I Made My Sacrifice Accordingly, was self-recorded and self-released in late 2016. In 2018, it was re-released with an added bonus track and accompanying music video through Transcending Records.

They Grieve are set to release their first full-length album entitled To Which I Bore Witness. Recorded at Apartment 2 with Topon Das of Fuck the Facts, this album presents a marked change in the band’s sound. Moving away from the harsh-noise influence on their first album, To Which I Bore Witness unveils a much more refined approach to texture and atmosphere while simultaneously shifting to a slower, heavier pace.

Employing a nuanced sense of harmony, the result is an emotional, dynamic, and doom-laden take on post-metal.

“In the song (To Which I Bore Witness) itself, the music lumbers like a wounded leviathan, staggering ahead with terrific heaviness through corrosive chords and pounding drums — and unexpectedly, it also gets significantly louder, all the better to crush the listener into submission. Enhancing the daunting atmosphere of the music, the vocals scar the senses with harsh howls of ruinous torment, and a guitar wails in bitter grief. Suddenly, just as the video’s protagonist lands on a barren beach (to meet her other self), the music dramatically changes. A slow piano melody ethereally rings in moody but mesmerizing fashion above a humming bass and steady beats. That interlude only seems to magnify the bruising impact of what follows it. The piano still rings, but the rough reverberations that surround it abrade like heavy-grit sandpaper, and the screams reach new heights of harrowing intensity. The drums boom, the chords scrape and moan, the feeling of immense desolation becomes staggering. The protagonist buries the box she removed from within forest roots and wanders away, alone.” – No Clean Singing

“As you can probably imagine from the song titles, They Grieve are not a happy band. The duo infuse a lifetime’s worth of depression and darkness into their music, drawing inspiration from acts like Grieve, Amarok and Burning Witch.” – Decibel Magazine (All That a Body Can Suffer off I Made My Sacrifice Accordingly)

“[…] a surprisingly nuanced take on sludge metal.” – Dreams of Consciousness

“Previously I had compared the music to an introspective journey. This feels more like sinking into quicksand.” – Metal Trenches (I Made My Sacrifice Accordingly)

0 Ottawa’s DEFORMATORY Premiere First Single Off Upcoming Album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon” Out September 3rd

Ottawa’s Deformatory Announce Sonically Relentless Death Metal Experience With “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon”

Single Premiere “In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign” via Bravewords

New Album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon” Out September 3, 2021

Deformatory has been a maelstrom of devastation since 2010, assaulting all in their wake with relentless sonic brutality. This year they are adding to their punishing catalogue with their third album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon”, which was mixed and mastered by Topon Das (Fuck the Facts) from Apartment 2 Recording along with the artwork done by Paul Gerrard, who is a movie concept designer known for his imagery on Wrath of the Titans, Hellraiser: Origins and Hellboy.

In anticipation of what is sure to be one of the heaviest tech death albums of the year, Deformatory are luring listeners in with the first single “In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign”, which can be heard via its premiere on Bravewords HERE.

This is the third full-length album for Deformatory, following the 2011 EP “A Prelude Of…”; the 2013 full-length “In The Wake of Pestilence” and the 2016 full-length “Malediction”. The nine-track album is divided into three chapters, of which “In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign” is the third song in the second chapter.

Deformatory explains the album’s concept and how the single fits in:

“In our previous album “Malediction”, we explored the truth about Lucifer, who was an angel possessed by a far greater evil entity named Savael. We dove into his awakening and consequences for mankind. Our newest album reveals that Savael was but a mere droid in a complex hierarchy of vile entities, known as The Ce’naxors from a planet called Cyru’xil, whose Grand Arkitekt has an insatiable thirst for destroying life stars.

The single is about the aftermath of planetary consumption and its effect on the multiverse. How death and destruction breed new forms of life, including some unintended consequences for Cyru’xil.”

This massively complex and intriguing album is just the tip of the iceberg for the brutal Ottawa duo. Fans of Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, and Origin should take note.

The album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon” will be released on September 3, 2021.

About:
Deformatory is a death metal band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Forming in 2010, they set out to create an extreme sound, fusing together classic influences (Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, etc.) and their love for modern tech death. The result is a uniquely relentless blend of death metal that can only hail from the Northern hemisphere.

Deformatory independently released their full-length debut, “In The Wake of Pestilence”, in December of 2013. This pummeling 9-track debut has been exceptionally well-received by fans worldwide, and has been cited as being an “outstanding and monstrous debut album. Essential.” (Frank Rini – AllAboutTheRock, ex: Internal Bleeding), and “flawless in every way” (TheBloodShed).

Having shared the stage with bands like Cryptopsy, Napalm Death, Obscura, Beyond Creation, Gorod, Archspire, and Fuck The Facts, Deformatory is more than comfortable delivering their crushing brand of extreme metal to live, screaming, and sweaty audiences.

The band’s sophomore release, “Malediction”, was released worldwide via CDN Records in 2016, with additional singles “Once Upon the Cross” (Deicide cover), and “Myiasis” both in 2018. Since then, DEFORMATORY has been developing their 3rd full-length album entitled “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon” which they plan to unveil in the Fall of 2021 as an independent release.

Canada’s Ischemic, purveyors of all things gloomy and dissonant are gearing up to release their second album, a self-titled full length that is set to be one of the most crushing albums of the year.

Before the record officially drops on Friday, April 2nd, the band has teamed up with CVLTNation for its exclusive full stream HERE.

The band adds:

“This recording is our most DIY endeavour yet, all production, engineering, and artwork were handled by the band and close friends, resulting in this stripped-down, but unrelenting collection of songs. This album was developed as a response to the more complex and melodic black metal sound on “Stagnation & Woe”. The tracks call back to the earliest days of the band, but with a decade of songwriting & touring experience under our belts.”

Crafted during Covid-19 lockdown, Ischemic‘s self-titled sophomore album is a listening experience that takes you on a trek through a haunted castle, where every corner is infested with isolation and creeping dread. Showcasing their dungeon-crawling doom and sludge riffs, the band has threaded charging death-metal assaults with dizzying black metal.

The intense, raw brutality of Ischemic is recommended for fans of Autopsy, Ahab, and Celtic Frost.

Due out on April 2, 2021 “Ischemic” is available for pre-order on Ischemic.bandcamp.com.

Track Listing:
1. Scabs (6:38)
2. Crawl out of Hell (11:38)
3. Illusion of Humanity (11:03)
4. Scattering Garden (22:21)
Album Length: 51:42

About:
Ischemic formed in 2012 through the unholy power of Kijiji, where both Isabelle Tazbir (vocals/lyrics) and Adam Korchok (guitar) were searching for fellow ghouls to play some sort of doomy, monolithic death metal. They linked up and began to pull together people from their respective friend groups to play in the band. It wasn’t long before the lineup was solidified and Ischemic could begin churning out filthy, crushing metal from the void.

Ischemic works collaboratively, riff skeletons are brought to the rest of the members, then cursed with flesh. This cohesiveness has resulted in 4 recordings:  “Frigid Descent” (2013); “All Paths Lead Nowhere” (2016); “Stagnation & Woe” (2018); and “Ischemic” (2021). The earlier records resonate with filthy, hellish, death/doom sounds that give way to experimentations in melodic black metal with “Stagnation & Woe”, and a revisit to the past in the most recent album.

The experienced musicians also lend their talents to other local acts; Tazbir has done time as a vocalist in the death metal bands Saprophyte, Serene Molestation, and Blastomycosis, and is currently in Experiment Specimen. Anthony Abbatangelo (bass) plays in the drone/psych band Qarafa and occasionally records and mixes projects for local bands. Mrudul Kamble (drums) fronts the progressive/death metal act Mors Verum and is working on launching a recording studio from his new home in Waterloo, ON.

The live show (post covid times) from Ischemic is both unsettling and energetic. What little light is permitted showcases disjointed, violent movements as Tazbir lures you into their tales of woe. They have shared the stage with the likes of Volur, Greber, Woe, Beyond Creation, and Iskra.

Ischemic’s new self-titled album is due out April 2, 2021.

Canada’s Ischemic, purveyors of all things gloomy and dissonant are gearing up to release their second album, a self-titled full length, that is set to be one of the most crushing albums of the year.

The single “Scabs” is the first glimpse into the physically crushing sonic experience of “Ischemic”, which contains five heavy doom tracks with veils of melodic destitution weaved throughout. At 6 minutes in length, “Scabs” is a very long single, but gives ample time to immerse yourself in the pure 80s death-metal filth contrasted with crushing, doomy choruses and crusty black-metal leads, with a classically face-melting solo from Adam Korchok at its center. Ischemic comments on the upcoming release:

“We expect the album to be a fan favourite. The production is the perfect balance of polish and rawness and seems like the best representation of our live sound so far. These songs developed as a response to the more complex and melodic black metal sound on “Stagnation & Woe”. The tracks call back to the earliest days of the band, but with a decade of songwriting & touring experience under our belts.”

Crafted during lockdown, the listening experience through “Ischemic” is a trek through a haunted castle, every corner infested with isolation and creeping dread. Dungeon-crawling doom and sludge riffs are threaded together with creaking, subterranean passages of guitar ambiance and noise. Charging death-metal assaults relent to spell-casts of dizzying black metal. Their most DIY endeavor yet, all production, engineering, and artwork was handled by the band and close friends, resulting in this stripped-down but unrelenting collection of songs.

Unleashing the latest slab of their patented “bastardized” grindcore with their new album “Pleine Noirceur” this past November, Fuck The Facts have a new music video for the track “Dropping Like Flies”. The song is a face-punching, fist-pumping smorgasbord of 90’s death metal, crust punk, and weirdness. Lyrically, the track was written by vocalist Mel Mongeon to tackle the reality of drug addiction and the opioid epidemic in certain parts of Canada pre-covid times.

“The infection is spreading
Like a field infested with insects, with pests that multiply
Unable to treat the infection, it’s becoming larger…

…We hear you say you’re concerned, that you understand
But nothing is done
State of emergency; where are the resources?
It’s all talk
Help isn’t on the way

Communities will remain under strain
Pushed to the breaking point
Everyone is scrambling to save lives
As long as you feel their lives do not matter, they will keep dying”

Fuck The Facts has once again teamed up with director David Hall, who has been making videos for each of their albums since the release of “Stigmata High-Five” back in 2006.

“His unique approach to making videos has always been inspiring to us and we’ve always given him carte blanche (just watch our video for “Everywhere Yet Nowhere”). For the “Dropping Like Flies” video Dave manages to give the viewer an uncomfortable and satirical look at the devastating opioid epidemic. Highlighting just how much this issue is not taken seriously enough.” says FTF’s Topon Das.

Director David Hall adds:

“The main inspiration for the video for “Dropping Like Flies” came directly from Mel’s lyrics. She eloquently sings about addiction as an epidemic and society’s response: “help isn’t on the way.” I wanted to present a vision of hopelessness, the brutal ravaging of addiction, the pervasiveness of prescription meds, the economic forces that conspire, and show some faces not commonly presented as addicts: white people, senior citizens, the middle and upper class. Addiction transcends all demographics. God sends flies to wounds he should heal. Pills rain down from heaven.”

The video for “Dropping Like Flies” can be viewed via its premiere on MetalSucks HERE.

Fuck The Facts has amassed a respectable discography over the years, and the new offering of “Pleine Noirceur” joins the 7 LPs and 6 EPs released to date. The considerable amount of time the band has been working together shows in the natural chemistry that courses through each of the 12 tracks. Fuck The Facts comments on the album:

“We took a long break before working on this album, I feel like it’s a collection of bits and pieces; old and new, short and long. It’s us working back into the groove, just in time for a pandemic. This album also could have easily been 3 EPs, you really have to listen to the whole thing in order to fully enjoy it. It opens the door for what is next.”

About:
Started as a recording project in the late ’90s, it wasn’t until 2001 that the work ethic that produced a slew of underground releases drove Fuck The Facts towards full band status and into the live arena. Since then, the Ottawa-based unit has barely stopped for a breath of reconsideration, associating themselves with some of the biggest labels in underground extreme music, as well as continuing a steady output of DIY releases. Having toured hundreds of thousands of kilometers throughout North America and Europe, guitarist/founder Topon Das, vocalist Mel Mongeon and drummer Mathieu Vilandré have performed as some of the biggest festivals and sweated it out in some of the smallest basements. From 2006-2011 Fuck the Facts released three albums via underground powerhouse label, Relapse Records. Upon the completion of their contract, the quintet decided it was time to put the finishing touches on the proverbial full-circle, returning to the world of fierce independence and creative control. Their most recent releases were produced entirely at their own studio, self-released, and shows Fuck The Facts efforts as an entity continuing to grow musically and personally while developing a deeper understanding of what significance their art holds to them. As one of the longest-running and most recognizable names in Canadian Grindcore, FUCK THE FACTS continue to deliver their brand of “Bastardized Grindcore” with no end in sight.

– 30 –

“The album opens with arguably the best Fuck the Facts song of all time in “Doubt, Fear, Neglect” — a song with some of the heaviest riffs ever made by the band… Fuck the Facts’s Pleine Noirceur is the most perfectly heavy record one could ask for. For a band that has been together for over 20 years, Fuck the Facts continue to make some of the most important heavy music around, and Pleine Noirceur is their finest achievement to date.” – Exclaim!

“It’s no secret I love the Canadian death/grinders in Fuck The Facts, and I couldn’t be happier to hear after 5 years of radio silence, they’re back and better than ever! Their new album, Pleine Noirceur, is set for release on November 20th via the band’s very own Noise Salvation label and today we’re premiering the title track off the release. It’s as vicious as it is warm and heartfelt, twisting and turning with new surprises while retaining the FTF brand we love over the years.” – Metal Injection

“Instrumentally, Pleine Noirceur is crushingly heavy but full of melody and atmosphere and unexpected twists and turns, and vocally, Melanie Mongeon is at her most emotive. These are soaring, impassioned songs that really make you feel something.” – Brooklyn Vegan

“The first thing that will strike you about Pleine Noirceur is just how fucking big it sounds; the production on this record is absolutely thunderous, boasting a crisp, punchy sound and one of the most rich, full-bodied guitar tones they’ve ever had.” – The Quietus

Saving the dreadful year of 2020 with the announcement of their new album “Pleine Noirceur”, fans are ready to riot the moshpit for the new Fuck The Facts release coming this November 20th via their very own label Noise Salvation. Five years after they unleashed their Juno nominated “Desire Will Rot”, Fuck The Facts continues right where they left off, offering up another slab of their patented “bastardized” grindcore full of all the twists and turns that fans have come to expect. In lead up to the charge, the trio is sharing their third rampage of face-punching, fist-pumping extremity with “Dropping Like Flies”. It’s a complimenting smorgasbord of 90’s death metal, crust punk, and overall FTF trademark weirdness.

To get your fix of new Fuck The Facts, head on over to CVLTNation for the single’s exclusive premiere HERE.

Fuck The Facts has amassed a respectable discography over the years, and this new offering joins the 7 LPs and 6 EPs released to date.

What started as a basement recording project in the late 90s has blossomed into one of the most prolific bands in the Canadian extreme underground scene. Fuck The Facts have always been more about making albums than just writing songs, using what’s left over for a separate EP, but this time around they decided to put the extra songs as bonus tracks on the different physical copies of the release, so the vinyl, CD and cassette versions will each have a different bonus track that’s not available on the digital release.

The unapologetic, experimental album probably needs a few listens in order to fully enjoy. Put on some noise-canceling headphones, choose your drug of choice, close your eyes, and enjoy.

Recommended for fans of Cephalic Carnage, Exhumed, and Morbid Angel, “Pleine Noirceur” will be available in several different formats on November 20, 2020.

“The band’s noisy riffs border on doom, with yelled vocals and a punchy rhythm section; fans of Melvins, Unsane and KEN mode will find plenty to love here.” – Decibel Magazine

“Montreal’s the Great Sabatini practice sludgy hardcore with tinges of noise rock, but most importantly do it with a ferocity rarely seen nowadays. Their approach is downright venomous, hitting the midpoint between Melvins’ Stoner Witch and Unsane’s Scattered, Smothered, & Covered — violent, calculating and downright disturbing. Goodbye Audio is the band’s latest offering, fans of the aforementioned as well as Helmet, KEN Mode, Today is the Day and others, pay attention, this record is for you.” – Revolver Mag

“Goodbye Audio is a heady album in all of the best ways possible, honouring the past while also elevating the genre in ways so unexpected and desperately needed.” – Exclaim!

“Four years on from their psyche ravaging third album, Dog Years, Canadian noise sludgers The Great Sabatini return with another maelstrom of noise bred dissonance which, to continue a trend set from their first releases, is their most irresistible trespass to date. Goodbye Audio is around thirty five minutes of sonic abrasion as unpredictable creatively it is expectantly striking; an invasion of raw and toxic noise intent on caustic seduction.” – The Ringmaster Review

“If you were impressed with The Great Sabatini’s 2014 ‘Dog Years’ LP then prepare to have your jaw kicked off your silly face, because ‘Goodbye Audio’ is even better. ” – Collective Zine

“The other half is a wall of incredibly weighty, borderline-doom metal wailing, contingent upon instrumental tones that constrict like pythons and don’t let go.” – Stereogum

“…hails from further out in left-field with more peaks and valleys than the heads-down-tits-up sludgy rock they fire at you from the stage…these dudes have a 90s alt-rock edge grinding against their love affair with riffs that crash bolts of lightning into stacks of Orange amps in delivering a rumbling calling card of hellacious noise.” – Decibel Magazine

“In 2012, the unpredictability and wickedness of Matterhorn and the gritty violence of the companion release The Royal We established the group as one to watch closely; Dog Years confirms that attention was well worth it.” – Exclaim! Magazine

“The Great Sabatini are not just playing by-the-numbers sludge, but rather mixing things up, and transposing their punk attitude into new forms of musical expression beyond what you might be expecting.” – The Sleeping Shaman

SHORT BIO:

Since forming in Montreal, Canada in late 2007, The Great Sabatini has released four EPs and four full length albums, and logged seemingly endless tour dates around North America and Europe. The music is an aggressive mixture of noise rock, doom, hardcore, and metal wrapped up in a burly sludge aesthetic.

The intrepid Sabatini’s; Sean (guitar/vocals), Joey (bass/vocals), Rob (guitar/vocals), and Steve (drums/vocals) got together with the intention of pursuing their musical dreams with similar goals: slow it down, tune it down, turn it up and keep screaming. With all four of them belting out the lyrics, they play loud, and with conviction.

The raw sound compliments the persistent theme of mortality that the new album centers on, with Sean concocted most of the lyrics for, but with heavy input from his band mates. Going forward, The Great Sabatini is less focused on complicating their parts and set on being direct along with working together and highlighting each other’s strengths.

LONG BIO:

The years of hard work have paid off and to date The Great Sabatini has released an extensive catalogue of recorded works: ‘Burning Wilderness’ EP (2008); ‘Sad Parade Of Yesterdays’ (2009); ‘Napoleon Sodomite’ EP (2011); ‘The Royal We’ EP (2011); ‘Matterhorn’ (2012); ‘Dog Years’ (2014); a split with Anthesis (2015); a split with Godstopper (2016); and ‘Goodbye Audio’ (2018). To amplify on this impressive discography they have also toured extensively across North America and Europe.

After working together for 11 years, the band has refined their heartfelt noisy sludge to perfection. Overcoming situations that prohibit them from getting together often, demos and samples are passed around amongst themselves until a final cohesive body of work is completed. Their upcoming album “Goodbye Audio” due out November 16th, 2018 is a prime example of the harmony and aptitude that can only come from over a decade of being together; it’s a more robust and evolved sound, but still maintaining the caustic energy they had when they started.

When asked about “Goodbye Audio”, they responded: ‘

“We’re trying to give people a raw-ass document of abrasive sludge and noise rock in the most hi-fi package possible. We’re not interested in polish or smoothing over any rough edges… just achieving something of high sonic quality that presents the band that we are today…”

The raw sound only compliments the persistent theme of mortality that the new album centers on, with Sean concocted most of the lyrics for, but with heavy input from his band mates. Going forward, The Great Sabatini is less focused on complicating their parts and set on being direct along with working together and highlighting each other’s strengths.

“Goodbye Audio” will be available on vinyl from No List Records, Ancient Temple Records and No Why Records. Cassette version will be available from Pink Lemonade and feature an exclusive bonus track “Drain The Swamp” only available on that format. Digital download available on TGS’ Bandcamp here.
