Vancouver’s KOSM recently plunged listeners into the dark universe of their Bloodborne inspired EP “Eyes On The Inside” unleashed on June 28th, 2019. The dark and agile record demonstrated KOSM‘s maturity in sound since releasing their 2018 Lovecraftian inspired debut album “Cosmonaut” and was the first release that featured all members of the band contributing to the writing process. In addition to the band’s original material, the progressive metal quintet enjoys creating cover videos of some of their favourite bands such as Gojira, Mastodon, Queens of The Stone Age, System of A Down, Halestorm, Plini and many more. Adding to the list of covers, the band is sharing their new video performing A PERFECT CIRCLE‘s famed track ‘3 Libras’ alongside friend James Holder of Vancouver gothic metalcore outfit 2 SHADOWS.

The band adds:

“We’re all big fans of APC and this cover turned out better than we were expecting – we try to keep things DIY and did this all ourselves! Due to time constraints between our current EP release we had to record and shoot this whenever there was time – always have to stay busy!”

Watch KOSM covering A PERFECT CIRCLE‘s ‘3 Libras’ on YouTube here.

KOSM latest EP “Eyes On The Inside” is available on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music.

EP stream here.

Lyric Video – ‘Yharnam’ here.

The band adds about writing the EP:

“We really set out to give people what they were asking of us, we all feel it’s going to be received incredibly well. On top of that, this is 100% for all the Bloodborne fans that trolled us into oblivion last year, so we hope that they love it just as much as the fans of progressive metal do! It’s heavier, trickier, and more concise with obvious nods to our biggest influences including Tool, Mastodon and Gojira.”

Show Dates:
Sept 6 – Edmonton, AB – Starlite Room
Sept 14 – Vancouver, BC – Pat’s Pub
Oct 31 – Vancouver – Rickshaw Theatre w/ Jinjer, The Browning, Sumo Cyco

Track Listing:
1. Yharnam (5:25)
2. Clocktower (5:12)
3. A Call Beyond (4:16)
4. Old Blood (6:58)
5. Eyes On The Inside (4:56)
EP Length: 26:49

Erik Leonhard – Guitar
Mike Slater – Guitar

Bio:
KOSM is a progressive metal band hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada. Combining influences from Mastodon, Tool, and Gojira; their sound is dynamic and unquestionably lethal. Since their induction in 2016, they have been making their mark in Vancouver’s metal scene as an absolute force to be reckoned with.

Familiar to members of the progressive metal covenant, and playing with themes from the H.P. Lovecraft and Bloodborne universes; KOSM is quite unique and authentically its own being. Their first release, 2018’s “Cosmonaut” was an album loosely based on the Lovecraftian myth of Cthulhu and each song was meant to walk the listener through a story from beginning to end. Following this, the band is now gearing up for the release of their latest release in 2019, “Eyes On The Inside”, an EP exclusively based on the Bloodborne video game.

“The technical abilities of all band members blew my head off. The flow and continuity of the music is maintained from the first to the last note despite all the challenging progressiveness. It’s got more creativity crammed in 5 songs than some bands put in their entire discography. And it kills swiftly with no mercy. For all you waiting on that new Tool album, make this EP your warm up.” 9.5/10 – The Metal Observer

“If you love your prog chunkier and sludgier KOSM is right up your ally.  They are definitely one of the genre’s best kept secrets and lets not make them a secret anymore, okay?”  – Technical Music Review

“KOSM’s knack for creating concept albums has paid off yet again!” – The Music Below

“I am immediately impressed. “Yharnam” is the first track, and I am already thinking Otep, Epica and iwrestledabearonce. The lyrics are impactful, the flow of the song fits and I want to listen to the rest already. Jessie Grace, vocalist, is showing her talent from the get-go. Having such a strong female lead is really a treasure, and I can’t fault the song. It’s definitely my favourite track off of the EP. The lyrics are dynamic and descriptive, and well executed. If you haven’t played Bloodborne, then this song will make you want to…I loved this EP! Everything worked and came together. It was refreshing, powerful and I believe the band will go far.” – Midlands Metalheads

“Vancouver’s KOSM kick the door in with Cosmonaut, their monstrous full-length debut. Brace yourself for a satisfying trip through an exciting mountain range of cascading, meaty riffs, swelling rises, and heady drops, all led by the powerful, soaring vocals of the dynamic Jessie Grace. ” – Beatroute BC

“KOSM cite Tool, Gojira, and Mastodon as three of their main influences, and all three can be heard loud and clear on their new album, Cosmonaut. The technical, progressive musicianship of Tool meets the crushing grooves and rhythmic vocals of Gojira, and Mastodon’s ear for riffy, thunderous prog are all present on Cosmonaut, which features some of the most technical metal I’ve heard this year outside of, you know, technical death metal. ” – Decibel Magazine

Prog-Sphere Premiere One-Man Prog Band SURFACE OF THE SUN’s New Single ‘Oblivion’

New EP “Panacea” Out Sept 6, 2019

Charmaine Schmaltz at Ingenz Creativity (https://photos.ingenz.ca)

Devon Eggers and his solo project SURFACE OF THE SUN have announced a new single ‘Oblivion’ taken from the upcoming album “Panacea”, which will be released on September 6, 2019.

Since his first recording in 2011. Eggers has worked hard to make a more polished, detailed, and refined second effort and the result, “Panacea” definitely brings that aspiration alive with more elaborate song arrangements that still have the SURFACE OF THE SUN feel.

The EP consists of four songs, each providing a unique element and feel to the release. They all have their own character, but are complementary to each other. Eggers outlines the details in the single ‘Oblivion’:

“’Oblivion’ starts with a unique bass guitar riff, which is one of the few songs primarily written on the instrument. It’s a little lighter than the others and builds through a series of verses and breakdowns supplemented with Asian instruments until bursting into the first chorus. ‘Oblivion’ also has an elaborate bridge section with energy that ebbs and flows, before ramping up into an explosive ending.”

All vocals and music are written, performed and recorded by Devon Eggers except for the drums, which were performed and composed by Chris Warunki (Omnisight).

Heavy, creative and catchy, SURFACE OF THE SUN is appealing for all fans of progressive metal, especially those with an interest in Tool, Karnivool, and Chevelle.

Bio:
Surface of the Sun is a one-man project spawned from the mind of Devon Eggers. Working on music over the years in the capacity of a recording engineer, he decided to complete a few of his musical ideas on his own. He manifests the subjects for the catchy and melodic songs, and then writes, performs and records all the instruments and vocals save for the drums. He does his own mixing but usually outsources the mastering and has two completed albums to date.Surface of the Sun is a listening experience that people can get lost in; it is dynamic with a rollercoaster of energy, melodies and heaviness. Each song stands out on its own while still complimenting the others.

Unrestricted by any other creative influence, Eggers can focus on his sole vision for progressive metal that he hopes will inspire others in some way, especially to think outside the box, to question, to be open, or to better themselves and others. While many of the lyrics may be aggressive and highlight an issue, Eggers usually writes in a way that focuses on correcting or improving whatever that problem may be.

In 2011, he released the debut full length ‘A Dying Star’ which is being followed up in 2019 with the EP ‘Panacea’ that will show further maturation and how Eggers has grown as an artist, writer, producer and engineer.

What is The Odyssey Experience?

The Journey
If you’re a music lover, albums have always been a journey. You may remember digesting your first progressive rock/metal album growing up – how these albums wove their way around every friendship, every breakup, every fight, every grade in school.

The Odyssey Experience enhances the journey of the classic album by taking you through the concept of the album, elevating the discussion between artist and listener.

The Quality
Are you tired of being herded around from iTunes to Spotify to Bandcamp? Do you have 8 different logins just to listen to the artists you like? Do you wish that artists would stop making things so scrambled and just let you listen YOUR way?

The Odyssey Experience will be delivered to you day by day through direct download and free stream. You can get these songs in 3 different formats including ultra-high quality WAV. Own it or stream it without logging in!

The Extras
5 songs, 5 videos, and 12 months of hard work and dedication by only 2 guys.

That’s what went into this EP. We thought it would be a shame to let that all go to waste. On the Odyssey Experience, you’ll have access to behind-the-scenes content, detailed explanations, bonus tracks, and limited VIP experiences that can’t be found anywhere else!

About the duo:

Grant, who plays guitar, bass and synth for the band started his music career 8 ½ years ago at the age of 12, sitting in his basement watching the movie Rock Prophecies. This movie was about legendary rock photographer Robert M. Knight, finding and transforming a young, unknown guitarist from a small town into a worldwide success. Inspired and motivated, Grant spent the next few years honing his guitar skills, writing music, and later learning the business side by attending college for business marketing. At age 20, Grant was invited into the Brotherhood of the Guitar, by founder Robert M. Knight, leading to endorsements with Ernie Ball Music Man and JH Audio.

While Grant was performing with another group at a local battle of the bands, he came across a mesmerizing singer by the name of Kenny Parry (vocalist, drummer and synth for Jupiter Hollow), who was almost performing as if he was possessed on stage, hitting notes that seemed impossible by any guy. Kenny Parry started music at the young age of 2 years old, setting up pots and pans like a drum set and banging away. This led to an obsession with music, and a discovery of his unique talent. In his teenage years, Kenny won himself the title “Best Drummer in Ontario” 3 years in a row. Around this time, Kenny started learning how to sing after being inspired by singers such as Maynard James Keenan, Mike Lessard, Dan Tompkins and Ian Kenny to name a few. Through years of strengthening his vocal abilities in choirs, bands and hours of dedication, Kenny has acquired an articulate vocal range, relentless endurance, and almost shocking performance through his uncontrollable stage presence.

Shortly after meeting, Grant and Kenny knew that their talents combined would create something truly unique, and Jupiter Hollow was born. Since then, the duo effortlessly created music in Kenny’s basement for months on end. The concept grew to be a two-man band, since Grant and Kenny wrote all of the music and wanted to keep it that way. The two musicians use technology to their advantage, allowing them to perform with a dominating stage presence, while captivating their audiences with their unique sonic journey.

“Without a doubt, Jupiter Hollow are elite musicians. Grant and Kenny know exactly how to captivate an audience with their music. This theory is proven through the artistic journey that is their record, Odyssey. Their music is tasteful. This is one of the few records that I have been able to sit down and listen to the entire record without skipping a single track. You might think progressive music isn’t for everyone but Jupiter Hollow, makes listening to a genre of music that can be classified as challenging to listen to, rather easy. Every song on Odyssey is an emotional journey, musically and lyrically. Let the music take you by the hand and embrace the emotion in its purest form. Listen to Jupiter Hollow. Now. There’s a reason why they’re being noticed. It’s because they love what they do and they’re good at it!” – Alex CrazyAce, Host/Executive Producer of ‘The Rush’ on VIBE105 FM – Interview can be heard here.

“Jupiter Hollow’s songs and performances on their upcoming record AHDOMN are BEASTS! It’s a true masterpiece. These 2 guys are taking the Prog world by storm.” – Jamie King, The Basement Recording (The Contortionist, Between the Buried & Me)

“The two gifted musicians ignite a real firework of creativity and that in just five songs. This masterpiece is refined by an extremely good sound. For anyone who has even a small drop of progressivity in their blood, it is a must to listen to this. The future of progressive rock / metal seems assured.” – Metalogy

“I went into this open minded but Jupiter Hollow truly shocked me with this EP. The guys have a refreshing sound, very different to what I usually listen to. Musically, it’s written really well and I can definitely tell that the duo are going places.” – Broken Arrow Magazine

“Jupiter Hollow have given the world five songs of progressive brilliance. For such a young duo hailing from Barrie, Ontario they pack a serious punch. They are great musicians and have crafted an amazing voice which touches on a range of progressive cliches but with a twist of more ambient music. Their music shows maturity beyond their age…” – The Independent Voice

“I’m very impressed by this EP on any level. Sounding, to my mind, like a cross between Rush, Zombi, and Mastodon, this is progressive metal as it should be. Grant MacKenzie and Kenny Parry, the two men that make up Jupiter Hollow, can be proud of this EP. It features strong playing, excellent song-writing, and above all, it is most uplifting, something we really need in this day and age. A band to look out for in the future.” – Hellbound

“New listeners can expect to go on a musical journey when hearing Jupiter Hollow.” – Barrie Advance

“Teen duo Jupiter Hollow deserve props for valuing virtuosity and going against the grain. Rock on!” – Power of Pop

“A young Canadian duo ready to bring fans of complex music a spacey, experimental and refreshing experience with their excellent debut EP, bursting with high-quality heaviness and progressiveness.” – The Headbanging Moose

“An adventurous duo that isn’t afraid to experiment with sound as well as influences, which range from Rush to A Perfect Circle to newer Leprous. ” – Lords of Metal

“What these two guys accomplish both live and on this five-track album is simply mind blowing. The fact that a duo can write and perform music of this quality at their age simply says the future for Jupiter Hollow could be stellar. Imagine the combination of Rush, Tool, Yes, with a live show that captures everything you could want to experience and see in a performance…I can honestly say that only a week into 2017, I have already pegged this as one of my faves of the year. To know that Odyssey will soon be followed by the full length album, Ahdomn has me salivating for more Jupiter Hollow.” – SkullsnBones

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 20, 2018

For fans of Tool, Mastodon, Truckfighters, Kyuss, Pink Floyd

Prog-Sphere Premiere: Canadian Cinematic Prog HARNESSING THE UNIVERSE New Video “Beyond The Bright”

Created By German Filmmaker Joerg Steineck

The Cambridge English Dictionary describes the universe as ‘the whole system of created things.’ Well… Saskatchewan’s HARNESSING THE UNIVERSE are a band more than capable of living up to the infinite possibilities of their name, harnessing the power of the universe to create music of great spirit and originality. As the great Stephen Hawking memorably said, “Always look up at the stars not down at your feet!”

Inspired by Black Mountain, Stoned Jesus and Brant Bjork, the band’s sound is best described as “powerful, interesting, serious, spacious and epic! Meditation Music For Metalheads!”

With plans for their follow up album “In The After” in 2018 to their 2015 self-titled debut, HARNESSING THE UNIVERSE are sharing with fans one more music video to close that chapter before they begin the next.

Pairing up with Prog-Sphere.com, HTU is premiering their latest video for “Beyond The Bright”. A beautiful cinematic video created by German filmmaker Joerg Steineck.

“We are trying to bring the listener on a ride with us…Longer song lengths allow for peaks and valleys in the soundscape and the change in feel from upbeat to chill and back again in the course of the same track…We want to take the listener on a musical journey of epic highs and lows. It’s not party music! It’s something you put on when you’re thinking about life and you need a soundtrack to back up your thoughts.” says drummer Travis Weibel.

“Impossibly young Canadian duo deliver quite a trip. When a prog band emerges with their debut EP and the two people in it are 18 and 21 respectively, you are more than entitled to feel old. When a prog duo emerges with as much talent as Jupiter Hollow you are entitled to feel excited about the future…A band this brimming with ideas will at some point in their careers deliver a masterpiece. This is an incredible start.” – Maximum Volume Music

“New listeners can expect to go on a musical journey when hearing Jupiter Hollow.” – Barrie Advance

“Teen duo Jupiter Hollow deserve props for valuing virtuosity and going against the grain. Rock on!” – Power of Pop

“An adventurous duo that isn’t afraid to experiment with sound as well as influences, which range from Rush to A Perfect Circle to newer Leprous. ” – Lords of Metal

“Jupiter Hollow consists of only two guys; there’s a Grant, and there’s a Kenny. They put all of the music together themselves, and it’s pretty spectacular if you ask me!” – Noah Campbell, Rock 95.7FM (Radio Host)
