NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – March 13, 2023

Surface Of The Sun’s Music Video “Vanguard” Is A Compelling and Progressive Ode To Growth

Surface Of The Sun is a progressive metal band hailing from Canada, it is the solo project of Devon Eggers who has been creating captivating and expansive soundscapes since 2011. SOTS has released three singles that are intertwined: “Oblivion” (off 2019 EP ‘Panacea’), and tracks “Dragon” and “Vanguard” (off 2020 EP ‘Dragon’), which all have corresponding music videos. “Vanguard” is the end of the cyclical process the singles are about – becoming a leader, passing on the strength found within, and allowing the process of growth to continue. Eggers explains in detail:

““Vanguard” is a longer, progressive soundscape that follows a unique arrangement that allows for interesting builds and dynamics between sections. The vocal arrangement is kept simpler to allow for more complexities within the Asian instruments that complement the heavy guitar tracks. I hope to share with fans something on a more personal level. The songs touch on internal struggles, but ultimately end on being able to overcome those struggles to become something bigger, better, and stronger.”

For Eggers, “Vanguard” was a song that he really resonated with once he started writing it. The song was based around the opening guitar riff and finding ways to make it grow and expand throughout the track. The feeling those first few riffs created in him left him attached to the song, and he spent a considerable amount of time experimenting with different arrangements to get the emotional journey right. With his music, he hopes to immerse listeners in a musical soundscape that is both catchy, but also something they can get lost in. The type of music one can close their eyes to, shut off all the lights, and just be carried away by the sounds and melodies.

Compared to the other two singles, “Vanguard” is meant to be more progressive, and contrasting, and a current example of the roots of Surface of the Sun. It is recommended for fans of A Perfect Circle, Chevelle, and Tool.

“Canadian artist Surface of The Sun released the EP “Dragon” back in the summer of 2020, and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. It is an atmospheric laden and groove oriented variety of the form we get here, with the two songs alternating between gentler atmospheric laden and harder edged landscapes, and frequently carefully developing the songs from one orientation to the next and back again rather than opting for abrupt changes or the use of transitional elements. Expressive but careful use of instrument details is a trademark feature of the former, often with one instrument sporting a more vibrant role in the arrangements, while the more groove oriented sections have a more defined hard progressive rock vibe to them and an orientation comparable to a band like Tool or Riverside. This latter aspect of the songs is also the most defining one, and due to that I’d suspect that many of those who find a band like Tool to be interesting also when this style of progressive rock is explored in a bit more of a mild mannered way should find this EP to be an interesting discovery.” – Progressor

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 7, 2023

Surface Of The Sun Reveals Music Video For Empowering, Progressive And Catchy Single “Dragon”

Canada’s Surface of the Sun is a solo project by Devon Eggers, with almost 100% of all things being created and done by him. Each of his recordings (1 full-length and 2 EPs) have been a massive undertaking, making Surface of the Sun one of the most “independent” and “solo” projects anyone will encounter. His latest release is a two-track EP entitled “Dragon”, featuring the title track and song “Vanguard”, which were written purposely to contrast. He explains the title track, which is available now in video form:

“I’m trying to give fans a taste of what Surface of the Sun is from both ends of the spectrum. Dragon being from something catchier, and Vanguard from something deeper and more progressive. Dragon was written to be on the fringe of what I would normally classify as a Surface of the Sun song. I had the radio in mind when I wrote this and tried to keep the song within boundaries that one typically needs for airplay, but still make sure it has the Surface of the Sun feel.”

“Dragon” is a catchy, yet heavy track, that is driven by a kick drum like a dance song would be. It even has, after the bridge, an EDM-like “drop” into the final chorus. It blends a dance-like feel into a prog-rock track. Thematically, it represents inner strength and was inspired after Eggers watched an episode of Game of Thrones. He’d been searching for something to represent that strength having already known how he wanted the lyrics to connect to the previous single, “Oblivion” (which peaked at #26 on Canadian Top 40 Radio Charts – Jan 2020) off the 2019 EP “Panacea”, Eggers hopes that with his music he can give listeners a musical soundscape that is both catchy, but is also something they can get lost in. The type of music one can close their eyes to, shut off all the lights, and just be carried away by the sounds and melodies.

Surface Of The Sun is recommended for fans of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Chevelle.

EPK – Surface of The Sun – Dragon (EP) (2020)

Publicist – Jon Asher – jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

For fans of Tool, A Perfect Circle, Chevelle

“Musically the two songs were meant to contrast. Dragon was written to be on the fringe of what I would normally classify as a Surface of the Sun song. I had radio in mind when I wrote this, and tried to keep the song within boundaries that one typically needs for radio, but still make sure it has the Surface of the Sun feel. Vanguard was meant to be more progressive, and contrasting, and a current example of the roots of Surface of the Sun.

Lyrically, Dragon and Vanguard are essentially part 2 and 3, after the lyrics of Oblivion. Oblivion is basically about overcoming the voice inside that might tell one they are not good enough; it’s about overcoming self doubt. Dragon is about, now having beaten that voice, finding that inner strength, the Dragon, to become what one is meant to or wants to be. Vanguard is about, now having become that thing, the dragon, becoming a leader who can inspire others to do the same. So, its cyclical. It’s a process of growth that repeats itself, spreading from one person to the next.” – Devon Egger – Surface The Sun

The EP as a whole and track by track:

Musically the two songs were meant to contrast.

Dragon was written to be on the fringe of what I would normally classify as a Surface of the Sun song. I had the radio in mind when I wrote this and tried to keep the song within boundaries that one typically needs for radio, but still make sure it has the Surface of the Sun feel. Vanguard was meant to be more progressive and contrasting, and a current example of the roots of Surface of the Sun.

Lyrically, Dragon and Vanguard are essentially parts 2 and 3, after the lyrics of Oblivion. Oblivion is basically about overcoming the voice inside that might tell one they are not good enough; it’s about overcoming self-doubt. Dragon is about, now having beaten that voice, finding that inner strength, the Dragon, to become what one is meant to or wants to be. Vanguard is about, now having become that thing, the dragon, becoming a leader who can inspire others to do the same. So, it’s cyclical. It’s a process of growth that repeats itself, spreading from one person to the next.

Musically:

Dragon: Dragon is a catchy, yet heavy track, that is driven by a kick drum like a dance (EDM) song would be. It even has, after the bridge, an EDM-like “drop” into the final chorus. It blends a dance-like feel into a prog-rock track.

Vanguard: Vanguard is a longer, progressive soundscape that follows a unique arrangement that allows for interesting builds and dynamics between sections. The vocal arrangement is kept simpler to allow for more complexities within the Asian instruments that complement the heavy guitar tracks.

Fun Facts – Story Angles

1. Surface of the Sun is a solo project by Devon Eggers, with almost 100% of all things being created and done by Devon Eggers. Each album is a massive undertaking that requires him to wear multiple hats, use multiple skillsets, have crazy patience, utilize thorough planning, and manage a project that normally requires several skilled people. He also does this while being 100% independent, with no finanical support or other support of any kind. Surfuce of the Sun is likely to be one of the most “independent” and “solo” projects anyone will encounter.

2. Oblivion, Surface of the Sun’s first hit single, was not written to or intended in any way to be a radio single. Yet, through an interesting combination of events, ended up reaching 26 on the Canadian Rock Radio TOP 40 chart.

3. Oblivion, released in 2019, captured the attention of Billboard, giving Devon Eggers and Surface of the Sun an artist spotlight.

4. Devon received a 4-page interview spread in Long & McQuades 2019 fall cataloge.

5. Devon Eggers also writes, performs, and releases music from multiple genres under his own name. These are entirely solo endeavours, just like Surface of the Sun. He is also a novelist, having written two books in a series that has received 5-star reviews on Amazon. Book 3 is in the works.

After moving to Vancouver, Canada, in 2002 to obtain an education in audio engineering, Devon Eggers worked as an in-house and freelance engineer in many of the major studios around the city. During this time, he focused on developing his skills as an engineer and producer, learning from studio regulars such as Garth Richardson (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chevelle, Rage Against the Machine), Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend Project), and Dave Genn (Matthew Good Band, 54-40).

During that time Devon also wrote original material with other musicians. Nothing serious ever developed, but he continued to write, finding his sound and voice as an artist. It wasn’t until around 2005, intrigued by the challenge, that he decided to pursue his music as a solo endeavour, which required moving beyond being just a guitar player. Devon focused on developing his skills with other instruments and singing and then wrote his debut album, A Dying Star. He performed all music and lyrics (except for drums), and after some significant life changes, completed recording and mixing the album in a very small town in northern British Columbia. In 2011 Devon chose the project name, Surface of the Sun, and A Dying Star was released.

Since then Devon released the EP, Panacea(2019), which had it’s single, Oblivion, peak at 26 on the Canadian radio Rock TOP 40 charts, and the single, Dragon (2020). From Oblivion’s success, Devon received an Artist Spotlight by Billboard in 2019, and a feature article by Long & McQuade in the Fall 2020 magazine.

Devon experimented with other genres releasing two EPs under a secondary solo project that will be re-released under his name in 2021. He also self-published his first novel, an action-packed thriller with a sci-fi twist called, Sky View (available as an e-book on Amazon and Kobo). He continues to develop his expertise as a safety professional specializing in improving workplace safety and culture and started acting in short films in 2020.

Devon also offers multiple music services including mixing, training, and production. Please feel free to send him a message on Facebook if you’re interested to learn more about these services.

Out Now! One-Man Prog Band SURFACE OF THE SUN’s New EP “Panacea”

Charmaine Schmaltz at Ingenz Creativity (https://photos.ingenz.ca)

Out now as of September 6th, Devon Eggers and his solo project SURFACE OF THE SUN has unveiled the new EP “Panacea”. The EP consists of four songs, each providing a unique element and feel to the sophomore release. All vocals and music were written, performed and recorded by Devon Eggers except for the drums, which were composed by Chris Warunki (Omnisight). Since his first recording in 2011, “A Dying Star”, Eggers has worked hard to make a more polished, detailed, and refined second effort with “Panacea”. The EP definitely brings that aspiration alive with more elaborate song arrangements with a SURFACE OF THE SUN sound. Eggers explains in further detail:

“The ‘Panacea’ EP was a major solo undertaking, so I’m very excited to finally be at the release date. I started writing most of these songs about 4-5 years ago, picking away at them here and there as ideas came and went. Then a little over a year ago, when I decided to go the route of releasing an EP, these four songs had come together in a way that felt right, and like they belonged together on the same release. So, in August 2018 I pushed the other songs aside for a bit so I could focus on these four.

From there on I spent every moment I could working on these songs. My evenings and weekends were spent in the studio recording, writing new parts, finding neat sound effects to add additional layers, completing the lyrics and vocal melodies. I spent countless hours molding the songs into the final versions over the coming months. Then, early this year (after some major equipment malfunctions that delayed me a month or two) I’d completed the bulk of the songs enough to record the drums, which are the only instrument I didn’t play on this EP.

My amazing drummer, Chris Warunki, and I spent the month of March sending videos and notes back and forth working out the drum parts until we were ready to hit the studio. We recorded the drums in Monarch Studios over a couple of very long days at the beginning of April. The next few weeks involved me compiling all the best drums takes and prepping the songs to be mixed. I then started mixing the songs near the end of May, and in June was fortunate enough to be squeezed into a very good mastering engineer’s schedule to complete the last step of the process.

So now, here I am, a year and about two weeks after deciding to finish these four songs, ready to finally share them with everyone. The process was long, was a lot of work, and tiring, but I loved every moment of it. And I love these songs. I hope others find enjoyment in them as well.”

Heavy, creative and catchy, SURFACE OF THE SUN is appealing for all fans of progressive metal, especially those with an interest in Tool, Karnivool, and Chevelle.

“Panacea” is available for stream and download on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, and all other major music platforms.

Bio:
Surface of the Sun is a one-man project spawned from the mind of Devon Eggers. Working on music over the years in the capacity of a recording engineer, he decided to complete a few of his musical ideas on his own. He manifests the subjects for the catchy and melodic songs, and then writes, performs and records all the instruments and vocals save for the drums. He does his own mixing but usually outsources the mastering and has two completed albums to date.Surface of the Sun is a listening experience that people can get lost in; it is dynamic with a rollercoaster of energy, melodies and heaviness. Each song stands out on its own while still complimenting the others.

Unrestricted by any other creative influence, Eggers can focus on his sole vision for progressive metal that he hopes will inspire others in some way, especially to think outside the box, to question, to be open, or to better themselves and others. While many of the lyrics may be aggressive and highlight an issue, Eggers usually writes in a way that focuses on correcting or improving whatever that problem may be.

In 2011, he released the debut full length ‘A Dying Star’ which is being followed up in 2019 with the EP ‘Panacea’ that will show further maturation and how Eggers has grown as an artist, writer, producer and engineer.

“Calling all fans of music in the vein of Tool (yes, we’re talking about alternative metal, art tock, progressive metal, progressive rock, and all of that juicy goodness); please allow us to introduce you to Mr. Devon Eggers, a recording engineer and independent, British Columbia, Canada-based musician whose one-man solo prog project is dubbed Surface of the Sun… Nothing at all quiet about this new single, “The Silence” is a six-minute and seventeen second-long lesson in modern, progressive metal that should find its way onto many new fans’ playlists. Clearly, we’re dealing with a talented dude here; with the exception of the drums, Eggers wrote, performed, recorded, and even mixed all of the music and vox heard on the new EP.” – PureGrainAudio

“If you’re looking for music that will envelop you with multitudes of thoughts, emotions, and moments common to the human experience, then you are going to want to get your hands on Panacea by Surface of the Sun.” – The Littlest Voice

“The Verdict: On some level, Surface Of The Sun excites me more than the new Tool album on the horizon. There’s a youthful excitement and energy to what Eggers is doing that I don’t think Maynard and co. can still conjure in this phase of their lives. It’s a hunger that just can’t be faked, and Panacea has that in spades.” – Metal Trenches

“Cet EP propose vingt-six minutes d’une musique puissante et hypnotique (‘Panacea’) qui alterne les ambiances, sur laquelle la guitare n’intervient qu’occasionnellement pour tisser des motifs autour d’ une section rythmique en béton armé qui assure l’essentiel de la musique, tout en proposant des mélodies entêtantes, à l’image de celle du premier titre ‘The Science Says’.” – Neo Prog
