Biography

Thundering in the distance of the Canadian prairies from the depths of Winnipeg hail four-piece ENTITY generating blasphemous death metal tainted with thrash. The four-year-old project grew out of a desire to generate terrifying metal complete with gratuitous solos and complimentary blast beats that whip each song into shape. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such acts as Skeletonwitch, Cryptopsy, and legendary Canadian metal act Razor.

Carl Brown (bass), Kyle Braun (drums), Adam Kozak (guitar/vocals), Tyler Augusto (guitar) are constantly pushing their writing abilities to create music that sounds like an army pacing through the muddy trenches of war and emerges victorious. Their influences are present in each song, and elements from old school thrash to new school technical death metal can be extracted throughout. Instrumentally, the guitar tone pierces through the blasting drums and is stitched together with doomy vocals. Each song is written to be a map through a tremendous journey with the band as the listener’s adept guide.

The band has produced a slew of demos and albums over the course of 4 years and is ready to release the height of their musical efforts, ‘Phobia Of The Formless’ [LP] in early 2017. Their songs are filled with torturous lyrics that pair well with their high energy stage performance. Catch them on tour Summer 2016 across Western Canada on their way to Armstrong Metal Fest.

Vivek Venkatesh and David Hall proudly present a unique celebration of film and music featuring key members of the Norwegian extreme metal music scene. The Norwegian Invasion will feature the Canadian premiere screening of the concert film Blekkmetal, and the Canadian premiere soundscape performance of Norwegian composer Ivar Bjørnson’s Bardspec project. The Blekkmetal screening is free to the public and will take place at 19h00 on July 3 at the VA114 cinema at Concordia University (1395 René-Lévesque Ouest) (Facebook event page). The Bardspec performance will take place at 20h00 on July 2 at Co-op Katacombes; tickets are $15 at the door or online at lepointdevente (Facebook event page).

Following on the heels of the highly successful world premiere in April 2016 in New York City, The Norwegian Invasion will see the Canadian premiere screening ofBlekkmetal – a documentary about the one-off 2015 festival celebrating the origins of Norwegian black metal. Featuring exclusive interviews and footage of Enslaved, Taake, Aeternus, Gehenna, Helheim, Old Funeral, Kampfar, Hades Almighty and Gaahls Wyrd performing classic and rare songs from their catalog, Blekkmetal features an all-Canadian production team including director David Hall (alumnus of Concordia University), metal studies scholars Vivek Venkatesh (Concordia University) and Jason Wallin (University of Alberta), and mobile media scholar Owen Chapman (Concordia University).
Producer Vivek Venkatesh sees the Blekkmetal film as “a stellar exemplar of how key members of the extreme metal scenes from Canada and Norway have worked collaboratively, provided a stark reimagination of a cultural artform, and revealed an acute focus on the music and visual arts associated with the Norwegian black metal scene in the early 1990s”. Director David Hall says, “I am really proud and eager to present the Blekkmetal documentary to our friends in Montreal – I truly believe we have managed to capture the essence of the Bergen Black Metal scene via interviews, concert footage and fly-on-the-wall guerrilla filmmaking. The fact that our friend and collaborator Ivar Bjørnson has agreed to perform his mythical ambient psych project Bardspec as a prelude to the screening is a dream come true for us!”

Blekkmetal is co-produced by the festival’s organizers Ivar Bjørnson, Jannicke Wiese-Hansen and Kirsti Rosseland. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers and festival organizers. The original trailer for the film can be viewed here, an extended trailer is now available here, while exclusive performance footage from select bands who performed at Blekkmetal can be found here: Enslaved, Taake.

Ivar Bjørnson (songwriter, founder and guitarist of Norway’s black metal pioneers Enslaved) describes his BardSpec, project as “Electronic Dark Ambient-Psych wherein the listener is invited into weird and wonderful soundscapes, and where deep minimalism meets cascades of psychedelic harmony and esoteric noise”. The music will be complemented by live manipulations of film co-created by David Hall and Bjørnson, with additional visuals by Vivek Venkatesh and Jason Wallin. Watch a video clip of the Bardspec demo here.

Canadian soundscape artist and media studies graduate scholar at Concordia University, Leticia Trandafir, who goes by the stage moniker of Softcoresoft, will perform a live set of ambient and drone music to open the Bardspec performance on July 2 at Katacombes.

Vancouver’s rugged outdoors-metallers, The Mountain Man, deliver a diverse blend of hard-hitting music, paying homage to the Sasquatch through crushing riffs and blaring drums. This band is all Canadian; celebrating camping, plaid, beer, and above all else energetic metal. Parker (ex-BRAUHEIST) gets straight to the point with his raw, gruff vocals and lyrics filled with animosity that cut through the instruments like an unyielding axe. Each song is like a hand-drawn map guiding fans through the British Columbian wilderness. While the first half is complete, the second half is up to the listener to build their own path and take what they will from each track.

The band developed their sound from listening to groups like The Black Dahlia Murder, Crowbar, Gojira, Lamb of God, and Black Sabbath, taking to heart the importance of dedicating their lives to their craft. Tevyn Pacey (Bass), Ryan McCreedy (Drums), Parker (Vocals), Tyson Tambellini (Rhythm Guitar), and Jordan Orr (Lead Guitar) are like woodsmen secluded from civilization with nothing but their instruments to craft doomy, yet frantic metal. They harness a variety of metal genres and bend them to their will.

The Mountain Man are releasing their debut EP Bloodlust on Friday, March 25, 2016. The five song EP is purposefully open ended so that listeners can interpret each song and find meaning for themselves. More information can be found at https://mountainmanmetal.bandcamp.com

Biography

From the rain-swept city of Vancouver come Wormwitch; the result of strain, both musically and mentally, becoming possessed by black metal instrumentals, rock and roll roots, and depressive lyrics. The black metal three-piece is the brainchild of former members of local hardcore act Dead Hand (2013-2015). Wormwitch is Colby Hink (guitar), Max Vüst (drums), and Robin Harris (bass & vocals). The songs are treated as unearthed bones, first they are arranged and named, then a story is developed based on the fractures and cuts, and finally the song is complete.

The band has been constantly swinging like a pendulum further and further right, as if the far left was classic punk rock and the right being blasphemous black metal. Wormwitch have been and will continue to become enveloped in European influences tinged with the slightest hint of rock and roll. The band consists of just three instruments, but somehow combines them all to create a catastrophous sound.

Each song is built to prey upon listeners as if taking in their energy and maintaining a deadly grip. The band’s goal is to engage the audience both instrumentally and emotionally as if to exhaust them. “The Long Defeat,” is the first EP discharged from the collective mind of Wormwitch. The band is currently drafting their sophomore release which has yet to be named. They are also releasing their rogue single titled “Coffin Birth” focusing on nature taking charge and sacrificing and renewing itself, all in an effort to destroy the blight of man.

Seattle’s RHINE has teamed up with PureGrainAudio.com for the premiere of their first single ‘Paralyzed’ off their upcoming album ‘An Outsider’ due out on February 5th, 2016.

The track can be heard at the following link: http://puregrainaudio.com/audio/rhine-paralyzed-exclusive-song-stream-premiere

Commented vocalist/guitarist Gabe Tachell about the song:

“The single “Paralyzed” by Rhine is all about tension and release. The theme is about personal experiences with sleep paralysis. This song gives people a well rounded Rhine experience, showing both the dissonant and heavy as well as the light and pretty side of the music. It’s a very dynamic song that features a completely improvised solo plus a clean section that turns from sweet sounding finger picking into rock ‘n roll then back into an epic metal ending with a monotonous slow outro that represents the idea of being stuck in paralysis.”

‘An Outsider’ is the follow up RHINE‘s 2011 debut ‘Duality’, which was first a solo effort by band founder Gabriel Tachell (guitar and vocals) whom is now joined by Alex Smolin on guitar (ex-Metameric), James Porter on bass (Ideofone), and Carlos Delgado (Inferion, ex-Death Crowned King) to collaborate on this project.

Track Listing of Album: RHINE – An Outsider
1. Dreaming of Death (11:46)
2. The Spell of Dark Water (6:20)
3. An Outsider (10:05)
4. Somewhere (3:59)
5. Paralyzed (10:50)
6. Dissolved in Fire (7:53)
7. P.R.E.Y. (5:31)
8. Into the Unknown (6:34)
9. Shipwrecked In Stasis (3:02)
10. Fragments (8:21)
About:
Seattle’s Rhine are seamlessly connecting German thrash metal with Swedish death metal much like their namesake, the Rhine River. The founder of the group Gabriel Tachell named it such for its simplicity and as a metaphor for fluidity and change. The band started in 2011 with the release of their first album ‘Duality’ which was at first a solo effort by Tachell (guitar and vocals) and eventually led to a full band. He is now joined by Alex Smolin on guitar (ex-Metameric), James Porter on bass (Ideofone), and Carlos Delgado (Inferion, ex-Death Crowned King) to collaborate on this project.
Rhine are primarily producing epic, progressive songs and yet others flow to the mouth of the river where there is a culmination of black, death, and thrash metal, occasionally tinged with classical, folk and other styles. The band has a certain frantic unpredictability in terms of songwriting and structure while the moody vocals gently ride over the extreme precision of the guitar, drum, and bass. The four-piece are experimental in their intentions, yet melodically and rhythmically catchy with the delivery. Tachell is the primary inspiration for the current material, referencing experiences in his life from emotional turmoil, health issues, fairy tales, to dreams of finding corpses floating in a swamp. Their interesting themes and energetic music has been evolving into a unique and distinctive sound.
Live, Rhine is an unbridled horse that emotes a nervous uncertainty of what is next compositionally and emotionally. The band bases their performance on the backbone of the band — guitar, vocals, bass, and drums, and they definitely don’t shy away from the challenges of playing music like this live without the help of backing tracks. Their latest release ‘An Outsider’ is slated for February 5, 2016 and while it may not be heavier than the previous release, it is certainly more advanced in terms of playing, songwriting, vocal performance and production. It includes tracks featuring german lyrics, completely improvised solos and an overall human-ness that is often lost amongst other high level metal productions in this age of quantizing and autotuning. Rhine are one band that has grown into a machine that is not to be missed.

RHINE Post Trailer For Upcoming Album ‘An Outsider’ Due Out Feb 5th, 2016

L-R – Gabe Tachell – Guitar/Vocals, James Porter – Bass, Carlos Delgado – Drums, Alex Smolin – Guitar – Photo Credit – Megan Treasure – MeganTreasure.com

Seattle’s RHINE are proud to announce their return in 2016 with their new album ‘An Outsider’ to follow up 2011’s debut ‘Duality’, which was first a solo effort by band founder Gabriel Tachell (guitar and vocals). Now joined by Alex Smolin on guitar (ex-Metameric), James Porter on bass (Ideofone), and Carlos Delgado (Inferion, ex-Death Crowned King) to collaborate on this project, the band has posted a trailer video to give a glimpse of what’s to come from the 10 track full length when it’s unleashed on February 5, 2016.

Band founder Gabriel Tachell comments on the release:

“‘An Outsider’ is about the struggle that comes with being different, it’s a love/hate situation. You want to shine but you’re afraid of it at the same time. You want to create trends, not follow them, but it’s scary to be the first one. It also has to do with social struggles and always feeling like a stranger. This theme is primarily represented by the title track. Many of the songs have different themes that are not all closely related. The album is all over the map emotionally. Not just angry and dark, but sometimes totally ironic or sometimes very deep and inspiring. It mixes in emotions you wouldn’t typically hear on a metal record like joy and nostalgia. The listening experience is a journey that won’t get you worn out on a single emotion, instead it is dynamic like we are as humans. We form strong bonds to the music we love because of all these things that it can convey, and we are attempting to create something people can feel the same way about.”
