Rimouski, Quebec’s Vortex, has their highly anticipated concept EP, “Alien Realms,” being unleashed on April 11th, and before it officially drops, they have teamed up with Decibel Magazine for its full stream premiere HERE.
“Alien Realms” is a four-track journey through cosmic horror and discovery that showcases the band at their most refined, combining massive orchestral elements with soaring epic melodies and relentless, aggressive riffing. Keeping with the style present in the previous two records, this orchestral blackened death tells a wicked tale of humanity venturing into space in search of intelligent life. The band comments on the record:
“This is a Blackened Death EP that blends massive orchestral elements, soaring epic melodies, and relentless, aggressive riffing. On this new EP, we doubled down on what worked best in our previous album, ‘The Future Remains in Oblivion.’ If you’re into massive orchestras and melodies blended with aggressive riffs and Blackened Death vocals, then ‘Alien Realms’ is for you.”
The EP features a carefully crafted sequence of tracks: “When Humans Defy the Void”, “Haunting the Abyss”, “Ripping The Threads Of Reality”, and “Where Wonders Dwell”. Each song serves as a chapter in the band’s exploration of humanity’s search for intelligent life among the stars.
The band approached this EP with a clear vision; the music and lyrics work together to build intensity and emotion as the story unfolds. It represents the next evolution in Vortex‘s sound, building upon the foundation laid by their previous releases while pushing into new territorial extremes. The EP seamlessly blends the band’s technical death metal roots with expanded orchestral elements and black metal influences, creating their most ambitious and fully realized work to date. It is recommended for fans of Fleshgod Apocalypse, Dimmu Borgir, and Cradle of Filth.

Vortex has released a haunting new music video for their latest single “Haunting the Abyss” directed by Chris Kells (The Agonist). The track is the second single from their upcoming EP “Alien Realms” scheduled for release on April 11th, 2025. This is the second single off this record and fans can hear both live when the band tours Eastern Canada in April and Europe in the fall, supporting France’s XAON. Vortex comments on the single:
“This song begins with a melancholic black metal section before transitioning into a verse that I’d describe as a modern death metal take on the main riff of Metal Church by the band of the same name. For this EP, we focused on writing memorable, epic choruses, and this one is a perfect example of that. This song showcases Vortex at its best. We put a lot of hard work into it, and we truly believe it’s the standout track on Alien Realms.”
The video, crafted by Kells’ visionary direction, perfectly captures the band’s blend of technical proficiency and atmospheric intensity. Through striking visuals and masterful cinematography, the video enhances the track’s exploration of cosmic horror and discovery.

Orchestral blackened death metal outfit Vortex has emerged from the void with their most ambitious release with their next concept record “Alien Realms”, set for release on April 11th, 2025, alongside the first single “When Humans Defy the Void”. With this release, they also announce eastern Canada tour dates with France’s XAON for April followed by European dates in October and November. They comment on the single:
“This song is a melodic assault, blending thrash-driven verses, hyper-melodic choruses, and an epic finale, all immersed in grand, sweeping orchestrations. Bold and daring, humans leave Earth in search of intelligent extraterrestrial life. This track is divided into three distinct sections: the thrashy, aggressive verses; the ultra-melodic choruses; and the glorious, epic ending.”
The band further explains that “Alien Realms” is a natural progression from their previous work. They’ve enhanced the orchestral elements while pushing deeper into blackened death metal territory. The EP explores humanity’s venture into space in search of intelligent life, though what they discover isn’t quite what they expected.

1. When Humans Defy The Void
This song is a melodic assault, blending thrash-driven verses, hyper-melodic choruses, and an epic finale, all immersed in grand, sweeping orchestrations. Bold and daring, humans leave Earth in search of intelligent extraterrestrial life. This track is divided into three distinct sections: the thrashy, aggressive verses; the ultra-melodic choruses; and the glorious, epic ending.
2. Haunting the Abyss
‘We traversed the void – Conquered the unknown – But found emptiness – In worlds, we’ve been shown’
This song begins with a melancholic black metal section before transitioning into a verse that I’d describe as a modern death metal take on the main riff of Metal Church by the band of the same name. For this EP, we focused on writing memorable, epic choruses, and this one is a perfect example of that.
3. Ripping the Threads of Reality
We ultimately discover that other intelligent life forms do exist, but they are not where or what we expected. Aliens emerge from other realms that challenge our understanding of physics and consciousness.
Musically, this track is the most blackened death piece of the EP. It’s what I imagine Behemoth or Belphegor would sound like if they had lots of orchestral elements.
4. Where Wonders Dwell
We wanted to close Alien Realms with an epic orchestral track, and this is the result. Once it was complete, we thought it would be even better with female vocals, so we wrote the lyrics and invited Giorgia to sing on it. The song is a departure from our usual style, reflecting the dawn of a new era for mankind.

1. You must watch the music video for ‘Haunting the Abyss’. There are a couple of scenes where band members are naked on a frozen lake in the snow…. We had to shoot those images bare-naked in January at -10C.
2. One time a girl stripped while moshing in front of the stage, some guy had to take her out of the venue on his shoulders to stop her.
3. None of us fits the ‘regular’ death metal band member stereotype. Many of us have children and we all have jobs most people wouldn’t think were for a death metal musician. We count two business directors, a wind farm manager, a construction project manager, and a music composer in our ranks. Two of the band members are schooled musicians.
4. We have played about 250 shows together until now.
5. We live in a remote area and often drive for 6, 8, 10, and even sometimes more to play a single live show, we are road warriors!!!
6. We are serious and professional, but occasionally some of us really like to party when the show is over. I would have great stories to tell but I’m not sure I should talk about that here…

In June 2023 Vortex released its third epic concept album set to aggressive and beautiful orchestral melodic death metal with hints of black metal. Each song in “The Future Remains In Oblivion” is one chapter in their well-written sci-fi tale and there is a build-up in intensity and emotion that goes along with the storyline and the lyrics as you traverse the album.
VORTEX is gearing up to release a music video and a new 5-song EP entitled ‘’Alien Realms’’ in April 2025. The band will hit the road alongside the talented band XAON, they will be supporting each other on a tour across Canada in April 2025 and Europe in November 2025.

Rimouski, Quebec’s Vortex announces they are pairing up with France’s XAON for an eastern Canadian tour this coming April followed by European dates in October and November.
Entitled “Symphony For The Dead Tour”, the Canadian edition of shows will kick off in Montreal, QC on April 15th and see both bands perform 10 dates across Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick with support on select shows from Omnivide, Strigampire, Ulfhednar, and Burning Attic (dates listed below).
The tour will also be in support of VORTEX‘s next release for 2025, a new 5-song EP to follow their third studio album “The Future Remains In Oblivion” released in 2023. That info will be revealed in the coming weeks.
