OUR DYING WORLD Put A Cinematic Spin On Melodic Death Metal With “The Egregious Sins Of Humanity”

Los Angeles’ Our Dying World is geared up to unleash a furious new single “The Egregious Sins Of Humanity”, which comes on the heels of two punishing records “Hymns Of Blinding Darkness” (2022) and “Expedition” (2019). Initially, they focused on the death and thrash metal subgenres but are now moving into the cinematic and symphonic realms. With this new offering, they are looking to give the audience a bridge between the fast and insane side of metal, to the clever and meticulously crafted end of the classical and orchestral spectrum. This new single is deadly fast, with drums clocking in at 225 BPM and the guitars falling in line culminating in a dark sound that will catch the ears of discerning metalheads everywhere. The band comments:

“The Egregious Sins Of Humanity” marks the next phase in the band’s development. The band all love dark, melodic death metal, and most of them enjoy the symphonic black metal that they’re slowly creeping towards. There’s a bit of thrash and deathcore in some of the riffs they create, but they love the moody, melodic, and symphonic elements that stay with some of the most dramatic styles in metal. About: Over the last few years, Los Angeles’s Our Dying World has gone through a tremendous evolution of sound from the thrashy death metal of their debut EP Expedition to the symphonic and melodic keyboard-oriented stylings of bands like Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, and Dimmu Borgir.

About The Track: The song opens up on a flurry of strings and a descending scale from an orchestra that makes a brief appearance before blast beats and double bass erupt across the listener’s ears. Choirs sing in a chant across the chaos before it all dies down as quickly as it came. Austin’s guitars pave the way for the verse to come in. David starts in with the lyrics, “I hear a voice; a whisper from the pits of darkness”, almost relaying a message sent from beyond. The drums slam the listener through the song as the orchestration becomes more and more apparent.

A deeper voice, almost as if it’s the whisper mention before suddenly comes out “I am nothing, I am all” called back by “I am shadows on your wall” almost telling the listener I am everything and I am nothing. The song dives back into the verse and we hear the full impact of the strings lifting the brutal guitars and drums into a new place.

The song takes a twist as something out of a Danny Elfman or Tim Burton film swings around. Sounding almost like a creepy xylophone and chimes, it’s almost as if you’re walking around blindly waiting for a big reveal in the song, and reveal it does.

The chorus comes swinging in with double bass, heavy chords, and low strings that match the lyrics, “Lost to the blackness I find myself in great demise; all hope is lost, no chance to be at one with life”. The subject of the lyrics has given up and we hear his solemn vow, “This endless void will soon find me, a lifeless corpse, who found salvation on a rope”.

Everything cuts out except a guitar, and it builds. We hear the subject utter his last words: “ And so it ends; this artificial claim of a blessed life. Sewn with seeds of failure and desperation, I take my leave with this note of abandonment”. And we hear a huge 808 drop.

Austin and Graham come in with a harmonized lead on keyboards and guitar, sweeping arpeggios across their instruments. Ray takes his solo next, a slightly different vibe to the song, but echoing eerily through his part with squeals and taps across the fretboard.

The band dives into the massive chorus a final time before the clean and calm guitars float out of the song with the sound of the wind at the bands back…

Fun Facts – Story Angles:

The drums on this song are Tom’s fastest drums to date – previously he had topped out at 215 BPM and this song would end up coming in at 225. Tom had to completely change his style of playing and relearn his double bass technique to make the speeds in this song happen consistently. Needless to say, it ended up being a permanent way of playing after he figured it out.

Everything was recorded by Alex Nasla in his house or with Dave Valez for drums. We were able to do everything in extremely controlled environments that eliminated the need for a full production studio. It was a fun experience and definitely got experimental at some points.

Austin’s first writing with Our Dying World turned out to be his guitars for Egregious Sins. Needless to say, the guitars have gotten much faster and darker since Hymns Of Blinding Darkness; a change that everyone was incredibly enthusiastic about. He’s already written another single that’s coming soon…

The high-pitched bell noise in the creepy section of Sins is actually a typewriter sample. Graham has been known to sneak cool effects into sections to make them a bit more subtly dramatic.

Our Dying World recently unleashed their new album “Hymns of Blinding Darkness” on June 24th. The record was forged during time off during the Covid pandemic. Initially, a band that was more in the vein of thrashy death, this new record embraces the melodic side of things and presents the band’s new form to the world. They explain further:

“It is an exceptional album of melody, personal experience, and the dedication of trying to push ourselves to our furthest limit. Lyrically, it speaks of many walks of life: sorrow, loss, hopelessness, but also empowerment, triumph, and solitude. There’s something for everyone to relate to in the wake of current times and cultural status. Musically, the record is attempting to stand out with its sophisticated arrangements, catchy hooks, and heavy melodies. It feels like a massive step up from where we were with Expedition and we think it’ll present itself as such.”

On July 9th, Our Dying World hosted their album release show in Santa Ana, CA and captured live shots along with behind the scenes-from the performance plus did a Q & A with band members to give fans more insight behind the band’s songwriting.

Drummer Tommy Tierney explains:

“The band wanted to do something special, showcasing clips of our live release show and we decided to put together a little getting-to-know-you video introducing the guys behind the sound. We wanted to give a little history, some personal details, and talk about what’s on the chopping block next for us. Hymns Of Blinding Darkness has put our hat in the metal ring and we wanted to make sure we gave ourselves the opportunity to talk about what brought the six members to this point that we’re at now.

We’d like to thank Andrew Goldfarb and Jamie Kaufman for shooting, recording, and editing such a stellar video and documentary for us, Gina Vertucci and Stages in Santa Ana, House Of Metal, Vera Leigh, and all the bands that shared the night of our release show with us; Consciously Dying, Anubis, Disrupted Euphoria, Hvile I Kaos, and Mythraeum.

To all the new friends and fans we’ve reached over the course of the last record, thank you for the overwhelming support and friendship you’ve shared with us since the release! We can’t wait for the next one!”

Hailing from Los Angeles, USA, Our Dying World has been hard at work over the pandemic forging a new path in the metal world. Initially, they were more in the vein of thrashy death and released their debut album in 2019, but now they have embraced the melodic side of things and present their new form to the world through “Hymns of Blinding Darkness”. For the band, music comes from the spirit and when the lyrics happen, they’re usually derived from a personal experience or feeling that is going on in their lives. Musically, symphonic and melodic death metal isn’t the only genre that inspires them, they also give prominent nods to blues through their leads and solos.

Our Dying World’s drummer Tom Tierney attended a small boarding school in New York state, which has gained notoriety after a disproportionate number of former students choose to end their lives, and the atrocities, torment, and abuse that took place at the school have come to light. These horrors have been channeled into the single “Survivor”, which is haunting and diverse.

The song starts with clips of a joyful choral arrangement of Tierney’s high school choir before now-deceased student Jon Martin Crawford echoes his testimony in the Supreme Court. This is followed by heavy and slow riffs, acoustic and clean vocal breaks, anguished howls, and desperate pleas of a boy who was once left in the woods at a school filled with cultists and now shoulders the pain of feeling like there’s something wrong that no one will ever understand. The band comments:

“Survivor was one of those songs that we threw into the single list to really bring diversity to the two standalones before we released the record. We want to give the listener both sides of the spectrum and then let your imagination take you to what you think you’ll hear next. Aside from it being a very deep and personal song, Tom thought it might be best that the song gets its own time to stand alone so that the alumni would get to see it more for how it was written as a personal feeling and effort to work through some major issues, and not just as another song on an album that’s lumped in with some metal songs. Tom put a lot of work into this and wanted certain people to know that it was not just another topic that went into a record; there are certain people we hope it brings some closure too about events that aren’t widely discussed.”

Throughout the song, the listener can hear the agony that Tierney conveys hearing that his fellow alumni are slowly dying off, and with everything he has in him he dedicates this song to them. Through the solos, the listener can almost feel the weeps and cries in his notes and bends.

“Survivor” is heavy, both musically and in melancholia. It is recommended listening for fans of Lamb Of God, Wintersun, and Children of Bodom.

“Veil Of The Reaper” is the final song on Our Dying World’s upcoming album “Hymns of Blinding Darkness”. The song starts immediately – pounding double bass and guitars flood the soundscape as the first verse comes in. Over the course of the track, vocalist David Ainsworth tells us of the process of dying complimented by beautiful leads, gang vocals, dueling solos, and melodies culminating in a catchy melodic chorus. This song touches on every element that makes a great melodic death metal song and goes on to add a rough and heavy breakdown, forsaking orchestration along with heavy and grueling riffs that are reminiscent of their first album “Expedition”. The band shares their thoughts on the new single:

“It was the song that pushed us all out of our wheelhouse and got us to a new level of being comfortable with the level of musicianship in the band. The solos and leads in the songs are easily the hardest we’ve ever pulled off as a group. When we heard where the leads and solos were taking us, we decided to give this song an all-or-nothing approach, so we threw everything we possibly could into it to showcase where we’re going with this new lineup and the levels of the players in it. We wanted to also show the difference of the last record, which was considerably more death metal oriented, to the melodic direction we’re taking.”

For Our Dying World, the atmosphere is extremely important to how their music is written, and Graham Southern, who handles keyboards and orchestration, is well versed in taking all the feelings and ideas from the band and making them socially accessible. This is especially important in “Veil Of The Reaper”, which touches on subjects of loss, missing loved ones, and inspiring figures.

The band calls their previous release ‘primitive’ in comparison to what is in front of them now. The addition of keys and orchestral elements has pushed them into a new and specific field of metal that to them, feels like the realm they were intended to be in. This new direction for the band will be a welcome one among metalheads who are interested in Nightwish, Lamb Of God, and Wintersun.

Los Angeles’ Our Dying World has gone through a huge evolution over the past couple of years as highlighted in the teaser for their upcoming album. On their 2019 album “Expedition” they were intense, thrashy death metal and with their next album “Hymns Of Blinding Darkness”, they are turning up the melody and stepping into a sound that is more refined and reigned in, but without sacrificing any of the intensity. This new album, like many others, is a product of the pandemic, and Our Dying World is itching to show listeners what they have been working on while tucked away as they comment:

“We are so happy and grateful to have this record finally come to light after the events of the last few years. The publications that have taken the time to listen to our efforts and share them with the world have been something we’ve all grown up on and to see “Hymns Of Blinding Darkness” being talked about so widely is mind-blowing. We’ve been working and developing this band for years and where we started seems almost like a different world. We’re starting to fall into our sound and as we start to push forward from here, you can bet you’re going to hear us captured more in a defined way.”

The dramatic shift in style can, in part, be chalked up to working more collaboratively as a band. When “Expedition” was written and recorded, it was all done by drummer Tom Tierney, as opposed to this upcoming release, which has been meticulously shaped by each member: vocalist David Ainsworth took his hand on writing lyrics for “Diary Of A War Dog” for the first time; keyboardist Graham Southern was responsible for multiple arrangements throughout the record and all of the orchestration, and guitarist Ray Sanchez helped shape Under The Hunter’s Blade from a single riff. It is clear the band is growing closer in composition and spirit so they are extraordinarily excited to see what comes next for them.

Complex melodies intertwining with intense intricacies, Our Dying World aims to give fans that feeling that we all once had when we heard a really amazing record. That sense of wonder, joy, excitement. It’s that feeling of putting a disc in your player and never taking it out. They are recommended for anyone with a penchant for melodic death metal, especially fans of Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, and Lamb Of God.

Story Angles – Fun Facts:

1. Survivor contains the only clean vocals that Tom has performed since his days at the school that the song is written about. When we began writing the song, there was talk about putting clean vocals in and we agreed that we should try to see how they turned out. What you hear in the beginning of the songs that sound like choir clips are of Tom’s high school choir and a trio he sang in his final months at the school. Up until this song, he has only been tracked with growls or screams.

2. Graham was found on a Facebook group randomly while searching for a drummer. The band had always been looking for a keyboard player but Graham showed up due to a postscript on the advertisment sarcastically asking for a keyboard player while they were “Asking about unicorns in the scene”. Graham showed up at the rehearsal room, warmed up with Mourning Palace by Dimmu Borgir and Angels Don’t Kill by Children Of Bodom, and instantly got the job.

3. Ray performed the solo for Post Mortem, our debut single, long before he was actually in the band. Years down the road, Tom and Ray ran into each other while moving a friend into his new home, and while catching up, Ray told Tom that he had some extra time on his hands due to a project breaking up. He’s been in the band ever since.

4. Diary Of A War Dog is based on true events as told by Tom’s uncle, Daniel J Tierney, an Air Force veteran of Vietnam. He’s published a book of his memories and experiences called Diary Of A Talking War Dog and after reading it, Tom and Dan decided that having those memories put into a listenable format might be a really great collaboration. Daniel resides in New York City and plans on visiting California with the family to visit his nephew and the band soon.

There’s something for everyone to relate to in the wake of current times and cultural status. Musically, the record is attempting to stand out with its sophisticated arrangements, catchy hooks, and heavy melodies. It feels like a massive step up from where we were with Expedition and we think it’ll present itself as such.

Track by track explained by the band (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

1. Ads Moriendi – Our intro track is the introduction of our maestro Graham Southern, who states his claim with some very dark and percussive orchestration dropping the listener into a hectic and almost frantically ominous tornado of strings and brass. There is a sense of urgency before throwing the listener into a triumphant wall of choirs announcing the return of a new and massive sound.

2. Everything We Know Is Gone – The opening keyboard and guitar melody have a strangely positive spin before vocalist David Ainsworth tears into a darkened riff with lyrics of the lies of a transcended being and lifestyle, once idolized, now known to be a fraud – deadly and unsatisfying. The chorus echoes with words of a past but current life, now lost in the knowledge of a newfound realization of truth. A ripping keyboard solo from Graham Southern follows up his ominous realization; everything we know is lost! The second verse tells of the darkened knowledge forming a reluctant but certain decision to turn the tide and strengthen the self to deal with the realities of this malignant situation to avoid any more pain. A breakdown followed but a sweeping solo from Ray Sanchez takes the grim mood and soars it to new heights. The third verse focuses on determinedly fixing the self before a strangely peaceful drop representing a breath before the final chorus; the subject has had his realization and is on the way to transformation. Ray and Graham take the song out with an incredible duet, only to foreshadow the rest of the record to come.

3. Under The Hunter’s Blade – The song starts with an almost folk-style string and bell set, giving the illusion of a mountainous and forest-like landscape before the guitars and drums come in with almost a tribal-esque beat. David tells the tale of a dethroned king of the mountain, now returning to his domain to reclaim his place. Ray and Graham interlude the song up to0 a beautiful segment to set the certainty of where the mood is going. The second verse introduces the prey of the hunter; his challenge to win his throne by the blood of the one who exiled him. The song then takes us down to a dark place where the hunter has his eyes locked on his adversary and the song devolves to blast beats and guttural vocals, representing the primitive essence of the kill; Ray’s shredding solo plays us through the moment of the death of his adversary and the realization of the king’s victory. The third verse describes the river of blood running from the neck wound to his hands and as the song reverts briefly to a calm instrumental, we can almost see the new king’s adrenaline fading, the majestic reclamation of his title, as the chorus once again hails his coming; he has returned to the mountain and has taken back his throne with a divine fire of life.

4. Survivor – The song starts with clips of a joyful choral arrangement of Tom’s high school choir before Jon Martin Crawford, who appeared before the New York Supreme Court in order to disclose child abuse from said school, echoes his final words of the testification. The song breaks into a heavy and slower riff clearly completely changing the mood. Tom tells the story of his younger self being left in the woods of upstate New York at a school filled with cultists. The song breaks down to an acoustic guitar, some clean singing, and strings and guitar. The song picks back up and David comes back in with his growls, conveying to the audience how lost and alone the young boy feels. He desperately prays to his deceased father to give him guidance. The second verse comes back to the clean singing and the lyrics portray the same boy, now released, back in the world feeling like there’s something wrong that no one will ever understand. The bridge switches to Tom’s screams, hearing that his fellow alumni are slowly dying off, and with everything he has in him, he dedicates this song to them. Ray’s solo comes in; the listener can almost feel the weeps and cries in his notes and bends. Tom says his final goodbyes to his fallen friends in the following section before David comes back in with desperation and emotion we haven’t yet heard in previous choruses before the song leads out on the notes it came in on.

5. Path Of The Nomad – The song comes in on a slightly quicker beat and is followed by choirs singing over the notes. Graham sweeps majestic strings over the guitars and drums as David describes a man traveling across the world; he is truly free from the world but at what cost? He has everything he owns in his hands, he is free from the trials of life but he has no family to warm him at night. We feel a natural and almost folk-metal style feel from the chord progressions before Graham comes in with a solo balancing his feel for melody and skill. The song takes a turn to a tremolo-picked riff that reminds us of something darker; never knowing the value of unity or knowing where you will sleep at night. The chorus picks up one last time, showcasing the beauty and sadness of life without tethering to worldly possessions and walking through life in solidarity.

6. Diary Of A War Dog – The band tells the musical story of Daniel J Tierney, an air force veteran of the Vietnam war, basing the song off of a book of his experiences, Diary Of A Talking War Dog. the song begins with a marching beat that sounds strangely ominous before dropping into a speedy thrash riff. David immediately screams of the horrors and trials of war, the consequences of the return, and the never-ending memories resulting. The chorus aggressively tells of the darkened mind space and the way the world looks after returning to life at home. The following guitar and keyboard lead carry us through the minefield of dark riffs and add some melody where previously there was little. David tells us of trying to bury the memories but with little success before the marching intro comes back in with more intensity. The song slows down, and Graham plays almost a peaceful piano segment, almost as a breath of fresh air after returning home…The final chorus brings us back to the place we always were and David reaffirms in the chorus that the memories of war and the subsequent feelings remained. The outro riffs are slower and feel reflective and thoughtful as they play us out; a heavy memory but scattered with the blight sounds of piano hovering above.

7. Valediction – Graham takes us into another world as his strings slowly build from a single violin to a whole section in what feels like a distant memory. A sudden 808 drop changes the tone to something a little more hesitant and fearful and the brass takes us to a darker and darker place until string and orchestral hits announce the final track on the record.

8. Veil Of The Reaper – The song starts immediately; pounding double bass and guitars flood the soundscape as the first verse comes in. David tells us of the process of dying. His eyes go dark, he’s pushed life too far and now he’s about to die. The breakdown signals the coming of the revelation with an almost alarm-like guitar lead. The second verse comes in with a layer of synths, telling of the silence that comes; the reaper stands before him reaching out his hand as if to say, “Come with me”. The pre-chorus comes in with a beautiful lead from Graham and we hear David tell the listener that the veil of death has been lifted. Gang vocals, almost referring to the voices are the dead, chant the lyrics with David as he realizes the anthem of all who pass from this life as the melodies of the chorus culminate in a catchy melodic chorus. Ray and Graham then show the insane skill and intensity of their musicianship with a unified and harmonized lead, that soon reverts to dueling solos; sweeps, arpeggios, and shredding showcase the uncompromising dedication of the two as they lead back into the chorus with a key change and a double chorus with the catchy melodies that make this song a staple of the album. The song leads out with a rough and heavy breakdown, forsaking orchestration and bringing back the heavy and grueling riffs that started Our Dying World in 2019.
