DEEP DARK RIVER, the acoustic doom, folk, blues, ambient and soul side project from Vesperia‘s Morgan Rider has posted a new video covering GHOST‘s “Square Hammer”.

Rider comments:

“This week I created a blues version of Ghost’s single ‘Square Hammer’. Enjoy the video! Be sure to subscribe to my channel! I upload new videos every week.”

Rider was inspired to create DEEP DARK RIVER by the works of his close friend David Gold (Woods of Ypres). DEEP DARK RIVER‘s self-titled debut album is currently being recorded and is planned for a 2018 release featuring all original tracks. BIO:

Born in Toronto in 1989, singer, songsmith and multi-instrumentalist, Morgan Rider had his earliest imaginings of life as a musician while contending with a tumultuous childhood at home.

Often overhearing his mother – who is a trained operatic soprano – rehearsing in the kitchen, his love of music and his understanding of it began to blossom at an early age. His mornings and evenings were soon spent banging away on an old Dominion upright piano – made in the town he now resides –  often to the displeasure of those around him.

Despite his ever changing family and residential climates, music remained an integral component to his maturity. In high school he would often skip class to sit in the woods to play guitar. It would also not be uncommon to see him braving a snowstorm with his guitar across his back to walk several kilometres to guitar lessons.

It is not hard to imagine that his main priority remained with music after high school, while most of his peers went on to office and factory jobs or the trades. As his freedom expanded, so too did his ambitions.

As Morgan cast his net further, he began to perform shows further distances away which began to create a small audience of peers and fans. He also began to book small shows and tours for local and out of town bands. It was not long before he was accommodating international artists.

With his expanding resources, knowledge and contacts, he began to tour his music domestically – often spending weeks or months in an old van – branching from coast to coast across Canada. In summer of 2011, Morgan was called upon by his longtime friend David Gold – who was the main songwriter and visionary of the band Woods of Ypres – to contribute his talents to Woods of Ypres for some live shows in the UK that winter. Being one of Morgan’s favourite bands, this was a sound decision for him. Unfortunately, it would not come to pass, as David died tragically months later.

Between 2012 and 2013, Morgan played his first international shows in the U.S.A. with SIG:AR:TYR and at Wacken Open Air in Germany with Crimson Shadows.

Since 2012, Morgan has performed, recorded and toured across North America, performing hundreds of gigs with a variety of heavy metal groups such as Vesperia, Crimson Shadows and SIG:AR:TYR. He also is the sole writer, engineer and visionary for his solo blues/ folk project, Deep Dark River.

PUREST OF PAIN (Featuring Members of DELAIN) Posts Guitar Playthrough “The Solipsist”

New Album “Solipsis” Out March 1, 2018

L-R – Frank van Leeuwen – Bass, J.D. Kaye - Vocals, Merel Bechtold – Guitars, Michael van Eck – Guitars, Joey de Boer – Drums

Dutch melodic death metal band PUREST OF PAIN guitarist Merel Bechtold has posted a new guitar playthrough for the band’s track “The Solipsist”, which appears on their debut album “Solipsis” out on March 1st, 2018 to follow their 2013 single “Momentum” and 2011 EP “Revelations In Obscurity”.

Check out the shredding at the following link: https://youtu.be/lJrnihMij0s

Lead by guitarist and main songwriter Merel Bechtold of DELAIN, whom also performs in much respected bands MaYaN and The Gentle Storm/Anneke van Giersbergen, the energetic quintet from Holland, which now includes DELAIN drummer Joey de Boer is a force to be reckoned with.

Check out their two fist singles combining Scandinavian metal influences with groove, ambiance, tone and melody.

“The Solipsist” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8L8ZplJBGc

“Terra Nil” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJFzvvYOdM8

Seven years in the making, from the writing process up to the final mastering to launching a successful online crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo (raising over 18,000 Euros, thank you video here), along with increasing their funds through live performances, which saw them open for such bands as Opeth, Textures, Suicide Silence, Unearth and Attack Attack! plus an unforgettable slot at Wacken in 2014. “Solipsis” is 14 tracks of brutality blended with groove and emotion produced by Merel Bechtold with recording done at Mantis Audio Studio (Delain) and mastering by Jens Jorgen (Opeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork).

Guitarist Merel Bechtold comments:

“‘Solipsis’ is a guitar oriented record, is has been recorded as organic as possible: partly at home, partly at Mantis Audio Studio. The song ‘E.M.D.R.’ is written by fellow guitarist Michael van Eck. All the other songs were summoned by myself. The lyrics are written by vocalist J.D. Kaye. And even though the music is at times technical and challenging, it’s undeniably driven by relentless groove, enhanced by hugely melodic passages, wonderful tone and moments of ambient clarity.”

“Solipsis” will be available on CD, Vinyl plus as a digital release and is available for pre-order here. Their single “Terra Nil” is available for download and stream on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, Deezer.

The CD and Vinyl versions have slightly altered artwork. Merel Bechtold was responsible for its concept and bass player Frank van Leeuwen designed and finalized the covers.

“There are few surprises here on Solipsis, it’s solid & enjoyable melodic metal that provides memorable enough heavy riffs, nasty throat-scratching vocals & a melodic tone that is ear-pleasing.” – Games, Braaains & A Head-Banging Life

“Apart from the album as a whole, “The Solipsist” is indeed a guitar-oriented song, but one that definitely drives with relentless groove, moving in and out of passages anchored by pneumatic, jackhammering riffs and pummeling drum rhythms. This turbocharged track is further enhanced by bouts of jabbing chords and rumbling drum fills, and by J.D. Kaye’s bestial growls and nerve-abrading shrieks. But the song is also home to catchy hooks and  swirling melody. It’s guaranteed to get your blood rushing.” – No Clean Singing

“Wisely focusing on groove and melody above all, Solipsis captivates the listener with a more unique vibe than one might initially expect. It’s distinctly heavy, but the enticing guitarwork broadens the album’s appeal to a wider net than the usual death metal crowd, and is sure to burrow its way into your ears more with each listen. Purest of Pain has crafted an all-around pleasing debut that oozes an even greater potential moving forward.” – Dead Rhetoric

“This is an a 14 track album full of nonstop heavy metal with clean and unclean vocals. The guitar work is absolutely outstanding. This album is a must for any fan of  European metal, in fact it is a must for all metal fans.” – Baby Dolls And Razor Blades

“a great ride and a great album to listen to. I highly recommend picking this album up and giving it a listen. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and find you have purchased one hell of a good album.” Cascadia Fusion Music News

“Deeply impressed by this band.” – Rock Portaal

BIO:

Mark Twain memorably wrote: “Everyone is a moon, and everyone has a dark side, which he never shows to anyone.” Well Italian Partycore/Electrocore/Metalcore band WE HAVE THE MOON have a Bright Side; which they are about to show to the whole world; throwing moonlight on the greatest parties seen in Italy since the time of the Romans!

Hail Caesar, we who about to Party salute you!

Inspired by Asking Alexandria, Enter Shikari, Eskimo Callboy, Crossfaith, and Bring Me The Horizon , WE HAVE THE MOON describe their unique sound as “sparkling, powerful, brave, passionate, genuine.”

Recently signed to Rockshots Records, they will release their aptly-titled concept album ‘Till The Morning Comes’ on February 23, 2018. Start the party countdown now!

WE HAVE THE MOON live for their band…and to party!

“The band is the strongest thing in our lives. We want to entertain and captivate, sharing our passion with as many people as possible…The moon represents the night, where our songs often take place. We own the night…We Have The Moon! Our lyrics are inspired by personal experiences, we think that having experienced in the first place certain situations is the best way to transmit them loud and clear…the concept is the party that takes place all night long!” says vocalist Makku.

Live, WE HAVE THE MOON promise…

“Energy, fun and engagement! We believe that these are the things that most distinguish our live shows, which we do coincidentally call parties! Those who know us can really see how much we change during the concert, compared to ‘behind the scenes’. The party lyrics are fully mirrored by the brilliant and catchy sound of our arrangements. Listening to our glittering sounds, anyone can imagine situations like those we describe in our songs. We expect our listeners to be reflected in the songs and what they describe, as well as them getting closer to the band’s feeling.”
(Bio written by Steve Earles)

“The album feels like one long ass party and is an ideal record for fans of Asking Alexandria and Enter Shikari. Listening to the album you just know the live shows are going to be killer. ” – Baby Dolls and Razor Blades

Vancouver progressive alternative metal KOSM have looked to the stars for inspiration, creating their own sound and story-telling mythos; a welcome break from the media-saturated negativity that threatens to overwhelm us; and like all good sci-fi / fantasy, KOSM’s songs reflect the world around us, they truly are 21st century sonic bards!

Inspired by Tool, Mastodon, The Agonist (Alissa White-Gluz era), Gojira and A Perfect Circle, KOSM have created a fan following both on their local scene and beyond, firstly with cover videos, and most recently with two singles “Ancient Heart” and “Space Mead”. The quintet is now revealing their debut music video for “Ancient Heart” with its premiere on Prog-Sphere.com. The single will appear on the band’s planned debut album entitled “Cosmonaut” slated for release later in 2018.

Drummer Sterling Paterson comments:

“We’re quite excited to debut our first music video for our single ‘Ancient Heart’. It’s a milestone for all of us because, while we’ve shot a few cover videos for YouTube, manifesting a picture to the lyrics that’s a bit more than just a bunch of dynamic shots of us playing our instruments, required a lot more thinking outside of the box. We had to work within the concept and theme of our upcoming album ‘Cosmonaut’, as well as the lyrical direction of the song itself, and taking into consideration we didn’t have much for budget, it was a lot of thinking on our feet to make something from nothing.

A lot of the credit goes to our vocalist Jessie for her creative direction and our photographer/videographer Lee Tebb for really helping us bring this video to life. It’s not like we had a few grand to throw around for special effects, professional grade audio/visual gear, etc; so working with what we had, we all couldn’t be happier.”

Watch “Ancient Heart” at this link: http://www.prog-sphere.com/specials/kosm-ancient-heart-video-premiere/

EPK – https://wp.me/pciNW-busAbout:
Our ancestors believed that our lives on Earth were reflected in the stars. ‘As Above, So Below’ was their wise wisdom, seeing the lights of the cosmic firmament as reflecting the lives of the people below. Moreover, they told tales, cloaked in mystical terms, but tales of the world around them, reflections through a glass darkly. Now, progressive metallers KOSM have looked to the stars for inspiration, creating their own sound and story-telling mythos; a welcome break from the media-saturated negativity that threatens to overwhelm us; and like all good SF/Fantasy, KOSM’s songs reflect the world around us, they truly are 21st century sonic bards!Inspired by Tool, Mastodon, The Agonist (Alissa White-Gluz era), Gojira and A Perfect Circle, drummer Sterling Paterson describes their sound as “female fronted progressive alternative metal.”

Creating interest on their local scene and fan following first with cover videos, along with two singles “Ancient Heart” and “Space Mead”, Sterling is stoked for fans to hear KOSM’s planned debut ‘Cosmonaut’ set for release in 2018.

“I think our upcoming album should be received well. The authenticity and sound of this band and how it has been received just blows us away. We want to tell a story that is inspired by our love of dark fantasy and H.P Lovecraft!”

Live, KOSM really do bring their audience to another dimension.

“Despite being a heavier band, people are coming to our gigs that don’t even listen to metal and are headbanging and having a riot! Both men and women come to our shows, it’s never a boy’s club. In one of our last gigs we were swamped with people wanting autographs on gig posters. We put on a show that’s akin to Tool and Mastodon. A good balance of heavy riffs and hooks crossed with hypnotic bridges and interludes whilst delivered over a series of different time signatures. People can expect to be taken on a journey where they’ll be thrashing around one moment and swaying to the music the next!”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 22, 2018

Brazilian Power Metal HIBRIA Announce New Guitarist Guga Munhoz

Brazilian power metallers HIBRIA announce guitarist Guga Munhoz as their newest member. After a successful audition, Munhoz received an official invitation to replace guitar player Renato Osorio. Munhoz’s entrance to the band not only marks the transition from two excellent guitar players, but also the beginning of a new and exciting age in HIBRIA’s career. Take a look at this introductory video to his shredding!

Video – Hibria Introduces Guga Munhoz – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC5JaW8bcBA

Guitarist Abel Camargo comments:

“I had already seen Guga playing many times on the city’s stages (Porto Alegre, Brazil), and there was something that always called my attention, and made me confident to choose him: The stage is really his home. Playing with friends, jamming with Paul Gilbert, playing classic songs, improvising on his videos, or even opening a concert for Dream Theater playing his own instrumental songs, he has always mastered what he wanted from his guitar and showed gratitude for that moment. Besides being a versatile and shredding guitarist, he is also a born composer.”

HIBRIA released their 2016 album “XX” and 2015 self-titled album on Test Your Metal Records.

Created by Andrew James of Edmonton, AB’s Eye of Horus and Shotgunner, his new project, one man folk metal band NORTH HAMMER is drawing inspiration from the mighty Quorthon; for Andrew is not so much a one-man band as a one-warrior metal machine. Andrew wrote and recorded the guitar, bass, vocals, and orchestration along with drums done by Doug Helcaraxë Nunez for NORTH HAMMER’s forthcoming debut album “Stormcaller” set for release on March 16th, 2018.

Andrew explains the significance of his band’s name.

“The ‘north’ part was a representation of the common theme winter that comes up in metal music, including folk metal. It is also a reference to my native Canada. ‘Hammer’ is a reference to Mjolnir, Thor’s Hammer!”

Inspired by Wintersun, Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, Aether Realm, Blind Guardian, “Stormcaller” is a 21st century continuation of the work of Norse bards with its melodic death metal folk riffs.

“The experience I’m trying to give the listeners is that of a fellow fan. I want people to be euphoric for other bands that mean something to them like Ensiferum, Wintersun and Amon Amarth. To connect personally with my music and realize that I love and worship these bands.” explains Andrew James.

Teaming up with PureGrainAudio.com, NORTH HAMMER is premiering their next track “Wanderer”, which can be heard at the following link: http://puregrainaudio.com/audio/edmonton-s-north-hammer-further-tease-stormcaller-album-with-wanderer-song-stream-exclusive-premiere

Andrew James comments:

“‘Wanderer’ is a song where he (a soldier in the ranks of a Viking faction as part of the story concept) takes to the high seas to seek his destiny. Although he had visions of clear depictions of places, he doesn’t really comprehend what his purpose is at this point. And thus, he lies awake endlessly trying to piece the puzzle together. Without a real steadfast idea of where he is going, he navigates by the star’s using his memories from the vision.”

While NORTH HAMMER is a studio project at the moment, Andrew James plans to put together a band of top-notch like-minded musicians for touring in Western Canada and beyond.

Album pre-order for NORTH HAMMER’s “Stormcaller” is available via Bandcamp here.

“The hard-charging melodic death metal of this song is itself heroic in its atmosphere, its darting, folk-influenced riffs, galloping rhythms, fiery soloing, and soaring keyboard melodies summoning mythic images of striving and triumph. While its musical antecedents are indeed clearly identifiable, it’s nonetheless a pulse-pounding, heart-swelling track, and one that proves to be very catchy as well.” – No Clean Singing

“Andrew James’ one-man project from Edmonton, North Hammer enters the heavy metal fray with the crushing debut “Stormcaller.” Especially for a first release, this album is intense, heavy and filled with high quality Ensiferum worship riffage. But North Hammer is not just a clone or a tribute, the sound of the band is clearly defined within the first few tracks and continues to develop and surprise throughout the album.” – CROM Metal

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 20, 2018

For fans of Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Blackmore’s Night

Rockshots Records Signs SHADYGROVE Featuring Members of Elvenking, Sound Storm, Evenoire

New Album “In The Heart of Scarlet Wood” Out April 6th

L-R:  Simone Morettin (Drums, Ethnic Percussions) | Fabio “Lethien” Polo (Violin) | Lisy Stefanoni (Vocals, flute)| Matteo Comar (Guitar) | Davide Papa (Bass) | Elena Crolle (Keyboards)

ROCKSHOTS RECORDS is proud to announce their latest signing of SHADYGROVE for the release of their debut album “In The Heart of Scarlet Wood”.

Featuring members from Elvenking,  Evenoire, and Sound Storm, Italy’s SHADYGROVE journey into our primordial and mythological past for inspiration. Like musical time travelers or aural archaeologists, they have trawled eras beyond most bands’ inspiration to create music from the soul…for the soul!

Theirs is an acoustic heaviness that is truly original and special. It’s as though, like the myths and legends that inspire them, SHADYGROVE have always been with us, in the Celtic Otherworld, just waiting for us to look with our hearts rather than our eyes. SHADYGROVE make music as fresh as tomorrow’s dawn.

Fans of Blackmore’s Night and Loreena McKennitt will find much to love on their debut album “In The Heart of Scarlet Wood”.

Violinist Fabio ‘Lethien’ Polo describes SHADYGROVE’s sound as “folk, ethnic, acoustic Celtic pop. We are trying to bring the popular music of our regions, mixed with Celtic and Medieval music, to a more modern view without altering its soul. We write very evocative songs to guide the listener on a journey to where nature still rules.”

Singer Lisy Stefanoni explains SHADYGROVE’s inspirations. “We love the different styles of folk music and the various approaches of the main musicians. We also love the Celtic music. In the metal genre, folk metal inspires us the most. We listen to bands like Eluveitie, In Extremo, also symphonic projects like Ayreon and The Gentle Storm. Those who love folk-metal will certainly appreciate our songs because we all come from that musical background. We take our fans on a journey to a place where myths are real and there is evidence of the magic forces of our planet. In this world the listener can meet legendary creatures walking into enchanted landscapes or see ancient rituals happening.”

“In The Heart of Scarlet Wood” is set for release via Rockshots Records on April 6th, 2018 and available for pre-order here.

1. Scarlet Wood (4:37)

While many metal bands find inspiration from supernatural sources, myths, and legends, WIDOW’S PEAK find influence from true life horror, from the depths of cruelty, terror and pain that man(un)kind so readily descends to.

WIDOW’S PEAK is an aural catalogue of carnage, a metallic mausoleum of pain, a sonic symphony of suffering. Their music does not reach for the stars, but rather for the cold void that surrounds them, the darkness that lives in the soul of man.

Make no mistake; WIDOW’S PEAK’s ferocity is the music of the spears, metal dripping with blood, bile and venom!

Formed in April of 2016, in Calgary AB, WIDOW’S PEAK have toured hard, their line-up has gelled, and are now on the cusp of releasing their debut six-track EP “Graceless”.

Inspired by Meshuggah, Black Dahlia Murder, Pathology, Beyond Creation, and Cannibal Corpse, WIDOW’S PEAK‘s is unleashing a teaser for their brutal, dirty, technical death metal on “Graceless”.

Check it out at the following link:

The band comments:

“We think fans will react to “Graceless” with a combination of shock, disgust, and adrenaline-pumping groove. Each song is very different from one another, and the EP is well rounded enough that fans of any type of extreme metal will find something they like. While the music is technical and the lyrics obscene, there is an underlying groove throughout that ensures the head-banging musicality is never lost.”

“Graceless” is due out April 27, 2018 with pre-order available on the Bandcamp here.

Track Listing:
1. Debt Collector (3:47)
2. CBT (3:47)

New EP Out “Biophagous”

Drawing influence from acts like All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, and The Black Dahlia Murder, PROTOSEQUENCE root their music in technicality while layering emotional, yet gruff vocals weaved into every track. The band transitions seamlessly through djent riffs, grinding drums and groove elements, making their sound versatile and ever-changing.  Their latest EP “Biophagous” was unleashed this past August to follow their 2016 debut “Schizophrene”.

Teaming up with Sick Drummer Magazine, PROTOSEQUENCE‘s drummer Logan Vars is showcasing his pounding force and technicality with a new playthrough for the band’s track “Shepherd”.

Vars comments:

“Shepherd is the most melodic and “pretty” song off our latest EP “Biophagous”. It’s also the most groove oriented. Starting out mellow, and coming to a climax near the end; I absolutely love playing this song. Probably the easiest Protosequence song as far as drums go. I use this as a warm up to get me started. It’s a nice low stress, high energy song to play along to. Once again, I’d like to thank Nick and Andrew from Nick Laird Videography, and Echo Tree Audio, respectively, for all their hard work on the video. I also want to thank my band mates Joe, Parker, Kyle, and Jacob for being such handsome gentlemen, Cara for being so amazing, and Sick Drummer for premiering this video.  This video is filmed in one take (2 cameras on tripods, and one handheld) with no sample replacing and no editing. Thanks for the support, go tell your dog that you love him/her. “

About:

Edmonton’s own Protosequence offer a rush of groovy guitar parts met with story-filled lyrics and serene, landscape-sized instrumentals that roll like hills into a valley.

Protosequence is a reference to the original genome where all life began — much like the band, which existed in principle before they even had a presence. Each of the members were lying in wait to be activated and become the strain that is now Protosequence. Kyle Hunter (guitar) was constantly crafting near-complete songs that were ready to be realized. It did not take long for Kyle and Logan Vars (drums) to finally meet. It seemed as though there were two projects destined to combine into a singular effort to form the final line-up for the band: Logan (drums), Kyle (guitar), Parker (guitar), Joseph McKee (vocals), and Ryan Schaffler (ex-bassist) who is now replaced by Jacob Teeple. Members have a long history in the Edmonton music scene, playing in bands like Anubian and In The Midst Of A Murder since the early 2000s.

The band draws influence from acts like All Shall Perish, August Burns Red, and The Black Dahlia Murder. With a foothold on their influences, they root their music in technicality while layering emotional, yet gruff vocals weaved into every track. The band transitions seamlessly through djent riffs, grinding drums, and groove elements, making their sound versatile and ever-changing. Each live performance is crafted like an album played from front to back, with each song bearing a story and painting the room like a canvas — leaving the colours and experiences on each audience member.

The band will be releasing their new EP “Biophagous” on August 18th, 2017 to follow their 2016 debut EP “Schizophrene”.

“Edmonton’s Protosequence perform an agile balancing act on the new song “Shepherd” we’re bringing you from their forthcoming EP, Biophagus, a high-wire performance that deftly straddles a stylistic divide without ever losing their path forward.” No Clean Singing

“In the vein of bands like All Shall Perish & Born of Osiris, Protosequence kick proceedings off with the furiously tech riffing of Parasitic, a wild & untamed slab of death metal. That is until a surprising tempo change that brings in some keyboards & more classic metal sounding guitar solo. It’s a damn strong start, one that leaves you wondering just what more Biophagous has to offer.” – Games, Braaaiiins And A Headbanging Life

“Protosequence is an act of quality over quantity.  I get seriously lost in their music, be it through a spine-damaging headbanging session (“DFL”) or stretch of melodic introspection (“Shepherd”).  Biophagous offers up another nice showcase of the band’s skill across a variety of substyles and paces.” – Metal Trenches

“Protosequence takes the insane melodic riffage of metalcore bands like August Burns Red or Novelists, and mixes them with tech death elements of bands like The Black Dahlia Murder which makes for what I think could be a band that has the potential to break through and make it huge…Biophagus is of another caliber, every aspect of it is flawless, and will not only be in my playlist but should be in everyone else’s as well. Whatever you do, do not sleep on this band. Make sure you pick up Biophagus when it releases August 18th! ” – Blood Rock Media

“Incorporating elements from deathcore, technical death metal, and, yes, even djent, Protosequence manages to maintain the listener’s interest while developing an identity that is not only unique to Canada, but to the world. ” – It Djents

“Traversing between djent and technical progressive metal” – Somberlane
