The band draws its name and lyrical themes from the mythological Czech creature which guitarist Jeremy Jackson explains further: “In Czech, Vodnik roughly translates to ‘of water’. I adopted the name for us because it is a widely celebrated mythological creature from my Czech heritage. Vodnik is gruesome, perfect for metal and what we want to do with it.” Vocalist Reinier Vandenbosch adds: “Lakes and rivers are its territory where it awaits to trap the souls of drowning victims. He is similar to the boogieman of the English-speaking world that also scares children. I try to write the lyrics largely from the perspective of the Vodnik creature.”

Along with embracing themes centered around the creature, Vodnik is also inspired by science fiction and horror, social and political commentary, dark philosophical ideas, and other mythological stories. Citing a wide variety of musical influences, Vodnik is a legit, no nonsense, heavy band that brings a ferocious energy to the stage.

The band’s first single “Our Dread, Our Joy” is off their their upcoming debut EP slated for later release in 2019 and will be available for stream plus download on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify and all other major online retailers.

SHORT BIO

Hailing from the Ottawa/Gatineau Capital Region of Ontario, the five members of Hatred Reigns compose original brutal music and have been taking the local scene by storm. Fusing both old school death metal and new school tech elements, each song they create is unique and full of beastly hammered drums, brutal aggressive guitars, sonic booming bass, and demonic vocals appealing to a diverse audience.

Looking to develop a new project with big ambitious goals to create a concept album Hatred Reigns was founded in 2015 by Jeff Calder, (guitarist, and conceptual artist). They performed their inaugural performance in 2017 to a sold out crowd and thus very high standards were established and word spread to promoters in other cities of their performance.

Their debut album “Realm: I – Affliction” is due out May 25, 2018.

Jeff explains the decision on the bands name:

“Hatred Reigns is self interpretive and encompasses the state of the world be it politics, human challenges, and over all Good vs Evil states that everyone can relate to. Determining a band name is a challenging thing to come to and as it happened I was listening to an album by the band Hate and was examining the artwork for Slayer’s Reign In Blood and it clicked.”

In the future months, they will begin recording their next release, with a goal of releasing a 13 song concept album recanting the travels of a damned soul to purgatory where their fate will be determined as they face numerous challenges. They will release their debut EP “Realm: I – Affliction” ion May 25, 2018 with 3 random songs in preview to their planned full length to be unleashed at yet to be determined date.

Hatred Reigns is:
Brandon Mayhew – Vocalist
Jeff Calder – Guitarist
Adam Semler – Guitarist & Vocalist
Kyle Hnatyshin – Bassist

KOSM – Cosmonaut (LP) (2018)

“KOSM delivers the goods while touching bases in the same ballpark as TOOL, MASTODON and PERIPHERY, (they’ve previously covered Mastodons “Blood and Thunder”) with an emphasis on plenty of space rock intermissions” – Powerplay Magazine

“Remember when Mastodon were special, circa Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye, before that vision was lost? […] Well, Kosm are like Mastodon in those days.” – Hellbound.ca

“KOSM does a solid job of mixing technicality, mood and groove. […] They’re a well versed band with all kinds of moods and changes engaging your ears every split second.” – Technical Music Review

“Vancouver’s KOSM kick the door in with Cosmonaut, their monstrous full-length debut. Brace yourself for a satisfying trip through an exciting mountain range of cascading, meaty riffs, swelling rises and heady drops, all led by the powerful, soaring vocals of the dynamic Jessie Grace. ” – Beatroute BC

“KOSM cite Tool, Gojira and Mastodon as three of their main influences, and all three can be heard loud and clear on their new album, Cosmonaut. The technical, progressive musicianship of Tool meets the crushing grooves and rhythmic vocals of Gojira, and Mastodon’s ear for riffy, thunderous prog are all present on Cosmonaut, which features some of the most technical metal I’ve heard this year outside of, you know, technical death metal. ” – Decibel Magazine

“Lovecraftian progressive metal is on the table for Kosm’s debut. While bands like Mastodon and Tool come to mind in the way that the guitars are maneuvering around, limiting the band in that manner downplays what they are trying to do. There are so many different textures and flavors along the way it is really hard to get a grasp on what best defines them. But that’s perfectly okay, and keeps Cosmonaut interesting for its 66-minute runtime. The concept to it all keeps it on the rails while exploring a variety of emotions and levels of heaviness (including some that aren’t so heavy). There’s loads of potential here for the band to experiment with in future offerings. ” – Dead Rhetoric

“KOSM definitely show enough potential with this release to be a band that should be on your scopes.” – Noizze UK

KOSM is a progressive metal band hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada. Combining influences from Mastodon, Tool and Gojira; their sound is dynamic and unquestionably lethal. Since their induction in 2016, they have been making their mark in Vancouver’s metal scene as an absolute force to be reckoned with.

The origin of the band starts with Mike Slater (guitars) and Erik Leonhard (guitars) as a casual project, and they were quickly joined by Jessie Grace (vocals), Sterling Paterson (drums) and Michael Mastracci (bass) for some jolly cooperation. Swiftly, like hunters, they took off from there and released two singles; including the well received “Ancient Heart” music video. Familiar to members of the progressive metal covenant, and playing with themes from the H.P. Lovecraft and Bloodborne universes; KOSM is quite unique and authentically its own being. Their next release “Cosmonaut” is an LP loosely based on the Lovecraftian myth of Cthulhu and each song is meant to walk the listener through a story from beginning to end.

With even more material in the world and future albums planned, KOSM summons you to join them on this journey full of experimental and progressive metal.

Metal means so much to so many cultures and has spread throughout the world, bringing unity and happiness rather than war and hatred.

The United Nations should make 2018 the official year of metal!

When metal meets a new culture it blends with it, creating a band special and original that we have never heard before. Such a band is the Mexican Folk Metal band Cabrakaan.

Formed in Toluca, Mexico in December 2012, Cabrakaan combine metal, orchestral elements and Mexican folkloric music, mixing such instruments as Jarocha harp, marimba and pre-Hispanic instruments like ocarinas, with lyrics in Spanish, English, Zapoteco and Nahuatl!

Cabrakaan are a truly unique band, one not just for their beloved and inspirational Mexico, but for the whole world, and the world will be hearing much more of them in the future.

As drummer and founder Marko Cipaktli says.

“We are proud of our roots and our culture and we want to share it with the world through our music.”

Inspired by Nightwish, Equilibrium, Amon Amarth, Wintersun, Eluveitie , Marko describes Cabrakaan’s music as “folk, melodic, epic, symphonic, death.”

Cabrakaan could not have a more metal name. “Cabrakaan is the name of a character in the Mayan sacred book known as Popol Vuh. He is the god of mountains and earthquakes.”

He feels that their forthcoming 2018 album “Cem Anahuac” will be an epic listening experience for fans.

“The album is inspired by the Mexican culture, its traditions and the issues we have as a society nowadays. It’s an expression of pride in our roots, our history and traditions, and our love for metal and music from our country.”

Live, Cabrakaan put on a show that is unique as their music.

“When we are on stage we try to give out fans a great experience by creating an atmosphere from the Aztecs’ time, using costumes and make-up!”
