Ancientthrones.bandcamp.com | Spotify | Apple Music | Amazon

“A full-throttle attack, the song (The Sight of Oblivion) delivers bludgeoning rhythms, vicious darting and slashing guitar-work, scorching blackened shrieks, and cold-hearted roars. There’s a brazen, borderline-unhinged quality to the barrage, generated by screaming, rapidly whirling leads, magma-like bass notes, and fast-changing, bone-cracking drums. But within the assault there are also fluid, sinuous melodic leads whose mellifluous, reverberating tones give the music a mysterious, mesmerizing, and mournful quality. And near the end one of those leads morphs into a fret-burning dual-guitar extravaganza that really gets the blood rushing.” – No Clean Singing

“Nearly an hour in length, The Veil earns that run-time with crisply-written compositions and an arsenal of sky-ripping riffs. The acoustic reprieve of “Sentient” and melodic grief of “Permanent” reveal the album’s heavy heart. But the album conjures strength from those pensive moments. Rife with nimble axe-work from Dylan Wallace and Nick Leslie, The Veil never succumbs to the solemnity of its subject. The Veil remains an impactful listen down to its final dying note.” – Decibel Magazine

“From the icy lands of Halifax, Nova Scotia lies one of Canada’s best-kept secrets: Ancient Thrones! …Fusing the intensity of traditional black metal with the modern stylings and production of death metal and tech death, “Divided/Dissolve” has a little bit of something for everyone. From the massive tremolo sections and bludgeoning riffs to the surprisingly melodic harmonies between guitarists Dylan Wallace and Nick Leslie, Ancient Thrones have definitely honed in on something special with this track.” – GearGods

“Canadian band Ancient Thrones perform a combination of black, death and thrash metal with some progressive tendencies on The Veil. They have similarities to Skeletonwitch, but have an even more dynamic sound. The songs are both aggressive and intelligent in equal measure and run through a variety of different emotional tangents. There is a vile and harsh aspect to the band, but there is also a forward thinking one. It all results in a creative and dynamic listen.” – Heavy Music Headquarters

“The prize for most ambitious album of 2020 already has the name of Ancient Thrones carved in marble. Who among you fancies a 56-minute blackened death metal saga with an epic meditation on one man’s descent into the afterlife? No band thought it conceivable to write the metal version of Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, but this Nova Scotia quartet are not just any band. This is a remarkable journey for the contemplative mind.” – Scream Blast Repeat

“a 57-minute descent into purgatory….” – Permafrost Today

“The Sight of Oblivion and The Millionth Grave are steeped in ferociousness and savagery as only a band well versed in blackened death metal are capable of producing.8.5/10” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“With this new incarnation, Ancient Thrones has moved into strict Black/Death territory, producing an album filled with pummeling riffs, intricate song structures, and technical musicianship that’s leavened by atmospheric segments and epic, sometimes audacious melodies that border on Cascadian. The production matches this style perfectly, being heavy and abrasive while allowing the songs enough room to stretch out… fans of more epic and melodic Black/Death will want to give The Veil a listen. 4/5” – The Metal Crypt

“It is fast, thrashing extreme metal with shrieked/growled vocals, and a headbanging attitude. They have elements of thrash, black and death but their method of delivery won’t confuse anyone. It is metal to make the fans move. It is pretty thrashy, pretty brutal but also melodic, and the guitar work has plenty to offer both in the riffs and the melodies.” – Metal Bulletin

“one of the most promising young bands in the region (Atlantic Canada) right now […] I already can’t wait for the next one. 4/5 stars” – Mettalworx Music Group

“Equally impressive is that no track feels as if it’s been bled of its passion and drive during the writing process; a genuine love of metal in all its forms shines through on each track, making the EP a wonderfully enjoyable 26 minutes.” – The Sound Not The Word (Review 2016 – Storming the Black Gate EP)

“This is some world-class metal, folks, get it, listen to it, and enjoy. And, as a side-note, ‘Storming the Black Gate’ easily stands out as one of the strongest New Brunswick metal releases of all time. Snatch up one of the physical copies before they sell out and the band is signed to Metal Blade or somebody who will do a mass-produced re-release Or find them on Bandcamp.” (Review 2016 – Storming the Black Gate EP)

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS

1. Started as Abysseral Throne in 2011, released 1 LP, and 1 EP on physical CD. Changed name to Ancient Thrones in January of 2018. This is the first release as Ancient Thrones.

2. The band name Ancient Thrones is an evolution of Abysseral Throne but it also comes from a lyric in the Wolves in the Throne Room song, “Astral Blood”, which is one of the band’s biggest inspirations and favourite black metal bands.

“The moon leads celestial legions, to cast the stars from their ancient thrones”.

3. Ancient Thrones lost their initial singer and guitar player right before they were supposed to open up for Beyond Creation. Having just moved to Halifax and not knowing too many guitar players they asked Dylan Wallace, a Halifax Local, who he might know that could fill in for us on guitar. He gave them a list of people but after none of those guys worked out Ancient Thrones went back to Dylan for more suggestions not even occurring to ask him due to how stupid good he is. He actually suggested he do it though and nearly flawlessly sight-read the band’s entire set the first time he saw the sheet music for their songs not even really having had heard them before. After that display, they knew they had their man and he’s been in the band ever since.

4. There have been 2 Matts on bass, 2 Nicks on guitar, and almost even 2 Seans in the span of Ancient Thrones’ time as a band. The only member in the band not professionally educated in music is Sean, who ironically taught himself to play drums.

5. Matt does all of the merchandise designs, album designs, band photography, pre-production, mixing, mastering, booking, and anything else under the sun. The band’s logo was designed by Mark Richards of Heavy Hand illustration who designed above all else the Revocation logo, another of the band’s big inspirations.

Ancient Thrones, formerly “Abysseral Throne”, is an Atlantic Canada acclaimed blackened metal outfit that rebranded to suit major changes in line-up and songwriting.

Formed in 2011 in New Brunswick and now residing in Halifax, NS, they quickly went to work to establish themselves among their scene and gained local notoriety eventually allowing them the opportunities to open for renowned metal acts from across the globe.

Sean Hickey (drums/vocals) is the sole original founder of Abysseral remaining, Matt LeBlanc joined in 2015 on bass and improved and refined the sound and operation drastically. Once they lost their original singer and guitar player Jonny Rains, Dylan Wallace joined and took over main songwriting duties. Hickey took over completely on vocals with a black/death metal vocal style, and Nick Leslie joined shortly after on the second guitar. Work began on writing a new album which took about 3 months to write the music for. The new material sparked the name change to Ancient Thrones as an homage to one of Hickey’s favorite bands and inspirations, Wolves in the Throne Room.

In 2013, the band released its debut record and its subsequent follow-up in 2016, “Storming The Black Gate”, which was nominated for an East Coast Music Award. Ancient Thrones have toured throughout Canada, and played at several festivals, sharing the stages with bands such as Silverstein, The Agonist, Black Crown Initiate, and Skull Fist.

2020 sees the release of the concept album “The Veil” showcasing the band’s desire for storytelling and pushing them to new heights musically. The new album explores the journey of a man faced with tragedy, his mortality and ultimately the permanence of our actions told through technical soundscapes and haunting atmosphere.

“The Veil” is due out November 6, 2020.

EPK – Uncle Woe – Phantomescence (2020)

Publicist – Jon Asher – asher[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

For fans of Yob, Chrome Ghost, Deftones, Slomatics, Tool

“Psychedelic, sludgy, doom-prog duo from Bancroft, ON. They do heavy things that go on for a bit.”

Album Title: Phantomescence
Release Date: October 23, 2020
Label: Packard Black Productions

Facebook.com/unclewoe | Instagram.com/unclewoedoom

Bandcamp | iTunes | Amazon | Spotify

“The lone member (although it does seem as if drummer Nicholas Wowk has been added to the band) Rain Fice has created a truly wondrous journey through pure doom lands into that astral, transcendental other place doom of the aforementioned Yob that gives you goosebumps with its completely distressing doom metal. Fice’s clean echo-drenched vocals are also of very high quality, while not actually sounding like Mike Scheidt, Fice does exude a similar aura of supreme enlightenment and complete mastery of his art.” – Verbal Aggression

“Never be afraid to take a chance on a new name. This one comes to us from Ontario and was released earlier in the month, though I’m just now getting around to hearing it. I was pretty damned impressed and count UNCLE WOE in the same company as Domkraft, Spaceslug, Chrome Ghost, and Slomatics. Some damned good doom with crunchy low end and transcendent vocals. Count it among the #HeavyBest19” – Doomed & Stoned

“Chugging, sprawling, and most of all reaching, the late-2019 debut LP, Our Unworn Limbs, from Ontario as-yet-solo-outfit Uncle Woe — composed, performed, and recorded by Rain Fice — is one of marked promise, taking elements of modern progressive and cosmic doom from the likes of YOB’s subtly angular riffing style and unfolding them across an emotionally resonant but still manageable 43-minute span.” – The Obelisk

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS
1. This album, Phantomescence, was conceived and recorded entirely during COVID lockdown and was recorded remotely, with Nicholas Wowk recording the drums in his garage, and Rain Fice wielding all other audio implements in his own humble abode. Once quarantine seemed like it wasn’t going to be a short-lived episode, the duo was faced with the reality of not being able to get together to rehearse in the foreseeable future, so they knew they had to do SOMETHING as a band in the interim. The obvious choice was to record an album. Aside from the initial fundamental structure of Become The Ghost, the rest of the album was written and arranged on the fly. Nick and Rain met up in a vacant parking lot in early April so Rain could pass Nick a box of sterilized microphones and an 8 channel mixer. Other than that, this album was created 100% remotely, sending audio files back and forth via the internet. The band has only been able to rehearse the album tracks only once together.

  2. Rain Fice and  Nicholas Wowk is something of a uniquely rural outfit, to their own detriment in a lot of ways. In an area where folk-rock, country, and classic rock cover bands abound, they are, to the best of their knowledge, if not the only heavy metal band for at least an hour in any direction, DEFINITELY the only Doom-centric, post-metal act for sure. On one hand, this has made fleshing out the band with local talent a distinct challenge, and when they DO have a gig-worthy band at the ready, they don’t have any contemporaries with which to share a local stage. On the other hand, this illustrates that they are serious about their craft, and aren’t in it for the glory of chasing the local scene… because there isn’t one. They ARE the local scene. They are currently hiring. Progged out doom bass players and/or guitarists apply within.

3. Rain Fice wouldn’t say that he’s a gear COLLECTOR, per se, but he’s definitely something of a gear aficionado, and he gravitates toward vintage and off-brand amps and pedals. All of Rain’s main amps are Canadian made, and one of them is a 30+ year old one of a kind thing. His pedal situation is similar. Most of them are pretty new, but he doesn’t have many common things on his board. No Muffs, or Tube Screamers. It was actually a leap of faith pedal purchase that ultimately spawned the Uncle Woe sound and led to writing the first official Uncle Woe song, Push the Blood Back in. After years and years of buying and selling pedals on the endless tone-quest, Fice plugged into a Kuro T120 and knew instantaneously that he had found his sound. That pedal, combined with his trusty Rozon amp is absolutely the backbone of Uncle Woe’s sonic signature.

About:

Hailing from the oft frozen hills of rural Canada, Uncle Woe is a phantom limb, wielding a bludgeoning tool against mostly true tales of bittersweet sorrow, revenge, and regret.

The bleak desolation of Bancroft, Ontario spawned Uncle Woe in 2019 when Rain Fice grew weary of floundering in non-committed projects and instead dove into songwriting mode with a rough idea of his ideal sound and started carving out what would become the first Uncle Woe LP “Our Unworn Limbs”.

After the album was released in 2019 and started to pick up some buzz, a full band began to form. However, the pandemic was not far off and the band whittled down to a 2 piece. Before lockdown began, Uncle Woe managed to lock down the rough elements of what would become the second album “Phantomescence”, Fice expanded on them, and after being fed to drummer Nicholas Wowk, and recording remotely, the album was complete: a meandering exploration of death and dreams. Many chugging, bludgeoning passages are offset by expansive and contemplative, subdued, almost post-rock soundscapes.

As Uncle Woe begins to hit their stride, fans can look forward to the band putting out music pretty much indefinitely, plans are in motion for a third album already.

The band’s second album “Phantomescence” will be available digitally, CD and on vinyl on October 23rd via Packard Black Productions.

EPK – Handsome Pants – Rut (single) (2020)

Facebook.com/Handsomepants4 |Instagram.com/handsomepants4 | Twitter.com/PantsHandsome | YouTube

Bandcamp | Spotify | Apple Music

Handsome Pants is the kind of band that shows up to a gig dressed haphazardly in mismatched Value Village clothes they picked out for each other. The kind of band that doesn’t take themselves seriously just wants to rock out and have a good time with their fans. Handsome Pants proves fun does not be sacrificed to make lively, highly creative music.

Loud and obnoxious is the name of the game for Handsome Pants and the rambunctious uniqueness really shines through with their new single, “Rut” which follows a concept that a lot of people are familiar with. The feeling of being stuck in a rut and turning to alcohol. The band explains the single in more depth:

“Rut is the second release in our early existence as a band. This song is something Andrew has been sitting on for a long time and rewriting lyrics. Finally finding the right content and lyrics putting it together at this time seems perfect. It seems to relate to a lot of people right now and what they are going through with the pandemic and everything else happening right now.”

The most mainstream track the band has to date still holds on to its originality with the layered vocals and prominent harmonica.

“Rut” is suitable for all kinds of rock radio, it’s punchy and tight, for fans of Royal Blood, Highly Suspect, and Clutch, Handsome Pants is just getting started and anticipates more music coming down the pipe.

Emerging from the remnant of another band, Jordan Nodwell (bass), Kyle Nodwell (drums), and Andrew Bateman (guitar/vocals), created Handsome Pants to get the fulfillment they missed. Looking to add something a little extra, they found Chuck Smith who rocks the harmonica, bringing with him a unique and different element that is layered with effect and not the conventional lyric or style.

Bateman has historically written the majority of ideas for songs and of late Smith and Nodwell have come up with song good song ideas. Once the idea is brought to the table the rest of the band throws in ideas and parts that make the song better and sometimes an unseen turn around on the song for the better.

Loud, and obnoxious, Handsome Pants is the kind of band that plays a gig clad in loud thrift store clothes they picked out for each other. Fun, lively and no pretentious attitudes is half of the Handsome Pants formula, the other being unique, punchy, and tight music for listeners of all kinds.

Handsome Pants is currently not focused on completing an album, just making good music on their time, song by song.

Comprised of like-minded individuals from different aspects of the local music scene, Noah (bass), Eitan (guitars/vocals/synths), Isaac (drums/percussion), and Kurtis (keyboards/synths), Ontario’s Wither Within formed with a love of horror culture, heavy music, and a thirst to do something different, and memorable.

Established in July of 2020, they won the July 2020 Metal/Core Songwriting Contest (sponsored by Double Impact Drums) with their unique combination of metal, pop, and hip hop music. Many of their song ideas come about with Eitan writing and recording an instrumental track and sending it to the rest of the band members. Everyone then adds in their ideas and builds off of it.

Noah tracks his bass, Kurtis adds synth parts and layers existing parts, and Isaac adds drum fills and transitions to the MIDI track. In the end, Eitan puts it all together, mixes and masters, and voila, we got music!

To date Wither Within has released the single/video “Maggot Juice” with more music on the way.

““Separation From Classification” proves to be a mix of moods and sensations, as well as stylistic accents. Through dragging chords, a lumbering gait, and wailing notes it manifests gloom and despair. A ringing riff creates a sense of coiling tension and encroaching menace. Swirling leads dose the mind with feelings of eeriness and dread. It erupts in bouts of jackhammering brutishness and drops low-end detonations. And about three minutes in, the band create a stark juxtaposition, beginning with a moody yet enthralling guitar solo and then exploding in an assault of pulverizing rhythms, soaring yet ominous melody, and frantic fret-burning mayhem. Throughout, the vocals create their own juxtapositions, veering from heartless growls to skin-splitting shrieks but continually amplifying the song’s intensity. The combination of all these sensations creates a visceral response, and the overarching mood is one that seems to combine anxiety and beleaguerment with fierce defiance.” – No Clean Singing

“I love genre mashups, and the debut record from Canadian group The Myopia Condition mixes the ideal ingredients for a hot & spicy chaos cocktail. Clocking in at 28 minutes, “Event Horizon” is a short and compact release, but one that will jolt and drill your brains so fiercely that you’ll be begging for mercy. This hard-hitting beastie runs on a drilling deathcore motor and a djenty gearbox boosted by a tech-death turbine that allows it to take you from 0 to 60 head injuries in just under 4 seconds.” – The Prog Space

“The Myopia Condition don’t waste any time teasing and they go straight for the jugular. “Event Horizon” is superbly technical and madly aggressive all the way through. The production is clean and hi-fi, showcasing all sounds and textures in great quality, but it also allows the grit and grind to scrape your ears. There are some stand-out moments like the menacing keyboard driven intro, the clean guitar and bass break in  ‘Separation from Classification’ and the use of shouty clean vocals in ‘Fighting Fables’. When it’s all wrapped, we have a nasty little 28 minute devil that takes no prisoners and also shows a remarkable degree of creativity! 8/10 ” – The Prog Space

“The Myopia Condition showcase some serious skill and killer musicianship with their debut release. Watch out for their release this fall and prepare to get shaken!” – The Independent Voice

“”Event Horizon” is not a long album, just twenty-eight minutes consisting of eight tracks and an intro, but it’s what The Myopia Condition manage to squeeze into this time frame that really matters. It’s an intense and well filled album that demonstrates a lot of seriously good musicianship. An engaging meld of crushing rhythmic grooves, devastating breakdowns and face searing growls all delivered as very ambitiously constructed tracks that ooze technical excellence and brutality in a very engaging manner that results in an all-out assault on the senses. 4.5/5” – The Metal Wanderlust

“If you listen to one album this week that you haven’t heard before; make it this one. You won’t be disappointed. [8.5/10]” – Metal Noise

““Event Horizon” is a reflection of approach desolation with an array of weapons and, as such, takes the fight against this inevitable ending. If you are going to tell a story, then you need to tell it well – and here the precision, the delivery and the language are executed with the craft of an ancient fabulist. 8/10” – CVLT Legion

“The worlds of technical death metal and metalcore rarely, if ever meet, but I think I’ve just stumbled upon the purest combination of the two that money can buy, and it’s actually really badass! Meet The Myopia Condition, they’re a Canadian act, and this is their first album, Event Horizon. It’s pretty short, as it clocks in at under 30 minutes, but it packs a punch all the same. You can hear a lot of Meshuggah, Veil Of Maya, and modern tech death like Inferi in their sound, but they have a flare that’s all their own.” – Noob Heavy

“Event Horizon is an impressive debut” – Scream Blast Repeat

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS FROM THE BAND

1. Loud As Hell festival is always a crazy memory fuzzed time. You sorta get on the liquor train with all the games and fun everyone has going on. Whether it be beersbie or beer bongs. Beer anything really. Anyways our guitarist Josh had a bit too much of the beer indulging the day before our set. We played early afternoon and as some of you may know it gets freakin’ hot in that Drumheller area. I (Josiah) remember looking over at Josh near the end of our set and he was looking like something wasn’t right. After the set, he ran out back and hurled. hahaha. None the less he was a trooper and killed the set and we put on a wicked show.

2. Festivals are always the most fun. When we played Armstrong Fest we got to do an interview with Taylor Made Studios. It was awesome. We all sat in a pool and answered in a goofy manner. It’s funny though because out of all the interviews we have had, for some reason Josh hasn’t found his way into one of them. Hopefully one of these times he will be able to jump in a pool and answer some questions with us.

3. This moment was at the last battle of the bands for Wacken Metal Battle Canada. It was our last song of the set, Fighting Fables. Right at the beginning one of Greggins kicks had a malfunction. It’s crazy because he had to play the rest of the set with just one kick. And if you listen to that song you should be impressed by that. hahaha. The funny thing is if you watch the live video of it you can just see the sheer “uh oh” moment in Greggins face. But he recovered like the beast that he is and finished off the set using just one kick.

4. Song 9000 actually was the writing name of the track. I (Josiah) just took too long figuring out a name for it and the boys were just like, “Let’s just keep the name Song 9000.” It is one of those things that just shows our goofy side I suppose. Lyrics are far from the name of the song, but hey, it’s a sweet title none the less.

Through a will to create pure rhythmic brilliant chaos, came a manifestation of power and heaviness from the west Canadian prairies.  The Myopia Condition was created.

It started with a melding of minds between Josh Gould (guitars) and Greg Glenn (drums). Immediately they went to work toying with ideas that had been in Josh’s head for some time. They soon brought in Robert Fearey (big guitars) and the chemistry was immediately noticed. On vocals is the gritty powerhouse Josiah Dyck and finishing off the five-piece on guitars is shred-meister Craig Mackenzie.  The vibe between the boys is vastly apparent. They have found a groove to exploit and continue to refine their sound.

Hailing from Sh-Red Deer, Alberta The Myopia Condition has a sound that combines crushing rhythmic grooves, devastating breakdowns, and ballsy in the pocket riffage. With influences ranging from Periphery and Meshuggah to Lamb of God and Oh Sleeper.

In 2018 The Myopia Condition made its way to the Canadian Wacken Metal battle finals which goes to show the hard work and passion these boys put into their music and their stage performance.

The boys have made appearances at festivals such as Armstrong Metalfest and Loud As Hell, and continue to hone their Djent-Core sound. Their debut eight-song album “Event Horizon” is being released on October 16, 2020.

“With a bewildering, cross-pollinated sound that makes The Dillinger Escape Plan sound like Nickelback, the math-metal crew Autocatalytica are pushing the boundaries so far that they may just fall off the world’s edge…  While the math-metal scene seems to have stayed in the same creative spot for the last 15 years, Autocatalytica’s music exists in its own psychotic realm, wherein jazz-tinged extremity and melodic mazes conjure a disorientating blur of psychedelic noise. The band have also earned themselves a formidable reputation as a truly mind-bending live act.” – Metal Hammer

“Crazy mathcore meets jazz-infused progressive music and avant-garde… Fabulously unique and always thrilling”- Metal Trenches

“Autocatalytica aren’t alone in bringing in so many outsides elements into a mathcore-focused sound, they are definitely one of the most ambitious and grandest groups I’ve heard do so to date.” – No Clean Singing

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS
1. Autocatalytica has had upwards of 15 different members, so many so that at one point they printed T-shirts for all ex-members with “I used to be in Autocatalytica” printed on them.
2. Autocatalytica has always been extremely DIY for better or worse, with Eric Thorfinnson doing most of the mixing/production on every release.
3.Autocatalytica has a strong connection to classical music, with an arrangement of Claude Debussy’s “Tarantelle Styrienne” appearing on their first release.
4. At one point during the initial recruiting process, Autocatalytica would have potentially had 3/4 of its member’s named Eric(k)
5. Many of Autocatalytica’s lyrics are influenced by Eric Thorfinnson’s experience with meditation retreats & practice.

Autocatalytica is a bubbling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by Guitarist/Vocalist Eric Thorfinnson.

Formed as a solo project in 2009, Thorfinnson has always drawn inspiration from a vast collage of different artists. From The Dillinger Escape plan, to The Mars Volta, to Bjork, to Devin Townsend, to 20th century composer Bela Bartok, Autocatalytica’s sound is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions.

Upon moving to Boston to study at Berklee in 2010, Thorfinnson recruited guitarist Erik Sorensen, Drummer Emmett Ceglia, and bassist Jon Anderson to flesh out Autocatalytica’s line-up. Over the next few years the band played its first shows and in April of 2012 released their debut EP “Horror Vacui”.

The group relocated to Brooklyn in the fall of 2012 and immediately began to rehearse and write a full-length record. In June 2013 the group began recording its eponymous LP, while continually playing shows along the east coast of the US. They released their Debut LP “Autocatalytica” in June 2014, and continued to play shows in and around Brooklyn, all the while furiously composing a follow-up record.

In early 2015, Thorfinnson found out he was going to have to move back to his native Toronto, ON, but despite this, the band decided to finish writing and recording the songs to their follow-up LP. In October 2015 tragedy struck the group when Guitarist Erik Sorensen suddenly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. Despite reeling from this massive trauma and coming to terms with Thorfinnson’s impending relocation, the group finished tracking drums to their next LP and played their final show as a Brooklyn-based incarnation on Nov. 21st, 2015.

Thorfinnson spent most of 2016 toiling away at the tracking and mixing of this next record at home in his native Oakville, Ontario, and December 9th, 2016 the group released the LP “Vicissitudes”, a 16-track maximalist genre-gauntlet of sporadic insanity.

Over the next few years, Thorfinnson spent most of his time on other projects, as the future of Autocatalytica remained uncertain. In 2018 he decided there was still more music to be had from Autocatalytica, and teamed up with his friend and drummer Neilroy Miranda (of local Jazz-math stalwarts “Dog Drive Mantis”) to rehearse and record a new record. The idea for this record was to be a much more collaborative effort than previous releases that had seen Thorfinnson handing all vocal and most guitar duties. The record features a smattering of collaborators including Parliament Owls / Telomere’s Devlin Flynn, Northern Heirs’ Scott Carruthers, and Plethora’s Gary Walsh to name a few. The LP “Powerclashing Maximalism” explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight eight tracks and 36-minute runtime, from the Meshuggah-esque stomp of “Borndun” to the Jazzy Math Rock of “Cheggo”. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, but no one knows what the future holds!

Thorfinnson adds about the upcoming album:

“‘Powerclashing Maximalism’ is an expression of the many different facets of progressive and heavy music I am engaging at this point in my life, with little to no regard for thematic consistency between tracks. Each song is a fully realized island of uniqueness that expresses something totally different from the previous one. On the last record, I felt like I was really losing perspective with what was good and quality (especially in the vocal department) seeing as I did so much of it completely isolated. With this record, I really wanted to move away from that mindset and integrate as many collaborators as possible to create a sort of “Broken Social Scene” of metal type vibe. This was a fantastically inspiring experience and I am really grateful for having been able to work with so many different amazing musicians throughout the process.”

Autocatalytica’s third album “Powerclashing Maximalism” is due out October 2020.

“Each band member draws in a different musical influence, from Alexisonfire (post-hardcore) to Blink-182 (pop-punk), to even Coheed and Cambria (progressive rock), creating a sound that is impossible to be kept in a box.” – Asha Swann

“For fans of hardcore, punk and just good rock n roll, people from all over the spectrum should get on this!” – Punkanormal Activity

L-R- Alex Hodges (guitar, vocals), Jeremy Toppings (bass, vocals), Darien Swolfs (drums), Adam Sakauye (lead vocals) and Aaron Stafford (guitar, vocals)

Starting out on the Ottawa metal/hardcore scene, T-Rex Marathon has adopted a unique sound that comes from a mix of Alternative Rock, Punk, and Post-Hardcore.

Formed by friends in high school, the band began to really take shape almost by accident and through dumb luck. The current lineup consists of Aaron Stafford (guitar/bass/keys/vocals), Adam Sakauye (lead vocals), Alex Hodges (guitar/bass/keys/vocals), Darien Swolfs (drums/percussion), and Jeremy Toppings (bass/vocals).

In a fiercely democratic writing process, every single member has input and a veto, sometimes resulting in a very long but completely organic process resulting in a synthesis of something everyone is happy with. As the band progresses, so does the love and attention that is put into each and everything they produce. The T-Rex Marathon family is and has always been, dedicated to making kick-ass music and leaving a mark in the industry, not only for them, but for their fans.

The boys in T-Rex, as the band is called for short, endlessly value their dedicated fans, affectionately known as Marathoners. After all, it is for them that they continue to write about what they want and play what feels right. T-Rex Marathon’s music is a simple blend of attack and melody that has the main goal of being not only fun to play, but fun to listen and rock out to.

The stage is a performing area, and this band refuses to give anything but their all at every show. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with bands such as: Of Burning Empires, Flesh Over Faith, Faithful Unto Death, and Project Mantra. They have also played Wretched Fest 1&3, Unite and Ignite 2012, 2014.

To date, the band has released 2 EPs Aurelia (2017), Eponymous (2016), and are readying to share with fans their first full length “Days Without Incident ” due out October 16th, 2020.

Fresh out of Calgary, Canada comes Lost In Static. What started as a cover band called Moron Mountain many years ago has now fully blossomed into an original metal act that has been playing stages since early 2019.

Comprised of seasoned musicians Lance MacBain, Noureen Amin, Jared Boyd, Tyler Johansen the metal band has just started their musical journey fusing the djent elements of progressive metal with metalcore.

The group works together to create music that is both aggressive and fun, with MacBain generally writing the music and MacBain, Johansen and Boyd collectively writing the lyrics. Relating to their band name, the messages they send through their lyrics convey relation to the feeling of getting lost in the “static” of the world, and all the events that take place; an almost overwhelming feeling of white noise.

With an emphasis on producing a tight live show full of headbanging, energy and moshing, Lost In Static is hitting the ground running with their debut album being released soon.

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS
1. NeoNera filmed the video for Saviour in a collapsing former coffee factory on top of raccoon waste and dead birds.
2. Music Video actress (Alice) was easily the coldest person that day. In between scenes, the band gave her a blanket, but she never complained.
3. NeoNera dropped out of a festival because the promoter/organizer tried to silence their song Saviour’s message on social media.
4. NeoNera once played a show in the center of the sun. Played at venue at about 4pm and the sun was directly on us making it feel about 600 degrees up there.
5. Social justice isn’t a bad word.
6. Right band wrong bill. NeoNera should have played upstairs. This about the fact that we are usually the heaviest or the lightest band on a bill. We get booked with both metalcore bands and alt almost pop rock bands.

L-R: Stephanie Leger (bass, backup vocals), Dylan Gunnell (guitar, lead vocals), Evan McCluskey (drums, backup vocals)

Photographer Credit: Dark Moon Productions.

NeoNera mixes progressive percussion with dynamic, driving bass and manic grunge guitar riffs, NeoNera is a three-piece alternative rock band from Ottawa, Canada. The band’s vocals blend frantic whispers, pounding highs, soulful lows with cathartic screams, and lyrics that peel the layers of conceit and corruption from our NEON ERA. An era of social media perfection and celebrity worship that hides scars beneath, fractured relationships, and even the voices in our own heads- all are stripped bare.

NeoNera plays live sets that offer frenzied energy, poor banter, and heavy yet danceable rock music.

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS
1. Guitars, bass, drums, and vocals were tracked by Lee and Caleb from their homes. The guitar tracks were reamped and the track was produced by Henrik Udd in Sweden.
2. Caleb has a really weird writing process and the bulk of the instrumentals for these songs were written in one day, which consisted of 14-18 hours straight of Caleb sitting in front of a computer.
3. The band would likely not have been possible without Kijiji. All of the members in the band were found via a Kijiji ad. Terence and Caleb met after Caleb met a drummer through Kijiji, and asked him who the insanely good vocalist on his tracks was.
4. Lee was originally the Lead Guitarist of the band until Caleb and Terence found out that he could sing clean vocals. This discovery led the band down a new path where Caleb transitioned to the Lead Guitarist role and Lee took over Rhythm Guitar and clean vocals.
5. During the recording of the album, Tom tore his pectoral muscle completely off his bone in a demonstration of pure muscle badassery and had to have surgery. He is currently recovering and will have to incorporate blast beats into his rehabilitation program.

SIONIS is based out of Edmonton, AB, Canada and was formed in 2018. It started as a remote collaboration between lead guitarist Caleb LeBlanc and main vocalist Terence Thiessen (RIOT in Paradise, For Reasons Lost). After the two realized they were on to something interesting, in 2019 they recruited rhythm guitarist and clean vocalist Lee Stanhope, and drummer Tom Wolf (All Else Fails, Original Violence).

On August 21st, 2020, SIONIS will be releasing their debut single ASTHENIA, off their upcoming album EGO, which is mixed and mastered by Henrik Udd (Architects, Bring Me The Horizon). The track also features hard-hitting, technical drum production composed in part by Jon Deiley of Northlane.
