“The album as a whole is a sneak peek into a larger project to be released in several three-movement chunks over the next several years. It is an arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring – a ballet written in 1913 that shocked audiences to the point of starting a riot in Paris. The aesthetic of the work is considered part of the ‘primitivism’ movement from the early modernist period in that its basic ingredients are simplistic and rhythmic, with melodies inspired by Russian folk melodies. The music retains its dissonance through its strange use of harmony and colour, angular rhythms, and sudden changes. Our arrangement and use of samples paint a sonic picture of ritualistic murder from the Midsommar festivities.” – 30 immolated; 16 returned

STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS ABOUT THE BAND
1. The band 30 immolated; 16 returned originally formed for the purpose of performing Dr. Death’s thesis work of the same name back in 2011 in Edmonton, Alberta. The premiere took place at a famous experimental noise/punk venue named The Bohemian that has since closed its doors. The premiere featured a choreographer and three professional experimental dancers that were each outfitted with wearable customized electronic instruments that reacted to their subtle movements (Reflexive Electronic Instruments). The show was a huge success, reaching the venue’s maximum capacity by the time of the performance with the fire marshall intervening. The thesis was defended in the summer of 2017 and is now a published work at the University of Alberta Libraries and is also available on the band’s Bandcamp page.
2. The concept behind the band 30 immolated; 16 returned is based on the characters and story of The Marquis de Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom. In both the studio albums and live shows, the libertines (band members) transport the audience into an atmosphere of sexual sadism and abusive violence through both sonic and visual oppression, with their costumes, props, and actions.
3. All of the instruments and vocals were tracked, edited, and mixed by 30 immolated; 16 returned. Mastering was completed by Jonsson at Dark Prod. Studios in Stockholm, Sweden.
4. Both Madame Champville and Dr. Death have earned Ph.D.’s in music theory and composition from the University of Alberta. Because of their experience in Canadian classical music and international lectures in cultural studies, there is a great academic interest in music and concepts.
5. In addition to the shows for promoters, 30 immolated have also hosted a number of shows under the name of Warwick music. We have invited: Old Witch, MetaladiaN, DirtStar, DemonSkulls, and NorthShroud to play with us.

Track by Track explained:
1. Introduction (Spleen) – It begins with a complex sample involving sacrifice by drowning, background melodies taken from the orchestral introduction of the original slowed down and distorted, and the opening theme. It moves into the main material with a large cymbal fade in.
2. The Augurs of Spring (The Burial of the Dead) .- begins with a primal pounding of all instruments in unison in a moderato tempo. It then carries through several textural changes, complex harmonies, and folk-like melodies that trade between guitars. The vocals are minimal, but are inspired by T.S. Eliot’s famous work The Wastelands
3. The Ritual of Abduction ( Glorious Love/Languid Agony) – a blistering quick movement in which the bass is featured with strange obtuse melodies. The guitars form kaleidoscopic harmonies while the drums play unstoppable blast beats throughout. The lyrics are inspired by Vladimir Pushkin’s poem “Spleen.”
4. Spring Rounds (A Paean) – the slower movement with the guitar and bass beginning the song with a strange bird-like melody. This fades away into a slow lumbering texture in which the guitars and rhythm section are separated through counterpoint. Near the end, the tempo of the song changes drastically to be blistering quick with simplistic melodies in the guitars and a drone in the bass. The song ends as it began – with a strange bird-like melody and a sample of the river in which the victim was drowned.

30 immolated; 16 returned are Hamilton, Canada’s most despicable extreme metal band. Developed through intense and abstract systematic theories of chaos and transgression – 30 immolated depicts the sexual taboos found in the Marquis de Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom, through a non-stop battery of screaming guitars, punishing drums, and thundering bass accompanied by the cries of torture and violence. In addition, Madame Champville often brings her favourite pet(s) / slave(s) along, who under threat of further violence, distribute gifts of Shit Cookies and Blood to the band’s spectators.
30 immolated; 16 returned began their sadistic journey in Edmonton, Alberta, but have since moved to southern Ontario in search of new willing victims! They have since played several concert dates in Toronto and Hamilton, most notably at the Hamilton Death Fest for Neurotic Entertainment and as openers for Toronto’s own Arcanevil, and for Mexican death metal outfits Darkside Ritual and Disrupted.
30 immolated; 16 returned ’s sonic violence has been exported internationally with physical and digital sales in China, the United States, and Slovenia. Their goal is to continue to expand their terror throughout southern Ontario, Canada, and beyond to the rest of world!
