EPK – Ivy Gardens – Death of Don Valley (2025)

Publicist – Jon Asher – jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

For fans of Acid Bath, Rush, King Crimson, Mastodon, Kyuss

Band: Ivy Gardens
Album Title: Death of Don Valley
Release Date: August 29, 2025
Label: Paper Cut Recordings

“It may be a fairly surprising shift. This music is more dour than Goon, which had more positive energy. Most fans will have seen this coming; it’s been in the works for a long time, and most longtime fans will have heard something from this record live and loud at some point. We tried to make almost every song unpredictable. Much of it is dark, heavy, and oppressive, but always in tandem with moments that uplift you out of those emotions into something greater.” – Ivy Gardens

“First of all, can we just give a lot of overdue appreciation to the fact that there are still hard-gigging bands out there that play with the kind of urgency as IVY GARDENS. You can damn AI music straight to fiery pits of hell; this is where the real sound and fury is at. Another thing I appreciate about Ivy Gardens is all the dark humor. You see it in their new music video, with its Red Fangish tongue-in-cheek adventure. This one features a vintage style videotaped car chase, which would play well off a viewing of V/H/S/94. …Fake blood ahead… We’re arrested right away by the powerful strumming of the guitar as “Eye Witness” opens. Drumming is crazy, a frenetic attack of Animal from The Muppets, chasing that beat all over the place… Of course, the classic organ-sound of the keyboards adds a certain kind of spookiness to it all, which can be at once cheeky, mysterious, and cool. I myself love this send-back to ‘60s rock, while respecting that Ivy Gardens brings us a sound that clearly feels “now.”” – Doom and Stoned

“With the premiere of the video for “Burden” below, Niagara Falls progressive sludge trio Ivy Gardens announce their second full-length, Death of Don Valley, will be out Aug. 29 through Paper Cut Recordings. The follow-up to the sans-bass three-piece’s well-received 2024 debut, Goon, is introduced with the lead single “Burden,” which you can find the band playing live in the video premiering below. This ethic would seem to be the crux of Death of Don Valley itself, hence “live off the floor sophomore album” in the headline below. “Burden” benefits from the lack of trickery behind it, from the visually-evidenced capacity on the part of guitarist/vocalist Andrew Blackborow, key-specialist/synthesist Sebastian Hogg and drummer/vocalist Joe Zandwyk, the latter two of whom are also responsible for samples on the record, and while one can hear a bit of Melvinsian do-rock-and-make-it-weird ethos underlying, “Burden” brings charge to coincide with its telltale rhythmic intricacy — not quite doing ‘math’ in the musical sense, but not far off. They say the album’s more complex than the last one, and even if it was tracked entirely live with no overdubs, “Burden” bears that out.” – The Obelisk

Reviews – Goon (2024):

The Canadian National College Radio – May 2024 – Top 20 Loud – #9 Ivy Gardens (Earshot)

The Canadian National College Radio Loud Chart – #8 Ivy Gardens (Earshot) – For the Week Ending: Tuesday, May 21, 2024

Goon – #38 on DoomCharts.com (April 2024)

“…the sonic equivalent of a panic attack.” – Canadian Beats

“Stoner metal, a little chilled sounding, but fast paced, cool stuff.” – Mosh Pit – WORT 89.9 FM (Madison, WI)

““Boner” has got a really cool groove, too, showing you what can happen when you’ve got a band that is truly possessed by the power of The Riff. It’s one of those grinding, motoriffic jobs in the spirit of Kyuss’ “Green Machine.” And it doesn’t take long before we, too, are caught under its sway. The retro organ sound from the keys provides a spooky touch to the chorus, which comes like a sigh of relief after the tense build-up of those guitar-driven verses. The drumming is swarmy and frenetic, and strikes with power at pivotal moments. The breakdown at 4 minutes is a headbanging oasis, made even cooler with the synthesizer’s late-’60s garage twist.” – Doomed and Stoned

“This Canadian trio are promising us a debut album that is “a relentless onslaught of vulgar, belligerent punk, sludge and sweat” when it is released in April. If this lead single is anything to go by, things are going to get very belligerent and sweaty when the full-lengther finally hits our death decks.” – Uber Rock

“GOON is an action packed and turbocharged release powered by Pissed Off grooves and a snarling Punk Rock Attitude which allows IVY GARDENS to deliver a devastating FREAKY slice of Psychedelic Sludge/Stoner Metal.” – Outlaws of The Sun

“Nothing about Ontario’s Ivy Gardens is predictable. Describing it is just going to sound trite. I love it when I know I’m going to miss the mark no matter what I write. But here’s my take: take some awesome keyboard parts from 1967, link them to 80’s New Romantic Synth parts played on guitar, add equal parts Stoner, Punk and Post-Metal. I mean, these guys drank the wrong whiskey and mixed it with the wrong drug while listening to the Clash, and then came down listening to Elvis Costello and early Queens of the Stone Age. Someone somewhere was blasting the B-52’s and the Stooges. It’s a heady mix that when mashed together is cohesive, fresh and original.” – Clean And Sober Stoner

““Goon” by IVY GARDENS. Pretty cool stuff. I like the inventiveness of it. Not something you’ll find carbon copies of. I also like the Stoner edge. Definitely worth checking out.” – Metal-Temple

“Alright, folks, if you haven’t already been swept up by Ivy Gardens, now’s the time. The Niagara, Ontario crew—masters of raw, unfiltered punk and sludge—delivered their first full-length album, Goon, back in April 2024. And let me tell you, it’s an auditory onslaught like no other… Goon is more than just a debut album; it’s a setlist Ivy Gardens fans have been craving. Since their thunderous arrival on the scene in 2021, they’ve been wreaking havoc across Canada’s east coast. And with a summer tour already in the works, this runaway train isn’t slowing down. Ready to dive in? The volume’s punishing, the intensity’s relentless, and there’s zero room to catch your breath—it’s like a panic attack in musical form. Ivy Gardens is daring you to join their world, where the mosh pit never ends, and the ringing in your ears is the only encore you’ll get. If you’re into Kyuss, Truckfighters, or Queens of the Stone Age, then Goon is about to become your new favorite album.” – Papy Jeff Metal

About The Album Artwork:

A corpse lies between the banks of the flooded Don Valley River, circa 1908.

The artwork anthropomorphizes the river itself. A river that once formed a foundation for life in the area, slowly killed until nothing but mud and toxicity remains.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

The record is about death. The unstoppable decay of oneself and the world around them.

The life and death of the Don River encapsulates this.

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

1. BURN FOR MURDER
“I hear they burn for murder…. Well, they say it just takes a second to die.” This is a quote from Lee Harvey Oswald, hours after having successfully assassinated the President of the United States. The lyrics are as violent and impulsive as the music. Frenetic, aggressive, murderous.

2. EYE WITNESS
Pure fiction from two perspectives. One commits an act of violence. The other experiences it on the receiving end. This instrumental is incredibly intricate by our standards. This is a piece we kept cramming with ideas until it was one of the most dense pieces of music on the record.

3. BURDEN
An almost satirical take on the nihilist’s dream. Musically, Burden is perhaps the most straightforward track on the record. Quick and succinct.

4. GUIDING HAND
A song about being pushed forward by a higher power. This was the first song we wrote for the album. It is an exercise in repetition, improvisation, and variations on a theme. At the time, it was the longest song we had ever written, and it was quickly dwarfed by even bigger pieces.

5. FROZEN LIMBS
Martin Hartwell was a bush pilot in the Canadian Arctic. In 1972, his plane crashed. After 31 days, he was found alive, but only after having consumed the flesh of a passenger who didn’t make it. This track is one of the most intricate compositions on the record. It builds to perhaps the heaviest moment in our discography.

6. GEARTH
A moment of peace. Mostly improvised, relaxed, and completely instrumental.

7. ASTRAY
The song is about Sarnia’s “Chemical Valley” and the consequences of unchecked industrial pollution. Musically, Astray establishes its core rhythms and grows naturally with improvisation and variations on its themes.

8. BLISS
Our biggest arrangement to date. Ultimate encapsulation of everything we were trying to do as musicians on this record, as well as finally reaching the sound we’ve been hunting for all these years.

9. GOLDEN
Finally wrote a song about the sun exploding. Ultimate ecological destruction.

Fun Facts – Story Angles:

1. In one of our last music videos, we filmed a very bloody and very gory murder in a shower stall with a hockey skate. Lots of fake blood, ground beef, and guts everywhere. Fake scalp covered in blood. Real horror show. We kept filming as long as nobody was around and only started cleaning the guts when we heard a bunch of kids lining up to use the change room at the local arena where we were filming.

2. At our last release show in St Catharines, I met two very young kids in the front row right before we were about to start. They were pretty pumped for the show and I told them to wear some earplugs cause this was gonna be insanely loud. Myself and Andrew both brought double the cabs we usually bring, we were absolutely deafening up there.

After the show I meet the kids again, thank them for coming out, they seemed pretty bewildered but absolutely into it. I ask them if they wore earplugs, and I don’t think either of them did. One kid asks me “when does it stop?” I think that little dudes ears were ringing like crazy. What an icon.

Ivy Gardens, the experimental sludge metal band from Niagara Falls, Canada, has announced the release of their highly anticipated new music video for the single “Burden” and their sophomore album, “Death of Don Valley”, set to drop on August 29th, 2025, via Paper Cut Recordings. The record marks a bold new chapter in the band’s sound, with more complex compositions, darker themes, and a shift into a more experimental and atmospheric direction.

Formed in the parking lot of Princess Auto, Ivy Gardens’ journey began with a mutual love for covering Rush instrumentals and an obsession with heavy, sludge-infused sound. From those humble beginnings, the band’s unique chemistry and vision have led to the creation of their most ambitious and thematically focused album yet.

“Death of Don Valley” is a concept album, exploring the themes of death, decay, and the unstoppable erosion of life and the environment. The concept is rooted in the history of the Don Valley River, a once-thriving waterway now plagued by pollution and degradation. The album’s artwork reflects this with the haunting image of a corpse between the banks of the flooded river, anthropomorphizing the water itself as it becomes a symbol of death and decay.

The material on “Death of Don Valley” was designed to be heard live, with massive stacks of amplifiers and a commitment to delivering the music in all its raw, unfiltered glory. It marks a bold new direction for Ivy Gardens; the band has no plans of slowing down. Their dedication to the project is evident in every note they play and every lyric they write as they continue to push musical boundaries and explore new sonic territories. Lyrically, the record draws from a mix of historical events, such as the tragic story of Canadian bush pilot Martin Hartwell, and fictional narratives, creating a dark and gripping atmosphere. The songs explore everything from violence, death, and survival to environmental destruction and existential dread. As the band explains:

“Death of Don Valley is the natural progression of their sound, with more complexity and a deliberate thematic structure. Musically, it marks a shift in Ivy Gardens’ approach. This album is darker, more experimental, and more intricate than our previous work on 2024’s Goon. While Goon carried a more positive, energetic vibe, this LP is more about confronting the darker aspects of life, and it reflects a deeper exploration into musical and thematic complexity.”

Ivy Gardens’ influences are vast, ranging from progressive icons like Rush, Yes, and King Crimson to sludge pioneers like EYEHATEGOD and Iron Monkey. Their sound blends elements of stoner metal, sludge, math rock, and progressive rock, creating an unpredictable listening experience that takes the listener through a series of emotional and sonic landscapes.

Fans of Ivy Gardens can expect an intense live performance soon, as the band does plan to tour in support of the new album this coming September. Stay tuned for dates to be announced, and Ivy Gardens are bringing their thunderous sound to stages nationwide. Expect a live show that will test the limits of your ears and your emotions.

Prepare For A Cosmic Thrash Alien Invasion w/ Canada’s Crüzer’s New Lyric Video “Look to the Skies”

+ Show Dates + CD Pre-Order

Unleashing their debut EP “Look to the Skies” this past April, Crüzer is not just a band—they are a cosmic metal assault from the Great White North. Hailing from Vancouver, BC, Canada, their sound is as unstoppable as an alien invasion force, tearing through the atmosphere with electrifying solos and unforgettable hooks.

In the lead up to their upcoming local show dates on June 27th at The Astoria and July 26th at The Kingsway (details below), Crüzer is unveiling the lyric video for their EP’s title track.

“The title track, Look to the Skies, deals with the threat of an extraterrestrial invasion force, and the attempts of the world powers to stop it (or maybe they know more than they’re letting on…). The chorus hook on this song might be my favourite of the whole album, love how it just comes in out of nowhere after a whole verse and pre-chorus of harsh blackened thrash vocals,” adds vocalist Eric Wilmott.

Watch and listen to the lyric video for “Look to the Skies” at https://youtu.be/bvTh1eWEJZ0

Featuring five tracks of raging, rip-roaring, intergalactic speed metal, with a multitude of different flavours catered to the tastes of every thrasher, but with a melodic and humorous twist. Crüzer‘s latest EP, “Look to the Skies”, will have metalheads headbanging to the power of the riff and celebrating the bizarre and otherworldly wonders of the universe.

“I believe this EP will be well received by any thrasher who enjoys a touch of melody with their mosh fodder. While in the studio, we ensured that these songs were polished and perfected, with a good dose of melody and catchiness infused into the madness. We aim to provide a thrash buffet of sorts, a smorgasbord filled with various flavours of speed, melody, and attitude. Tracks like ‘Pit Vyper’ have some serious hair metal vibes, and it is preceded on the record by ‘(I Need) Thrash’, a Slayer-esque song! EARTHLINGS!!! Crank it to 11, and prepare for an out-of-this-world heavy metal experience. Your alien overlords are excited to unveil our latest slice of interplanetary propaganda, LOOK TO THE SKIES!” says Willmott.

“Look to the Skies” is recommended for fans of all things thrash, such as Havok, Exodus (Zetro era), Destruction, Metallica (Ride the Lightning era), Exciter, and 80s Judas Priest.

The EP is streaming on all digital platforms as of April 4, 2025. Crüzer plans to unleash the 5-track record on CD, with the release date to be determined. CD pre-order will be available from the band via their Bandcamp at https://cruzermuzik.bandcamp.com.

“Look to the Skies is the debut EP from Crüzer, a recently formed (2023) thrash band from Canada. It is an old-school affair with plenty of speed, a mix of harsh and clean singing and razor-sharp riffs. They aren’t afraid to poke a little fun at the genre on “(I Need) Thrash” and have a knack for hooky guitar work and choruses (“Pit Vyper”). Crüzer aren’t breaking the mold but clearly have an ear for the sound of ’80s thrash, making Look to the Skies an excellent first effort.” – The Metal Crypt

“This Vancouver band call their music “cosmic thrash”, and this is their debut EP, where we get 5 tracks mainly in the old tradition of thrash, but with a melodic and humorous twist. So this is in other words really good stuff. And with a song like “(I Need) Thrash” they have the perfect thrash anthem for every mosh pit (or circle pit). If that song doesn’t make you want to shake loose and bang your head like a maniac, then there must be something wrong with you (if you’re handicaped you’re excused of course). Fact is that any of these 5 songs should make you want to bang your head, so what are you waiting for?” – HardRock.info

“Canadian band Crüzer are out with the EP “Look to the Skies”, and metal is the style explored on this production. This is a good, old fashioned take on the thrash metal tradition, and one which the band explore in a few different manners. We have blazing fast and firm affairs, revolving around quick and numerous tempo changes and a high degree of momentum for starters. We also get a case of the classic chugging guitar riff variety of thrash metal tossed into the mix, and at the end of the EP the band switch over to a style and orientation a bit closer aligned with the good, old NWoBHM expression. Besides exploring the style in a few different manners, a striking feature of the songs here are the ebb and flow between raspy, slightly distorted lead vocals and clean, controlled and melodic lead vocals. A feature that gives this EP a rather striking identity in itself. An production to seek out by those who enjoy thrash metal explored in a bit of an old school manner and with a fair degree of variation inside of that context.” – the Viking in the Wilderness

Now available as of June 20th, Calgary’s high-intensity, no filler rockers LOVER, release their limited edition cassette for their latest EP “Fatal Attraction”. Fans can now rock out with a physical anthem in hand. Heavy metal fans can experience what “Fatal Attraction” truly is: a fast, real, kick to the face. Even though the EP is only two tracks, this is a sampler of what’s to come. The opening title track is an energetic rush of sound that captures the ups and downs of being overwhelmed by desire. The lyrics feed this feeling by talking about lust and substance abuse. Track 2. “Bad Love” lyrically is a tough and mean reality check. It’s based on a true story of love gone wrong. It has aggressive riffs, mean solos, and is captures the strain of a mind in love and turmoil.

“High energy, vocal harmonies, guitar harmonies, pounding drums. We deliver a full Rock n’ Roll experience. We only had a few songs ready at the time of this recording, so we all decided on our best 2 songs. We have been diligently writing and have more than enough material for a full-length record. We are starting to write a 2nd record already. Most songs are demoed. We are hoping to get some help with the costs of recording our first full-length record.” – Lover

“The next EP that I am mentioning, this is probably one of my all-time favorite bands right now. The band is called Lover and they are from Calgary, and the EP is called Fatal Attraction, that is my number one EP of this year, these two songs are absolutely heavy rock and roll slingers, and you’ve got to check that out.” – Banger TV – Connor Babin – Top EP of 2024

“Late in 2024 heavy rockers’ Lover released their 2-track EP “Fatal Attraction”. While small but mighty, the title track and companion “Bad Love” are both fantastic slices of throwback 80’s metal and now to complete the experience the band is releasing it on limited edition cassette (June 20th)! The Lover future is bright with this creative release along with a recent announcement of a spot at Armstrong MetalFest in Canada July 11-12. Catch the show this summer and catch Lover on your Home for Rock and Roll…W-J-O-EEEE” – WJOE – Findlay’s Home for Rock & Roll

Deathcore tyrants Autumn Lies Buried have just dropped their latest music video for the blistering track “Told Off Witta Sawed Off,” now available on Spaceuntravel’s YouTube channel. The video marks a milestone in the band’s career, as it supports their recently unleashed EP, “Mob Mentality”, unveiled on June 6, 2025. This release is the first of two EPs slated for 2025 under Exitus Stratagem Records, setting the stage for a year full of fierce music and high-energy performances.

“Told Off Witta Sawed Off” is a full-throttle anthem aimed at those who talk big from behind closed doors but fall silent when faced with real confrontation. With aggressive riffs and unrelenting energy, the track calls out the hypocrisy of those who run their mouths but fail to follow through. Featuring vocalist Dustin Jamaal Mitchell of Filth, this collaboration adds an extra layer of intensity to the song, which is sure to resonate with anyone who’s ever had to deal with empty threats and weak words.

“We wanted to capture that feeling of dealing with people who talk shit from the safety of their little bubbles but never hold that same energy when it’s time to step up in person. How many times has someone run their mouth from safety but never held the same energy when they see you in public? The only thing we want from those plotting our downfall is a whole lotta ‘leave me alone’. Or else…” says the band.

The release of “Told Off Witta Sawed Off” coincides with the conclusion of their successful Hellhowler Tour with Casket Robbery. Known for their electrifying live performances, Autumn Lies Buried’s shows have left audiences breathless, and they now bring that same raw power to their visual presentation. The music video, directed by Criket Camacho (The Homie Criket), complements the track’s fierce energy with intense, high-impact visuals, capturing the band’s dynamic presence and their unrelenting drive.

With “Mob Mentality” setting the tone for 2025, Autumn Lies Buried is poised to take the metal scene by storm. The EP dives deep into themes of social apathy, power struggles, and standing tall in the face of adversity, and fans can expect the second EP later this year. They are recommended for fans of Tech N9ne, The Acacia Strain, and Twisted Insane.

“It’s important to have a strong opener, and that’s why for this week’s FFO, I’m introducing you to, Autum Lies Buried “Told Off With a Sawed Off.” Straight off the bat, this one launches into some extreme metal and has a fun hardcore swag to it. Taken from the band’s forthcoming record, Mob Mentality, “Told Off With a Sawed Off” is a cut-throat introduction into what this band is all about. For Fans Of: Filth, Left to Suffer, Heriot” – For Fans Of: MetalSucks Playlist – May 24, 2025

“This EP isn’t just heavy—It also carries a powerful social message… if you’re looking for something that crushes skulls but still carries a positive social message, look no further!” – Decibel Magazine

“Featuring five tracks, Mob Mentality doesn’t hang around, it’s fast and furious (just like the band themselves) and places all the needles firmly in the red. Hopefully you’ll never be locked in a room with a depraved serial killer, but if you’d like to experience some of that terror by osmosis, look no further than opener ‘Strappado’. It’s the sudden sonic shifts that create a sense of unease, taking the listener way out of their comfort zone and holding them there over the course of fifteen frantic minutes. Autumn Lies Buried have been creating waves in the underground metal scene and Mob Mentality is sure to send them superterranean.” – Devolution Magazine UK

“Something that should be fairly obvious to anyone who presses play on the EP seeing as Strappado is the opener and it is a snarling, spitting, and foaming beast of a track. In fact, it’s quite ‘paint by numbers’ as far as deathcore goes. Thoroughly enjoyable, but not particularly remarkable, until the rapping starts. It, alongside the destructive Guillotine and the dangerous Told Off with a Sawed Off, stands out. All because Autumn Lies Buried show off their creativity, speak their truth, and deliver everything with the kind of passion that can only come from people who are extremely pissed off. Unsurprisingly, the EP ends in riotous fashion too, serrated and violent sounding, it’s Debt of Silence and there’s a hardcore underbelly here. It will leave you seeing stars.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“Everything you hear on Mob Mentality leaves you wanting more, and that’s what counts. The vocals are solid, the riffs are nicely filthy, the drums are super tight, and the mix of different styles is well-crafted. Autumn Lies Buried is now on my radar! For fans of The Acacia Strain, Filth, and Left To Suffer, among others.” – Zware Metalen

“Socially and politically aware “Guillotine” slaps hard with thought provoking lyrics about rooting out the corrupt with blast beats galore from Cole Hill. Reaching into the void of Slam, a brutal roar before the final verse is the push to make you move before a violently turbulent mosh part brings it home in style. A guest vocal appearance from Dustin Jamaal Mitchell of Filth graces the audio violence that “Told Off Witta Sawed Off“, a gang chant of “f*** you!” early on a moment of magic. The pacing is electric, sending a chill down the spine as the band elevate a Metallic Hardcore structure into Deathcore territory with vim and vigour, putting their backs into it and pulling out Kublai Khan vibes in the process. The final onslaught is the crushing “Debt Of Silence” which churns and burns from the very start, tight polyrhythms tearing a hole in the fabric of time and space to create urgent leads after some serious blood gargling from Wilkins. It has to be said that Cane Potter’s guitar work is more involved on this one, something which pushes the whole thing to a new realm of pain for the eardrums to endure… [8/10]” – Metal Noise

“Mob Mentality by Autumn Lies Buried is an EP that stands as a rallying cry in these f*cked up times. It is the kind of music to make you want to smash the system, written and performed by a band who encourage you to question everything and take nothing for granted. It is the soundtrack of a revolution we all so desperately need to free us from the shackles imposed upon us by a bumch of bastards. It is also… *checks notes*… ah, yes… Metal as f*ck. 4/5” – Black Metal Archive

“If this was a purely Deathcore EP it would be easy to say that this is up there with one of the best things I have heard in the genre however with this heavy Rap inclusion it does take a little getting used to, however when you just goo with it you realise this slaps hard no matter which vocal is happening. You will end up throwing down and breaking anything in arm’s reach throughout the 15 minutes, and it feels so good to let it go. Does the combination work? Yes, it does, and very well indeed. There have been many crossover groups, but this feels more, it feels more than a gimmick or for access to a wider audience. The Deathcore would put most people off, and this is by no means any kind of compromise – I’m not sure that Autumn Lies Buried would know how to compromise. Mob Mentality goes as hard as you will hear and test you in ways you didn’t know possible, but it is so good, I just want more! 8/10” – Rock n’ Load Mag

“Brought to a close by Debt Of Silence, a track contemplating and dissecting the corrupted and destructive leadership of country and world with its own turbulence of vocal and lyrical disputation amid creative contention, the Mob Mentality EP more than proved a vital and inspiring quarrel upon the senses and thoughts. As its impressive final track, the release violated and inflamed with its every passing moment and controversial breath, it all shared with rousing invention and truculent passion not forgetting debilitating virulence.” – The Ring Master Review

“With a unique blend of metal and rap, they have earned a reputation for grabbing listeners by the ears and taking them on a sonic journey that is as heavy as it is provocative.” – Silent Radio UK

“A deathcore type thing, brutal, a smidge of a nu-metal thing.” – Mosh Pit Radio – WORT FM 89.9 FM (Madison, WI)

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – June 20, 2025

Out Now! MORNINGSTVR Releases Synth-Based Black Metal Album “A Fate Engraved”

+ Tour Dates (CA/WA/OR/ID)

New Album “A Fate Engraved” Out June 20th, 2025

Today marks the official release of “A Fate Engraved”, the latest album from Synth-Based Black Metal artist Morningstvr. Following months of anticipation built through single releases and music videos, the twelve-track album is now available on all major streaming platforms, accompanied by a special album release video.

“A Fate Engraved” represents the culmination of nearly six years of artistic evolution for musician Sam Tchortov. The album spans 44 minutes of atmospheric, synth-driven black metal that draws from medieval history, occult themes, and Tolkien-inspired fantasy. As the second installment in what Tchortov calls his “Unholy Trinity”, the album bridges the narrative established in 2024’s “In Memoriam of the Blvck Wind” with what will eventually be the concluding chapter of this ambitious trilogy. Tchortov comments:

“The album tells of a land far to the north of the world, with cold and abysmal ranges covered in snow, ancient structures of an empire from a forgotten age, much like in the image of the medieval period, continuing the tales of Slavic witchcraft, knights charging their last battles, betrayal, heartbreak and rituals upon a full moon.”

Throughout the album, such themes are expressed intensely throughout each song with a hazy and atmospheric glow to them, as they are instrumentally, each song is instrumentally carried by earth-shattering tremolos, raw rhythm guitars, depressive drums, medieval rhythm synths, and cold lead synths.

Since establishing Morningstvr in February 2019, Tchortov has collaborated with numerous artists and collectives, including Blvck Mass, Obscurum, and Blvsphemy Records, but “A Fate Engraved” stands as his most fully realized solo vision to date. The album is available now on YouTube and is recommended for fans of Darkthrone, Xasthur, and Axius Link.

“It is innovative and the use of synth is awesome. Morningstvr is a genius and delivered an excellent album. Be prepared to be blown away.” – Project MetalMusic

“Morningstvr has also described the album as a venture into a “frozen hell,” and in line with that “Whispers of a Nameless Fear” is a chilling, spectral song, but equal parts harrowing and haunting in the unearthly musical visions it spawns. In its opening phase a conjunction of riffing and keys immerses the listener in a searing and eerily wailing shroud of sound. The music strangely shimmers and quivers, and a host of wraithlike voices seem to cry out their anguish above booming bass drums and tumbling tom progressions, while Morningstvr adds his own vicious screams. But as previewed, the music is also haunting, shifting into an almost pastoral, orchestrally influenced melody, beautiful but melancholy in its mood. Yet the music again expands, those sounds of celestial voices rise, the drums rumble, and the scorching screams pierce through. At the finale, sounds of wind and distant storm, and of frightening screeches, draw this chilling song to a chilling close.” – No Clean Singing

“The standout moments come when Morningstvr leans fully into the weird like the war horn driven “War Chant”. It taps into ancestral roots with Russian vocals and tribal percussion, while “The Black Forest” drops into pure dungeon synth territory by drawing one into the mists of medieval Germany. These shifts never feel forced though. They’re chapters in a storybook that is penned in frost and shadow. While some may be put off by its rough edges, A Fate Engraved thrives because of them. It’s not aiming for sheen and perfection. It’s crafting atmosphere, lore, and identity on its own terms. While black metal may not be up everyone’s listening alley, Morningstvr offers something rare to those who appreciate mythic storytelling. A journey that is both personal and fantastical, frozen in time but still moving forward.” – Amplifying The Noise

“In my opinion Morningstvr are a very great sounding synth orientated black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE “Beyond The Cold Wastes” “When Mountains Behold Tombs Of Nine” “Her Eyes In Winter Fog” and “Whispers of Nameless Fear”. 8 out of 10.” – Occult Black Metal Zine

“Burden”, the first single from “Death of Don Valley”, showcases a satirical take on nihilism, with dark and comical undertones. The track was one of the first songs written for the album and features a fast-paced, relentless tempo that gradually picks up speed in the studio. Lyrically, it’s a satirical take on the archetypal nihilist, with a dose of doom and gloom that veers into a comical extreme. The band describes it as “quick and succinct” — a track that encapsulates the essence of their new sonic direction.

Watch and listen to the music video for “Burden” via its premiere on The Obelisk HERE.

0 Chris Adler (Lamb of God) Teams Up w/ TONIC BREED For Explosive New Single “Anew”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – June 19, 2025

Norwegian Thrash TONIC BREED Drops Explosive New Single “Anew” Featuring Chris Adler of Lamb of God

Tonic Breed’s new single “Anew” features Grammy-winning drummer Chris Adler — in what frontman Patrik K. Svendsen calls the most Lamb of God-style drumming he’s heard from Adler since his days in the band.

Tonic Breed, the metal project led by Norwegian musician Patrik K. Svendsen, is set to release its highly anticipated new single, “Anew,” on June 19, 2025. This high-octane track features Chris Adler, the iconic drummer of Lamb of God, lending his blistering rhythms to the song. The collaboration is expected to set the metal world on fire as Tonic Breed blends its signature thrash sound with Adler‘s unmatched drumming prowess. The song was also mixed and mastered by acclaimed producer Machine, who also handled Lamb of God’s “Ashes of the Wake” and “Sacrament”.

Chris Adler comments:

“I was quite curious when I got an email — and some riffs — from Patrik. He’s done some cool shit and I was flattered to be on his radar… I researched it for a minute and agreed. We did have to take a minute to both feel good about what this would be — meaning I beat up his song like a fucking Rocky movie — but I knew it had the parts and strength. It’s been a privilege to work with Patrik. Humbling. You’ll know what I mean when you hear it.”

Svendensen adds:

“I originally sent over a rough demo of the song, a storm of riffs strung together with placeholder drums and a suggested structure. We worked together on a new structure for the song, and Chris took the lead on shaping it into something far more unique and effective than my original draft. To me, this is the most Lamb of God-style drumming I’ve heard from Chris since he was in Lamb of God. I’m sure some metal guitarists would kill to hear Chris Adler’s drumming behind their riffs — I’ve been lucky enough to experience that firsthand.”

“Anew” will be available for streaming across all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, on June 19th, 2025. The release of “Anew” marks a new milestone in the band’s career, as they prepare for their upcoming album, which promises more collaborations and even more explosive metal tracks to follow past high-profile collaborations, which already include Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth), Björn Strid (Soilwork), Michael Gilbert (Flotsam and Jetsam).

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – June 18, 2025

STYGIAN FAIR Unveils New Single “All of Us”

The Next Glimpse Into Upcoming Album “The Hidden Realm” Out July 2025

Following the raw intensity of their previous single “Abide Your Master”, Swedish heavy epic metallers Stygian Fair unveil a new and more introspective side of their upcoming album “The Hidden Realm” with the release of “All Of Us” — available now on all digital platforms alongside an official music video on the Rockshots Records YouTube channel.

Described by the band as “the closest we’ll come to a ballad on this record”, “All Of Us” explores themes of loneliness and conscience, trading thunder for nuance while keeping the emotional impact intact. With its haunting melodies and melancholic undertones, the track stands as a powerful reflection on the fragile spaces between isolation and inner strength.

The upcoming full-length “The Hidden Realm” marks a new chapter for Stygian Fair — sharper, more melodic, and more direct than ever before, yet uncompromising in its authenticity. Lyrically, the album dives deep into modern chaos and ancient myth alike, tackling everything from AI, political cults, and consumerism to existential reckoning and forgotten histories. It’s a record about the truths we bury, the world we ignore, and the cost of staying silent.

Known for their refusal to chase trends or rely on backing tracks, Stygian Fair keep things real, both in the studio and on stage. Their live performances are raw, honest, and deeply human. No masks. No click tracks. Just honest, melodic, heavy music delivered with purpose.

Featuring members with deep roots in the Scandinavian metal scene — including Andreas Stoltz (Hollow, Binary Creed), Emil Holmqvist and P-O Jonsson (Crave), and Anders Hedman (Witch) — Stygian Fair blends epic heavy metal with progressive influences and strong, emotionally driven songwriting. Their sound has been described as “uncompromising, melodic and timeless”, drawing comparisons to bands like Tad Morose and Memento Mori.

With “All Of Us,” Stygian Fair shows that heaviness doesn’t always come from volume—sometimes, it comes from honesty.

ABOUT:
Stygian Fair is a band from a small town called Umeå in the north of Sweden. The band has existed for about nine years now, and it all started when both P-O Jonsson and Emil Holmqvist decided to leave a band called ” Crave” to lay the foundations for Stygian Fair. Erik Andersson joined on bass, and Andreas Stoltz on lead vocals and guitar. This first incarnation of the band never made a big mark, recording or gig-wise… due to life’s crooked path.

In the autumn of 2016, Erik left the band, and a few weeks later, so did Andreas as well. Soon thereafter, the band gathered new momentum by welcoming Anders Hedman as the new powerhouse bass player. After a couple of auditions, Pontus Åkerlund became the new singer, and with this setting, the band recorded and launched an EP named “Into the Coven”. The band began playing live frequently at different local venues. At the end of August 2018, the band entered the studio again, and in October of the same year, came the debut “Panta Rei”. In January 202,0 came the sophomore album “Nadir” and in April 2021, “Equilibrium”.

In September 2021, Pontus Åkerlund decided to leave the band. A few weeks’ search for a new vocalist led to the return of Andreas Stoltz as lead vocalist and guitar player, after his years in Binary Creed and Hollow. In late 2022, Stygian Fair entered the studio once again to record ten new powerful songs with Stygian Fair’s trademark strong melodies. It is titled Aradia after the witch daughter of Diana, the goddess of the hunt and the moon.

Now it’s time for a new chapter with a new album due in 2025 with Rockshots Records.

Drummer and filmmaker Ethan D. Henry is proud to announce his first solo effort, ASHES OF THE SUN, and its debut album “Gods With Machines” due out August 1st, 2025, via his label Ignorant Tourist Productions.

Henry is best known as the drummer of hardcore titans FREYA (2004 – 2008, 2017-present), featuring EARTH CRISIS members Ian Edwards, Eric Edwards, and Karl Buechner, along with co-writing and performing on the THE LAST SEASON 2003 album “Called It Civilization”.

Henry has worn many hats over the years in his bands. Whether he needed to play bass, guitar, or drums, he was always up for the challenge.

“I was always a bass player with guitar second in my comfort zone. I could always sing, but I wasn’t like great at it. I don’t know when it happened, like when I became good enough to play any instrument, if we needed a drummer or guitar player, I was like…Okay, I’ll give it a shot. Then one day I was a drummer, I guess? I think I have impostor syndrome. ha”

Over the years, Henry had compiled a huge catalog of songs he had written. Unsure what to do with them, He sat in his studio and started to record them. Not sure what would become of them. He had his friend Jason “Jocko” Randle at CAPTURE STUDIO (Syracuse, N.Y.) to take a listen and put his mixing and mastering touch on it. After those sessions, Ethan decided his eclectic song list was cohesive enough to make an album. Thus, ASHES OF THE SUN was born.

“After recording about a dozen songs, I developed solos and vocals for them. I felt the way I played the solos and sang would help bring the songs together and could make the collection work as a full-length album. I’m very happy with the way GODS WITH MACHINES came out. It’s simply the way I play and write, and shows some of my influences in the metal/rock/grunge/alternative scene and how they blend together. The vision for this album was to have a flow like some of my playlists, and I imagine most people’s playlists. I hope that fans will enjoy the mellow acoustic/ballad intros that transition into hard rock/ metal flows. I wanted these songs to reach rock fans and metal fans alike. I’ve been in metal bands for a long time and love the brutality Karl and Dan brought to Freya and The Last Season, but I wanted to reach a broader audience. So I chose to tone the heavy vocals back and sing the album. I think ultimately, whether it’s my metal, rock, or grunge influences coming through in these songs, it sounds like the era of music I grew up listening to. late 90s, early 2000s. I like that about this record,” adds Henry.

The nine tracks on “Gods With Machines” were written, performed (drums, guitar, bass, vocals), and produced, along with the album artwork, all by Ethan D. Henry. Overall, the album is ultimately about having faith in God and constantly questioning it. It expresses feelings of being misled by those you admire and trust. It’s about being yourself and finding your spiritual path and God.

“On this particular album, my lyrics are about an alien race that lands on a planet after destroying their world. Realizing the people are looking to the sky for heaven, they pretend they are gods and take advantage of the natives, steal their resources, and live in their paradise. Eventually, the people rebel against the gods after years of abuse and lies. They overthrow the gods and realize they aren’t what they claim to be,” says Henry.

Bringing fans back to the era where metal and hard rock ruled the scene, and Headbangers Ball was kicking, Ashes of the Sun reveals the first single “A New Way to Die”. Henry explains the track:

“The chosen one is lost and giving up. He has lost his faith and doesn’t have the drive to carry on when he hallucinates a child taunting him. He cannot catch the child and continues to follow deeper into the wild. Eventually, he concludes this is the end and there is no hope. No one will find him. No one will save him. There is no heaven. We live in hell. What’s the point of going on? It’s time to throw in the towel.”

“One-man solo band ASHES OF THE SUN is the work of drummer / filmmaker Ethan D. Henry and he’s just dropped his new single, “A New Way To Die” from the forthcoming full length album “Gods With Machines” (Aug. 1st). Razor sharp riffs, heavy duty percussion and an overdrive rhythm section rule on “A New Way To Die” and it’s pretty glorious. We’ve had a chance to preview the entire album and it’s a hard rock juggernaut just waiting to be unleashed that is sure to please.
