Held In Secret Fight Against Drug Abuse In New Single ‘Static’

New EP “Nomads” Out May 29th

Held In Secret are five hardworking individuals who spend every day creating the heaviest and djentiest listening experience known to the Ottawa metal scene. On May 29th, 2020, they will release their sophomore effort “Nomads” with the single ‘Static’ available in advance via its exclusive premiere on TheCirclePit YouTube channel HERE.

The single ‘Static’ was written about a friend lost to drug abuse. Vocalist Matt Zephyr explains the track:

“‘Static’ is an answer to a call for help, the opioid crisis is facing a record-breaking number of deaths caused by Fentanyl, subtly incorporated in Cocaine and MDMA. This crisis took a friend of mine, Tyler Hay of the Ottawa band Southpaw (now called Glaive). Someone who meant a lot to my small hometown and this song tells the story of how we all should’ve listened better; many people shy away from asking for help. Self-destructive behaviour is a call for help. And we all should listen better. For the greater good of the world.”

“Nomads” is, according to the band, an improvement from their debut EP. “Nomads” is a concept release with highly relatable subjects, set to clean and heavy metalcore. Moving away from “repetitive early 2010’s metalcore”, Held In Secret diverges into a more accessible sound, interesting to a broader public, incorporating choirs and piano, all while retaining all of the heaviness of the first EP. It also features guest vocals from Garrett Russell of Silent Planet on the title track.

Recommended for fans of Silent Planet, Volumes and Architects, “Nomads” will be available on all digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.

Track Listing:
1. Ties (4:31)
2. Nomads (feat. Garrett Russell) (3:31)
3. Downcast (3:55)
4. Gaia (3:31)
5. Static (3:44)

About:
Held In Secret was impulsively founded in January of 2016 by Matt J. Zephyr (vocals) and David Lamothe (lead guitar) with the explicit goal of taking over the world. Since then, they have been joined by a great family of like-minded people with the addition of William Gunn (bass), Tommy Lemieux (drums) and Joey Sollazzo (rhythm guitar).

These five individuals work hard every day to create the heaviest and Djentiest listening experience known to the Ottawa metal scene. Wanting the listeners to feel like they are understood, the lyrics from Held In Secret paint pictures of trauma, despair, and hope.

On December 7th, 2018, Held In Secret released their debut EP “Dawnbreaker” (Produced by Dark Moon Productions). After a year of performances, our protagonists came together in the studio once again to produce their sophomore effort called “Nomads” set for release on May 29, 2020.

Taking pride in what they do, Held in Secret ensures a wild ride for their audience as Zephyr climbs structures while scream-rapping extra multisyllabic lines; Lamothe, Gunn, and Sollazzo sing backup while shredding, jumping around and headbanging; often jumping off stage to get in the pit. The intense stage presence continues with Lemieux banging it out, full throttle behind the kit.

Held In Secret is just warming up, they have more live shows planned, as well as more music has been written ready to follow “Nomads”. Keep an ear out!

““Through The Sulfur Eyes” is a solid EP… the overall sound that is achieved is impressive… PLAGUE WEAVER has an interesting doom-like black metal sound that works well with layered deep and high-pitched vocals. I think fans of doom metal and black metal aficionados will appreciate this one.” 8/ 10 – Metal Temple

“From the moaning leads to the slow lurching cadence and the deep monstrous roars, the opening of the title song sounds like the beginning of a death/doom track, but although that oppressive feeling of plague and decay persists, the band also pitch into fits of percussive mayhem, fevered riffing, and vocal madness, and they stitch flickering bits of guitar lunacy into the song as well.” – No Clean Singing

“breaking through to listeners in 2020 is a seriously steep hill to climb and bands have to either push the envelope, do something that can’t be found elsewhere, or just amaze and electrify with each release to grab attention and stay relevant. Plague Weaver do all that on Through the Sulphur Eyes and it’s up to you to show them how good a job they’ve done. What I’m saying is, go buy it. Now.” – Nine Circles

“Through crawling malignancy is how Plague Weaver approach their art, and these songs are filled with grim mood and malevolent auras” Indy Metal Vault

“There’s a darkness running throughout Through the Sulphur Eyes that is quite powerful… The riffs are weighty, drenched in a toxic malaise, yet also possessing the razor-sharp cutting edge of underground black metal. It’s a captivating combination, that moves forward at a steady, relentless pace. What really lingers though is a feeling of uncleanliness; this music is corrosive, carrying with it a taint of infection and, well, plague.” – The Sound Not The Word

“”Plague Weaver” are a collection of melancholic and sorrowful tunes that drag you deep into hell.” – Absit Omen (self-titled EP review)

Plague Weaver is Black/Doom metal from Canada; created in December 2018 by RM. The original idea was to create music in the vein of old school Black metal mixed with other musical influences coming from Death/Doom metal.

Black metal mixed with a sickening atmosphere is what’s in store for listeners as the solo project of RM; it is the musical interpretation of RM’s vision of the world, philosophy, the occult, and general experiences. It is the culmination of over 25 years of travel through metal /dark ambient/ experimental music RM has created.

A debut self-titled EP was released in 2019 and is followed up in 2020 with the EP “Through The Sulphur Eyes”.

Plague Weaver is a solo project, but there are plans to create a live lineup for performances.

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 11, 2020

Watch 80’s Synth Meet Guitar Shred In TWO CAR TRAIN’s Music Video ‘Gone Away’

Two Car Train have released their next single ‘Gone Away’ from the forthcoming debut album “Off The Rails”. Featuring killer vocal hooks, 80’s synths rhythms and shredding guitar, the song is about that feeling of invincibility that comes along with a new love. Yet, sadly comes crashing down and you’re torn apart. The Western hard soul experience is ecstatic to be able to share this music they have been working on feverishly since 2017.

Watch the video for ‘Gone Away’ HERE.

Their previous single ‘The Door’ can be heard here.

Both singles are available for download and stream on CD Baby, Apple Music, and Spotify.

Two Car Train is comprised of musicians who amongst them, have extensive history performing and recording, which sets their debut album “Off The Rails” in a strategic position to be accessible and appeal to a wide variety of listeners with a penchant for the rock and indie markets. The debut album is expected out later in 2020. They explain that it is both new and innovative while holding on to familiar elements. They expand:

“The album will be well received because it’s unlike anything out there right now, yet, it has a familiar vibe that harkens back to the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s that takes the listener on a musical journey through which they can relate in a way that can’t be put into words.”

BIO:

In late 2014, Ray Ray called up an old friend Lyle Thistlewaite (drummer). Lyle told Ray Ray that he started working with a killer singer (Mike Brooks). Mike and Ray Ray clicked right away and realized they were in total music synchronicity.

Ray Ray brought in Ryan Jones (bass). Ryan and Ray Ray met in 2012 when they were hired guns/session players for Falling For Scarlet through to late 2013. Within 10min of Ryan auditioning for us, Lyle shouted….”You’re hired!”

Unfortunately, Lyle left in 2015 due to artistic differences.

Ray Ray then called on Jason Hagan (drums). Jason was a monster player and like Ryan, was hired within ten minutes of auditioning. Jason’s style and meter was like a freak of nature. Unfortunately, after playing with us for a year, tragedy struck and Jason’s life ended way too soon. This threw the band in total stagnation and mourning. For the next 8 months, a sea of drummers auditioned but none seemed to fit. We almost pulled the plug.

One day Ray Ray was an actor on a tv movie of the week. That’s where he met a fellow actor Nii Engmann. They hit it off instantly and couldn’t stop talking about music as the cameras were being adjusted. Nii came out to an audition, brought his funk-rock style of drumming and gelled with the band instantly.

With new vigor and intensity, TWO CAR TRAIN was not only back on track, but they were better than ever!

Montreal, QC – April 10, 2020

DYATLOVE Premiere Video ‘Fragile Fixation’ via TheSludgelord; Debut Self-Titled EP Out May 29th

Vancouver, Canada’s Dyatlove are gearing up to release their self-titled debut EP this year and ahead of that are revealing their single ‘Fragile Fixation’ digitally with an exclusive premiere of its music video via The Sludgelord HERE.

Their sound is eclectic and diverse, at times morose and at other, heavy sludge. An EP that requires attention to take in, each song takes the listener on a ride with complex lyrical content aiming to grab attention. Guitarist Rikki Jennings-Buford shares his thoughts on the EP:

“I think this EP will be appreciated by more than just fans of heavy music. As musicians, we write the music that we want to hear and we aren’t fans of just metal. There is something for everyone who digs guitar-based music on this EP. We hope these 4 songs give you a good representation of our inspirations and where we could go musically.”

The single is the result of Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) returning from a getaway with the idea for the song. It evolved into a track that is one of their more classically structured songs but they felt it would be a song that most people would gravitate to right away. Lyrically it is about the pull of depression and not knowing how to get out of it and how it can take over your entire frame of thinking. Understanding you are hurting people but not knowing how to get out of it.

The other tracks on the EP show the growth and diversity behind Dyatlove, who intend to release more music in short order. The EP was recorded at Rain City Recorders with Matt Roach over the course of a few days.

For fans of Spotlights, Hum, Thrice and Explosions In The Sky, the self-titled release arrives on May 29th, 2020 along with a cassette version being available from Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

1. Pass The Heavens (8:14)
2. Empty Lungs (6:53)
3. Fragile Fixation (4:51)
4. Old Haunts (8:11)

About:

Dyatlove is a passionate foray into the realm of morose singer-songwriter overtones set alongside heavy music. Longtime friends Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) and Rikki Jennings-Buford (guitar) bonded over bands such as Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, and Pinback.

This array of influences drives the diversity of Vancouver, Canada’s Dyatlove, who don’t feel the need to pigeon hole into a particular genre. From sad songs to crushing sludge metal to 2-minute hardcore songs, Dyatlove conveys emotion and brings the heavy with drop A tuning.

Starting individually, the band works on riffs and ideas, eventually bringing them together to be fleshed out further. As full believers of limitless creativity, they don’t tie themselves to classic song structures. The lyrics come from many places, some are stories, some are personal experiences. There are songs about love of family, songs about loss, songs about anger and songs about struggles and addictions. Although varied in the subject matter they all have one thing in common, feeling.

Performing with the same intense passion and emotion that they bring to the jam space, Dyatlove intends to really connect to their fans, and show what their songs mean to them. With Rob Sheldrick (drums) and Justin Lacey (bass), the quartet delivers with an infectious openness and energy. Their self-titled, debut EP is being released on May 29, 2020 with the cassette version being released by Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

“DIE ANOTHER DAY have just launched a new lyric video for their single “Wild Fire”! This one is a banger.” – The Circle Pit

“As a fan of this style, it pleases me to say that these guys have done an exceptional job at defining this sound. Stitched together with a catchy chorus, and a fast paced, energetic guitar solo to finish the track (Wildfire) off. ” – Uber Rock

“The high-energy newcomers draw from many bands on the metalcore and pop-punk spectrum – A Day To Remember, Thrice, and Atreyu are key influences. Spin the new song ‘Fear The Future’ – we think you’ll dig what the promising young band has going on.” – New Fury Media

“a pristine piece of stylish metal music which will garner appreciation by both the rock and metal crowd. They push the boundaries by mixing numerous genres to achieve originality.” – Boston Rock Radio

“I’d be interested in hearing what else they have to offer as this is a pretty strong showing for a band that formed a few months ago back in the Spring of 2019. They’re off to a great start and I wonder what else they may be hiding.” – The Music Below (August 2019)

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 10, 2020

For fans of Katatonia, Anathema, Amorphis

Rockshots Records: Finland’s Sinisthra (ft. Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis) New Single ‘Closely Guarded Distance’

New Album “The Broad and Beaten Way” Out May 15th via Rockshots Records

Finland’s Sinisthra featuring Amorphis vocalist Tomi Joutsen are sharing the first single ‘Closely Guarded Distance’ off their forthcoming album, “The Broad and Beaten Way” due out May 15, 2020 via Rockshots Records.

Listen to ‘Closely Guarded Distance’ at the following links:
Lyric Video HERE.
Spotify HERE.

The band adds:

“”Closely Guarded Distance” is the centerpiece of the album and probably the hardest to digest of the whole lot. So we chose it as the first “single”. It’s some 13 minutes long, divided into three parts. The first phase is the courting, the second phase is the fulfillment and the final phase is the aftermath. Musically it’s an amalgamation of several half-finished and half- discarded songs we had lying around. I think it represents what Sinisthra is about, with all our main ingredients neatly distilled into one song.”

Best described as sadness tinged with despair and hope, “The Broad and Beaten Way” encapsulates raw emotion set against heavy and brooding music. This album comes 15 years after the debut record “Last of the Stories of Long Past Glories”, and its manifestation has been a slow and arduous process. The songs were written ages ago while other projects, primarily vocalist Tomi Joutsen’s presence in Amorphis, were given priority from the band members.

Guitarist Markku Mäkinen writes the majority of the music for the highly elusive band whose original and complex sound has often been mislabeled. The band explains the evolution of their music:

“We all had a history in thrash and death metal bands, but when the band originally came together in 2000, there was not much metal at all in the sound, it was leaning more towards grunge and at times trip-hop. After the first album in 2005, the sound took a lot more metallic turn and something came in from 70’s prog as well. Metal genres are irrelevant to us.”

The name for the album comes from “Paradise Lost” by John Milton; “The Broad and Beaten Way” is a bridge from Hell to Earth with the lyrics taking inspiration from the fall of man, and from leading a chaotic and self-destructive modern-day life and trying to find solid ground and perhaps even some peace of mind. “Eterne” is the first song, where the metaphorical Adam and Eve are expelled, both from Eden and from their union, and in the last song “Ephemeral” Adam, solitary, finally accepts his past actions as futile.

The melancholic sojourn, suitable for fans of Katatonia, Anathema, and Amorphis is available for pre-order at the following links:

About:

SINISTHRA comes from Finland and has been in various stages of existence since 1999. Their style of music is basically metal, drawing from a wide source of different influences and blending them to a sound that can’t really be compared to any one single band. Always quite melancholic, most of the time quite heavy, and often with strong shades of 70’s prog with lesser shades of 90’s grunge.

The name SINISTHRA derives from the Italian word sinistra, meaning “the left side” and representing the allegory of creativity, femininity, individuality and general free-thinking pathways of the Left Hand, without the hollow “satanic” or any other religious connotations. The lyrics veer away from most commonly used themes and focus heavily on more personal and intimate subjects. Sinisthra is all about contrasts, frail yet crushing, sad yet content, silent but roaring. Melancholy without utter despair. Darkness tinged with light. Gravel covered with honey. The only dogma is never to acknowledge musical boundaries, and never to use the words “love” and “death” in the lyrics.

The band released one album in 2005, called “Last Of The Stories Of Long Past Glories” to favourable reviews and got labeled “gothic metal”, somewhat misleadingly, but as the singer Tomi Joutsen joined Amorphis, his career skyrocketed and Sinisthra’s didn’t, so due to lack of time from his part, things slowed down.

Now Sinisthra has completed their second album “The Broad And Beaten Way” and are ready to finally release it. The road has been long, winding and mostly uphill, and promises to remain so in the future as well.
