“The Naked High was already being greeted by applause when they walked on stage. Their mushroom-infused sound pulled in the crowd faster than a turkey on Thanksgiving. I mean, as soon as they opened up with “Liquid Love,” a song that resonates well with the stoner crowd, people were already into it. Simon Ouellet, singer and frontman, is basically what would happen if Ronnie James Dio had a child with Phil Anselmo.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews (2019 Live Review opening for King Buffalo, Mountain Dust)

“The night opened with The Naked High. Their sound covered a lot of diverse metal territory. Their vocalist had an operatic Iron Maiden vibe, while the guitar playing took cues from Ozzy Osbourne‘s career and beyond. The second song in their set had a distinctly early metal sound, but a lot of the guitar parts evoked a slightly younger generation, particularly the squealing tendencies of Zakk Wylde.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews (2017 Live Review Opening for Truck Fighters)

“The group play an eclectic mix of blues/stoner rock and metal, and do so very well! For a band that hasn’t been around for too long, I feel like they’ve really nailed down their unique sound, even if the elements they use are rather familiar. Musically, the style falls in between Black Sabbath and the bluesy bravado of Danzig, and their songs that night were infectious with groove and tasteful guitar play. Singer Simon Ouellet showed his vast arsenal of vocal styles as well as his entertaining mid-song banter. This is one Montreal band everyone should keep their eye out for.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews (2016 Live Review opening for Bongzilla, Black Cobra)

“This Montreal band has some legit balls, and has made their debut with six tracks worthy of twenty year veterans. The Naked High is somewhere between metal and hard rock, with just a touch of doom. Excellent musicianship, songwriting and production quality (recorded, mixed and mastered at badass studio, wherever that is). I keep playing this one, and the digital download comes with lyrics, which are worth it for the song “Juice” alone (a song about Colonel Angus, so to speak). Here’s a good example of an album where the cover art pretty much performs perfect vetting for its clientele. If you dig the cover, I’m pretty sure you’ll dig the tunes, and if the cover is a turn-off for you, you are probably making the right call to walk away. Here is the opener, “Mean Amphetamine”. It gets better and better as it progresses.” – Heavy Metal Text Books

The soul in the solo and the gift of the riff. The blues from the heart and the colour in the art.

Emerging from the underground of Montreal comes The Naked High. Joining forces in the summer of 2015, connected by a love of similar music ranging from blues to rock to metal, the dauntless quartet brings an electric chemistry to their music, amplified when they are on stage.

The Naked High is Hugo Leclerc-Charron delivering solos on guitar, Simon Ouellet with Iron Maiden-esque vocals, Phil Perreault keeping the low end steady, and Charlie Cayouette backing everything up with his rocking beat.

Soon after they formed they began writing their first EP, the self-titled debut came out in 2017 and showed off their proclivity for catchy, smooth tunes with personal lyrics. Their wide variety of influences and love for rock n’ roll ensures their music is written effortlessly and naturally.

Sometimes it starts with a drum beat, or a bass line, or even a vocal line, regardless of how it starts out, it always turns into something melodic and passionate. Self-described as the ’70s meets Seattle, they combine two eras of music into their own distinct sound.

It didn’t take The Naked High long to become familiar with the stage and they have built a solid reputation and following. Focusing on charisma and providing an unforgettable experience, the band cooks up a strong live performance every time.

Fast forward to 2020 and The Naked High released another EP “Tap Into The Evil” on May 29th. The 6 songs show the evolution of their sound pushing forward into the next chapter of the band as they continue to learn from the legends that they admire while forging their own respective path in Rock N Roll.

As much as quarantine has been a major downer for most of us, there are those who are making the most out of it. This includes Ominous Eclipse who has a new single “Eclipse” complete with a quarantine music video that is premiering on The Circle Pit.

“The lyrical concept of ‘Eclipse’ is the representation of our name, Ominous Eclipse. It is a bleak tale of the sun being separated from the earth where on the blackened planet everything dies in darkness with despair. Musically, this is our most ambitious composition. With the 11-minute running time, orchestrations, and other new elements, we have strived for what we feel will be our magnum opus.”

“Eclipse” is one of four tracks on the upcoming EP of the same name which will be released later in the year. Groovy and technical, the band thinks this album will come as a surprise to long time fans. The band quotes:

“The tracks are more rhythmically focused as there is far less lead guitar shredding than our previous work. However, the guitars are still the focal point of our sound. With this release, we have a much less aggressive sound than our previous release “Sinister”.”

Recommended for fans of Death, Gojira, and Opeth, “Eclipse” can be watched right now on The Circle Pit HERE.

About:
An ambitious band passionate about writing and playing extreme music, Ottawa based metal band Ominous Eclipse has been tearing up the local scene since 2014. Founded by Graham Murphy (guitar/vocals) and Ryan Clements (bass/vocals), and later joined by James Close (guitar/vocals) and  Jeremiah Marshall (drums) the band draws their inspiration from a wide variety of genres creating a unique sound all their own.

Founding member and movie buff Graham Murphy explains how they came up with the band name which was partially inspired by the movie “Pitch Black”.

“Ominous Eclipse follows the idea of the world falling into eternal darkness. The envisioned concept is of the earth being blocked off from the sun leaving the world in uncertainty and falling into chaos.”

Following the origin of the band name, many of the lyrical themes pay homage to the plots from movies and books and sometimes situations in everyday life. Shortly after their formation in 2014, Ominous Eclipse released a four-song EP “Beyond The Apocalypse” with a full length “End Of Days” following not long after in 2015. In 2018, they released their second full length and third studio release “Sinister”.

Not wanting to be easily categorized and predictable, the band finds that over their evolution from the first release they have moved away from thrashy overtones to become more diverse including more heavily stated melodic and technical sounds with a solid groove and death foundation. Ominous Eclipse has been gaining speed in their region opening for bands such as Revocation, The Agonist, and Kalmah and has also acquired an endorsement with Indie Guitar Co. They are looking forward to their next release, a planned EP for 2020, and spreading their music to a wider fan base.

– 30 –

“Their new song “Spiral Into Insanity” has a strong death metal foundation, including very melodic leads, but there’s more than enough groovy thrash inspiration and even a hint of black metal there. ” – Decibel Magazine

“‘Sinister’ is a high-energy track launched by heartless riff jabs, ear-scouring string squeals, and neck-snapping drumwork. The vocals come for your throat, too, in an effusion of heartless roars and face-scraping shrieks, and the song is accented by flurries of spidery, darting fretwork and by a pair of flashy, fluid, but demented solos. It becomes a thrashing gallop, but without becoming any less venomous in its delivery.” – No Clean Singing

“As the evolution of Ominous Eclipse has progressed, the band have hybridized a seething core of death metal sound with elements of thrash, black metal, and melodic death metal. But if “The Horde” is a sign of what’s to come next, they’re reaching for new levels of monstrous and electrifying destructiveness.” – No Clean Singing

“Whilst we wait with anticipation to hear the rest of the record ”Sinister” is yet another outstanding track on what looks set to be a very exciting record from ‘Ominous Eclipse’.” – Spirit Level Magazine

“a game changing release for Ominous Eclipse that places them center stage for my pick of the best Canadian Metal release this year….Every track stands strongly on its own, thanks to the band’s immense talent and flawless production. Ominous Eclipse is a band that carries the banner for the N.W.O.C.D.M. with pride and distinction. Out September 14th on all streaming platforms, I would recommend Sinister to fans of Death, Iron Maiden, Infernal Majesty and Gojira.” – Hellbound

“Demonstrating their ability to blend genres within metal to create a compelling album, this is an impressive sophomore delivery. Each track brings something different and feels refreshing even after multiple listens.” – Splice Magazine

The duo of Deathnoisefrequency has been relatively silent over the past few years in their home country of Saudi Arabia, but 2020 will change all of that with an onslaught of noise ushering in their debut EP “Horrid Dirge”.

Slated for July 17, 2020, this two-track EP is just the beginning of what the band had planned for listeners. “Horrid Dirge” contains two chapters of a conceptual story, which will be released in full by the end of the year. Chapters 3 and 4 are just a sample of the brutal wall of sound that will crush everyone who hears it. The band shares their hopes for the reception of their initial offering:

“We think it will be received very positively! In our opinion, we are bringing something different and new to the table. It is not what you hear every day, it’s a mix of things that every dark music listener would love to hear!”

And then there was NOISE!

Get ready to be uncomfortable, to be sitting on the edge of your seat, this is not music for relaxation, it is tense and chaotic! The video for the single “Chapter III The Mortician’s Lamenting Dirge” sets this pattern with dark and morose visuals embossing the scathing wall of noise accompanying it.

Jump headfirst into the beginning of this story with their music video premiere for the lead single via TheSludgelord HERE.

About:

Saudi Arabia’s Deathnoisefrequency started in 2016, comprised of two members, Ghassan Al Fudail- All (guitars, feedbacks, reverbs, echoes) and Ahmed Mahmoud (vocals and lyrics) who are presently also working together in a band called Grieving Age, one of the premier metal bands in the country. With the intention of stepping away from the doom/death they have become familiar with, the duo has taken the leap into complete noise and beautiful chaos.

And then there was NOISE! Deathnoisefrequency was born; something that goes too far, something without boundaries, something that can’t be judged. A limitless musical experiment with an all-encompassing creepy, dark and depressive atmosphere where noise and death metal are smashed together with reckless abandon.

During the year of conception, they released a single and descended into relative silence. Through that lull, they recorded new songs, two of which will see the light of day on the debut EP: Horrid Dirge, to be released July 17, 2020. This EP is but a part of an upcoming LP destined for ears by the end of 2020.

Seattle Progressive Melodic Death Metal DRAEMORA Share Guitar Playthrough “Guilt” via GearGods

Debut EP “Awakening” Out June 26th via Ultra Nast Records

Relatively new to the Seattle metal scene, Draemora is comprised of seasoned musicians who, despite COVID-19 slowing their debut, are ready to show the nation and the world their EP “Awakening” on June 26, 2020, via Ultra Nast Records.

The EP, lyrically, is about battling with drugs and alcohol, and the long journey out of that hell. Heavy, prodigious and heartfelt, vocalist/guitarist Terry Jenkins notes his personal attachments to the lyrics he writes:

“The lyrics come right out of the pages of my life, the things I went through, and how I got through them. Music is a huge outlet for me to dump the good times, bad times, and everything else in between. The majority of the lyrics are a culmination of direct excerpts from letters, poems, and life experiences from the period between May 2018 and August 2019. It was a very intense time in my life.”

Today, the band is excited to share the guitar playthrough for their latest single ‘Guilt’. The track starts off with vocals and a guitar, but quickly changes gears and enters areas that can be compared to “Alien”-era Strapping Young Lad moments. It’s very powerful and intense.

Guitarist Terry Jenkins adds:

“If you love Mesa/Boogie Rectifiers, Telecasters, and Melodic Death Metal with huge epic riffs you are going to really enjoy this playthrough! I enjoy playing this song very much and it’s my pleasure to share it on Gear Gods! What an honor! If you have additional comments feel free to ask in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them!! Word!”

Recommended for fans of Strapping Young Lad, Whitechapel, and Nevermore; watch the playthrough for “Guilt” via its premiere on GearGods HERE.

About:

Draemora was formed in November 2019 in the Seattle, USA area by Terry Jenkins (vocals/guitar) after his separation from his previous band Odyssian. Seeing it as an opportunity to take a chance and try something different, he wrote a handful of songs with lyrics and demoed them out at his house. These demos attracted the attention of soon to be bandmate, ex-Jesus Wears Armani drummer Jared Conelie and ex-Odyssian vocalist Taylor Wood.

After fleshing out the demos with their own personal touches on the songs, Jenkins found local guitar player Max Taylor and set out to record the 5 song EP “Awakening”.

The EP is nothing short of heavy, melodic metal infused with honest and heartfelt lyrics; This combination works perfectly with the band’s mission to evoke an intense emotional and spiritual experience that brings out the raw emotions that are suppressed all day in normal day to day lives.

“This EP lyrically is all about battles with drugs and alcohol and the long journey out of that hell.  I feel that it will connect with anyone who has ever had mental problems, family problems, or experienced relationships falling apart. I didn’t want to come across as disingenuous, or contrived and wrote about things that I really went through and put my life and my problems out there for anyone to interact with as they wish. I think this recording is intense and beautiful.  It’s angry and sad and uplifting and I think is a reflection of a human living in modern-day society.” says Jenkins.

With a slight pause in the band’s plans due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Draemora is already working away on a full-length album to follow and getting ready for when they can pummel crowds live with their heavy melodic brand of progressive death metal.

Their debut EP “Awakening” is due out June 26, 2020 via Ultra Nast Records and will be available on all major digital platforms.

About:

Dyatlove is a passionate foray into the realm of morose singer-songwriter overtones set alongside heavy music. Longtime friends Sam Caviglia (guitar/vocals) and Rikki Jennings-Buford (guitar) bonded over bands such as Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, and Pinback.

This array of influences drives the diversity of Vancouver, Canada’s Dyatlove, who don’t feel the need to pigeon hole into a particular genre. From sad songs to crushing sludge metal to 2-minute hardcore songs, Dyatlove conveys emotion and brings the heavy with drop A tuning.

Starting individually, the band works on riffs and ideas, eventually bringing them together to be fleshed out further. As full believers of limitless creativity, they don’t tie themselves to classic song structures. The lyrics come from many places, some are stories, some are personal experiences. There are songs about love of family, songs about loss, songs about anger and songs about struggles and addictions. Although varied in the subject matter they all have one thing in common, feeling.

Performing with the same intense passion and emotion that they bring to the jam space, Dyatlove intends to really connect to their fans, and show what their songs mean to them. With Rob Sheldrick (drums) and Justin Lacey (bass), the quartet delivers with an infectious openness and energy. Their self-titled, debut EP is being released on May 29, 2020 with the cassette version being released by Coup Sur Coup Records that will feature an exclusive bonus track ‘Die! Kill! Pig!’.

“DYATLOVE conveys emotion and brings the heavy with an impressive, eclectic EP” – Idioteq.com

“The track (Empty Lings) is amazing and the band will quickly make you a fan if you like groups like Converge, Deafheaven, or Spotlights.” – Ghost Cult Magazine

“they’ve got one behemoth set of four savage cuts on this record that warrant a major repeating, and a lineup of tunes that command & demand your full attention.  This whole experience met every hope & expectation I could have had, then smashed & surpassed them all – Dyatlove’s EP didn’t let me down for a solitary second – you need this record on your playlists this year.” – Sleeping Bag Studios

“Their sound is eclectic and diverse, at times morose and others bone crunchingly heavy. ” – The Sludgelord

“This is a collection of songs about love of family, songs about loss, songs about anger and songs about struggles and addictions all wrapped up in the confines of half an hour’s worth of music…” – Metal Noise

“Here is Dyatlove — post-metal / post-rock / sludge band from Vancouver, Canada, and their fresh song called “Empty Lungs”. It’s uncompromisingly heavy music. From the very beginning to the very end of the track it feels like I am in the engine compartment of the old locomotive. Guitars, drums, bass, and vocal creates incredible tension and pressure. I just can’t resist it, and it takes me to its dark world.” – Faeton Music

“for those who love  Deafheaven, Converge, Russian Circles, Touche Amore, Alcest, Pallbearer… A beautiful discovery.” – Mad-Breizh

“Empty Lungs really evacuates the air in the liver. Again sludge, doom again, heavy and laid-back job. I like it a lot.” – Metal Perver

“Featuring guest musicians from bands like Born Of Osiris and past members of Soilwork and Obscura, this album has some beautiful instrumental work that hits hard. Despite there being so many guests, Josh Dummer is the mastermind behind the band and everything is his vision. The instrumentation is a huge highlight for me on Embodiment Of The Divine. Tracks like “Infinite Mutation” really show off the abilities of Dummer and everyone involved. The track is seven-and-a-half minutes long, and it fits in everything from beautiful solos and guitar melodies to really stand out bass parts to blast beats galore.” – Skulls N Bones

“This song (The Wonder and Terror of Fortune) we’re presenting today includes guest contributions by Rafael Trujillo (ex-Obscura) and Ryan Strain (Chaos For The Masses). It’s a galloping high-voltage thrill-ride of pulse-pounding riffs and scintillating leads that swirl and soar. The roaring, screaming, and singing vocals are just as exhilarating as the music. Everything is on fire, channeling an unmistakable ebullience, which reaches its zenith in a spectacular extended guitar solo. The fast-punching grooves in the song are a match for the ecstatic energy of everything else. One listen, and you can tell why this track was chosen as the album closer — it sends the listener out on an enormous high.” – No Clean Singing

“Buried Realm sound a whole lot like what you’d expect given the bands whose guest musicians Dummer tapped for the project: aggressive, catchy, Sweden-inspired melodic death metal. If you like all the bands name-checked above, you’re sure to like this one. It’s incredibly well-done and expertly crafted.” – MetalSucks (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

“On this album he proves himself to be some kind of instrumental wizard, and a vocal chameleon as well. But he has also surrounded himself with an array of guests that shines like a metal constellation in the night sky.” – No Clean Singing (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

“Given that The Ichor Carcinoma has so many guests, it stands to reason that it has a diverse sound, ranging from hyper-speed solos, breakdowns, a mixture of screams and clean singing and more, but at the end of the day, it can be classified as an impressive melodic death metal debut.” – Decibel Magazine (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

“From the very beginning of this track (Apeiron II: Global Dreamer), the riffing is here to cut your limbs ready to cook a nice melodic stew. Are you with me? Shades of Scar Symmetry, At the Gates, Hypocrisy, early Nightrage, late Soilwork and a fine slice of that machine gun style technical death metal drumming are found here. A delicious plate that I know will please a good bunch of my fellow seekers of melodic metal.” – Toilet  Ov Hell (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

”Buried Realm’s debut album The Ichor Carcinoma, which sees the next chapter in the soul key band member Josh Dummer’s, emotionally charged dark twisted vision come to life in the form of a hard hitting, electrifyingly intense experience for fans of Heavy Metal to experience and enjoy.” – Noizze UK (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

“There’s plenty of ear-candy to be found on The Ichor Carcinoma – be it in the form of aggressive melodeath riffing, soaring leads, or sheer vocal variety. While it doesn’t stray far outside of the genre realms, there’s only a handful of releases that one can think of in recent memory that execute it with this much passion and finesse. With its time of release, one hopes that the album doesn’t become lost in the mix of fall juggernauts. This is too strong to be overlooked.” – Dead Rhetoric (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

“There is more than enough content to shred your ears within The Ichor Carcinoma and more than enough to keep you listening over and over again, and that is just what this release does.” – Cadaver Garden (Review – The Ichor Carcinoma 2017)

A true visionary is a rare thing, but such a man is Josh Dummer exemplified in his solo studio project Buried Realm. Influenced by personal experience and executed through metaphors, the progressive and heavy metal leaves room for interpretation and paints an interesting picture for listeners.

Following up on his long time idea of releasing a solo album, he seized the chance with his first offering “Ichor Carcinoma”. Released in 2017 it features guests such as Christopher Amott (Arch Enemy, Armageddon), Peter Wichers (Soilwork), Teemu Mäntysaari (Wintersun) and Travis Montgomery (Threat Signal, Jeff Loomis band).

Inspired by Opeth, Kreator, Old Man’s Child, Symphony X (and tons of old Hair Metal!), Dummer is a man who is not afraid to gaze into the abyss for music and lyrical inspiration. He describes Buried Realm’s music as ‘fierce, cutting, technical, melodic, and memorable.’ The studio project represents a hidden dimension within himself where the ‘buried disputes’ of his life are confronted only through music; where he can express musical ideas without compromising.

The next chapter in Dummer’s journey is 2020’s “Embodiment of the Divine” due out July 24th and while it is parallel to the first, both musically and lyrically, it is a forward step in a sojourn that will be continuing.

Discography:
2020 – Embodiment of the Divine
2017 – The Ichor Carcinoma

Describe each song track by track

“The Burning Remnants”
The fastest and arguably darkest track on the album. Originally titled “The Burning Ritual” – releasing negativity through a burning ceremony of letters, pictures, etc.

“Overlord”
This song caries tons of leads and some of the more challenging guitar parts on the album. A message about looking forward, shedding skin, but being haunted by “dead skin” so to speak.

“Master Psychosis”
“Master Psychosis” is about exploring and trying to understand the dark side of one’s mind. How someone becomes trapped, engulfed by, or falls into an empowering feeling of darkness over and over. It isn’t a “societal norm” to accept or shed light on it for others to see. Most aren’t vulnerable enough to expose it, so we hide it.

“Scales of Queen Dragon”
About repeating patterns of those who feed you a false personality for acceptance.

“Silver Tongue”
“Silver Tongue” took the longest to piece together. Small bits of the song came to me over the course of writing the album. The song ended up filling out with a lot of subtle layers because of that.

“In the Shallow Light”
A continuation to the lyrical theme of “Scales of Queen Dragon”.

“Embodiment of the Divine”
This was the first song written after releasing ‘The Ichor Carcinoma‘. It ended up encompassing the sounds and overall message of the album, so it made sense as an album title, too.

“Infinite Mutation”
Infinite Mutation is the “epic” song of the album. Inspired by the way technology can easily change the identity of people and how we’re viewed.

“The Wonder and Terror of Fortune”
The album closer… Over the years, music has been a very important part of my life. It’s always been there for me in any situation, it became a lifestyle and many opportunities have come from it. For that I am grateful. With that comes the unfortunate part of losing sight of friendships, relationships, other opportunities, etc. These lyrics are about the interesting blend of excitement and sorrow that music brings to me, and the constant reminder of how I’ve had to choose what‘s most important at the time.
