Manuel Barbará Shares How To Play “The God Complex” w/ New Guitar Video

Playthrough Premiere via TechnicalMusicReview

New Album “Moonrise” Out Now!

New Jersey’s Manuel Barbará released his seven-track instrumental album “Moonrise” on March 19th. The full-length is the first introduction of heavy, ambient, and classically inspired progressive metal by Barbará who is the sole songwriter of this project.

Today, he shares more insight into the record with his latest guitar playthrough video for the track “The God Complex”, which is heavily inspired by guitar gods Jeff Loomis and Keith Merrow. The composition blends heavy guitars and tribal drum patterns with light cinematic and electronic elements. It is also the only piece on the album to have a true guitar solo.

Barbará adds:

“The drums for God Complex were tracked during a 7:00 pm to 5:00 am session nearly a month after we recorded the drums for the rest of the album. To this day, I don’t know how I managed to go to work to teach music theory the next day.”

The playthrough for “The God Complex” can be viewed via its premiere on TechnicalMusicReview HERE.

Barbará took up the guitar at the age of 16 and managed to successfully audition for Berklee at age 18. The debut album “Moonrise” is a unique piece of music, much of the writing was done during the very early days of his training in classical composition. For Barbará, this work is a journey through a series of sonic worlds and colors that he has carefully crafted. He comments on the album:

“This music has been part of my own little universe for so long, and I am beyond excited to share it with the world. The process of making the album has been an epic journey, a learning experience, and a trial by fire all wrapped into one and I am looking forward to bringing that journey to an audience, and into the future with the music that is to come.

The purpose of music for me, after all the craft and technique and study are done, is to draw the listeners in and allow them to experience totally new worlds. The details of those worlds will be up to each individual person, but I hope the audience will join me on this small adventure I’ve prepared.”

According to Barbará, these songs, so far, were only ever performed live once and are not likely to be performed again for some time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he makes an effort during his live performances to avoid the “musical statues” syndrome that plagues so many prog bands.

A fluid and extravagant progressive masterpiece, “Moonrise” awaits fans of Periphery, Tesseract, and Jeff Loomis.

Album stream and download available on 8stringalchemy.bandcamp.com, Apple Music, and Spotify.

“With its rhythmic elements and heavy riffs, Manuel Barbará’s debut album is in the purity of modern instrumental progressive metal. But his influences from classical composers add an interesting extra touch.”- Music Waves

“a spectacular showcase of the progressive qualities of Manuel Barbará.” – Games, Brains and A Headbanging Life

“without a doubt that we have a talented musician and composer in front of us. The approach is in large parts of the material progressive metal with the corresponding hardness and complexity… You can’t deny the band’s instrumental quality…” – Metal-Heads.de

“Manuel Barbará shines bright on Moonrise… this is a fascinating listen and it is easy to appreciate Manuel’s complex musical narrative… this deserves a listen as it does embody the prog metal ideal and as such, it’s a damn good album: think Tesseract or Periphery.” – RAMzine

“Unbelievable that Moonrise is the debut of a musical whiz kid. Manuel  Barbará  publishes an incredibly mature masterpiece, which not only pays homage to its role models Dream Theater , Keith Marrow or Periphery , but also presents a crisp progressive Djent Metal at eye level,” – Sound Magnet

So who is Phear? Well, turns out these Canadian’s have some history.

Patrick Mulock (Lead Vocals) had a 2 album stint with Metal blade Recording Artist’s Eidolon, with Glen and Shawn Drover, formerly from Megadeth. Prior to that, he fronted Canadian Band Rampage.

Pat Rogers (Guitars) was a member of the Toronto band Profaner, who won the 2016 Metal Battle Canada competition and came second at the worldwide event at the Wacken Open Air Festival.

Chris Boshis (Bass Guitar) Spent time in local Toronto Band Conflicted. He has also auditioned for Machine Head and Disturbed.

So, what’s next for Phear?

When I asked the band… “What’s next?”

The answer was clear for all of them………. EVERYTHING!!!!

BIGGER/ BETTER / LOUDER…. I asked them to define this answer seriously….

In a nutshell, they just want everybody out there to know who they are! They love what they do, and want all their fans to have a great time listening and watching them do it!

They treat every show as an event, a moment in time, a memory. They want to leave their mark!

The one thing I noticed about Phear, after spending some time with them, is they are extremely passionate and driven. They are always discussing and thinking of ways to entertain their fans. Phear’s first-ever cover was Iron Maiden’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”…….who does a 15-minute cover???? Phear does and it’s EPIC

To date, Phear has shared the stage with Udo Dirkschneider, The Dead Daisies, The Iron Maidens, Styper and had the pleasure of opening the pre-show (Side Stage) for IRON Maiden.

It is a very exciting time for Phear despite Covid 19. They have continued to work individually on new music and looking forward to hitting the live stage as soon as possible and showcasing their NEW material.

“We currently have 5 songs partially recorded with 5 more in the works for a new album.” We are planning on shooting 2 new videos for our new songs and have a live virtual concert planned for June……..1let the Chaos begin!

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 6, 2021

For fans of Emmure, Thy Art Is Murder, Fit For An Autopsy, Alpha Wolf

Florida’s Kill The Imposter Introduce Pure Chaotic Deathcore With Two Videos Off “The Violence Sessions”

New Album “The Violence Sessions” Out May 28th

Kill The Imposter is an in-your-face, no-holds-barred deathcore onslaught hailing from Orlando, USA. They have a new album coming out in May of 2021 and it promises violence, rage, and a monstrous barrage of breakdowns, screams, riffs, and blast beats.

“The Violence Sessions” is a seven-track album, and the third released from the band following “The Decimation” (2019), and “A Strain Of Agony” (2020). The upcoming offering is pure chaotic energy, something that current fans will recognize and new fans will revel in.

Already, Kill The Imposter has released two music videos for the tracks “Mace” and “Suffer Alone”. “Mace” is likely the only political song the band will ever write, but the takeaway of it is, think for yourselves. People, who have no allegiance to you, are not the people you should be listening to. “Suffer Alone” was written for vocalist Johnny Nobody’s ex-wife as he explains himself:

“I didn’t know a better way to describe the way I felt at my worst with her. I took the idea from the movie “300’ when Leonidas tells the traitor “I hope you live forever”.” He continues to share his thoughts on the full album, “we cannot wait for the fans to get their hands on it, the music is just getting tighter and more violent with each song. The more we work together the better these hits are turning out”

Violent and tight, Kill The Imposter is the remedy for a hard day or the encouragement you need at the gym, they are recommended for fans of Hatebreed, Alpha Wolf, and Dealer.

About:
Kill The Imposter is an Orlando, USA-based deathcore band that was formed in late 2018. Pulling musical inspiration from everywhere, the intention of this four-piece band is to make you move in any capacity you see fit.

Coming from local and national bands, Kill The Imposter brings experience, drive, and mayhem, to the stage. The quartet banded together over a shared love for heavy and violent music, after sharing the stage for one song they knew they had something special, so they sat down together and within a week had 3 songs written and a video lined up. They haven’t stopped since that first sit down, and they won’t stop.

One of the founding members Danny Arrieta (guitar) is the primary music writer getting help with arrangement by Johnny Nobody (vocals). Nick Colvin (drums) carries the aggressive speed and heavy grooves with Wilson Bembry ( bass) definitely sharing and blending the thundering lows and technical playing between all of it.

Since they got together, Kill The Imposter has released “The Decimation” (2019), “A Strain Of Agony” (2020) and “The Violence Sessions” (2021). They have pummeled the stages of Central Florida Metal Fest and Tampa DeathFest and played alongside heavy hitters such as Nile and Terrorizer.

For fans of Septicflesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Wardruna, Nile, Cattle Decapitation, Dimmu Borgir

XAEL’s Music Video “The Waste of Dreadrift” Continues The Exploration of Their Sci-Fi Metal Fictional World

New Album “Bloodtide Rising” Out Now!
XAEL (ft. members of Nile, The Reticent, Rapheumets Well)

Enter if you dare “The Waste of Dreadrift”, the latest music video from XAEL (ft. members of Nile, The Reticent, Rapheumets Well). The video is the next visual exploration into the fictional sci-fi world created by band founder and drummer Joshua “Nassaru” Ward for the band’s new album “Bloodtide Rising” released this past February via Pavement Entertainment.

Ward explains the album’s story in further detail:

“Imprisoned by the counsel of Tymeer in the waste of Dreadrift, Darmak and the Watchers of Xan were presented as an offering to the Sovereign Ruler of Vuul Athmar, Atara Avuniir where they were assimilated into her elite guard, the Suun Vir. Unforeseen, the Queen fell in love with Darmak and bore him a son, yet the queen harbors a dark secret, an anomaly that threatens the outer-worlds.”

To experience XAEL‘s planetary sci-fi adventure, please check out the music video for “The Waste of Dreadrift” via the band’s YouTube –  https://youtu.be/rZg7z8ek0PE.

Hailing from the American Carolinas, XAEL brings forth with them epic symphonic death metal like no other. Their new album entitled “Bloodtide Rising” is a concept record rooted in a science fiction universe that XAEL revolves all their music around. The extreme symphonic release chronicles the journey of a character named Darmak, an immortal who is trying to find purpose in a chaotic and complex multiverse.

XAEL was initially meant to be a personal project by drummer Joshua “Nassaru” Ward, however, when other musicians showed interest it evolved into a full-fledged project with each member contributing equally towards this current full length and the band’s first album “The Last Arbiter” (2018).

Fans of progressive and brutal metal along with sci-fi enthusiasts will take interest in what XAEL is doing. It’s different, and listeners can get lost in the complex multiverse that they have conceived. Epic and extreme, it is recommended for fans of Septicflesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, and Nile.

The album “Bloodtide Rising” is out now on the following platforms:
Apple Music, Amazon, Deezer, Tidal HERE.

About:
Xael, based out of the American Carolinas was formed in 2018. The band’s current line-up consists of Joshua Niemeyer, Daniel Presnell, Chris Hathcock (The Reticent), Brad Parris (Nile), and Joshua “Nassaru” Ward (Rapheumets Well). Xael combines elements of extreme metal with orchestrations and folk music to create soundscapes of the imagination.

Xael’s music focuses on the endeavors of its members in a science fantasy epic. From the wastelands of war-torn planets to the pits where the fallen gods dwell, Xael paints an odd and fantastic sci-fi world both musically and visually.

Discography:
2021 – Bloodtide Rising (Pavement Entertainment)
2018- The Last Arbiter (Test Your Metal Records)

Bloodtide Rising Concept:
Imprisoned by the counsel of Tymeer, led by the insidious entity Sen, Darmak “ cursed with a degrading immortality” and the Watchers of Xan were presented as an offering to the Sovereign Ruler and rare species collector, Atara Avuniir in exchange for military and economic support. Finding Favor with the Queen, the Watchers were integrated into her elite guard where they became renowned for their success.

Unforeseen, the Queen fell in love with Darkmak and she would bear to him a son.  Vuul Athmar along with the outer planets of the Eiasian-Rim prospered yet the queen harbors a dark secret, an anomaly that threatens the outer-worlds.

Touring history:
Though Xael is a new project, the members are no stranger to touring. Brad Parris, being the frontman and bass player for Nile embarks on yearly international tours. Along with Joshua Ward (who is the drum tech for George Kollias of Nile), they have toured most of Europe, Australia, India, South America, Russia, and Japan. Other members being from bands such as Rapheumets Well and The Reticent are all versed in national and international touring.

Sounds Like:  Septicflesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Wardruna, Nile, Cattle Decapitation, Heilung, Dimmu Borgir, Devin Townsend, Emperor, Augury

ANONYMUS Reunites w/ Band Founder Marco Calliari For Video Performance “Tierra” Off “La Bestia”
New Album “La Bestia” Out Now! via (Bam&Co Heavy) Winner of Two GAMIQ 2020 Awards “Metal Album of The Year”

Canadian thrash legends Anonymus have reunited with band founder Marco Calliari for a live-off-the-floor video performance of “Tierra” from the band’s latest 12th album and first Spanish release “La Bestia” (winner of two GAMIQ Awards). The track is sung in both Italian and Spanish.

Calliari‘s departure from Anonymus in 2003 was to pursue a solo career that has so far released three albums: Che la vita (2003), Mia dolce vita (2006), and Al faro est (2010).

The band comments on the video reunion:

“Marco was in the band for a long time, we were friends as young kids and during high school was when we decided to start Anonymus. We learned our skills together doing covers initially, then moved on pretty quickly to make our own songs. For us, it’s always a great pleasure to have him come in to sing and play with us here and there. He left the band to fulfill his career in another genre (worldbeat/ pop). He’s a hell of a performer and we remain on the best of terms with each other. So to have him come in and share some moments with us is very natural. We celebrate our past having him in this live performance, while on the other hand, we focus on the future on writing new material for our next release.“Tierra” is very special because it’s the only song that we wrote in both Italian and Spanish. This is a tribute to our families who had to make sacrifices in their lives and leave their families and countries behind for a better future and a new home. It strikes a chord when you see all these immigrants doing the same in Africa, South America, and the rest of the world. Our parents ended up having a nice story about their immigration, which is not the case for everybody. This song is a song about the newfound land.”

Watch “Tierra” on YouTube – https://youtu.be/V333tZVtf7Q

Anonymus‘ twelfth studio album “La Bestia” (Bam&Co Heavy) was released in June 2020. The album is the band’s first Spanish album that follows their discography of both French and English releases. Many metalheads and critics asked the most relevant question, why an album in Spanish? The answer… since Drummer Carlos Araya is Chilean-born, and Oscar (lead vocals and bass) and Dan Souto (guitars and backing vocals) are sons of Spanish immigrants, it was only inevitable to make a record in that language that 3/4 of the band is fluent in.

The tracks on “La Bestia” were produced mainly by guitarist Jef Fortin as well as Colin Richardson who also produced 1999’s ‘Instinct’ and Jean-Francois Dagenais (Kataklysm) who produced 2006’s ‘Chapter Chaos Begins’. The album also features the bilingual song “Violencia Versus Violence” with the participation of Carlos Maldos of Lethal Creation (MX) and Arno Dhenain Le Bourhis of Black Bomb A (FR) along with a second bilingual track “Tierra” with Marco Calliari singing in Italian.

“La Bestia” is available for stream and download on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer HERE. Vinyl HERE.

EPKAbout:

Anonymus is a Canadian thrash metal band that explodes on stage with each presence, that pulls you in with its passion and that yells at you with corrosive and violent texts that will not leave anyone indifferent.

Since their first release in 1994, Anonymus has made its mark on the Quebec music scene. From the beginning, the group has been well received while demonstrating its brutal sound and technique that has continually evolved over the years. Oscar Souto (vocals, bass) Daniel Souto (guitar, vocals) Carlos Araya (drums), Jef Fortin (guitar since 2006) and Marco Calliari (vocals, guitar from 1994 to 2006) have since widely traveled the roads of their country, participated in the deprivation of Mononc’Serge and continue today to ignite stages everywhere they go. These veterans of the metal scene continue to proudly carry the torch after 20 years of chaos and barbaric music.

Forever hungry for metal, everyone in Anonymus brings ideas to the table. Sometimes it is a whole song or just the beginnings of one, yet together the band works to create a full thrashy anthem from the pieces, working on it until it is complete. The music always comes first, and when the ambiance is formulated, the lyrics, which come from a personal place and from current events, can be added.

Unstoppable and indestructible, inspired by bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax; Anonymus is nothing short of the powerful, aggressive and technical thrash metal that they have been refining for decades exemplified on their impressive discography of both French and English releases, which includes: “Ni vu, ni connu” (1994); Stress (1996); Instinct (1999); Daemonium (2002); Academie du Massacre (2003); Chapter Chaos Begins (2006); Musique Barbare (2008); État Brute (2011); Envers et contre tous (2015); P.O.M.M.E (2017); Sacrifices (2019); and their first-ever Spanish album La Bestia (2020) due out June 12 via label Bam&co Heavy.

Today, Anonymus does not need a presentation. This institution of the Quebec metal industry has been offering for twenty-six years, a passion for dark notes and unrivaled power. The offer is still valid. With more than 1500 career shows under their belt, Anonymus is completely in their element when performing in front of fans, they offer only their absolute best ensuring the crowd is moving. Having shared the stage with metal great such as Anthrax, Cannibal Corpse, and Kataklysm at festivals such as Heavy Montreal, Montebello, and through international tours, they are no strangers to a wild show.

ANONYMUS FOLLOWS ITS PATH, AGAINST ALL ODDS!

– 30 –

“Anonymus mix together some of the best from Slayer and Lamb of God. Allowing for some of incredibly strong extreme metal on La Bestia. If you need any proof, tracks “Sobrevivir” and “Violencia Versus Violence” are easy stand outs for melding some spectacular sections and making the most of the band’s sound.” – Metal Injection

“a savage barrage of brutality from Anonymus, featuring break neck speed thrash that’s in your face and intense. 9/10” – Metal Gods TV

“La Bestia hits bluntly and brutishly. It certainly lives up to it’s name, the beast.” – Heavy Music Headquarters

“What a musical violence! Thrash lovers would do well to give this album of Spanish Canadians a listen.” – Arrow Lords of Metal

“Thrashy heavy stuff with a Sepultura-like groove and probably having the lyrics in Spanish help with the vibe… the catch? They’re from Quebec! ” – WORT 89.9 FM – Mosh Pit Radio (Madison, WI)

“The album has a very “bouncy” vibe that really gets the foot tapping and despite the album sounding overall angry, this anger comes off as fun. There’s no way in hell that anyone would stand still when the band plays anything on this album live. If you’re like me and usually more into the classic thrash sound and its close derivatives and feel like trying something else, La Bestia might just be what the doctor ordered.” – The Metal Crypt

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – April 5, 2021

For fans of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath

Saudi Arabian Proggers Songs of Petrichor New Music Video “Nomad”

Self-Titled Album Out November 2021 via Wall of Sound Records

L-R – Shaharyar Hamdani (Vocals, Guitar), Omair Soomro (Drums, Lyrics), Yousuf Masood (Guitar, Bass)

Progressive grunge rock trio Songs of Petrichor released their debut single “Nomad” this past March in preview to their self-titled album coming November 2021 via Sound of Wall Records.

Today, the band is sharing the music video for the track, shot in the desert sands of their home country of Saudi Arabia.

The video for “Nomad” can be viewed on YouTube – https://youtu.be/AAi-Y7CzIGA

A nostalgic, melancholic revival of influenced 70’s prog, 90’s grunge, and South Asian classical music, Songs of Petrichor has fused a refreshing sound from the Middle East. With all members of the band being multi-instrumentalists, the crafting of songs has always taken an interesting approach with each of them having mutual respect for each other’s instrumentation.

Admitting that they are first and foremost a live experience, Songs of Petrichor’s true chemistry comes to life when adding improvisation to their stage performance, but in the meantime, with lockdowns around the globe, they feel it is necessary to allow the public to enjoy this chapter of their sonic adventure until then.

Songs of Petrichor‘s goal with “Nomad” and the forthcoming record is to take listeners on a journey of rain-induced sentiment, strong emotions, and adoration for the classic yet modern love of rock. On “Nomad”, fans will hear SOP find their own voice while still demonstrating a unique and relatable sound.

“‘Nomad’ was inspired by our drummer Omair’s thoughts of not belonging anywhere and constantly moving on. The song is open to interpretation as either a narrative of a literal ‘nomad’ or as a metaphor of one whose journey is akin to that of a nomad. The song holds themes of not belonging to a single location, perseverance, moving on, pain, loss, vengeance and yet finds space for hope. It is an Oriental Grunge song with elements of Progressive Rock.”
adds the band.

Arkansas’ Pantheon unleashed their debut album “Age of Wolves” during July 2020 via Necrotic Records. Playing old-school blackened death thrash metal with groove elements, the band has quickly secured a diehard following, breaking the trends in their local Mid-South and Mid-West metal scenes.

The vinyl will also be available in North America via Necrotic Records. The vinyl features two exclusive bonus tracks “Arcane Oath” and the band’s cover of Black Sabbath’s “Hand of Doom”.

The band adds:
“Age of Wolves is an intricate merging of heavier, mid-paced poundage with the older, fast-paced death/thrash character. Its old school styles will feel familiar and nostalgic to veteran metal fans, but does it in such a way that it feels new and fresh.”

“This album is so diverse and so free of genres, “Age Of The Wolves” puts forth a collection of Death metal rooted riffs, sick thrashy grooves reminiscent of Amon Amarth and Dying Fetus’ style.“ -Wayne Ortiz of Blackened Promotions

“Age of Wolves” is an album with strong, fresh appeal, and even the die-hard late 80s early 90s death metal cultists should give this album a listen. It’s more of an extreme metal album, so give it a shot!!” – Soulgrinder Zine

“If in the ’80s, Geddy decided to shun the synthesizer and Alex became a disciple of Dave Mustaine instead of Midge Ure, Rush might have sounded something like this.  The album is 7 songs with one instrumental and 6 vocal tracks.  It is a rock record with bits of proggy stuff hidden inside.  The players are diverse and really complement each other and the overall vibe.” – The Wring

““Wring² Project Cipher comes with a heavy, classic rock feel, but there’s an epic, questing nature to tunes like Sorceress, Steelier and Dose that pushes The Wring beyond metal norms and into prog territory.” – Prog Magazine

“The extreme professionalism on display throughout this entire album, although a labour of love, is a true master class of musicianship performed by musicians who are truly at the top of their game, making the industry what it is today. The sheer attention to detail is a credit to each and every performer as they tailor their craft neatly and precisely throughout every track, with nothing less than perfect being the order of the day.” – Stargazer Music Magazine

“Overall, the entire album is laden with a rich tapestry of sound and lyrics, well thought out and carefully developed by founder member and visionary Don Dewulf, taking the listener on that perfect journey of thought, and is a credit to its makers gathering no dust in any collection. 10/10” – Stargazer Music Magazine

“Thanks to his renowned session musicians and original compositions, The Wring is a refreshing discovery that offers a personal reading of modern metal. 4/5” – Music Waves

“What sounds at first to be a straight-forward rock album, turns out to be so much more. It’s a tad short, but sometimes less is more. You can hear many influences in these tracks, some of them familiar, but The Wring have stamped their own identity all over it. This should keep you going for the time being but expect more from Don Dewulf with The Wring3 already in the recording stage!” – The Prog Space

“Dewulf’s guitar work shines throughout, at times reminiscent of Alex Lifeson in his prime, such as his powerful solo on ‘Steelier’ which soars above the raging musical maelstrom below. There’s even a funk-infused breakout on ‘Dose’, which is infectious with its driving hook. It’s an absorbing record, one that takes time to soak in, but several plays ensure that it’s burnt deep into the memory. When those end-of-year lists come round, ‘Wring² Project Cipher’ is likely to be pushing for a slot.” – The Razor’s Edge

“The Wring generally succeed at what they’re going for—Dewulf has produced a fun, catchy record. Particularly on the album’s middle section (“Cipher,” “Steelier” and “Dissension”), there’s some great songs with great riffs. If you’re after some new prog, you could do a lot worse than this album, and I found it quite hard to score.” – Angry Metal Guy

“The overall sound is something like the heavier side of Rush, with hooks and melodic elements smoothing out the guitar crunch, making this very accessible.” – The Progressive Aspect

“Coming out of nowhere with a completely experienced, well-produced, and polished debut record full of complex compositions and dynamics for vocals, guitar, bass, and drums is Sudbury’s newest best-kept secret: The Wring… I give this album a solid 63 out of the 67 moons of Jupiter, including all four Galilean moons.  Highly recommend it for fans Tool, Opeth, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, or if you listened to your dad’s records growing up.” – Kipp Grose, Asylum Club

==========================================

The album as a whole:
If in the 80’s, Geddy decided to shun the synthesizer and Alex became a disciple of Dave Mustaine instead of Midge Ure, Rush might have sounded like this. The album is 7 songs with one instrumental and 6 vocal tracks. It is a rock record with bits of proggy stuff hidden inside. The players are diverse and really complement each other and the overall vibe.

Track by track explained Don Dewulf  :
The Light – A very fun song to play. Lots of changes and riffs. This is one song where Marc totally took the vocals in his own direction.  I had a much heavier vision but he has a style that really works against the riffs and strange, shifting time signatures.

Sorceress – One of my favourite tracks. The riffs are quirky but really fit the mood. I had composed a very complicated bass part and when I gave it to Bryan Beller, he tossed it out and primarily mirrored the guitar with his bass lines.  While my ego was injured, it turns out he was 100% right… the bass totally drives the song. Marc also did a cool spoken-word part in the pre-chorus which was unexpected and totally fits!  A friend of mine, Steve Kraus wrote the lyrics for this song and they are fantastic.  One of the very few parts not composed by me.

Cipher – An instrumental track. I played this on a 7-string so there is a massive low end. The parts are short enough and musical enough to hold interest without vocals. I really like the bass and guitar solos here too. A combination homage to YYZ and March of the Fire Ants.  Jason Henrie played some killer bass on this track and created an awesome video also.

Steelier – This song started with the pre-chorus – a very jazzy progression in the spirit of Steely Dan. I named the rough early version “Steelier” in that context.  When the lyrics came later, the story is about perseverance and maintaining one’s wonder in the face of adversity so I thought the demo name was appropriate. The chorus is in an odd time, but fits perfectly, I love when that happens.

Dissension – A pretty straight-ahead rocker. I went for a Dio vibe with the lyrics… I could not tell you what Holy Diver is about but the lyrics are awesome.  I tried to capture some of that ‘strength in phrases’ approach. Of course, Triple 6 is a reference to the devil in all of us. Has a cool breakdown and a phenomenal guest solo from Jason Sadites.

Dose – Another fun song with a great chorus. Marc did an amazing job on this song.  Lots of little bits of odd time that add flavour and dynamics. Great bass lines and my Lifeson-esque solo. Most of the record is a 1981 Les Paul Custom through a Marshall amp.  In this song, I use a Strat which is very unusual for me.  I like the thin jangle and how it works in this song.

Touch – I love the main riff. It started life as a very Toolish part, but I found it a bit jarring so I added 3 to the 5 so Marc could sing in 4. Good chorus. Cool odd time breakdown and a neat little solo. The end is pure pretentiousness.  The main riff changes time signature 13x but the vocals and reprise of the intro riff smooth it out, so it all works.

==========================================

BAND STORY ANGLES / FUN FACTS:

  1.  I (Don Dewulf) am proud of my music.  I am proud of my affiliation with some of the great players of this generation. Music is the food of the soul and having Thomas Lang, Marc Bonilla or Bryan Beller say they enjoy playing my songs and then give me their serious attention and very best effort is beyond my dreams.
  2. Jason Henrie was supposed to track all of the bass parts on this record but personal commitments precluded that so he reached into his Social Media Rolodex and connected me with Bryan Beller and Stu Hamm as potential candidates to complete the bass tracking. I contacted them both.   Stu was interested, but unavailable due to other commitments. Bryan jumped on it and we connected instantly.  I messaged Stu back to let him know and he told me he could now do the project. I’d already committed to Bryan so I had to turn down Stu Hamm!! How crazy is that?
  3.  I always wanted The Wring to be a ‘band’ with equal input and collective focus.  It never turned out that way.  I wrote everything, decided everything, paid for everything. It was a somewhat lonely place. Then I met Mikael Akerfeldt. I am a very big Opeth fan. I asked him many questions about his songwriting and band process. He told me that he does everything, writes everything and the guys just learn what he gives them. He said he even taps out the drums on a machine for Axe.  So really, Mike is Opeth and Opeth is Mike. I do the same. So, on a much, much, much smaller scale, I realized that I am the Wring.  And it was good.
  4.  The Wring opened for Diamond Head in 2018. When I walked into the venue, I immediately spotted Brian Tatler on the stage. I had been a fan since the ’80s and it was such a surreal feeling knowing we would share a stage with them.  I just shook his hand. Couldn’t even speak. We played a great set and I gave one of our CDs to Brian’s wife after the show. That gig was an honour for me but it also put the world into perspective when you have legends like Diamond Head playing these club gigs while horrible pop garbage sells trillions.
  5.  The Wring opened a show in Ottawa. The Dead Daisies and Hookers & Blow were the main acts with 4 bands on the bill. The place was full for our set and the crowd was awesome. I remember two things about that show, the sound man let us play for 40 minutes instead of 30 and we were the only band that didn’t play any cover songs.

==========================================

About:

The Wring is a progressive rock project created in 2015 by guitarist Don Dewulf who had compiled a large inventory of compositions that he had fully demoed, just needing players to turn the demos into songs.  The project started out in a band format with local musicians and they released a debut self-titled album in 2017.

After a series of live dates sharing stages with Anvil, Diamond Head, and Dead Daisies, the band dissolved.  A chance conversation with Mikael Akerfeldt inspired Dewulf to forge ahead with new material, re-connecting with bassist Jason Henrie and engaging world-renowned musicians to perform, bringing the new songs to another level.

The result of that was “The Wring 2 – Project Cipher” releasing in 2021, which will feature album guests Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats, Dethklok, Steve Vai), Thomas Lang (Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Williams), Jason Henrie, and Jason Sadites.

Always starting with a riff, Dewulf builds compositions that showcase his signature blend of classic heavy rock meets prog. The lyrics come after the music is done and are usually a targeted response to an interaction that has sparked anger. The translation of emotion into words is subtle, often belying the more aggressive undertones. Expect more from Dewulf with The Wring3 already in the recording stage!
