Track by Track explained:

1. “Levitations” starts the album on a rather positive note, being rather playful, upbeat and catchy. The warm lyrics accompany it until they take a drastic and stark turn towards chaos. The music follows as it becomes increasingly dark, aggressive and violent, before elevating once more to end the song with an aura of hope. The final notes close the song with a sense that the journey has only just begun.

The lyrics also incorporate themes of astral projection; where a sleeper’s soul leaves their body and can see it from above, and not only can dream, but enter the dreams of others. Hence the sudden shift in mood in the lyrics (dreams are often the same), and the title “Levitations.”
 
2. “Reverence Of Being” conveys both a sense of struggle and of overcoming adversity – both physically and within – while being paired with a sense of hope. While not a direct reference, it could be looked at similarly to the Nietzsche quote ‘to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering,’ and both of those aspects being a part of you and are worth revering. This is shown in the music too, through moments that are both dark and foreboding, and warm and uplifting, leaving you with the conclusion that despite all that’s happening, the only thing you can do is persevere. With the inclusion of orchestrations, acoustic guitar passages, both tribal and blast beat drumming, dark atmospheres, a melodic climax and a soaring ending, Reverence Of Being is a representation of nearly everything that Vela Pulsar embodies as a band.

3. “A Refuge Impassable” is the most desperate song on the album, further bringing in themes of betrayal and hopelessness. There’s a constant element of searching – searching within another, searching within oneself, searching within one’s surroundings and past experiences. A bleak lyric, the protagonist never finds that refuge as it remains out of reach. She opens the song singing sorrowfully over somber acoustic guitars before the rest of the band breaks in with a mournful fusion of post-metal and black metal. As orchestrations return, the album’s story reveals its true ending with tragic chords, tribal drumming and call-and-response singing and screaming before unleashing a final bout of fury from every member of the band. As lamenting acoustic guitars draws the album to a close, she closes her eyes for the last time and another world awaits her now.

3. “Memoirs Of Unbecoming” was a very challenging record for the band to complete, as part of the recording took place during the COVID-19 pandemic which posed difficulties with the various ways it affected their lives.

With members residing in both Toronto, ON and Portland, OR, what originally started as a personal project between Ryan Mueller and Samantha Holmes became a more serious band when Samantha proposed doing an album. This led Ryan to recruit his brother (and fellow A Flock Named Murder bandmate) Cam to handle the drums. Thus, Vela Pulsar was born.

At over 30 minutes in length, the debut “Memoirs Of Unbecoming” deals with themes of hope, loss, courage, and perseverance in the wake of uncertainty. Stripping away all that we are and seeing what’s left, in the moments that shape us. This manifested into a swirling and emotional hybrid of symphonic and post-black metal, for fans of Alcest, Uada, Altar Of Plagues, Caladan Brood, Sojourner, Aquilus and Agalloch.

Australian speed metal Nothing Sacred will be marking their return to the mosh pit with their new album “No Gods” set for release via Rockshots Records on July 16th. The band unveiled the first single “Final Crime” this past May and are ready to share the next song “Stoner” with a music video in preview to the full length.

“This is a very different track for Nothing Sacred, which to us made it all the better. We did debate on a name for it. We originally called it Stoner when we only had the music. The name was only meant to be a placeholder till another one came along. That obviously didn’t end up happening, plus the name Stoner just suits it. It’s a song about a love-hate battle with anything that eventually leads to the destruction of both. It kinda morphed into a bunch of cool lines and a lot of ooo’s and aaaah’s.” adds the band.

Conceived in Melbourne in 1983, Nothing Sacred went on hiatus for two decades. During the 80s, the thrash/speed metal band unleashed their EP “Deathwish”, which catapulted them as one of the most sought-after pit makers with the record’s title track becoming a classic within the Australian metal scene. Three years later in 1988, Nothing Sacred unleashed the full-length entitled “Let Us Prey” on Cleopatra Records. Unfortunately a year after that LP’s release, the band disbanded in 1989. Lead guitarist Mark Woolley, bassist Karl Lean and drummer Sham went on to contribute to Hobbs’ Angel of Death‘s early work in the late 1980s. Woolley also appeared on Hobbs’ first self-titled album in 1988. Vocalist Mick Burnham later joined short-lived Melbourne band Seizure in 1993.

Although their tenure was short-lived, Nothing Sacred still remains an underground metal phenomenon in Australia. Songs from the Deathwish EP still get airplay on several Australian metal radio programs.

In 2012, Nothing Sacred performed a series 30th anniversary shows with Ross Percy (Ion Drive, Little House Godz) joining George Larin on guitar that included a support slot for the ex-Iron Maiden vocalists Paul Di’AnnoP/Blaze Bayley Australian tour. Despite the success, the band agreed not to continue and returned to retirement.

In 2015, the band decided to re-activate with a lineup of Sham, Karl Lean, George Larin, Ross Percy, and new vocalist Chris Stark. A slot on Melbourne’s Brewtality Metal Festival received positive reviews before the band embarked on a short tour of Japan, which inspired them to continue and lead the band to headline day one of the Steel Assassins Festival in Sydney.

Line-up changes again slowed the band, but with the addition of James Davies now on vocals and Stu Bedford on guitar, the band spent most of 2019 and 2020 writing and recording, what is now to be their first full length in over 30 years. Entitled “No Gods”, the record is Nothing Sacred‘s resurrection to the speed metal world. With a wealth of experience, a bucket load of riffs, and a renewed energy for one of Australia’s longest-running metal bands.

The band adds:

“We think our return with this new album will be received well. We’ve made a conscious effort to not be one-dimensional. We picked a cross-section of tracks we thought would make the album interesting. Though eight of the tracks are brand new, we decided to add two tracks ‘Final Crime’ and ‘Oracle’ we wrote for our 2nd album in the late 80’s, but never released.”

New Jersey’s Joseph Knecht is releasing his debut EP, a self-titled record that is a concise sample of the music he has been writing over the past couple of years. A well-versed musician, he plays both originals and covers in a wide range of genres, primarily focusing on progressive metal. His first single off this upcoming EP is “Overture (Excerpt From Halo Reach)”, a dramatic rendition of the theme from the classic video game. He explains why he chose the track:

“This is my cover of the Overture from the game Halo Reach. It’s a much more hard-hitting aggressive take on the original. It’s part of a song composed by Martin O’ Donnell. My idea was to take the original which was for orchestra and rearrange it for a prog metal band. The original is such a cool-sounding piece and every time I’d hear it I’d always imagine a metal version. When I got my 8 string and decided to make this EP, covering this song and taking advantage of the extended range of the instrument seemed like the perfect fit.”

The six-track EP takes a wide sampling of Knecht’s skills and presents them to the listener in a concise, yet varied audio experience. All instruments on “Knecht” were written and played by Knecht save for the drums, which are played by session musician Jason Stewart. The EP was mixed and mastered by Charles-Henry Volk.

Knecht is a lifelong musician, picking up piano at the age of five, since then he has learned to play guitar and bass and attended Berklee College of Music.

Predominantly prog with a hint of groove, “Knecht” is recommended for fans of Haken, Black Label Society, and Deep Purple.

About:
Joseph Knecht, from Tabernacle, New Jersey, USA, has been playing music since he was a small child. He started out with piano when he was five and picked up the guitar a year later. Bass came along in high school and he attended Berklee College of Music to further his music education.

Looking to share the music he was writing and playing, he created his instrumental solo project Knecht, where he plays everything from classic rock to more modern progressive metal. He performs originals and covers as well as teaches private guitar lessons.

With influences rooted mainly in progressive and groove metal, he replaces vocals with sweeping, complex guitar melodies that are written like vocal melodies. A typical song starts with the rhythm, for him the rhythm guitars by themselves should be interesting and be able to garner attention through the piece. While he is doing this, he is thinking about what he might want the other instruments to be doing as well as keyboard sounds if there will be keyboards. For the drums, he will program a track for writing and recording purposes, but ultimately leaves it wide open for Jason Stewart.

Knecht’s debut self-titled EP is available on July 16, 2021. It features Jason Stewart on drums and was mixed and mastered by Charles-Henry Volk.

Rebel Priest is a no-nonsense, real-deal rock n’ roll band composed of three seasoned musicians who have been making their way through the Western Canadian rock n roll scene for years. “We had a batch of headbangers and a few didn’t make it, but sometimes songs just need other means to come out. We wanted to set the tone for each one on this EP as opposed to a full-length concept album. Each one is a juggernaut on their own and will stand strong without having to be bound to the others… and as for more music … oh Lemmy tell ya! We aren’t slowing down, we are gonna have stuff coming at ya throughout the rest of the year, LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN!” adds Jayme Black (vocals/bassist).

Italian symphonic metallers Eternal Silence will be releasing their new album “Timegate Anathema” on October 8, 2021 via Rockhots Records. Recorded at The Groove Factory (Udine, Italy) and Line/Out Studio (Milano, Italy) with mixing and mastering by Michele Guaitoli (Visions of Atlantis, Temperance, Kaledon), the full length will feature ten tracks of symphonic and power prog metal plus will see the band introduce new elements and experimentation into their sound. The album goes from power metal songs like “The Way Of Time” and “My Soul Sad Until Death” to heavy and dark ones like “Rain and Red Death Masquerade”, passing through the catchy melodies of tracks like “Glide In The Air” and acoustic moments on “Lonely and Firefly”. The main theme that inspired the record is the concept of time.

“It has been a long time since our last full length was released, we took our time to make the best songs possible and then the pandemic broke in and forced us to stop and wait for the right time to publish it. Formed in Varese, Italy in 2008, Eternal Silence combines powerful guitar riffs, a thunderous rhythmic section, catchy melodies, and bombastic orchestral tracks with the support of two vocalists, Marika Vanni and guitarist Alberto Cassina sharing the front stage. The band’s current line-up is completed by Alessio Sessa (bass), Andrea Zannin (drums) and Enzo Criscuolo (guitarist).

Since their formation, the band has unleashed three albums and two EPs. 2020’s “Renegades” (EP), 2018’s “Metamorphosis” (EP), and 2017’s “Mastermind Tyranny” were released on Sliptrick Records, and their earlier full-lengths “Raw Poetry” (2013) and “Chasing Chimera” (2015) were released on Underground Symphony Records.

Over the years, the band has been a consistent touring presence in Europe, performing in Germany, Switzerland, France, Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Italy, and Hungary along with being support for bands such as Temperance, Therion, Haggard, Sound Storm, Blackoustic (Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius) and Jani Liimatainen (Insomnium)).

Ottawa’s Deformatory Announce Sonically Relentless Death Metal Experience With “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon”

New Album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon” Out September 3, 2021

Deformatory has been a maelstrom of devastation since 2010, assaulting all in their wake with relentless sonic brutality. This year they are adding to their punishing catalogue with their third album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon”, which was mixed and mastered by Topon Das (Fuck the Facts) from Apartment 2 Recording along with the artwork done by Paul Gerrard, who is a movie concept designer known for his imagery on Wrath of the Titans, Hellraiser: Origins and Hellboy.

In anticipation of what is sure to be one of the heaviest tech death albums of the year, Deformatory are luring listeners in with the first single “In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign”, which can be heard via its premiere on Bravewords HERE. 

This is the third full-length album for Deformatory, following the 2011 EP “A Prelude Of…”; the 2013 full-length “In The Wake of Pestilence” and the 2016 full-length “Malediction”. The nine-track album is divided into three chapters, of which “In The Embervoid Where Dead Stars Reign” is the third song in the second chapter. 

Deformatory explains the album’s concept and how the single fits in:

“In our previous album “Malediction”, we explored the truth about Lucifer, who was an angel possessed by a far greater evil entity named Savael. We dove into his awakening and consequences for mankind. Our newest album reveals that Savael was but a mere droid in a complex hierarchy of vile entities, known as The Ce’naxors from a planet called Cyru’xil, whose Grand Arkitekt has an insatiable thirst for destroying life stars.

The single is about the aftermath of planetary consumption and its effect on the multiverse. How death and destruction breed new forms of life, including some unintended consequences for Cyru’xil.”

This massively complex and intriguing album is just the tip of the iceberg for the brutal Ottawa duo. Fans of Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, and Origin should take note.

The album “Inversion of the Unseen Horizon” will be released on September 3, 2021.

Deformatory is a death metal band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Forming in 2010, they set out to create an extreme sound, fusing together classic influences (Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, etc.) and their love for modern tech death.
