Revealing to the world their latest epic “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying)” at the end of this November, Italian gothic doomsters Shores of Null are giving fans a visual experience of their 38-minute single-track concept album that takes listeners through the stages of grief. The video explores the band’s dark opus with many special guests, including two doom-titans, Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow The Sun) and Thomas A.G. Jensen (Saturnus) along with the angelic voice of Elisabetta Marchetti (Inno). The band also presents an even more diverse and eclectic sound on the album thanks to the addition of piano and violin.

Shores Of Null can be overwhelmingly heavy and soothing at the same time, trading off between gothic-doom vibes and blackened aggression. Their music stands out for its melancholic yet majestic vibe, made of choral-like guitar textures exploiting their full range, sustained by a powerful rhythmic section and punctuated by a refined brew of clean and growled vocals, with a large use of vocal harmonies, which have become one of the band’s trademark through the years.

Shores Of Null is a Rome-based metal band, an unwavering presence within the metal underground since their musical outset in 2013. They have churned out two impressive records: the melodic and somber  “Quiescence” (Candlelight, 2014) and the darker and more complex “Black Drapes For Tomorrow” (Candlelight/Spinefarm, 2017), both of which were highly praised by the worldwide music press.

Shores of Null stands out from its contemporaries with its ability to blend seemingly disparate elements and their ability to sound overwhelmingly heavy and soothing at the same time. Blackened aggression stands alongside gothic-doom sections without either sounding out of place. Shores Of Null’s third work, “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying),” is expected to be released in November 2020 via Spikerot Records, continuing to prove the band’s willingness to go off the beaten path and create their ultimate doom manifesto, a 38 minute-long suite emphasizing their heavier, slower and dramatic side, inspired by the five stages of grief formulated by the Swiss-American psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. After being silent for nearly a decade, Montreal’s Synastry unleashed their new EP “Civilization’s Coma” this past November. The band made a name for themselves on the Quebec and Ontario tour circuits in the early 2000s along with their releases Pallets Of My New World (2006) (EP) and Blind Eyes Bleed (2008) (LP). In 2012, the band went dormant, where they remained until 2020 remerging from the shadows.

Today the band is sharing their lyric video for their new EP’s title track, which can be viewed HERE.

The band adds:

“The title track of the EP is a dissonant groove fest that gets into you and doesn’t let go. Everything is super heavy yet infectious. Vocals have the longest continuous scream by James Aniston doing a 22 second inhale scream starting at 2:34. The lyrics are about how civilization is on autopilot, consideration, and compassion is out the window for everyone, yet we all share the suffering for it, but choose to do nothing.”

With newfound vigor, “Civilization’s Coma” is filled with heavy groovy modern metal that will be familiar to existing fans of the band while encouraging new listeners to embrace them. This reintroduction will give metalheads a taste of what’s to come while being able to stand on its own merit. This EP is just the start for Synastry who hopes they can bring their energetic live shows back to crowds far and wide post Covid times.

Recommended for anyone who enjoys groove and melodic metal, especially those with an existing fondness for Within The Ruins, and Fear Factory.

It takes courage for a band to integrate such distinct thrash, death, and industrial influences into a catchy yet multilayered approach as do Montreal’s Synastry.

Each metal listener desires something different and thus a band exists for every taste. Inspired to a certain point by melodic, futuristic death thrash, Synastry binds to these influences a threatening mid-paced groove, atmospheric textures, and the unmistakable gruff and mature vocals of James Aniston. Flanked by guitarist Paul Iverson and bassist Gary Vee, and backed up by the thunderous Kay Kessler, Synastry is a crushing wall of well thought out and meticulously written metal. Lyrics come from Aniston’s impression of the world and his experiences in it which are layered with the collaborative music that all band members contribute to.

Started originally in the early 00s, the Montreal band took the underground scene by storm, they climbed the Myspace ranks, toured the regions, and released “Pallets Of My New World” (2006) (EP) and Blind Eyes Bleed (2008) (LP). In 2012, the band went dormant, where they remained until 2020.

The socially conscious band awoke amidst the widespread uncertainty that swept the globe, with a mission to explore humanity, the singularity, and morality. “This new song (Dead To Me) is a short, sharp kick to the head — and it does kick like a furious mule, albeit a massive and mechanized one. The music is fast and ferocious, loaded with pulse-rifle riffs and hammering drums, blaring chords and squirming arpeggios, booming bass and a mix of serrated-edge growls and incendiary screams. The music is heavy-grooved, with a bit of a start-stop quality that hints at industrial influences to go along with the death/thrashing momentum, and also effectively creates an atmosphere of menace and mayhem. A sizzling cauldron of scatter-brained prog-metal insanity helmed by guitarist/vocalist Eric Thorfinnson, Toronto’s Autocatalytica unleashed their latest album “Powerclashing Maximalism” this past October. The LP is the band’s third and it explores all corners of Autocatalytica’s sound in a tight 36-minute runtime over eight tracks. A more mature listen, the full length continues the expressive outlet for Thorfinnson’s abstract angst and penchant for everything over the top. Thorfinnson has always drawn inspiration from a vast collage of different artists resulting in a sound that is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions. For fans of Devin Townsend, Meshuggah, and Protest The Hero, Autocatalytica‘s new album “Powerclashing Maximalism” is one for creative loving prog fans.

Autocatalytica was formed as a solo project in 2009. From The Dillinger Escape Plan to The Mars Volta, to Bjork, to Devin Townsend, to 20th-century composer Bela Bartok, Autocatalytica‘s sound is sure to surprise and intrigue listeners of all persuasions.

Upon moving to Boston to study at Berklee in 2010, Thorfinnson recruited guitarist Erik Sorensen, Drummer Emmett Ceglia, and bassist Jon Anderson to flesh out Autocatalytica’s line-up. Over the next few years the band played its first shows and in April of 2012 released their debut EP “Horror Vacui”.

The group relocated to Brooklyn in the fall of 2012 and immediately began to rehearse and write a full-length record. In June 2013 the group began recording its eponymous LP, while continually playing shows along the east coast of the US. They released their Debut LP “Autocatalytica” in June 2014, and continued performing shows in and around Brooklyn, all the while furiously composing a follow-up record.

In early 2015, Thorfinnson found out he was going to have to move back to his native Toronto, ON, but despite this, the band decided to finish writing and recording the songs for their follow-up LP. In October 2015, tragedy struck the group when Guitarist Erik Sorensen suddenly passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. Despite reeling from this massive trauma and coming to terms with Thorfinnson’s impending relocation, the group finished tracking drums to their next LP, and played their final show as a Brooklyn-based incarnation on Nov. 21st, 2015.

Thorfinnson spent most of 2016 toiling away at the tracking and mixing of this next record at home in his native Oakville, Ontario, and on December 9th, 2016 the group released the LP “Vicissitudes”, a 16-track maximalist genre-gauntlet of sporadic insanity.

Over the next few years, Thorfinnson spent most of his time on other projects, as the future of Autocatalytica remained uncertain. In 2018, he decided there was still more music to be had from Autocatalytica, and teamed up with his friend and drummer Neilroy Miranda (of local Jazz-math stalwarts “Dog Drive Mantis”) to rehearse and record a new album. The idea for this record was to be a much more collaborative effort than previous releases that had seen Thorfinnson handing all vocal and most guitar duties. The record “Powerclashing Maximalism” features a smattering of collaborators including Parliament Owls / Telomere’s Devlin Flynn, Northern Heirs’ Scott Carruthers, and Plethora’s Gary Walsh to name a few. While at this time Autocatalytica exists solely as a recording project, but no one knows what the future holds!

Calgary, Canada’s progressive prog Red Cain have launched the pre-order for their new album “Kindred: Act II” set for digital release on January 22, 2021. The CD physical release will be done by Sliptrick Records at a later date in the new year. The upcoming full length continues and ends the band’s storytelling of their Kindred saga.

Described as a vehicle of “Melancholy and Rage” and born out of the emerging music scene of Alberta, Canada, 2017 YYC Awards Metal Recording of the Year winner Red Cain is a power/progressive metal project with Russian roots. With intricate songwriting, a heavy yet melodic feel reminiscent of progressive acts, and elements of Slavic myth and Russian paganism in the storytelling tradition of the cult of Veles, Red Cain champion a fluid, dynamic, and unique musical style centered around telling dark, conceptual Faustian sagas and constructing those into an unforgettable live experience.

Stated by frontman Evgeniy Zayarny as wanting to bring back the “Devil’s music” mysticism all too often missing in modern metal acts, Red Cain delivers flair, groove, and an intricate, lethal edge in their music. Listeners might well pick out elements reminiscent of such luminary acts as Kamelot, Symphony X, Tesseract, Amaranthe, Alter Bridge – whipped into a venomous new shape. Without Mercy‘s new album “Seismic” is distributed by Bloodblast Distribution (powered by Nuclear Blast) and follows the band’s 2016 EP “Moucchido”. The vast majority of the material for “Seismic” was written and rewritten multiple times over the past four years. Honed and tightened over tours and live performances, Without Mercy were unwilling to place “filler” to enhance anything. They came at this album with the best of everything they had after their inspirations were doing the same. The band shares their thoughts on the full length:

“We are beyond stoked to have our new album “Seismic” see the light of day. This album represents 4 years of solid work ethic and unwillingness to compromise even in the slightest. Cell Press Drummer Posts Playthrough “Piss Police” From Their Noisy, Sludgy Debut Self-Titled EP

Cell Press drummer Mark McGee has posted a video of his battering hands with a playthrough for “Piss Police”, which is the opening track from the Montreal band’s debut EP released on November 27th.

“Piss Police” is bookended with one riff, which the band plays in different ways, as an intro and outro. The middle section was something their guitarist Sean Arsenian had demoed for a different project, but in the end, found it to be right at home with Cell Press. The bridge is a much noisier take on a Jesus Lizard type of riff.

Cell Press has no one metal genre label to them as they are a concoction of grindcore, noise, sludge, extreme metal, along with anything and everything the band feels like creating.

The eclectic ep may not be metal enough or noise-rock enough or sludge enough for some, but Cell Press gets bored really fast and the result is serious channel surfing taking advantage of a wide variety of influences. With this release, they have gone all out to wrap their ideas up in a burlap sack, tied with razor wire. As the band says in their own words:

“This EP sorta sums up what we’re about at this particular moment. Genre people might not be satisfied with our lack of adherence to any one sound for too long, but we didn’t make these songs for those sort of people.”This ep is designed as a broad introduction to the band, and new listeners will hopefully anticipate what else is coming down the pipe in the future. It upholds the high standards Cell Press sets for themselves and each song is quite different from the others.

Super loud and aggressive, Cell Press is a sort of hybridized amalgamation of influences, and most recommended for fans of Jesus Lizard, Converge, and Botch.

Cell Press are a Montreal-based band that formed in 2019. They play a sort of burly noise-rock that leans more on the hardcore and metal side of the swamp. They took their name from the 2001 Russian prison documentary “The Mark Of Cain”. The brutal humanity of that film is reflected in the music… on the surface, it’s raw and punishing but there are complexities

and nuances revealed once the surface noise has been embraced. Members have played in a myriad of punk, metal, and hardcore bands such as The Great Sabatini, Biipiigwan, I Hate Sally, The Chariot, Animal Ethics, Architect, Swarm Of Spheres, and Angles. Belgian melodic rockers Cellar Twins unleashed their compelling full length “Duality”. Not only was it independently released, but also supported by their fans with a crowdfunding campaign. Garnering rave reviews and a strong following, the record caught the attention of Rockshots Records for a re-release this coming January 29, 2021.
