Sol Negate Introduces Themselves With Visionary Progressive Death Album “On the Verge of Dreaming Again”

Sol Negate emerged from the mind of Edoardo Curatolo in Seattle, USA. He had the intention to compose music in a classical manner, but with modern guitars/drums as part of the orchestral ensemble. He wanted to “paint” using the palette that extreme metal offers without necessarily writing traditional metal songs. With the aid of drummer Sebastian Lanser (ex-Obscura, Juvaliant, Obsidious) finalizing drum parts and making them his own along with vocalist Riley McShane (Continuum, ex-Allegaeon) taking on the concept to add his unique lyrics and vocal parts, the result transformed into the debut album “On the Verge of Dreaming Again”, which challenges the boundaries of progressive death metal. Curatolo explains what’s in store:

“It explores the journey of the mind as one approaches death, reliving moments of life flashing before their eyes and experiencing the fall into the unknown. Each track on the album represents a passage of time, reflecting how seemingly insignificant experiences can leave lasting imprints and how perceptions of events can continue to haunt us even in our final moments.”

The album, “On the Verge of Dreaming Again,” is more than just a collection of tracks; it is a carefully crafted concept album, centered around the themes of death and dreams, that invites listeners to embark on a profound musical journey. Best experienced from start to finish, with headphones on, late in the evening, the album offers a deeply personal experience that evolves with each listen.

The progressive side of this endeavor was about making the music both fun and interesting while concealing the complexity of the composition. Those who appreciate ‘crazy’ time signatures, unconventional song structures, and intricate approaches, will discover them within the music, but it won’t feel like a gimmick. “On the Verge of Dreaming Again” is symphonic and progressive without sacrificing being heavy. It is recommended listening for fans of Fleshgod Apocalypse, Dream Theater, and Obscura.

Dissona is a progressive metal band based out of Chicago, USA. Since becoming active in 2006, they have become known for their diverse, imaginative sound and powerfully expressive performances. They take a dramatic approach with their music, creating robust yet intricate compositions with thought-provoking, often abstract lyrical content. Their latest work is a three-track EP “Dreadfully Distinct” that takes a look at three Blade Runner characters, brought to life through meticulously crafted, deeply cinematic progressive metal. The first single “The Prodigal Son” focuses on the inception and development of Roy Batty, the so-called antagonist from the original Blade Runner film. The band explains further:

The track tensely opens with a newscast highlighting the release of the Nexus 6, Eldon Tyrell’s newest and most advanced replicant series to date. The band enters with an exciting instrumental section as Roy’s journey unfolds. As the song progresses, we experience an astonishing and awe-inspiring instrumental section that paints the delicate “C beams” Roy pleasantly describes witnessing. The situation turns, however, as new energies enter his mind. A four-year lifespan is simply not enough for him and he takes violent steps to return to Earth and confront his maker.”

The band remarks that for this EP, the 3 track landscape felt right. From there, they had several conversations about which stories/characters in the Blade Runner universe felt compelling enough to have their own song and that was that. Long-time fans are aware that their third full-length album has been in production for quite some time and those fans can rest easy knowing the entire album is recorded. Look for news on that early next year!

“The Prodigal Son” is presented in a music video showcasing the entire band and is recommended for fans of the Blade Runner movies as well as those who take an interest in Opeth, Persefone, and Ne Obliviscaris.

Motorjunkie, a stalwart in the North Carolina hard rock music scene announces the release of their latest video, “Cold Barrel”. Billy Varga, guitarist, wrote the song as a tribute to his stepfather, and to raise awareness of the rampant suicide problem that plagues the nation’s military veteran population.

“My stepfather was a U.S. Army veteran who took his own life a month before we entered the studio to begin recording the EP. I wrote the song in one afternoon as a bonus track, but it became the leading track on this EP. The video chronicles the events that transpired the afternoon my stepfather made the fateful decision that ended his life. If we can help save just one life through this song and video, we will have done our job.”

We provide resources at the end of the video for those struggling with depression or dark thoughts.

Born out of the southern biker scene, Motorjunkie is popular among rock fans, motorcycle enthusiasts, and military members. A fresh alternative to both the straight blues and the heavy metal scenes, Motorjunkie combines the best of both genres. In the 2000s their music was a bit heavier and bordered on full-out metal but has since evolved into a broader rock-centric vibe that appeals to a wider audience. There is no theme, costume, or flowery object standing in the way of Motorjunkie’s music.

Long Island, NY old school death metallers Pyrexia unleashed their 25th Anniversary edition of “System of The Animal” earlier this month. The revitalized album was recorded with Pyrexia‘s current band lineup that consists of Chris Basile (Guitar), Shaun Kennedy (Bass), Jim Beach (Vocals), and John Glassbrenner (Drums) at Chapel Sound on Long Island, NY, along with mixing and mastering done at Demigod Studios by Miguel Tereso.

Known as one of the American OG’s of brutality with their vigorous death metal and smackdown hardcore, they offer a refreshed sound of how “System of The Anaimal” was meant to be. Guitarist Chris Basile explains:

“The biggest thing over the past couple of albums is the jump in production and the main thing the band suffered from in the past was production value. The songs can be felt in the chest and the riffs can finally be heard with this newly recorded version of System of the Animal. I also felt it was ahead of its time in 1997. I don’t think a lot of people were ready for such a mix of Brutal Death Metal VS. Beatdown Hardcore. When people hear this material with the new production, combined with the fact that the music was written in the mid-90s. I think it puts Pyrexia in a whole new light for a lot of people. I think the songwriting is really going to stand out for listeners bored with bands that put out the same album over and over.”

Hitting the road this coming August for ten dates across the US East Coast with Cerebral Incubation (Unique Leader), Atoll (Unique Leader), Reeking Aura (Parasitic Records), Pyrexia wants those who know them and the next generation of pit brawlers to brace themselves for their new unforgiving music video “Day One”.

About:

Band formation: 1990 – present
Location: Long Island, New York

1987-1989: Chris Basile joins the band Mortuary along with Terrence Hobbs, Doug Cerrito, and Mike Smith, all of Suffocation. Together over 30 songs were written by the band and many of the songs and riffs written during this time appear on both Pyrexia and Suffocation’s early releases leading to many comparisons.

1990: Basile meets up with the four other original members Guy Marchais, Rob Shimonski, Daryl Wagner and Mike Andrejko, and Pyrexia is formed. They go on to release their 1991 demo Liturgy of Impurity and later the classic 1993 Full-length Sermon of Mockery, cementing their place in the anoles of Death Metal history……

Pyrexia continued to release one seminal release after another including their 1997 “System of the Animal”, and even teaming up with Trevor Peres of Obituary in 1999 to form the band “Catastrophic” which went on to release their debut album on Metal Blade records.

In 2007 the band signed with Unique Leader Records and began an extensive campaign of touring and performing both in America and overseas in support of the next three albums released under the UL moniker that continues today.

With the addition of Gravitas Entertainment and Management as full-time management for the band, the schedule and team in place for 2023 have the band set for new heights…..

And then there’s vocalist Jim Beach; the man’s voice sounds like Cookie Monster made love to a garbage disposal, it’s otherworldly. Rimouski’s Quebec’s Vortex is now streaming its third epic concept album set to aggressive and beautiful orchestral melodic death metal with hints of black metal. Each song in “The Future Remains In Oblivion” is one chapter in their well-written sci-fi tale and there is a build-up in intensity and emotion that goes along with the storyline and the lyrics as you traverse the album. They share their thoughts:

“This is an orchestral death metal album with plenty of heavy riffing and melodies, technical vocals, and epic soloing. Some of the songs are riff-oriented and some others had the orchestra and melodies written before the drums and the guitars. We wrote all the lyrics before the music to make sure that it would fit the feel and emotion of each song/part of the story. When we start writing a song, we know exactly what feeling and emotion we are aiming at, it’s a good way to push ourselves creatively and write thoughtful music.”

Those familiar with the previous albums will note that they were more on the ambient/dramatic side. The new album’s songs are still melodic/orchestral but much more aggressive and some of them have a black metal influence. Vortex’s goal was to create songs that would have a greater impact on their live shows, and these aggressive songs will work well live. They feel the album is a good combination of aggression/melody, and ugliness/beauty.

Creativity and storytelling are the key tenets of Vortex. Their masterful lyric writing is equally matched with their prowess in devising riffs, and orchestrations. They will transport the listener into a new world and are recommended for fans of Lorna Shore, Dimmu Borgir, and Fleshgod Apocalypse.

“It was the first one of the first songs we wrote for the album. Its first draft was recorded with just an electric guitar as a very basic demo, but it had most of the original riffs. The next demo version that was crafted at Tomer’s home studio was already in its final form, but it had had tweaks done to it and other parts and elements added as well. It is directly related to the concept of the album and the struggles of day-to-day life but not only the common ones, and is based on a fictional story Tomer had written. The main character, Alex, tries his best to recreate his past as a raging prophet that leads the weak, bruised, and innocent to follow his path but he doesn’t succeed this time so he crawls back to the demons that comfort him in his depression.”

The track starts off with a heavy groove intro, but it breaks once the verse enters with a drum and bass-like pattern demonstrating the duality of the song as the energy stretches back and forth. Containing some odd signature rhythms and polyrhythmic components it even leans into different genres becoming thought-provoking, alongside relatable, cathartic lyrics.

Montreal, Canada’s Dorea is a fresh metal band on the scene that features high energy, tightness, and precision, a clear, modern sound with both clean and harsh vocals, insane guitar solos, and crushing drums. They are eager to introduce themselves to the world with their debut single along with many others they have recorded since their inception. They have carefully chosen their forthcoming music to show listeners what they’re capable of and they deliver nothing less than catchy hooks, moving lyrics, and melodies that give way to bone-shaking riffs. The band’s first introduction “Hypnotic” is presented with a dark and gloomy music video, which complements the dark theme of the lyrics. The band shares their thoughts:

“This song speaks about a man that loses everything he has, reminiscing about his past life and searching for truth in answers he never found. The song has everything from ballads to ripping guitar solos and complex riffing. It’s a melting pot of styles. We hope the fans perceive the sound as something fresh & unique. We continue to write music because it is our passion and we want to leave behind a legacy and repertoire of timeless music.”

Devoted to making the songs as groovy, heavy, melodic, and catchy as possible while at the same time adding elements of virtuosity, Dorea’s goal is to entice listeners to sing along to the hooks and at the same time, appreciate the musicianship and technical aspects of each member’s individual performance.

Their music is colorful, rich in its diversity of styles, with even some pop elements that can be heard from time to time. “Hypnotic” was chosen as the debut single as it is the most accessible in terms of its diversity of listening ability. It takes the audience on a journey by creating complex structures with fluid transitions, but unexpected heaviness hits you right in the face.

Sunbeam Overdrive is a concussive and dynamic progressive metal outfit from the south of France. Hard at work since day one, back in 2019, they quickly released their first three-track EP and performed their very first show at the famous German Euroblast Festival later that year. Their plans for large-scale touring were put on hold with the pandemic, but gave them time to focus their energies on their recently released full-length “Diama”. The depth being their mash-up of genres is on full display in their new music video for the title track, which the band comments on:

“This is the first real track on the record –powerful, aggressive, catchy but also airy and progressive. The lyrics were inspired by an extremely intense, burning, sudden, ephemeral, and ultimately volcanic adventure. Volcanism is the metaphor spun throughout the text because it evokes fusion, lava flows, eruption, and therefore, in the background, carnal, erotic union; heat that burns, but that fertilizes afterward.”

In the context of the whole album, which isn’t intentionally a concept album, but turns out to be an initiatory journey in the form of trials, doubts, determination, dizziness, and vertigo, elements that are transcribed into eclectic psychedelic riffs, thundering drums, and versatile, cinematic vocal styles.

Sunbeam Overdrive will surprise listeners with their unexpected crossover of several styles ranging from 90s grunge to progressive metal to modern djent. The album was produced, and mixed by Tom Abrigan; mastered by Brett Caldas-Lima with album artwork done by Christophe Dessaigne.

Utah’s Chronic Trigger is an exuberant and unyielding death metal band that was formed in 2016 and since then they have made a point of showcasing their uncanny ability to blend melody and brutality into one frantic unit of technical hardcore and progressive metal precision. Through several independent, tumultuous tours they have perfected their professional performance and established themselves as a highly driven, unique brand. Known for their unique live shows and ridiculously entertaining and engaging content, they have a new video to delight viewers with, for their single “Word of Hate”, which features the dangers of living in their hometown and a wild assortment of vocal styles. Chronic Trigger’s lyrics come from the combined physical and emotional influences provided by vocalist Ryan Pigott.
