San Francisco Bay Area death/thrash metal force Absolute Darkness unleashes their first single, “Attritional Warfare”, marking the beginning of the rollout for their highly anticipated sophomore album, “Witness To A Dying World,” due out on October 23, 2026. The album also features a faithful, modernized tribute to Bay Area legends Vio‑lence with a cover of their classic track “World In A World.”

Formed in 2015, Absolute Darkness blends the ferocity of Death, Cannibal Corpse, and Amon Amarth with the thrash roots of Testament, Vio‑lence, and Exodus. Their sound is defined by aggressive riffs, layered harmonies, memorable solos, and socially conscious storytelling that confronts corruption, war, propaganda, addiction, homelessness, and the decay of modern society.

The first single sets the tone for the album’s thematic weight and musical intensity. Written collaboratively by the full lineup, “Attritional Warfare” showcases Absolute Darkness at their most focused and explosive, fast, sharp, and unrelenting.

The new record marks a major milestone for Absolute Darkness; it’s the first album written entirely by the current lineup from the ground up, with every member contributing meaningfully to the songwriting process. Musically, the album expands on the death/thrash foundation of their 2021 release “Failure Of State,” delivering aggressive riffs, fast, energetic structures, melodic guitar harmonies, layered solos, and story‑driven vocals. A standout moment on the album is Absolute Darkness’ tribute to Bay Area thrash icons Vio‑lence. Guitarist/vocalist Ron Dorn, who grew up attending their shows, approached the cover with deep respect, preserving the original’s raw energy while delivering vocals in his own death/thrash style. The band intentionally avoided a click track to maintain the natural tempo shifts of the original recording, resulting in a version that feels both nostalgic and freshly intense.

Lyrically, “Witness To A Dying World” explores unchecked power, propaganda, authoritarianism, war, addiction, homelessness, and societal collapse, told through characters and narratives rather than direct commentary.

“Witness To A Dying World is the album I’ve wanted Absolute Darkness to make for a long time. Not because it’s heavier or faster than our previous releases, but because it finally feels like a complete band effort. Everyone contributed to the songwriting in one way or another, and I think that made every song better. Some songs are straight-up thrash. Others lean more into melodic death metal. There are a lot of guitar harmonies, plenty of solos, and enough twists along the way to keep things interesting, but we always tried to make every change feel natural instead of complicated for the sake of being complicated.

At the end of the day, we’re doing this because we genuinely enjoy making music together. None of us are trying to become full-time musicians or make a living from the band. We all have careers, families, and lives outside of music, and that gives us the freedom to write the songs we want to write instead of chasing trends. If people come away remembering the songs, wanting to hear them again, and maybe even thinking about the stories they tell, then we’ve accomplished exactly what we set out to do,” adds Dorn.

Formed by lifelong friends Giuseppe “G” Criniti (vocals/guitar), Marco Sisti (guitar/bass), and Nico‑Angelo Sisti (drums), OMBRA emerged in late 2020 after G and Marco departed their previous hard‑rock/progressive project NRTH to pursue a heavier, more aggressive sound. Nico, Marco’s cousin and a well‑known drummer in the Montreal scene, joined shortly after leaving Hidden Pride. With all three members having grown up together in Lachine, the band’s formation felt natural, inevitable, and rooted in decades of shared history.

Written between 2021 and 2026, OMBRA’s debut record “Night Terror” channels the band’s lived experiences and observations of a world defined by upheaval, media distortion, obsession, chemical escape, and psychological unraveling. Designed as a continuous front‑to‑back journey, the EP builds toward the intense emotional peak of its title track. Across its five songs, “Night Terror” traces a rising arc of mental tension. Opening track “Hysteria” confronts societal panic and media‑driven chaos; “Stitches” plunges into obsession and the painful pursuit of transformation; “Blue Dream” captures chemical escapism collapsing into paranoia and possession; “Night Terror” delivers a visceral mental freefall where everything goes wrong; and “So It Goes” closes the experience with an instrumental moment of acceptance, peace, and forward motion.

“Our goal was to create something honest. The world has gone through so much turmoil in the last decade. Night Terror is our commentary on fear, control, and the human condition. We want listeners to explore their own minds, think for themselves, and express freely,” says the band.

The band’s writing process begins with the rhythm section, the “heartbeat”, before expanding through long jam sessions, layered melodies, and extended solos. Every member contributes to the songwriting, though G and Marco handle the majority of the core composition.

Canadian extreme metal band Without Mercy will unleash their new EP, “Infinite Loss,” on May 8th, delivering one of the most intentional, intense, and creatively defining statements of their nearly two‑decade career. To mark the release, the band has partnered with Metal Insider for the exclusive premiere of the full EP stream, alongside the debut of the lyric video for the title track, “Infinite Loss.”

The EP arrives following the rollout of previously released singles “Glass” and “The Saint,” each offering a distinct glimpse into the record’s emotional weight, sonic restraint, and thematic depth.

Guitarist DJ Temple describes “Infinite Loss” as the result of a transformative and deliberately uncomfortable creative process:

“This was the first time we left home to make a record. We crossed borders, uprooted our routines, and committed fully to the process by living inside it for ten days. There was no comfort, no distance, and no way to step away.”

The band built the EP around three songs that genuinely excited them, not as singles, but as statements. Every decision had to earn its place.

“The result is something we are proud of, not because it represents a direction we chased, but because it reflects who we were in that moment and what we were willing to commit to,” adds Temple.

For the first time, Without Mercy worked with a producer at a deep structural level, embracing tension, disagreement, and collaboration as essential parts of the process.

“This record exists because we chose to be uncomfortable, to argue honestly, and to stay in the room until it felt right,” says Temple.

Lyrically, “Infinite Loss” is about being hunted, not once, but repeatedly. The threats shift, but they never disappear. Economic pressure, identity, time, survival, and expectation all close in at once. The record speaks to the modern experience across the Americas: not victimhood, but endurance under relentless pursuit.

Musically, the EP mirrors that pressure through repetition, density, and restraint. Riffs sit heavy and suffocating. Rhythms feel physical and deliberate. The aggression is controlled rather than chaotic, creating a sense of inevitability rather than release.

Opening title track, “Infinite Loss,” with its repetition, density, and deliberate pacing, creates a suffocating sense of inevitability. Middle song, “The Saint”, is the EP’s biggest stylistic departure, leaning into space, tension, and unfamiliar structure. EP closer, “Glass”, interconnects riffs inspired by Meshuggah and Alluvial, tightening inward until the outro opens with scale and finality.

Without Mercy was formed in 2007, blending groove, extreme metal, and technical precision into a sound described as “heavy and insightful at the same time.” The band has shared stages with Cattle Decapitation, Aborted, and Death Angel, and has appeared as downloadable content in Rock Band 3, bridging gaming culture and heavy music.

Their discography includes “All Else Fails” (2007), “Without Mercy” (2009), “Reborn” (2014), rereleased as “Mouichido” (2016), and “Seismic” (2020). “Infinite Loss” marks their most focused and intentional work to date, a release built from collapse, rebuilt through discipline, and finished with absolute conviction.

““The Saint” is somehow both maniacal and controlled. In its opening couple of minutes it seems to be a carefully calibrated convulsion, discharging its myriad sensations in quick stop-start bursts of seemingly off-kilter but tightly executed mayhem. Those sensations include sledgehammer rhythmic brutishness, shrill and spidery fretwork-delirium, and napalm-strength vocals. The grooves are there — grooves of differing kinds — but they quickly jackhammer listeners in the midst of harrowing howls, scorching screams, and a multitude of fleet-fingered but berserk and discordant string contortions. Saskatoon, Canada’s death thrash force Pythonic has announced the release of their second single, “Liturgy”, following the success of their first single, “Guiltfeeder”. Both tracks pave the way for the band’s highly anticipated sophomore EP “Decomposition,” set to drop on December 19, 2025.

Formed by guitarist Vincent Kohut, Pythonic was born out of a desire to break free from subgenre constraints and deliver metal in its purest, most aggressive form. Alongside lead guitarist Ryan Hunter, bassist Max Hiske, drummer Jayden, and new vocalist Morgan Warriner, the band has forged a sound described as aggressive, groovy, raw, thick, and dirty.

“Liturgy came out so good on the recordings, we couldn’t help but spotlight this track. The riffs rip, the drums rip, the bass rips, what can we say, this song rips. It’s such a classic metal song, with lyrics about summoning a demon under a blood moon. Morgan’s guttural delivery took it to another level,” says the band.

The band’s second EP, “Decomposition”, represents a heavier, more death-metal-oriented chapter for Pythonic. Tracks such as “Conceit”, “Pills”, and “Collateral” showcase themes of corruption, addiction, toxic relationships, and triumph, while “Liturgy” embodies the band’s darker, more extreme influences. The EP artwork, created by Danya Lawton, visually decays the band’s debut imagery to reflect the reimagined nature of the songs.

“When we brought in Morgan as our new singer, the songs came alive again. What once felt tired now feels powerful; his vocals gave them the chance they deserved. Max’s bass adds a soul-shaking thump, especially on Collateral, while Jayden’s heavier drumming drives the tracks with ferocity and double kicks. We also worked with Reid Paraszczynec of Lucid Distortion Audio, a longtime friend of Vincent and Ryan, whose mixing and mastering made the songs sound phenomenal. Reid’s sharp ear and easygoing nature helped usher in the next chapter of Pythonic the right way,” adds the band.

Fans can brace themselves for an all-out assault of crushing riffs, pounding bass, unrelenting drums, and guttural vocals, solidifying Pythonic as a powerhouse in Canada’s rising metal scene.

Saskatoon, Canada’s rising metal force, Pythonic, has announced the release of their first single, “Guiltfeeder”, a blistering preview of their highly anticipated sophomore EP, “Decomposition,” set to drop on December 19, 2025.

“The intro riff just makes it the perfect fit for the lead spot. The sick new lyrics tell of backstabbing friends, the emotional toll it causes, and the unmasking of those backstabbers. A story most people can relate to. The ending of the song definitely is the best part, though. You have the grouped up vocals that transition right into Ryan’s solo. That solo is so masterfully clean you’ll want to just keep replaying it. You also have the rhythm behind it all, which just keeps your head bobbing along. Mix it all together and you’ve got a certifiable banger on your hands,” the band adds.

Pythonic’s forthcoming EP “Decomposition” marks a bold step into heavier, death‑metal territory, pushing the band’s sound to new extremes. The tracks have been “decomposed”, stripped down, sharpened, and rebuilt to spotlight the commanding presence of new vocalist Morgan Warriner and the band’s refined direction. Songs like “Liturgy” showcase their intensified death metal edge, while “Pills” captures Warriner’s versatility as he shifts seamlessly from frantic cadences to bone‑chilling screams. By breathing new life into older material, “Decomposition” revitalizes Pythonic’s catalogue, transforming solid songs into devastating anthems. The EP artwork, created by Danya Lawton, continues the visual legacy of Pythonic’s debut release. Lawton “decayed” the original design with authentic mushroom imagery and a haunting central eye, symbolizing the band’s transformation and heavier direction.

The band will also celebrate the EP with two major live appearances: opening for Canadian metal legends Into Eternity on November 21st at Black Cat Tavern in Saskatoon, and storming the stage at Slaughterfest in Edmonton on December 6th at The Starlite Room.

NYC heavy trio CHAKA has dropped their thunderous new single “It’s Not Human”, a primal assault of groove and aggression that marks the first release from their upcoming debut full-length album, “Amplifying the Past”, due out later this year.

Formed as a studio project and now evolved into a live sonic force, CHAKA has deep roots in Queens’ metal and hardcore scene. Founding bassist and vocalist Mark Sokoll, a veteran of bands like Darkside NYC and Terminal Confusion, is joined by longtime friends Mike C. (ex-White Trash) on drums and Frank P. (Lost Cause) on guitar. The band also collaborates remotely with Ireland-based guitarist Ty Canon, a childhood friend whose riffs continue to shape their recordings.

Lyrically, “It’s Not Human” presents a sonic excavation. The song delves into the real-life discovery of a Neanderthal tooth, a pivotal moment in tracing the human genome.

“It’s about evolution, science, and ancient ancestry,” says Sokoll. “We’ve always drawn inspiration from human origins, military history, and authors like Arthur C. Clarke and Carl Sagan.”

Musically, the track is a relentless juggernaut—starting abruptly, rushing forward with thrash intensity, then shifting to a dreamy tone before returning to a pummeling close.

The single’s artwork visually echoes this evolutionary theme, featuring crossed primitive weapons behind a grotesque DNA helix, flanked by dueling skulls—one ancient, one modern.

Set for release later this year, “Amplifying the Past” represents CHAKA‘s most dynamic and collaborative work to date.

“This record expands on our earlier sound but lets the songs breathe more. We want listeners to feel like they’ve been on a cathartic, headbanging ride,” adds Sokoll.

The band’s style is best described in five words: Primal. Loud. Heavy. Aggressive. Groovy. Drawing on influences like Black Sabbath, Carnivore, Motorhead, and Celtic Frost, CHAKA delivers raw, no-frills metal with a scientific twist.

Another highlight for Friday is the screaming heavy metal from Calgary’s speed demons Riot City, who bring forth their steel, spikes, and leather! A youthful band that represents the new face of Canadian metal. Saturday, July 12th will be headlined by international tour de force, progressive deathcore titans, Chicago’s BORN OF OSIRIS. The group is signed to Sumerian Records and has released seven full-length albums and two EPs. Their album, A Higher Place, reached number 73 on the Billboard 200. Their second full-length album, The Discovery, debuted at 87 on the Billboard 200. The band unveiled their latest single “In Desolation” this past August. Other treasured highlights of this year’s fest not to miss are Montreal, QC up-and-coming thrashers DROWNING IN BLOOD, who are notorious pit mongers and have made quite a name for themselves in Eastern Canada. Vancouver’s GRAVEMASS might be a new band, but they feature some seriously experienced metalheads from Zimmers Hole, The Golers, Punch Drunk, 3 Inches of Blood, and Revocation. Switzerland’s technical death/black metal Stortregn delivers a mix of charging riffs, blast beats, and brutality that leaves the listener begging for more. The Defect is an electronic rock/metal project created by husband and wife duo – Jonny McBee (The Browning) and Moon McBee. Their debut album “Death X Destiny” was released on February 7, 2025, under the record label FiXT. From the Salish lands of Spokane, WA, Hísemtuks Hími•n introduces their Indigenous melodic black metal of hard-hitting riffs, fast-paced drumming, and a lot of melody. This project has strong roots in the Spokane Tribe/Nez Perce. Most songs are about Native American mythology, history, and folklore.

About: Since 2009 (minus pause years 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic), West Metal Entertainment and Armstrong Metalfest have not only fostered the talent of hundreds of local bands, but have imported well-known, international acts to the quiet, little Canadian town of Armstrong, British Columbia.

Each year hundreds of metal music fans from Canada and the USA descend into the picturesque Okanagan Valley and under the blistering sun, they spend three days camping, taking in a tonne of heavy metal fun over two days, spectating wrestling events, participating in scavenger hunts, and catching up with their extended metal family.

The festival has seen such renowned headliners as Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, Archspire, Nekrogoblikon, Origin, Rivers of Nihil, Warbinger, Fallujah, Striker, and Beyond Creation as well as emerging artists from across North America. At the end of the revelry, the festival disappears without a trace, leaving the landscape as pristine as it has always been.

West Metal Entertainment is a non-profit society that not only puts on the Armstrong Metal Festival every year in Armstrong, B.C. but also gives bands opportunities to play at different venues throughout the region including all-ages shows, to encourage musical passion in kids as well as adults.

Norwegian Thrash TONIC BREED Drops Explosive New Single “Anew” Featuring Chris Adler of Lamb of God

Tonic Breed’s new single “Anew” features Grammy-winning drummer Chris Adler — in what frontman Patrik K. Svendsen calls the most Lamb of God-style drumming he’s heard from Adler since his days in the band.

Tonic Breed, the metal project led by Norwegian musician Patrik K. Svendsen, is set to release its highly anticipated new single, “Anew,” on June 19, 2025. This high-octane track features Chris Adler, the iconic drummer of Lamb of God, lending his blistering rhythms to the song. The collaboration is expected to set the metal world on fire as Tonic Breed blends its signature thrash sound with Adler‘s unmatched drumming prowess. The song was also mixed and mastered by acclaimed producer Machine, who also handled Lamb of God’s “Ashes of the Wake” and “Sacrament”.

Chris Adler comments:

“I was quite curious when I got an email — and some riffs — from Patrik. He’s done some cool shit and I was flattered to be on his radar… I researched it for a minute and agreed. We did have to take a minute to both feel good about what this would be — meaning I beat up his song like a fucking Rocky movie — but I knew it had the parts and strength. It’s been a privilege to work with Patrik. Humbling. You’ll know what I mean when you hear it.”

Svendensen adds:

“I originally sent over a rough demo of the song, a storm of riffs strung together with placeholder drums and a suggested structure. We worked together on a new structure for the song, and Chris took the lead on shaping it into something far more unique and effective than my original draft. To me, this is the most Lamb of God-style drumming I’ve heard from Chris since he was in Lamb of God. I’m sure some metal guitarists would kill to hear Chris Adler’s drumming behind their riffs — I’ve been lucky enough to experience that firsthand.”

“Anew” will be available for streaming across all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, on June 19th, 2025. The release of “Anew” marks a new milestone in the band’s career, as they prepare for their upcoming album, which promises more collaborations and even more explosive metal tracks to follow past high-profile collaborations, which already include Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth), Björn Strid (Soilwork), Michael Gilbert (Flotsam and Jetsam).

Canadian power thrashers PHEAR have a new lyric video to reign in the “New World Error”. The track is off their second full-length album “Save Our Souls”, which was unleashed this past February from Golden Robot Records.

“New World Error” is a musical and lyrical statement on all the terrible atrocities going on in the world today.

“Humans are sometimes the plague of humanity.” adds the band.

Produced, mixed, and mastered by Jon Howard (Threat Signal), Phear‘s sophomore album “Save Our Souls” can be best described as their heaviest offering to date and follows the award-winning album “Instanitarium” (2019), and the critically acclaimed EP “The Curse Lives On” (2020).

Extremely passionate, and driven, along with their arena-caliber sound, PHEAR is always thinking of new ways to entertain its fans, and “Save Our Souls” is no exception. Mostly written during the dark times of COVID-19, the record has taken four years to complete. Led by Patrick Mulock and producer Jon Howard in the studio, each musician was pushed hard to get the best out of each of them and they delivered.

“We had a lot of time to craft these songs. We didn’t have any time restraints. We would go into the studio and do three songs at a time. We were very excited to work with Jon Howard (Threat Signal) again. Jon is the sixth member of Phear. The studio experience was great as we fed off each other’s ideas. We pushed each other to get the best performances we could. There are NO FILLERS here. Seven String guitars have played a big part in this. Our sound has grown. The bass guitar on this album is HUGE! The drumming from Mike Harshaw was also very aggressive. If you were to ask me now… This is the heaviest Phear has ever been… for now lol!” adds Mulock.

A listening experience of thrash, prog, and classic metal elements, PHEAR offers a strong balance from infectious choruses to melodic and growling vocals for true heavy metal nostalgia. Their two previous singles, the album’s title track and “Snake” are sure to make fans throw up their hail horns and headbang with a sore neck. Plus the band offers up their cover version of Nevermore‘s “Narcosynthesis”.

I wish I head heard the originals but suffice it to say that their songwriting style is very much influenced by Maiden, though much closer to their post-reunion output that any of the classic ’80s stuff. Bottom line, this is over an hour of cool material kind of anonymized by a nondescript name. Worth checking out if you’re into newer Maiden.
