Canada’s Medevil is gearing up to release their second album “Mirror in the Darkness” in April and the 2015 Wacken Battle Canada national finalist couldn’t be more pleased to show off their updated sound. This album is also bittersweet as it is dedicated to drummer Chris Malcolmson who, since recording, has passed away.

According to the band, this album is a big step up from their previous album, with a more progressive and ambitious direction than before. Overall, the songs have much more variety and a lot more to offer, which should accommodate a wider array of musical tastes from metal fans or fans of music in general. Confident that fans of the first album will enjoy this one, they share their excitement:

“We can’t believe we made it to the finish line, what felt like forever since our debut! “Mirror in the Darkness” for us has been a long time coming, honestly mostly due to our ambitions being much higher this time around. Our goal was to create something better on all fronts compared to the last album, and we really feel like we succeeded. There’s much more to offer here in terms of styles, musicality, and maturity. There are a couple songs here as well that we took a stab at creating something more accessible, which fans of us as well as fans of non-metal music could all enjoy. Despite that, the album as a whole is fittingly a lot darker than “Conductor of Storms” in both lyrics and soundscape.”

“Mirror in the Darkness” is Medevil’s boldest step into different musical stylings than ever before. It is a very dark-sounding album mood-wise and can be described as ‘progressive power metal’ in most areas. It has a lot more inspiration pulled from progressive bands, a lot more focus, and the soundscapes have a lot more depth than they’ve had in the past.

Recommended for fans of Metallica, Mastodon, and Metal Church, “Mirror in the Darkness” comes out on April 7, 2023.

About: Medevil is a highly energetic, fast-paced metal band known for its tight songwriting, intense stage presence, and roaring vocals. They are one of the few metal bands coming out of Chilliwack BC and hold that title proud as they have earned much praise and respect since their inception in 2014. As one of the 6 national finalists of the 2015 Wacken Metal Battle Canada, they are becoming more and more renowned throughout the country; their fame attaining them a following in their local town and across through to Vancouver.

Their music could be described as “power thrash” with half of their set being chorus-driven, and the other half focusing on blistering fast riffs. Influences for the band include Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Metal Church. Their fast but catchy songs keep the crowd chanting throughout the set, and leave them wanting more. Liam Collingwood, the band’s singer, keeps the band image in theme with the songs while on stage and will wear thematic outfits when the mood demands it.

The band was founded on January 13, 2014, by Eric Wesa (bass), as well as brothers Liam (vocals) and Ross Collingwood (drums). It only took two months after the band’s inception before the boys found the ultimate guitar duo they were looking for, Gary Cordsen and Brett Gibbs. Once the lineup was solidified, they wasted no time performing shows and begin their musical journey. As a band, Medevil has two common goals; to explore their musical talents, and continue performing live for their fast-growing fanbase.

Vis Mystica is Star Wars-themed power metal coming from the mind of Pennsylvania’s Connor McCray, a massive fan of the franchise. So far, all of his lyrics have been his retelling of the Dawn of the Jedi comics from Dark Horse Comics, and the first compilation of songs is ready for the galaxy in the debut EP “Celestial Wisdom” via Dark Star Records on December 2nd. Three singles have already been released and the fourth, “Beyond the Gates of Fury” is being presented now in lyric video format. The band comments on the single:

“The final song on the EP is, fittingly, the most “furious”. Fury deals with the final battle between the Rakatans and Tythonians and culminates with the fulfillment of the prophecy that was first spoken of in “Lux Et Veritas”. This is the end of our first tale but leads directly into the next story arc we will be writing about.”

Vis Mystica was initially formed by McCray, in late 2015 as a creative outlet to pursue his passion for symphonic power metal while he was still a member of a blackened death metal band at the time. It took nearly five years for the band to get off the ground but really began to pick up steam once McCray discussed it with his friend and bandmate Devin Dewyer. Once they realized the chemistry between them, they got to work on producing this initial EP.

“Celestial Wisdom” is a fantastical journey into a world full of mystic powers and sprawling landscapes, with a classic “Good vs. Evil” battle, many memorable locations, and detailed stories.

Vis Mystica is recommended for Star Wars fans and those who like Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden and Bal-Sagoth. They also have a crowdfunding campaign set up for the EP.

Hyperspace Metal Festival is proud to announce its return after a year and a half of postponement due to the Covid pandemic. The third edition was originally announced for April 2020 and today, event promoter Journeyman Productions shares the rescheduled 2022 lineup to be held in Vancouver, BC from April 15th – 17th at Funky Winkerbeans and the Rickshaw Theatre.

The lineup for Canada’s premier melodic and power metal festival will feature 20 bands, some originally announced for the 2020 production along with a few new additions that will perform over three nights with headliners Into Eternity, Witherfall and Iron Kingdom (full lineup listed below).

“We are very excited to bring to you the lineup for the rescheduled Hyperspace Metal Festival III! It’s been a long time and most of the bands on the lineup have held on this long waiting for the festival to happen. There have been some changes to the lineup; please welcome Into Eternity, Witherfall, Archon Legion, Dire Peril and Planeswalker to the lineup! Highlights of the confirmed bands include Into Eternity performing with their 2006 “The Scattering of Ashes” lineup that sees original members, Tim Roth (clean/death vocals & guitar), Troy Bleich (Planet Eater) (bass & clean/death vocals), Stu Block (ex-Iced Earth) (clean/death vocals) and Jim Austin (drums) reunite along with current guitarist Matt Cuthbertson (Untimely Demise). Into Eternity will be executing tracks from their full-length “The Scattering of Ashes”, an album that has sold over 15,000 copies in the US and peaked at number 45 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart along with giving fans a taste of new extreme music from their forthcoming yet to be titled full-length. Dark melodic heavy metal juggernauts Witherfall from Los Angeles will be blazing new trails and weaving new tales in support of their latest 2021 album “Curse of Autumn” (Century Media Records), and local Vancouver heavy metal heroes Iron Kingdom, who are HMF alumni, make their second appearance on the festival lineup after headlining the inaugural 2018 event. Over the last couple of months, Canada’s Ravenous have been whetting our appetites for their latest offering “Hubris”. Now the main course is ready to dive into. The album is currently streaming on Decibel Magazine and will officially release on October 22, 2021 via Feast Beast Records (NA/EU) / Spiritual Beast (Asia).

The majority of the album was written in two weeks by vocalist R. A. Voltaire and guitarist Jake Wright who take an initial riff as the starting seed which is nurtured with chorus or pre and post-

Choruses laid upon with verses and bridges representing a slight departure in intensity or just “overall power-metalness”. That skeleton is then recorded in their home studio and distributed across all band members to implement changes – each member presents new or modified ideas pertaining to their instrument, and when the overall structure is confirmed, the lyrics are finally written. The band explains their method in their own words:

“The idea is not only to create a melody that resonates with listeners, and not only write inspiring, creative lyrics, but to also tie them together in a way that makes sense sonically and intuitively to the song (and of course, allows the singer to breathe at some point!) Each song on “Hubris” has been carefully penned as a cautionary tale reflecting the motif of arrogance and downfall. Those finalized demos become our listening material for months, as we carefully craft alternate versions and sections, even modified during the recording process.”

Ravenous takes performance, writing, and musicianship seriously, but allows tongue-in-cheek humour and pop culture references to resonate through the songs. From the symphonic Sabaton-esque “Carnage in Carthage” (best served with a shot of fireball and a meatball sub) to the straight rock n’ roll anthem “March of Hunger” (best served with a bong rip followed by taquitos and a slurpee) to the extra enjoyable, folk metal drinking song “Claw is the Law” featuring The Dread Crew of Oddwood’s accordions and mandolins, paired obvious, with White Claw.

Each of the ten tracks offers something different, so whatever your poison, whatever your midnight snack, Ravenous has the perfect musical accompaniment. They are recommended listening for fans of Sabaton, Unleash the Archers and Falconer.

“Hubris” was produced by Ravenous with mixing and mastering done by Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, Opeth, Firewind) along with album guests Vincent ‘Jake’ Jones of Aether Realm, Heinrich Yoshio of Aether Realm, Mathias Blad of Falconer, Nina Osegueda of A Sound of Thunder, The Dread Crew of Oddwood (Full Band).

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of their 2020 album “Question Everything”, American power metallers Helion Prime announce they will be releasing a special edition of the full length digitally on October 8th, 2021 along with vinyl available early 2022.

The special edition was produced by Helion Prime guitarist Jason Ashcraft and Alex Nasla, who also remixed/remastered the record to better fit its vinyl experience. The original artwork also went under a small make-over for a classic “marble wall” vibe. The special edition features a brand new song “Wash Away”, which continues the theme of “Question Everything” and was written about Ignaz Semmelweis, the doctor who discovered the disease-fighting power of hand-washing in 1847.

The bonus material on the special edition also includes cover versions of Children of Bodom’s “Angel’s Don’t Kill” with a guest guitar solo from Garrett Peters and Nightwish’s “The Pharaoh Sails to Orion” with guest vocals from Carlos Zema (Immortal Guardian) plus a guest guitar solo by Garrett Peters.

“Question Everything” is Helion Prime’s first album with new vocalist Mary Zimmer, who has also accompanied the band on two separate tours of the United States. The album also saw the band’s original singer, Heather Michele, returning in a writing capacity and contributing all lyrics and melodies. Heather Michele also along with other former Helion Prime vocalist Sozos Michael and with John Yelland (Judicator/Dire Peril) add their guest vocals on the full length.

The third record is a concept album, with each song revolving around different influential figures throughout human history who had the courage to question the status quo of their respective worlds/societies, in some cases even dealing with harsh persecution as a result. Those Helion Prime chose to write about faced prejudice, mockery, ex-communication, and persecution – yet through it all, they held true to their beliefs and ideas. Time would be their greatest ally as their ideas and identities were eventually validated, oftentimes not until after their passing. They serve as an inspiration for all minds to continue thinking outside the box and staying true to themselves.

Calgary’s SYRYN are offering up a new epic single to seduce fans of melodic power metal. Entitled “Madness Becomes Me”, the song is a preview to their forthcoming yet-to-be-titled 2022 album to follow their debut 2020 full-length “Beyond The Depths”.

Featuring powerful soaring vocals, storytelling, galloping riffs and rhythm, the track leads the listener on an adventure of “twists, turns and burns”.

Calgary, Canada’s Ravenous have a new album “Hubris” coming out this year and the second single “Astral Elixir” is now being served up with a music video via its premiere on MetalInsider HERE.

The single combines the spiritual experience of psychedelic rock with the changing musical patterns of prog metal at thrashing top speeds, a relentless power-thrash workout designed to be slick but rhythmically exhausting. The song breaks into a multifaceted and technical bridge that leads into an explosive shred section before a triumphant singalong ending. Ravenous explain the track further:

“Astral Elixir” was the first song that Jake wrote specifically for the “Hubris” album. It was a dedicated effort to move Ravenous towards a more technical direction while maintaining the genre-blending influences of power, thrash, and speed metal. The title of “Astral Elixir” is a homage to some of Jake’s favourite songs: Astral Body (Between the Buried and Me) and Celestial Elixir (Haken), and the choice to make the lyrics spacey and psychedelic with themes of astral projection and ego death was a deliberate juxtaposition to the shreddy, dense music. Take a sip of the Astral Elixir and get lost in the soaring vocals, machine-gun drumming, and bombastic sweep arpeggios”

Existing fans of Ravenous will notice increased cohesion with “Hubris”, it contrasts against the previous recording where each of the tracks were more of an individual effort combined to create a product, but on this album, they are more of a collaborative effort and tied to finding the best way to bring each artist’s creativity into the fold while still maintaining the ethos of “what is best for the song”.

Ravenous brings a full lineup of experienced musicians together, ones that have toured extensively and are fully dedicated to providing a high-energy, high-intensity live experience. They seek to inspire others to find that inner triumph and glory that drove them to form this project – whether that means starting their own band, or just finding the strength to make a change in their lives – they seek to empower their followers through every step of their journey.

Inspired by Magic The Gathering card game, Planeswalker is the new power metal band founded by Helion Prime guitarist Jason Ashcraft and former vocalist Sozos Michael.

Today the band is debuting the music video for their first single entitled “The Forever Serpent”, which is based on the MTG bad boy Nicol Bolas.

Jason Ashcraft explains the creation of the project:

“For those who follow Helion Prime understand that parting ways with Sozos was due to unfortunate struggles with visa issues as he lives in Cyprus, but I knew someday we’d work together again I just wasn’t sure how. I then got the idea to start a band based completely on Magic The Gathering lore because between Helion Prime and Dire Peril I think I’m good on sci-fi based material and why wouldn’t I need ANOTHER project. When I first heard the song Sozos had written for us I immediately knew it had to be about Nicol Bolas.”

Sozos Michael adds:

“I am beyond excited for the release of ‘The Forever Serpent’, our first creative output with Jason since our collaboration in Helion Prime. As you will surely notice listening to the song (and/or watching the music video), we channeled our most primal nerdiness to this endeavor, and we have no plans to slow down! We have just begun exploring the rich and deep lore of MTG, and we are excited to see where this journey will lead us.”

Planeswalker currently has no immediate plans for a full-length album but Ashcraft would like to see something in 2021.
