In 2010, vocalist and songwriter Adrian Pain endured events that would have left most men shattered and broken. Unwilling to take prescribed medications for his severe depression, he found inner strength in the form of the lyrics and music that sprang from his suffering. Together with his son and drummer Ethan Clark, formed a new family in the shape of their band, Adrian Pain & The Dead Sexy. Adrian describes their music as “torment and triumph, sonic seduction.” They have transcended their initial influences of Deftones, Alexisonfire, and Of Mice & Men, to a genre of metal they have given a name of its own. “We like to call what we do ‘Allcore’ … To break it down as far as metal sub-genres go, I think what best describes us would be a blend of Progressive & Nu-metal, with Post-Hardcore & Metalcore …or NuMetalcore if you’d like!”

Their new EP ‘Mixed Messages’ set for release on February 10, 2017 continues their solid chemistry of an ‘Allcore’ metal sound with emotionally stirring and socially conscious lyrics.

Pain describes the ‘Mixed Messages’ EP:

“This release is like the gateway drug to metal and heavier music in general! We appeal to a very wide range of musical tastes so guys can play us for their girlfriends, and girls can play us for the guys. If you identify another way, you can play us for whomever you’d like. If any negative response comes out of it, it’ll be the fans that expect every song to get heavier with each effort. What I hope they notice is the constant evolution of our sound. The music itself is getting more and more diverse and progressive, while the song structures are also evolving into bigger, more complex arrangements. I want everyone that listens to this record to feel an emotional connection. I want people to relate to, and hear the MESSAGE in each track.”

Evolving from past EPs, 2014’s ‘Picture Day At Night School’ and their 2013 debut ‘The First One Is Free’ along with Adrian Pain’s solo full length 2012’s ‘Love Letters & Suicide Notes’, ‘Mixed Messages’ is a mixture of Adrian Pain’s solo work and The Dead Sexy’s band work with subtle messages that they hope would help their fans deal with negativity in different aspects of their lives.

Just as they deliver shock and awe on record, Adrian Pain & The Dead Sexy‘s live performance is a constant energy exchange. Their sets have a life of their own. One minute the whole room can be bouncing, the next there may be a pit, or there can be a complete hush over the crowd while they catch their breath and listen intently as the band engages them and the fans interact back with them. This showmanship has lead Adrian Pain & The Dead Sexy to blow up the Toronto music scene, headlining major clubs such as Sound Academy, Virgin Mobile Mod Club, Hard Rock Café for Hard Rock Rising, Bovine Sex Club, The Rivoli, Lee’s Palace, and The Horseshoe Tavern along with locally supporting touring bands such as Mushroomhead, Wednesday 13, Eyes Set To Kill, Anvil, Killer Dwarfs, Sid Wilson / Slipknot After Party, Die Mannequin, Carol Pope, Sumo Cyco, Dance Laurie Dance, Castle and more. Local Vancouver thrashers TERRIFIER unleashed their new album ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’ on January 20, 2017 via Test Your Metal Records to follow their 2013 EP ‘Metal or Death’ and 2012 full-length ‘Destroyers of the Faith’. Originally scheduled to be local support on January 22nd for Entombed A.D.’s tour stop at Rickshaw Theatre, the event was unfortunately cancelled. With that news, TERRIFIER have rallied to announce a headlining CD release show on February 17th at Pat’s Pub & Brewhouse with support from Rotting Slab with their brand of death grind all the way from Portland Oregon plus local support from Assimilation’s brand of titular death thrash, Cadaveric Lividity’s brutal, brain popping slams and Ganglyon’s fretboard wizzardry.

About:

Japan’s SOLITUDE was formed in 1996, when two ex-members of SACRIFICE (Japan)*, the founding member and main composer Akira Sugiuchi <vo> and the bass player on two of their albums Toru Nishida, met ex-RIP RIDE guys of Yasuo Koyano <ds> and Hiroki Nakamori <g>. The guys kept on rehearsing for as long as 3 years, composing songs and forging the foundation of the band. With Heavy Metal as its core, their sound has tastes of various music as if to show that they have been influenced by various different styles of music, such as 70’s Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, and most notably NWOBHM, among others.

In 1998, they picked up “SOLITUDE” as the name of the band, and they played live for the first time in March 1999. This debut live was reported through fanzines and the internet, with such praises as “the birth of the new Defenders of Heavy Metal” or “the answer to what Heavy Metal is”. In September, Shingo Ida (ex-BARTOLOMMEO) replaced Nakamori, and his distinctive style of melodic guitars has brought a new blood into the band. In November, they recorded two songs, “Virtual Image” and “Eagle Fly”, latter of which was dedicated to their favorite British Heavy Metal band, SAXON. This recording was used for promotion as “SOLITUDE Demo ’99”.

In July 2000, the band started recording an album, and the recording carried on until December as the band aimed at the highest quality they could achieve. Their debut album “Virtual Image” was finally released on 5th of September, 2001 as the first-ever release of SPIRITUAL BEAST, who would later grow to one of the leading independent Heavy Metal labels in Japan. The album got rave reviews from the underground fanzines and webzines, not just in Japan but in the US and throughout Europe, and requests for interviews flooded in. The reaction was especially overwhelming in Germany, owing to the sampler CD called “Metal Crusade” from “Heavy oder was!?” magazine, which featured the title track “Virtual Image”.

Koyano left the band prior to the release of the album, but the band continued touring with the help from Suguru Kobayashi (ex-CASBAH), sharing the stage with various bands from OUTRAGE, RAGING FURY or METALUCIFER to DEFILED and SIGH. In July 2003, having added Tai Syouda (ex-GUARDIAN’S NAIL, now leading his own band, SEVENTH SON) as a permanent drummer, they flew to Germany to play at “Headbangers Open Air”, where they shared the stage with veterans like BLITZKRIEG, TRESPASS, and KILLER (Belgium) as well as youngsters like STORMWARRIOR, CRYONIC TEMPLE and DOOMSWORD. Their performance was praised by various media, with German “Rock Hard” magazine describing them as “the highlight of the festival”. The fact that many metalheads kept on chanting for SOLITUDE for a while after they left the stage proves the impact they had.

In 2004, they started preparing for a new album, and first recorded “Rainbow Theme” – “Frozen Rainbow” for a SAXON tribute album “Eagleution – A Tribute to Saxon”, put together by Remedy Records in Germany. The recording continued while the band played selected gigs like “Duryu Rock Festival” in Korea (with JURASSIC JADE from Japan, MINDFLOW from Brazil etc), or first-ever opportunity to play in Sapporo, Hokkaido, but their uncompromising attitude and various personal issues of each member delayed the whole process more than they had expected.

The recording, carried out at various points, was finally over and while they were waiting the mixing to be done, at the end of 2008, Syouda decided to leave the band. In February 2009, the remaining 3 guys participated in a NWOBHM cover event “Denim And Leather” as “SOLITUDE with Mad Ohuchi”, featuring none other than Takamasa “Mad” Ohuchi of ex-ANTHEM fame on drums. This resulted in Ohuchi joining SOLITUDE as a permanent member later that year.

In December 2009, after 8 years from the debut album, the long-awaited (literally!) new album “Brave the Storm” finally hit the stores. Like its predecessor, the album was produced by Fuyuhiko Inui, ex-band mate of Ida, who has been involved in various recordings as engineer/producer from BUCK-TICK or CHARA to MAVERICK. The mastering duty was handled by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (THE AGONIST, MASTODON etc).

In January 2011, the band toured Korea and Japan with Swedish sensation Enforcer, with Mean Streak also added for the Japanese dates. In September, “Brave the Storm” was released in Europe on Fastball Music in Germany, proving their growing popularity in the mainland Europe. In July 2012, the band helped set up a Japan tour for Canada’s Skull Fist, and toured with them and Widow from US. In 2013, they co-hosted the “Japanese Assault Fest”, sharing the stage with GIRLSCHOOL, VEKTOR, FASTKILL, AIR RAID etc.

In April 2014, the band finally started recording a new album. Looking for the kind of sound production they grew up listening, they went into a closed movie theater in Gotenba, Shizuoka, where they brought in the recording equipments, just like Deep Purple did in a hotel; Rainbow did in an old castle etc in the 70’s. With the great ambience and the environment to allow you to play as loud as you want, the place was later modified into a proper recording studio called “Tapestry Recording Studio”. The band appeared at the “Japanese Assault Fest” two years in a row (SATAN, HEAVY TIGER, MIDNIGHT MALICE, ETERNAL ELYSIUM etc) later that year.

The album was mixed and mastered at Pama Studios in Sweden, by Magnus “Mankan” Sedenberg and Magnus “Maxe” Axelsson respectively, who had worked with such bands as BULLET and CRUCIFIED BARBARA. The stunning artwork was painted by the Italian artist Velio Josto, who had done covers for WARLORD, MEDIEVAL STEEL, OSTROGOTH among others. The album “Reach for the Sky” will be released on SPIRITUAL BEAST in June 2015, and the band will be extensively touring throughout Japan for the rest of the year, starting in Nagoya in August.

*SACRIFICE (Japan) was one of the leading bands in the Japanese thrash/underground scene from their formation in 1985 until disbanding in 1992, and they left a lot of impacts on young and upcoming bands then and even now. During their career, they released three studio albums, “Crest of Black” (1987), “Total Steel” (1990) and “Tears” (1992) and shared the stage with SODOM (Germany), NUCLEAR ASSAULT (USA), CASBAH, OUTRAGE, UNITED (all from Japan) among many others. They once featured Shinji “Samm” Tachi of ex-SABBAT on drums, who later formed MAGNESIUM and also joined his brother in METALUCIFER. SACRIFICE has recently reunited under the lineup of Sugiuchi <vo>, Nishida <b>, Tachi <ds> and Temis Osmond <g> of ex-SABBAT fame.

The terrifically titled Terrifier brings their thrash metal apocalypse straight outta Vancouver BC. As the Metal God himself Rob Halford memorably sang: ‘fast and furious/we ride the universe’, that very much sums up Terrifier’s dedication to the glory of thrash!

Originally known as Skullhammer, Terrifier released their debut album ‘Destroyers of the Faith’ back in 2012 and Metal Or Death EP in 2013, so this is no flash-in-the-pan thrash band!

Vocalist, bassist and founder member Chase Thibodeau explains Terrifier’s reason for being. ‘We formed this band because we love thrash and play what we think sounds cool…our music is fast, technical, heavy and melodic and shredding.’ Indeed, this is a band that truly puts the shred inside your head!

It’s their inspirations that drive them to create such perspiration-inducing music as Chase explains: ‘Adrenaline, speed and aggression….that’s the feeling we want to put into people….We started steering more towards an aggressive thrash sound…even being influenced by death metal!’

Their new release ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’ features such soon to be classics as ‘Bestial Tyranny’, ‘Skitzoid Embolism’ and ‘Nuclear Demolisher’ and ‘Sect of the Serpent’, a song inspired by Conan the Barbarian as Chase says ‘the idea was to trample the weak and hurdle the dead on this one!’

Chase sums up Terrifier’s new music: ‘We think people will enjoy this album and use our music to get pumped up for whatever life throws at them. It would be our honour to inspire others into thrash metal…the world needs more thrash!’

Bursting out of the metal underground with a third-world fury not seen since the mighty Sepultura unleashed their seminal ‘Beneath ‘The Remains’, KRATORNAS are set to make a devastating onslaught on the world of metal.

If any band has ever earned its chance it is KRATORNAS, the brainchild of a certain Zachariah. He began KRATORNAS in the early 90’s despite dealing with problems many Western bands never encounter like crime, corruption, poverty, lack of equipment, or even an outlet to buy records! Truly we can see why KRATORNAS are inspired by real-life horrors. Zachariah’s love of metal was born from tape-trading. To put Zachariah’s glacial patience in perspective, after many primitive demos, KRATORNAS’ debut album was finally released in 2007! In 2011, Zachariah left the Philippines to seek a place more friendly to his art, finally settling in Canada.

KRATORNAS’ new album, ‘Devoured By Damnation’ is the first that was properly recorded. The music is inspired by ‘Bathory, Deicide, Sadus, Terrorizer and Vader’ and will ‘treat listeners like punching bags!’, it’s sound being ‘raw, primitive, deranged, high octane, fast, a combination of grindcore, raw black metal, death metal punch and thrash metal riffs.

Wacken Metal Battle USA is coming to America!

For over a decade at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, independent metal bands from around the globe have been performing in front of thousands and competing against one another for one to be crowned champion of the world along with winning multiple prizes (prizes info). For the first time ever, Wacken Metal Battle USA is coming to America for its inaugural year and will be hosting qualifying rounds in New York City, Boston and Philadelphia (more may be announced). The national champion of those battles will perform at the 2017 festival taking place from August 3rd – 5th.

Submissions for Metal Battle USA will end on December 2nd at 11:59pm EST.

How it works:

Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals (dates to be determined), selecting the top band to move forward to the national finals in New York City (date to be determined) with one being selected to perform at the 28th edition of Wacken Open Air. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.

The finalists will be selected as follows by city.

RULES:

All bands, that wish to participate in the Metal Battle, must read the following rules and guidelines. Bands who send in an application automatically agree to the rules and terms.

Your band doesn’t have a deal and isn’t about to sign to a label in the near future.
Your band can easily play a 25 minute set consisting of your own songs. (No Covers). Full set performance time is 25 mins.
PA, lighting, and sound engineer will be provided for all bands.
Backline arrangements TBA.
The bands must bring their own instruments such as guitars, bass, drum breakables, keyboards and effect pedals and may also bring and use their own guitar amps.
To keep the changeover times as short as possible, bands with left handed drummers will play as first or last band. All bands have to follow the directions given by the promoters or stage manager.
Semi playback is not allowed. All bands must play live. Background orchestrations are ok as long as all vocals, guitars and bass are live. Intros / interludes are also ok.
Jury of respected music industry folk will decide the winners each night.

If a band overruns its allotted performance-time, then the band-members should be aware of the fact that in this case their sound will be faded out. The running order for the concert will be released a few days before the event takes place.

Please note:
Travel for the winning band to go to Germany is at their own expense and accommodations at the festival will be in the form of camping in the VIP area.
Full professional back line will be provided for performance.

You may be familiar with Vancouver, BC’s TERRIFIER as the band has been setting their scene ablaze sharing the stage with the likes of Havok, Destruction, Exmortus, Anvil, 3 Inches of blood, Holy Grail, Dismembered, Suffocation, Into Eternity, Striker, Ghost Ship Octaivius, Crowbar, Cauldron, Cryptopsy and Battlecross. Decadawn is a melodic death metal band from Montreal, Canada. In 2014 they released their first album ‘Solitary Confinement’ which features guest vocals from Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates) on the album’s title track. The band had some minor lineup changes since the release of their album. The full lineup is now made of: Louis-Charles Tardy (founding member, vocals, guitars), Pierre-Olivier Merizzi (lead guitars), Frank Larouche (rhythm guitars), Colin MacAndrews (drums) and Jean-Daniel Poirier (bass). They are currently working on their next album, which should be released in 2017.
