Grande Prairie, Canada’s own metal force, Devolver, has dropped a powerful new music video for “Wraiths,” a standout track from their latest album “Non Compos Mentis.” Filmed during an intimate album release show at Grain Bin Brewing, the video captures the raw energy and camaraderie of a night that brought 150 fans together under the Alberta sky, immortalizing a night of celebration, community, and crushing riffs.

“We knew we wanted to do something special. So we had our friend Mike Evans film the show. This music video is for all the people who were there celebrating with us, making it such a special night,” adds the band.

“Wraiths” is a groove-driven, straight-ahead metal track with thrash undertones and a nod to classic rock and metal. Lyrically, it explores themes of mysticism as a bridge to connect with lost loved ones, an emotional depth that complements its sonic punch.

Watch the video for “Wraiths” via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

Formed in 2015 by guitarist Devin Babcock and drummer/producer Bevin Booth, Devolver has grown from a side project into a full-fledged metal powerhouse. With the addition of Jayde Penner (guitar), Chris Brown (vocals), and Jaylen Elias (bass), the band’s sound has matured into a collaborative blend of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal and early 2000s metalcore.

Their new album, produced by metal heavyweight Mark Lewis (Trivium, Whitechapel, The Black Dahlia Murder), marks a seismic shift in their sound.

“This is what the five of us sound like collaborating as a unit. Mark helped us push this thing over the edge,” adds the band.

The album’s artwork, created by legendary artist Travis Smith (Opeth, Megadeth), is a chilling visual interpretation of the true story behind the title track. It depicts Devin Babcock’s ancestor, Amos Babcock, who in 1805 committed a gruesome murder in Shediac, New Brunswick, during a religious frenzy. The haunting image of Amos in the snow, surrounded by the eyes of his nine children, adds a historical and emotional weight to the album’s narrative.

Devolver’s connection to their hometown runs deep. They partnered with Grain Bin Brewing to create “Brews of the Maw,” a blackberry and blood orange pale ale named after their track “Jewels of the Maw.” And for fans of Magic: The Gathering, the band has hidden lyrical nods throughout the album, including a track titled “Deathtouch.”

Recommended for fans of In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Killswitch Engage, and As I Lay Dying, “Non Compos Mentis” is a bold leap forward, each track a chapter in a larger emotional and sonic narrative.

“The goal of Devolver through Non Compos Mentis has been to take the listener on a thoroughly pleasing journey from the first note to the final crushing moment. That’s been achieved, and so much more – as these Canadians understand how to compose songs and execute them in a highly convincing fashion that has this scribe grinning ear to ear – bringing the exciting sounds of the late 90s/early 2000s to a newer generation who desire more of this style. 9/10” – Dead Rhetoric

“For a group from a small northern city, every move has required deliberate effort—whether it was recruiting the right collaborators, waiting until circumstances lined up, or carrying material through years of delay. Non Compos Mentis is the document of that persistence: an album shaped by distance, disruption, and devotion to the sound that first made them want to pick up instruments.” – IDIOTEQ

“DEVOLVER is definitely ahead of the last releases of their great role models. On the one hand, because the Canadians work straight and without any frills, and on the other hand, because the melodies are all right without reducing the heaviness. When it comes to melodic death, there’s no way around this album this year. The only downside: 32 minutes is pretty short, even for such energy output!” – PowerMetal.de

“Mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis (Fallujah, Whitechapel, DevilDriver, Deicide, Havok, Entheos, etc.), this new Devolver album is armed to face the critics. Composed of nine well-crafted tracks (all between three and four minutes long) and effective, Non Compos Mentis is soaked to the brim with Swedish melodeath influences.” – Metallian Magazine (France)

“There is a sense of nostalgia listening to the guitarmonies throughout the album, calling back to the golden days of early 2000’s metalcore. Whether you’re a fan of death metal or metalcore, you’ll definitely find elements that you’ll appreciate on this album. Personally, my favourites are “Deathtouch” and “Suffocate Syndrome”” – False Chord

“Now we have Devolver with Non Compos Mentis. The sophomore album from this Canadian band is the perfect blend of melodeath and metalcore. Much like chocolate and peanut butter, this takes the best aspects of both genres, makes enough changes to feel authentic, and creates a sound that hits just as much in 2025 as it would have back in 2005. The production is brutal, but still audible and filled with layers. The songwriting shows off the capabilities of everyone in the band, but it doesn’t reveal all of its tricks. Overall, this is for anyone who enjoys everything from ’90s era In Flames to 2000 Soilwork to later 2000’s Lamb of God to the modern-day capabilities of what Melodeath and Metal Core are all about. This is a great trip back in time, but also a look forward to what can be done. This is excellent stuff.” – Heavy Debriefing

Montreal, QC – July 14, 2023

DEVOLVER Takes A New Look At Melodic Death Metal With Single “Jewels of the Maw”

+ Western Canadian Tour Tour Dates (AB, BC) w/ Widow’s Peak, Snakepit

L-R – Jayde Penner (Rhythm Guitar), Jaylen Elias (Bass), Chris Brown (Vocals), Bevin Booth (Drums), Devin Babcock (Lead Guitar)

Hailing from Grande Prairie, Canada, Devolver’s particular brand of metal can be described as “Gothenburg worship meets NWOAHM”. Formed by guitarist Devin Babcock and drummer/producer Bevin Booth, and later rounded out by guitarist Jayde Penner, vocalist Chris Brown, and bassist Jaylen Elias, Devolver blends groovy metalcore and melodic death metal, creating a unique sound that appeals to fans of modern metal genres while embracing their old school influences, wearing them on their sleeve. With their heavy-hitting new album in tow, and fueled by a passion that can only be understood by seeing their unbridled live performance, they are ready to make waves in Canadian and international metal scenes alike. The first look at their forthcoming album is the single “Jewels of the Maw” produced by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide, Devildriver, Whitechapel). The track was also heavily inspired by the novel Bluebeard by Kurt Vonnegut. The band gives some insight into the song:

“Musically, it comes in very hot with a scream and straight into an upbeat riff. As we move into the next section it picks up with the verse, which brings up memories of old In Flames. This single will eventually be on the album we recorded with Mark Lewis. He really motivated us to push the envelope and make a really strong body of work. This song is us making the music that WE want to hear, built on the foundation of all our influences that made us want to do this in the first place.”

Devolver’s lyrics come from many different places. Much of it comes across as calamitous and devastating. The novel this song takes inspiration from covers topics of the creation and value of art, what art means to us, striving to be the most honest version of yourself, and tying into themes of desperation, survival, and genocide.

According to the band, this single is going to turn some heads and call back to late 90’s/ 00’s melodic death metal and metalcore, while looking forward with a razor-sharp sound. They hope people will find it to be a breath of fresh air, that still reminds them of their favourite bands. It is recommended for fans of In Flames, At The Gates, and Soilwork.

“Devolver uses melodies, intensity, and a variety of vocalists to hook you, reeling you from song to song making this such a welcoming and comfortable listen. I don’t mean they’re “easy listening,” there heavy as f***, I mean there’s always something different, you’ll never get bored while diving into this debut.” – Vulture Hound

“If After The Burial and The Ghost Inside had a lovechild, it would be Devolver. These guys blew me away with how professional, well written, and how well structured they’ve presented themselves with their SelfTitled record. Each song has its own personality, while still maintaining a signature sound. The breakdowns are simple, yet effective in each song. There is dynamic tension and then well-needed release throughout the record, and it’s downright masterful. This album is captivating, and I recommend anyone that is a fan of metal to check this out.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews

About:

Since early 2011, Grand Prairie, AB’s Arrival of Autumn has been shaking up the Canadian prairies with their heavy riffs, hooky vocals and speed demon double kicks. Their versatile headbanging tunes has made them accessible to fans of rock to the most hardcore death metal moshpit.

A band name inspired by Opeth lyric’s (thanks to drummer Ty Fox) and influenced by various genres ranging from melodic death to groove metal to progressive to rock n’ roll, AOA’s catalogue has grown rapidly with two self-releases in 2014. First it was their debut EP ‘Endless Nights’ in March followed by their ten track full length ‘Shadows’ in September.

“We are just trying to make a record that’s a little different than what’s going on at the moment. It’s no secret there is an abundance of the exact same thing floating around and we would never add to that. We wanted to give them something exciting and different to listen to. The good thing about our album is you can take any 3 songs put them together and it’s great. Our CD doesn’t rely on having only a few good songs. Every song has the potential to be a single. It can be received any way and people will get what AOA is all about.” comments AOA vocalist Ty Fox.

Touching on personal issues to triumphing demons as a band, ‘Shadows’ with a dash of dark lyrics and tracks such as The Court Of Owls to There’s No Angels Here to the infectious chorus of Like Fire demonstrates AOA are not just evolving, but  are a live force raging to be discovered by the masses.

Vancouver’s TRIBUNE Announce ‘CANADA SLAYS TOUR’ In Support of Author Inspired Concept Album ‘Tales’

Heavy metal brewers TRIBUNE are proud to announce their 2014 ‘CANADA SLAYS TOUR’ kicking off in Kelowna, BC on April 3rd and will see the band trek as far East as Montreal, QC and return West to wrap up the tour in Nanaimo, BC on May 3rd. This is the band’s second cross Canada Tour since 2012, when they toured the US and Canada in support of their album ‘Elder Lore/ The Dark Arts’.

“Greetings and salutations, friends of Tribune. We have news for you! After two years of musical scheming and dubious machinations, we’ve decided to serve you our eclectic brand of heavy metal in person. Tribune will be touring our newest album, ‘Tales’, across Canada. This means that we’ll be stuffing our tall, sweaty selves into a van for the sake of your personal amusement. The new CD and Skeletal Lich Shirts are available, so come prepared if you want to put some gas into the tank of our voracious bandwagon. Her thirst is unending…We’re calling this tour ‘Canada Slays Tribune 2014’. It’s all about our friends and fans, as if it never were before… Come on out and have a good time with us. Cheers! Terry Anderson (guitarist)”

The Vancouver quintet unleashed their concept album ‘Tales’ this past October via their indie label Corpse Corrosion Music. Inspired entirely by literature, ‘Tales‘ features a wide array of influences, from Homer to Mary Shelley to H.P. Lovecraft, to more extreme influences such as Carcass, Death and At The Gates. The band’s appetite for more melodic and more brutally heavy sounds to follow-up 2011’s Elder Lore/The Dark Arts is demonstrated with their collusion of extremity and accessibility that bleeds into the melting pot and their fresh take of progressive death metal.

“Tribune first came to my attention with their free-willed debut, 2011′s Elder Lore/ The Dark Arts – and I’m happy to report they have expanded their unfettered approach even further. These talented Canadian draw influences and inspirations from all over the metal map, fusing extremity with accessibility, the traditional with the contemporary, sweet simplicity and exceptional complexity. What’s more, they have brought all the diversity together into one smooth, cultured, and satisfying whole. There is so much to enjoy on this thoughtfully presented and powerfully produced CD: well worth seeking out for those looking for some fresh, creative metal.” – Zero Tolerance Magazine

“Lyrically, this is steeped in the lore of Lovecraft and Wells, but the music on offer goes through many changes, from raging trad and thrash to technical death metal, changing Tyr into Arsis, Slough Feg into The Black Dahlia Murder. With a production that is healthy and full of fire, ‘Tales’ is a must hear for those looking for something unique and unclassifiable in the metal world. A rare treat.” – Powerplay Magazine

“Tales is one of the most distinctive records I’ve heard this year…undoubtedly delivers difference right off the bat, putting its best foot forward and defying expectations the moment it begins by spotlighting Bryan Baker’s unprecedented singing style.” – Angry Metal Guy

“This is the release that I would expect Tribune to break through with; this is very strong material that is well written, interesting and technically excellent.” – Brutalism

“Canadian band, TRIBUNE, are an eclectic mix of different sounds and genres that result in a refreshing style that can only be heard to fully understand. The progressive quintet’s second full-length album, Tales, is a concept album based on the writings of renowned authors, like Lovecraft and Wells, but the music remains intensive and enjoyable.” – Metal Observer

“very now and then, a band comes around with a defined sound unlike anything previously heard by the listener. Such is the case with Tribune, and their latest release Tales.” – Kosher Metal
