Canada’s Ysgaroth Unveil New Single “Forward Unto Death” From Upcoming “Storm Over a Black Sea”

With their debut album “Storm Over a Black Sea” coming up soon, Vancouver extreme metal band Ysgaroth allure metal fans around the world with a new single, “Forward Unto Death”.

One of the shorter songs on the album, it was the last song written, and it is Ysgaroth stripped down to its core elements: harmonies, black metal atmosphere, and at least one riff born of caveman brutality. Lyrically this song is about everything mankind is doing to the Earth, and the true cost of climate change: everything. We’re not just destroying the Earth in some abstract sense, we’re slowly killing ourselves, and very quickly driving every animal we can extinct.

Probably the most stylistically varied song on the album, the verses evoke 90’s black metal, with the pre-chorus drawing influence from power metal and the chorus being pure 2000’s melodeath. The outro channels the muscular death metal of Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, and the solo is Steigler’s best Trey Azagthoth impression. The band comments about the guests on the song:

“We had already reached out to our friends Jessie Grace and Erik Leonhard of KOSM about having them on the album, and we wanted to do something a little bit different with ‘Forward Unto Death’ by having Jessie sing the chorus. The lyrics on this one are about as straightforward as we can get: we’re killing the Earth more every second of every day, and we only ourselves to blame for the extinction of thousands of species, the absolute shattering of the world, but at least the stock market went up.”

Influences ranging from old school death metal, progressive metal, black metal, and sludge are evident and fans of Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Death will be particularly interested.

The single “Forward Unto Death” is available via its premiere on Metal-Rules HERE.

“Storm Over a Black Sea” will be available on November 13, 2020.

About:

Ysgaroth is a progressive extreme metal band conjured in Vancouver, Canada that seamlessly blends elements of various metal subgenres into a vicious hybrid.

Initially, Ysgaroth started as Kurt Steigler’s black metal studio project, a non-serious musical outlet, but over time he grew attached to the songs and wanted to take them live.

With the desire to hit the stage, Steigler (guitar/vocals) was joined by Steve Cuddington (drums) and Shawn Hillman (bass) With these additions, the songs got more structurally ambitious, a sludge influence began to creep into the band. Cuddington brings an absolutely crushing, hardcore-influenced drumming style that gave the songs a new vitality, and Hillman’s exceptionally musical bass playing served as the perfect bridge between the crushing drums and razor-sharp guitars. Ultimately, the sound of the band became a mix of its black metal roots, classic 80’s death metal, 90’s thrash, and sludge with the long compositions of post-metal and the shifting, churning time signatures of progressive metal. Steigler is the main songwriter, but overall the process is hugely democratic.

The debut album from the band “Storm Over a Black Sea” will be unearthed on November 13th, 2020, and considering the growing amount of music they have been writing – fans can expect a lot more from Ysgaroth.

Vancouver’s Ysgaroth Introduce Debut “Storm Over a Black Sea” With Blackened Thrashing Single “Sacred”

Vancouver’s Ysgaroth are releasing their debut album “Storm Over a Black Sea” and it is rife with vicious riffs and thought-provoking atmosphere.

The first single to entice listeners is “Sacred”. It contains a simple message: despite its imperfections, life is beautiful. The world we’ve been given is an amazing thing that should be protected and celebrated, and we owe it everything we are and have. The cycle of life and death is so much greater than any single person, and it is the one constant that we can rely on. We are born from the ashes of the old, and so will the new be born from the ashes of ourselves. Ysgaroth continues with how the track came to be:

“Unlike most Ysgaroth songs that come from the verses being written first, the chorus was actually the first piece of this song that we came up with. Sacred also slowly got faster and faster as we started practicing it until it became the thrash-influenced ripper it is today.”

Ysgaroth was initially formed as a studio black metal project but over time, a lineup was fleshed out and the songs got more structurally ambitious, a sludge influence began to creep into the band along with tinges of hardcore-influenced drumming and exceptional musical bass playing alongside razor-sharp guitars

Anyone who has seen Ysgaroth live and liked what they’ve heard will love this – and we hope those who are on the fence will probably love it too.

Recommended for fans of Skeletonwitch, Enslaved, and Wolves in the Throne Room, the single “Sacred” and its music video can be heard via its premiere on TheCirclePit HERE.

“Storm Over a Black Sea” will be available on November 13, 2020

“Get down with the neck-snapping “Wings of Death.” It’s a Canuck groove-metal gem.” – Dead Rhetoric

“This is not a one-dimensional album that’s easily described. Each song has its own style and flavour, mixing different styles together with well-deserved contempt for genre restrictions and constraints. Centuries of Decay have crafted a modern extreme metal release that effectively combines these different strains of metal into something all of their own.” – Wonderbox Metal

“A concept record regarding the changing times & how life depends on centuries of decay, the ten minute self-titled opening song showcases melodic metal with deep oceans of imagination. Haunting but with a real sense of beauty, the guitar melody alongside a fascinating drum beat is such an appealing sound. A sound that suddenly takes on a darker tone, upping the heaviness & dealing out an absolutely stunning chugging guitar attack. There is no arguing with that start, absolutely mesmerizing.” –  Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“This is a strong debut for the band and they have laid their vision for their craft nicely.” – Metal-Temple

“Up next was Centuries Of Decay, who gave us some atmospheric death metal. Devin Doucette and Rob McAllister shared guitar and vocal duties. Devin sang lead and handled a chunk of the brutal vocals but they gave a few great harmonized melodic vocals. Their last song had an additive time signature, which is something that really catches my attention as a musician.” – Metal Master Kingdom (Live Review Wacken Metal Battle Canada 2016 – Toronto)

http://unbowed.bigcartel.comAbout:
Unbowed was originally founded in 2011 as a studio-project comprised of Ioan Tetlow (vocals) and Alex Snape (guitar); at the time being just high school kids. Unbowed has self-released two EPs, two full-length albums, and toured throughout Ontario and Québec. Since Unbowed’s humble beginnings, the band’s trajectory has been geared towards releasing epic full length albums and touring across Europe and the rest of the world. Now that the band is comprised of a full line-up of likeminded musicians with the introduction of Steven Rowlands (guitar), Julian Dutton (drums), and Aiden Watkinson (bass), the band is taking the steps to make that ideal trajectory a reality. Through Endless Tides is Unbowed’s most recent and most ambitious output. With this release, the band found a way to naturally represent their wide array of inspirations; allowing them to manifest into a sound that is entirely and uniquely their own. Unbowed is music about acknowledging and tackling the hardships provided by the human condition. We all witness and experience strife and adversity at an alarming rate in this age. Unbowed is about wading through the transitory aspects of life and preserving what is true, what keeps us ambitious, and what keeps us united.

“A band who’ve already played alongside Battlecross, Einherjer, The Contortionist, these barely twenty-year-olds demonstrate a maturity beyond their years. Telling the story of resistance against the ‘endless tides’, the band’s new release is a masterful and brutal journey. Virtuosic guitars, battle-cry musical textures, and apocalyptic vocals – not a half-hearted listen.” – Echoes and Dust

“I can’t help but call Unbowed a highly promising new act” – New Noise Magazine

“Through Endless Tides is the brand new album from Canadian symphonic black/death outfit Unbowed and just…HELL YES. Stick this album on and turn up the volume because it surely can’t be listened to any other way! Through Endless Tides is one seriously awesome piece of work.” – Soundscape Magazine

“‘Through Endless Tides’ is progressive in the best and most natural way” – Uberrock

We live on the layers of deep time and history, strata of times past; life literally depends on centuries of decay. Now, progressive extreme metal visionaries CENTURIES OF DECAY build on the metal that has come before to create the metal of the future. Known for creating an intense powerful atmosphere and letting the metal speak for itself in their live performance, the Toronto based quintet are bringing that experience to fans in their debut self-titled concept album set for release on August 4th.

It also comes from more personal issues such as depression, disillusionment and failure.”

About:

We live on the layers of deep time and history, strata of times past; life literally depends on centuries of decay. Now, progressive extreme metal visionaries CENTURIES OF DECAY build on the metal that has come before to create the metal of the future.

Formed in 2013 in Toronto, Ontario, CENTURIES OF DECAY sound is ‘atmospheric, intense, powerful, dynamic, and heavy’.

Drummer Derrick Doucette explains the roots of the band’s name.

“The intention of the name is to paint an image of nature reclaiming the lands and cities and erasing the traces of humanity once people have been removed from the world. This can also be open to interpretation. Some may see Centuries of Decay as being in reference to an extended period of social degradation or the idea of the planet being a barren land void of life entirely. We chose this name because we felt it conveyed a powerful image and atmosphere, which appropriately went hand-in-hand with our musical style.”

That style will be unleashed by the four-piece on their self-titled debut album due out August 4, 2017, which drummer Derrick Doucette is eager for fans to hear.

“I was told recently that someone found our sound very unique and refreshing. That really meant a lot to me and I would love if that opinion was shared by both old and new fans. I find we’ve taken our influences from various sub-genres of extreme metal and turned them into a tasteful blend of compelling, climactic and devastating intensity on these seven tracks.”

Fans can also expect more music in the future.

“We are already looking forward to writing more material and refining our sound more. I’m excited to see how our sound will evolve…Our fans can expect multiple albums as that was the intent from day one!” adds Doucette.

Live, CENTURIES OF DECAY have their own unique approach to performing, they make every set flow together, creating a huge atmosphere and letting the metal speak for itself.

“”Centuries Of Decay bring together old styles to create new, exciting sounds on debut…From the lurching behemoth of the aptly titled “Centuries of Decay” all the way through to the grandiose finale of “Demise”, Centuries Of Decay bring familiar sounds together and forge a glorious new path forward.” – Rock and Roll Fables

There is no arguing with that start, absolutely mesmerising.” –  Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

Teaming up with MetalWani.com, the band reveals their second single “Wings of Death”, a song about religious and political propaganda and how it’s use to draw lines between people and nations. The lyrical content of this song draws from influences from George Orwell’s 1984. The song was written as two halves, a slower heavier groove, then kicking into fast paced death metal with some vocal harmonies by guitarists Rob McAllister and Devin Doucette.
