Mournful And Meandering, Canada’s Uncle Woe Reveal Second Album “Phantomescence”

Premiere First Single “Become The Ghost” via TheSludgelord

Canada’s Uncle Woe brings you a contemplative, progressive doom album “Phantomescence” that was completely conceived and recorded in pandemic induced isolation. The opening track/lead single, “Become The Ghost” is a meandering exploration of death and dreams.

“Phantomescence” deviates from the first Uncle Woe album as the band moves forward from a solo studio project. It is an easily digestible, logical next step in the band’s evolution; elements, which made the first LP, “Our Unworn Limbs”, engaging and intriguing are present again on this offering; expanded upon, polished, and moderately better produced. The new album deals with death in a much broader and less personal sense, and also contains a lot of abstract, dream sequence type elements.

Currently, as a two-piece, Rain Fice and Nicholas Wowk worked on their parts separately, shared them online and managed to pull off the second album from the band. Fice details the intricacies of the single:

“Become The Ghost is almost relentless in its forward, mid-tempo, stomping march. The first chorus comes as a very small, simple 3/4 breather, in the midst of the opening/verse riff’s endless churning and revolving 11/4 and 15/4 riff. The vocals throughout are rough, and finally build to a scream in that last, closing verse. After the death of someone very near to me, I remember a feeling of loss so great that it seemed that even though THEY had died, I was the one who became a ghost if that makes sense; a ghost, or shadow, or shell.”

Many chugging, bludgeoning passages are offset by expansive and contemplative, subdued, almost post-rock soundscapes, making Uncle Woe suitable for fans of Yob, Chrome Ghost and Deftones.

“Become The Ghost” can be heard via its premiere on TheSludgelord HERE.

The full album “Phantomescence” is due out October 23rd via Packard Black Productions and available for digital, CD and vinyl pre-order HERE.

Track Listing:
1. Become The Ghost (6:29)
2. On Laden Shores (13:30)
3. Lucid Degrees of Autoscopic Ruin (6:45)
4. A Map of Dead Stars (13:14)

About:

Hailing from the oft frozen hills of rural Canada, Uncle Woe is a phantom limb, wielding a bludgeoning tool against mostly true tales of bittersweet sorrow, revenge, and regret.

The bleak desolation of Bancroft, Ontario spawned Uncle Woe in 2019 when Rain Fice grew weary of floundering in non-committed projects and instead dove into songwriting mode with a rough idea of his ideal sound and started carving out what would become the first Uncle Woe LP “Our Unworn Limbs”.

After the album was released in 2019 and started to pick up some buzz, a full band began to form. However, the pandemic was not far off and the band whittled down to a 2 piece. Before lockdown began, Uncle Woe managed to lock down the rough elements of what would become the second album “Phantomescence”, Fice expanded on them, and after being fed to drummer Nicholas Wowk, and recording remotely, the album was complete: a meandering exploration of death and dreams. Many chugging, bludgeoning passages are offset by expansive and contemplative, subdued, almost post-rock soundscapes.

As Uncle Woe begins to hit their stride, fans can look forward to the band putting out music pretty much indefinitely, plans are in motion for a third album already.

The band’s second album “Phantomescence” will be available digitally, CD, and on vinyl on October 23rd via Packard Black Productions.

– 30 –

“The lone member (although it does seem as if drummer Nicholas Wowk has been added to the band) Rain Fice has created a truly wondrous journey through pure doom lands into that astral, transcendental other place doom of the aforementioned Yob that gives you goosebumps with its completely distressing doom metal. Fice’s clean echo-drenched vocals are also of very high quality, while not actually sounding like Mike Scheidt, Fice does exude a similar aura of supreme enlightenment and complete mastery of his art.” – Verbal Aggression

“Never be afraid to take a chance on a new name. This one comes to us from Ontario and was released earlier in the month, though I’m just now getting around to hearing it. I was pretty damned impressed and count UNCLE WOE in the same company as Domkraft, Spaceslug, Chrome Ghost, and Slomatics. Some damned good doom with crunchy low end and transcendent vocals. Count it among the #HeavyBest19” – Doomed & Stoned

“Chugging, sprawling, and most of all reaching, the late-2019 debut LP, Our Unworn Limbs, from Ontario as-yet-solo-outfit Uncle Woe — composed, performed, and recorded by Rain Fice — is one of marked promise, taking elements of modern progressive and cosmic doom from the likes of YOB’s subtly angular riffing style and unfolding them across an emotionally resonant but still manageable 43-minute span.” – The Obelisk

Cryptonight Ushers In Terror With Debut ‘Djoom’ Album “The Black Ritual”

Debut Album “The Black Ritual” Out April 13th

On this Easter Monday, Toronto’s Cryptonight has a slow, djenty and doomy new release for the masses.

Aiming to capture listeners in a very haunting manner, the debut album “The Black Ritual” evokes horror and malice in every riff and melody. All of the music on the full-length was recorded on an eight-string guitar tuned to Eb and is inspired by actual vivid nightmares experienced by members of Cryptonight at various points in their lives. It also includes references from games such as Bloodborne, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and Diablo. The band shares their thoughts on the release:

“We each picked recurring nightmares that made an impression on us and put them together into a story about a dream world. Fans can expect this album to have a sequel, and to continue into the unforeseen future. Our lyrics are literally us telling stories of what happened in our personal nightmares, as descriptively as possible. It’s a collaboration of everything we love together into one sound to make for a deadly recipe. Dark and nightmarish whilst leaving an ambient and serene linger.”

Cryptonight has been cryptically hinting at this album by making a 20-episode web series on their YouTube channel, which included short instrumental preview clips of the songs on the release. The band hints at checking out those videos for an in-depth background on the music.

Now the full length is ready for ears as of April 13th. Join Cryptonight in a dream-like state full of horrors and feel the chill of these nightmares first hand. With the music and lyrics contributing in tandem to the same frightening experience, it’s a walk through the musical realms of djoom.

Listen to “The Black Ritual” as it takes you through an audial horror movie unlike anything ever heard before.

Physical CD copy will be released at a later date and will be a 2-disk set. The second disk will be a director’s cut DVD of Cryptonight Season 1 for fans viewing pleasure. Toronto doom duo ITUS are streaming their debut EP “Primordial” due out March 13th. The EP is the first of two that will culminate into a full-length album.

The EP’s songs focus around aggressive, dark and primal concepts and embrace the death metal roots of the duo. They explain their goals for the release’s reception:

“We think that this EP will manage to ensnare those who are into heavier music, as well as attract other listeners who may not be so into death metal and related genres. The clean vocals and bright lead guitars really lighten up the darker, heavier passages of the songs. Reinier’s aggressive, chortling screams and yelling portrays an unhinged, brooding darkness, sure to keep listeners on the edge of their seats.”

Fans of Electric Wizard, Sleep and Left Behind are sure to enjoy the doomy and stoner rock rumbles of ITUS and their debut “Primordial”.

Listen to the full stream of “Primordial” via its premiere on Decibel Magazine HERE.

EP will be available on Bandcamp and Spotify.

About:

Early in 2019, ITUS was formed by Brandon Lucking (guitars) and Reinier Vandenbosch (vocals), who at the time, were in another band with a different style but looking to try something new. The result was these Ontario boys blending doom and stoner rock with crushing heavy metal passages, in a psychedelic atmosphere of horror influenced sounds.

The writing process is fairly simple for ITUS, Lucking writes the melodies as they come to him, and Vandenbosch writes the vocals and lyrics. The foundation of the lyrics always starts from personal experience, traumas, and how events in life unfold which are further imbued with influence from science fiction and horror fiction, mythology, dark philosophy, and political angst.

The soundscape of horrors that ITUS paints is enthralling already as a two-piece online project, and there are plans on the horizon to build it into a full-on touring 3 piece band delivering an energetic and abrasive live experience with a heavy, brooding ambiance.

– 30 –

“Primordial is a great release as it treats you to five unique tracks. Never once do you hear the same thing as ITUS truly does a great job of keeping you on your toes and guessing as to what you are about to hear next. Through and through this is a well crafted and cohesive effort that you would be unwise to skip over.” – Cadaver Garden

““This Can’t Be” is a change of pace from the record’s ravenous namesake single which came out earlier in the month. It’s a moving window into their world, with clean vocals this time reminiscent of Woods of Ypres and a vibe that fans of Pallbearer should have no trouble at all falling in love with.” – Doomed And Stoned

“dark and brooding doom “Primordial is a powerful and unforgiving EP that is certainly worthy of your time.”  – Astral Noize

“crisp, and aggressive guitar tones” – Permafrost Today

ITUS Unleash Warhammer Inspired Doom Track ‘The Chaplain’ Off Upcoming EP “Primordial”

Debut EP “Primordial” Out March 13th

Toronto’s ITUS unleashes their next single ‘The Chaplain’ off their debut recording “Primordial” due out March 13th. The EP is the first of two that will culminate into a full-length album.

‘Chaplain’ can be heard via its premiere on CVLTNation HERE.

The band adds:

“‘The Chaplain’ is definitely a weird one. We didn’t really know what to do for the final song on the EP so we decided to go up north to Brandon’s cottage, jam for the weekend and see what we came up with. The entire rhythm section of the song was hashed out with a click track. We built up the whole song around one riff, adding many more layers and effects. We really wanted to close the album with a hard-hitting, droning doom song. The lyrics are directly inspired by stories from Warhammer 40k, a popular fantasy war game. It follows the tale of a space-marine soldier, who finds a portal in space which completely corrupts him, and he emerges from that portal as a plague on humanity.

ZAUM is a passage toward the dark realizations of the old world; a monolithic, doomy mantra-based meditative experience forged by bass and drums interwoven with sitar, woodwind, string, and synth textures. Based in New Brunswick – Canada, observers experience a tranquil resonance whereby the astral and physical planes can coexist and be understood from a natural perspective.

ZAUM’s new album ‘Divination’ is a direct continuance of the ever-evolving lore and world in which ZAUM has exposed. Conceptually, the album unpacks transmundane darkness from ancient Burma – touching on conflict, theism, and some esoteric events which play a key role in the developing canon of ZAUM based on their previous releases to date.

Audibly, the album portrays a dense and vivid dream state; supplanting the listener into an overseer’s perspective of these aforementioned esoteric depths, re-experienced with celestial clarity. The soundscapes within encapsulating an unveiled mysticism harnessed to unpack the fluidity of consciousness at the crux of the human condition.

While ZAUM’s meditative “Mantra Doom” sound stays quite true to what people have experienced to date, their sound and presentation certainly has progressed further into new territory on DIVINATION with the inclusion of recorded instrumentation such as Jaw Harp, Didgeridoo, Singing Saw, Dilruba, Saz, Brass Bells, Brass Bowl, and Finger Cymbals. In addition, their live experience now features a monumental change with the recruitment of Egyptian-Canadian evil queen Nawal Doucette to ZAUM, performing her mesmerizing dark dance rituals entrancing those who observe.

ZAUM is :
Kyle Alexander McDonald – vocals, bass, textures
Christopher Lewis – drums, percussion
Nawal Doucette – visual performance art, ambiance

“ZAUM acknowledges the financial support of FACTOR and Canada’s private radio broadcasters.”
“ZAUM recognizes the support of Music/Musique NB and the Government of New Brunswick.”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – June 12, 2019

MOUNTAIN DUST Premiere Music Video For Southern Doom Banger ‘Stop Screaming’ via Metal Injection

Set To Play Heavy Montreal July 28th

Scheduled to perform at the world-renowned Heavy Montreal on July 28th, Montreal’s MOUNTAIN DUST has a new music video streaming on Metal Injection for their track ‘Stop Screaming’ in support of the band’s latest album “Seven Storms”, which was released last year. The audio for the video was actually recorded live off the floor and is not a lip-synced visual.

The band adds:

“We wanted to make sure that the video captured the heaviness and epic drama of the song and decided that making a truly live video shot from multiple angles in an impressive location like the Corona Theatre was the right approach. The theatre is like the 5th member of the band. It contributes so much vibe and even adds to the sound. We are very happy with the results.”

As regulars on the international festival circuit, they have toured extensively through Europe and made their place on several international charts. The grimey video is packed full of doomy southern rock vibes that is both melodic and heavy, with enough punch to keep listeners moving.

“Five out of five Satan salutes for Mountain Dust…the music breathed, but it breathed like Godzilla…Imagine Zeppelin on their first American tour, pre-superstardom; that’s the impression Mountain Dust left in their wake.” – CultMTL

Watch the video over on Metal Injection: https://metalinjection.net/video/mountain-dust-will-blow-you-away-with-their-live-performance-of-stop-screaming

“Seven Storms” is available on the band’s online store (CD, Vinyl) here, Spotify, Bandcamp, and all other major online retailers.

Track Listing:
1. Seven Storms (3:46)
2. White Bluffs (3:35)

Bio:

Montreal’s Mountain Dust returned in 2018 with a powerful sophomore album entitled “Seven Storms”. The band is on track to further differentiate themselves from the modern rock herd with even more diverse instrumentation and songwriting prowess than their first effort, 2016’s “Nine Years”, which was well received the world over and secured them a deal with German boutique stoner rock imprint Kozmik Artifactz.

“Seven Storms” remains rooted in the heavy rock styles that emerged in the late 1960s/early ’70s but uniquely includes references to emotive soundscapes and cinematic “Spaghetti Western” scores. Vocalist Brendan Mainville continues to use descriptive imagery and clever storytelling to paint vivid pictures of both pain and triumph.

New Album ‘Farewell To The Sun’ Out July 15th

Set to hit the road for a five-day tour (dates below) of Ontario and Quebec with Minnesota’s atmospheric black metallers Ashbringer plus unleash their upcoming album ‘Farewell To The Sun’ on July 15th, Canadian black metal doom fusionists VOW OF THORNS are offering fans a FREE DOWNLOAD of their track ‘Meeting On The Astral Plane’ via their bandcamp at the following link: https://vowofthorns.bandcamp.com/track/meeting-on-the-astral-plane-2

VOW OF THORNS have been conceptualizing albums and pushing the boundary between aggressive and emotional. What once served as an anagram for Kevin Hawthorne’s solo work is now a joint effort with Dustin Richards, where the duo has quickly become one of the most intimidating musical ventures to date. The duo have been constructing songs unanimously and without interruption in a seamless writing process to craft work fueled by their musical and environmental influences. Constantly shifting between disparaging black metal vocals and triumphant guitar hooks dripping with doom-encrusted bass riffs and theatrical drums. The band pairs the forces of black metal and doom, blending the two styles with ease while maintaining a certain sense of tension and uncertainty in the air.

Canadian black metal doom fusionists VOW OF THORNS announce they will be hitting the road for a five-day tour of Ontario and Quebec with Minnesota’s atmospheric black metallers Ashbringer. The tour will kick off on July 12th in Montreal and wrap up on July 16th in London to support VOW OF THORNS‘ upcoming album ‘Farewell To The Sun’ due out July 15th to follow the 2013 debut EP ‘Forest Dweller’.

Their first single and the album’s opening track ‘Meeting On The Astral Plane’ is now streaming at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8kBC0qeuJ0

Guitarist D. Richards comments on the track:

“‘Meeting on the Astral Plane’ tells the story of one man’s escape from physical reality to a place of infinite possibilities; an existence free of mortal boundaries. The escape, however, is only temporary and he must return to his lowly existence and face himself, which he does in the following track ‘Great Abomination’. His experience on the astral plane leads him to believe that death may be the ultimate escape. As our protagonist’s experience progresses so does the music. From the triumphant march of the opening riff to the crushing doom encased ending.”

1. Meeting On The Astral Plane (10:30)
2. Great Abomination (5:07)
3. Farewell To The Sun Part I (4:28)
4. Farewell To The Sun Part II (10:32)
5. Farewell To The Sun Part III (7:51)

About:

Ontario-dwelling black metal doom fusionists Vow of Thorns once served as an anagram for Kevin Hawthorne’s solo work, now a joint effort with Dustin Richards, the duo has quickly become one of the most intimidating musical ventures to date. The band is constantly shifting between disparaging black metal vocals and triumphant guitar hooks dripping with doom-encrusted bass riffs and theatrical drums. The band pairs the forces of black metal and doom, blending the two styles with ease while maintaining a certain sense of tension and uncertainty in the air. Lyrically, the vocals act like a lone wolf trailing off into a forest unwilling to look back and focusing only on what despair lay ahead. With titles like ‘To The Unknown’ and ‘Wood Etched Epitaph’ on their 2013 debut EP ‘Forest Dweller’ the band accurately absorbs elements of the Canadian northern climate and transcribes it into works of musical art.
One is able to catch a glimpse of each influence in Vow of Thorns songwriting and their influences including Woods of Ypres, Agalloch, Drudkh, Opeth, Daylight Dies, and Wolves in the Throne Room. The band is on a journey that slowly takes on darker, lucid, and more despairing elements as they play more shows and write more records. Vow of Thorns is always developing sinister and near-unstable black metal blanketed by an entrancing shroud. The band is currently gearing up to release their next album and first full-length ‘Farewell To The Sun’ slated for July 15, 2016.

About:
What started in the summer of 2012 has managed to grow into a blend of chaotic and dissonant hardcore. Hopeless Youth takes influence of everything from thrash metal, crust punk to even black metal and doom. They manage to keep it rough and in your face, while having you sing along at the same time. The four piece from Montreal, QC manages to make every show as loud, unpredictable, and entertaining as a train wreck. Not to say they fall apart on stage, but rather put themselves in a position to achieve a certain catharsis through violently pouring themselves into every performance. After releasing their debut record ‘Disgust’ in 2014 on Candlelight Records, they’ve returned in 2016 with a new E.P.  ‘Devil, Walk With Me’, which has been released on their own label Rainville Records, as well as digitally via Pluto Records. This new set of songs is sure to turn heads and blow speakers. Enjoy it at your own risk.
