Vela Pulsar Present Dramatically Ethereal Lyric Video For “Reverence Of Being”

Lyric Video Premiere via NoCleanSinging

Out Now! New Album “Memoirs of Unbecoming”

Last year, international melodic black metal act Vela Pulsar released their debut EP “Memoirs of Unbecoming” and now has a lyric video out for the track “Reverence Of Being”. The trio, who live in Toronto, ON and Portland, OR completed the record during the COVID-19 pandemic, which proved challenging and posed difficulties with the various ways it affected their lives.

The band cites that the single is a representation of nearly everything that Vela Pulsar embodies as a band. They explain further:

“’Reverence Of Being’ conveys both a sense of struggle and of overcoming adversity – both physically and within – while being paired with a sense of hope. While not a direct reference, it could be looked at similarly to the Nietzsche quote ‘to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering,’ and both of those aspects being a part of you and are worth revering. This is shown in the music too, through moments that are both dark and foreboding, and warm and uplifting, leaving you with the conclusion that despite all that’s happening, the only thing you can do is persevere. With the inclusion of orchestrations, acoustic guitar passages, both tribal and blast beat drumming, dark atmospheres, a melodic climax and a soaring ending.”

“The album “Memoirs Of Unbecoming” deals with themes of hope, loss, courage, and perseverance in the wake of uncertainty. Stripping away all that we are and seeing what’s left, in the moments that shape us. This is not just presented lyrically, but musically as well through various musical passages that go from uplifting and catchy, to mournful, sorrowful and brooding. According to the band, the music on this album is deeply personal and emotional to them, and they want their fans to experience and connect with the same emotions they’ve put into it.

“Reverence Of Being” is sorrowful, yet hopeful, and is recommended for fans of Aquilus, Uada and Altar Of Plagues.

The video for “Reverence Of Being” can be viewed and heard via its premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

“Memoirs Of Unbecoming” was released on December 8, 2020 and available on the following platforms:

About:
With members residing in both Toronto, ON and Portland, OR, what originally started as a personal project between Ryan Mueller and Samantha Holmes became a more serious band when Samantha proposed doing an album. This led Ryan to recruit his brother (and fellow A Flock Named Murder bandmate) Cam to handle the drums. Thus, Vela Pulsar was born.

At over 30 minutes in length, the debut “Memoirs Of Unbecoming” deals with themes of hope, loss, courage, and perseverance in the wake of uncertainty. Stripping away all that we are and seeing what’s left, in the moments that shape us. This manifested into a swirling and emotional hybrid of symphonic and post-black metal, for fans of Alcest, Uada, Altar Of Plagues, Caladan Brood, Sojourner, Aquilus and Agalloch.

Tanagra has a new single coming out entitled “Seas of Glass”, this serves as a small jolt for the band music-wise, but ultimately fans will still hear the distinctive Tanagra sound coming through.

Like much of their music, “Seas of Glass” tells a story about change through the eyes of a lone protagonist. The first half of the single is calm and sounds almost like it’s from the ’70s, maybe a bit of Hotel California; as the protagonist remembers why he came to the island. He has a nagging feeling that this existence, despite its comfort, isn’t right. As we make our way to the solo the desire to return to the sea is overtaking who he was when he came to the island. By the time we’ve been pounded by a driving riff and solo, he’s come to the realization that he’s in control of the elements. The only thing stopping him from enjoying the battering of the seas is himself; and that gives him the strength to once again venture into the storm. The storms don’t matter, the raging seas are nothing to him; they are just as if they are calm waters. Tanagra shares their thoughts on the single:

“‘Seas of Glass’ is a passionate retort to the ill-fortunes the band has suffered in recent years. Built from the raw emotions of the loss of members and the twin deathblows threatened by Covid and Nagra; all combined to make a do or die moment. We decided we weren’t going to take this lying down. It’d be easy enough to cave when all opportunity is being snuffed out and then you’re kicked while you’re down. It’d be easy to simply go on doing whatever it is we’re doing with our lives and walk away; another defeated minion in someone else’s RPG. But instead, we stand proud and defiant. This is our name, that is our stage, and the storms can rage all they want.”

To date, the band has released two albums, 2015’s “None of This is Real” and 2019’s “Meridiem” keeping a focus on writing complex, reasonably technical metal with clean vocals a la Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. Tanagra’s music writing is diverse and so is the process for each release. In this track, in particular, the vocals were established early and built around entirely; rather than being applied later. This leads it to sound more cohesive.

Clean, melodic, and driving, Tanagra is recommended for fans of Iced Earth, Pyramaze, and Caladan Brood.

About:
Formed out of the love of science fiction, fantasy, and theatrical heavy metal storytelling, TANAGRA hit the Portland, USA metal scene in 2011 and alongside bands like Spellcaster, Excruciator, and Ritual Healing, helped foster a heavy/power metal scene in a city obsessed with black and doom metal. In 2015, after releasing their debut album, None of This is Real, an energetic collection of American power metal showcasing their love for complex arrangements and lengthy songs, they garnered critical acclaim from a multitude of publications around the world and began their rise by opening for acclaimed bands such as Visigoth, Primal Fear, Sanctuary, Vicious Rumors, Judicator, and Blaze Bayley.

In the time following their debut release, the members found a deep love for progressive rock/metal and symphonic black metal. A culling of straight-forward riffing and songwriting gave way to complex yet compelling rhythms interwoven with vibrant vocal arrangements, transcendent soloing, and varying instrumental textures in a lush harmonic landscape.

In 2016, TANAGRA entered the studio with the fruits of their labors to begin recording their ambitious second album, titled Meridiem. Hunkered down across four studios for close to three years, joined by guest musicians on piano, cello, and viola, they refined and crafted their seven compositions to perfection with every minute of studio time spent adding more and more layers of depth, emotion, harmony, and complexity. After recording his parts, Josh Kay moved to Los Angeles and started a new project; Alizarin.

After Meridiem was released to much fanfare, Tom Socia also exited the band quietly. When new troubles of Covid and as a potential deathblow from a legal battle with Nagra loomed, Christopher took a backseat. But now TANAGRA, largely reduced to two and having emerged victorious from that uncertain future, is celebrating with the release of a new single “Seas of Glass.” Introducing Erich Ulmer as lead vocals, heard before in Across the Ancient Desert, and on many backing tracks of much of TANAGRA’s catalog, they hope fans old and new alike will see this as a triumph of will as they step into a new age.

Tanagra’s new single, Seas of Glass, will be released to the world on October 29, 2020, digitally. Available from most distribution sites like Spotify, Bandcamp, and iTunes.

“Progressive Metal fans, rest assured that your 2019 is in good hands as Prog quintet TANAGRA unleashes “Meridiem”. Filled with vibrant melodies, this seven-track record will take you to a breathtaking journey through an eargasmic musical psychedelic.” – Metal Temple

“Meridiem is another jewel in the trunk of America’s continually-burgeoning power metal scene… Tanagra is something to be loved by music fans, cherished by power metal fans and salivated over by fans of progressive metal.” – Last Rites

“I’m thoroughly impressed with this sophomore. It’s a complete transformation of this band into a wholly new form and they’ve earned every single little bit of it.” – Toilet ov Hell

“Tanagra’s Meridiem will likely please and intrigue fans of American progressive power metal, thanks to the band’s ambitious and lightly complex songwriting.” – Danger Dog Reviews

“There’s an ethereal, otherworldly feel in parts of Tanagra’s compositions that gives the music real presence, and the epic nature of the material will raise the hairs on the back of your neck a fair few times if you allow yourself to become fully immersed in the grandeur of it all. Highly recommended!” – Sentinel Daily

0 Tanagra Successfully Resolves Trademark Dispute With Swiss Corporation Nagra

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – August 17, 2020

Tanagra Successfully Resolves Trademark Dispute With Swiss Corporation Nagra

You may remember back in February of this year, Portland’s Tanagra was having a legal battle with Swiss audio recording company Nagra and the parent company Kudelski. The issue arose when Nagra felt the metal band’s trademark application may conflict with their trademark based on a similar, yet different name. Facing the possibility of having to rebrand, Tanagra began liquidating their current merchandise and braced themselves for the worst.

When metal fans around the world began to make noise about this situation, the corporation took notice and agreed to negotiate with the band. With the assistance of Sevag Demirjian and Armen Martin of Foundation Law, Tanagra emerged victorious six months later with Nagra giving up their claim. Tanagra makes the following statement:

“Most of the agreement is confidential, but it’s largely uninteresting. We resolved the issue on amicable bases. This is a pretty good win for us in that we’ll keep our trademark and Nagra has dropped their opposition. We want to give a huge thank you to our fans who supported us through all of this.”

With their sails full of wind again, Tanagra has hinted that they have really cool stuff coming up in the next six months, so keep your eyes peeled.

You can find the band’s latest album “Meridiem” on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music.

0 UPDATE: Kudelski’s Trademark Dispute Against Power Metal Band TANAGRA Meets Unexpected Resistance

Last week the news came out that Portland’s Tanagra had newfound legal troubles with Swiss company Nagra / Kudelski Group. For those unfamiliar, Kudelski believes Tanagra‘s trademark interferes with their trademark “Nagra.” Because of the vast legal expenses required to fight the dispute, Tanagra decided to liquidate its merch in preparation for a possible rebranding.

Erich Ulmer from Tanagra talked about the overwhelming support they have received from metal fans around the world.

“We have been astounded at the response; the community is the only reason the corporation is negotiating at all. Fans have come together and they’re saying things like ‘They [Nagra / Kudelski Group] need to drop it completely’ and the community is right. There is no reason we can’t reach a co-existence agreement.”

But it seems that negotiating with the corporation was futile for the band. As reported on Tanagra‘s Facebook page, Kudelski repeatedly offered the same deal, one that would require Tanagra to forfeit all but a portion of their live performance trademark. Upon this announcement, however, a second uproar caught the ears of unexpected allies.

Erich explained that Foundation Law Group has extended their services pro bono, via the trademark expertise of Sevag Demirjian and the support of the CEO of the firm, Armen Martin.

“It turns out there are a couple of metalheads at Foundation Law Group who don’t appreciate the overreach of giant corporations. It honestly feels like Tolkien is writing this.”

With a league of fans howling and their ranks bolstered, Tanagra now stands a chance at maintaining their trademarks.

Tanagra (Portland, USA) has had a bittersweet start to 2020 with the revelation that a Swiss company was filling a trademark dispute. This news comes a few weeks after they were voted on Reddit.com as having the best power metal album of the year for their 2019 full length “Meridiem”.

“It’s pretty funny that one week we’re getting AoY on Reddit and the next we’re being nuked from orbit by a company we’ve never heard of. Regardless of what happens with the trademark dispute, we have to assume that when it’s over we’ll get a cease-and-desist and be dead in the water; We’d exist at the behest of a foreign company who obviously couldn’t give a damn about us, and that’s no way to live.” says bassist Erich Ulmer.

The contesting entity, Nagra, is an audio company based in Switzerland, which is opposing the portion of Tanagra’s application to trademark the band name that involves selling branded merchandise and performing live under the moniker.

The proceedings went live as of Monday, January 20, 2020, but the prog/power metal quintet is not looking to fight an uphill legal battle, instead, they are looking to unload as much merch as they can while they still can. As Ulmer explains:

“Rather than sit on our physical albums and shirts we’re changing everything to ‘pay what you want’ plus shipping. We have hundreds of copies ‘Meridiem’ and ‘None of This is Real’ that will be unsellable soon and we’d rather have them in the hands of metalheads around the world. This is a small piece of history and it’s likely we’ll never be able to print under this name again!”

Tanagra merch is available exclusively on their Bandcamp, through which fans will also be able to join the mailing list for updates on the band’s future, member’s side projects and any name changes.

Portland, OR’s TANAGRA has posted a new lyric video for their track ‘Etheric Alchemy’ in support of their latest album “Meridiem” released this past April. The video is being premiered on HeavyBlogIsHeavy.com at the following link: http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2019/05/23/premiere-hear-tanagra-perform-etheric-alchemy/

The band adds:

“Etheric Alchemy is a perfect blend of our newer proggy symphonic sound and the rockin’ heavy power metal of None of this is Real. Like an overture of our entire career, all our stylistic tendencies are represented in this song; Crazy time switches, lush orchestrations, and harmonized vocals co-exist with driving headbanging riffs, shredding guitar solos, and aggressive singing. It also has some of the nerdiest lyrical content we’ve ever written.”

Refining and crafting the seven multi-layered compositions on their latest full length “Meridiem” to perfection, TANAGRA have created a power metal album packed with depth, emotion, harmony, and complexity all recorded across four studios for close to three years with guest musicians on piano, cello, and viola,

The band explains the album:

“‘Meridiem’ was us taking primary influence from classic prog rock and orchestral black metal alongside our classic power metal sound, with symphonic arrangements, multi-layered choral vocals, and moody mellotrons combining to make an atmosphere that sounds like nothing else. The diverse set of songs have a little something for everyone, from furious blast beats to smooth jazz piano solos and everything in between. Our main ambitions when writing were to make everything proggy and epic, and we pushed the songs as hard as we could on that. It’s a special album for all of us, with the meaning behind every riff and lyric. We’re excited to finally unleash it upon the world, and we hope people enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed writing it.”

“Meridiem” is available on Spotify, CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp.

Hunkered down across four studios for close to three years, joined by guest musicians on piano, cello, and viola, Portland’s Tanagra has been refining and crafting the seven multi-layered compositions on their upcoming album “Meridiem” to perfection. Set for release this Friday, April 26th, the power metal album packed with depth, emotion, harmony, and complexity is being premiered exclusively today on Bravewords at the following link: http://bravewords.com/news/exclusive-tanagra-premiere-meridiem-album-stream

The band comments:

“Meridiem” will be available on April 26, 2019 through Spotify, CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon.

Album pre-order is available on the band’s Bandcamp.

Formed out of the love of science fiction, fantasy, and theatrical heavy metal storytelling, TANAGRA hit the Portland, USA metal scene in 2011 with epic, symphonic, progressive power metal with lyrical content about original fantasy/sci-fi settings, Magic: The Gathering, historical tales, and other nerdy themes.

In 2015, they released their debut album; None of This is Real, an energetic collection of American power metal showcasing their love for complex arrangements and lengthy songs which garnered critical acclaim from a multitude of publications around the world.

In the time following their debut release, the members found a deep love for progressive rock/metal and symphonic black metal, and in writing new material found ways to combine the sounds of bands like IQ, Anekdoten, Caladan Brood, and Borknagar into their existing American power metal framework.

In 2016, TANAGRA entered the studio with the fruits of their labors to begin recording their ambitious second album, titled Meridiem, slated for global release April 26, 2019.

Hunkered down across four studios for close to three years, joined by guest musicians on piano, cello, and viola, Portland’s Tanagra has been refining and crafting the seven multi-layered compositions on their upcoming album “Meridiem” to perfection. The release, due out on April 26th, is power metal packed with depth, emotion, harmony, and complexity.

Previously sharing the album’s title track as their first single this past March, TANAGRA is unveiling to fans “Sydria”, the second release off the upcoming full-length. The track is a straight-forward banger with a full-on Hammond organ and some synthwave inspired shimmering. It’s a prog-apocalypse with most of the riffs being written in 5/4 timing to make an epic sing-along tune.

Teaming up with MetalInsider.net, “Sydria” can be heard at https://www.metalinsider.net/new-music/song-premiere-tanagra-sydria

The band comments:

“The second track off ‘Meridiem’, ‘Sydria’ is an energetic four-minute banger with great sing-along potential! If you’ve ever wondered what Euro power metal would sound like in 5/4 with baritone lead vocals, this must be it. Lyrically, this song ties into “The Undying Light” and “Tyranny of Time” from our first album, following our guitarist’s Steven’s story about a race of beings struggling to recall a lost homeworld to which they can never return. This song features both vocalist Tom and guitarist Steven on lead vocals throughout, with our bassist Erich joining in on the choruses! Some simple Hammond organ pads and sparkling synth arpeggios round out the arrangement, reinforcing the song’s energy.”

“Meridiem” will be available on April 26, 2019 through Spotify, CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon.

Album pre-order is available on the band’s Bandcamp.

Portland Power Metal TANAGRA Reveals Enticingly Epic ‘Meridiem’ Off New Album via Metal-Rules

Debuting the 11 and a half minute epic title track as the first single, the song displays much of the same ambition that guided Tanagra in their three years crafting “Meridiem”. It’s the perfect overture to open the release, distilling the entire album’s essence of dynamic lengthy songs, soaring guitar solos, majestic orchestrations, and powerful choral vocals into a single track containing everything from mournful piano passages to driving power metal riffing with a dash of symphonic black metal.

Teaming up with Metal-Rules, here’s the first listen of “Meridiem” – https://www.metal-rules.com/2019/03/08/portland-power-metal-tanagra-reveals-enticingly-epic-meridiem-off-new-album-via-metal-rules-com/

The band comments:

“It’s pretty unanimous that this is one of the best things we’ve ever written. It’s really close to all our hearts. Initially, ‘Meridiem’ started as a spiritual successor to 10:04 PM off of None Of This Is Real. As the song began to take shape it became more than just a spiritual successor, instead, it seemed that 10:04 pm existed so that one-day Meridiem would take form. Really as time went on they shared little connection musically and lyrically but at its core shared the collaborative nature that we had come to know as Tanagra. This is the quintessential Tanagra song.”

“Meridiem” will be available on April 26, 2019, through Spotify, CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon.

Album pre-order is available on the band’s Bandcamp.
