Edmonton, AB’s VAN HALST is a fierce, empowering force of hard rock fused with metal.  A project, which began as a solo artist for whom the band is named after — Kami Van Halst, has since become a full group producing socially conscious, lyrical tracks that focus on disenfranchised and marginalized populations. The band’s influences stay true to goth rock with Kami Van Halst demonstrating an agile vocal delivery in combination with pummeling growls. Lyrically, the band draws from black metal due to its focus on people suffering from isolation and rising to overcome the preconceptions of a judgmental society. In This Moment’s industrial fusion remains a primary influence for Van Halst, employing a sampler, synthesizer, and distorted vocals.

Kami Van Halst dominates as the vocalist performing both growls and soaring vocals (Surviving Suzanne), Scott Greene (Derina Harvey Band/Dirty Pool) and Strathon J. Bajowsky (Havok Way) craft the guitar work while Brendan McMillan (bass) (My Darkest Days) and Brett Seaton (drums) (Cultured by Fire) drive the rhythm section of the band. Kami’s range and virtuosic vocal ability always captivates an audience and her attitude on stage truly delivers the meaning behind the songs. The main writing forces for the band are Kami and Scott working together to give listeners a vivid image of social injustices. The band’s live performance is a theatric experience as the utilize full-costumes, make-up and stage props.

Their debut album ‘World of Make Believe’ is now available as of March 4th and can be picked up on iTunes and Bandcamp plus streaming at the following links below.

Vocalist Kami Van Halst comments about the album:
“We are so excited to be releasing this album. It’s been in the works for years and to finally have it out is an amazing feeling. Thank-you for all the support and we’ll see you on the road!”

Cinematic Metal Orchestra OPERUS Posts New Lyric Video ‘Maya And The Wolf’, Supporting Sonata Arctica In Toronto March 31st

Upcoming Show Dates:

March 31 – Toronto, ON @ The Opera House w/ Sonata Arctica – Event info

EP Stream – Opus I – http://operus.bandcamp.com/album/opus-i

Toronto, ON based OPERUS creates compositions of heavy classical influenced metal without restriction on creativity in expressing thoughts and emotions from the brainchild of band founder Oscar Rangel. Unleashing their four track debut EP ‘Opus I’ during November 2015, the band have posted a new lyric video for their track ‘Maya And The Wolf’, which can be viewed at the following link below.

“I believe ‘Maya & the Wolf ‘ is the most interesting song in the album, its sound is very classical, yet the story telling in the lyrics and the instrumentation gives it folkish undertones as well. This is the song we chose to produce a lyric video for because we believe this is the most “relatable” song in the EP and yet it still sounds heavy and it is clear that its part of a metal album. The instrumental part in the middle is one of the many “band solo” sections I have worked over the years using mainly the counterpoint composition technique, where all the instruments play different melodies at once to build up a very interesting sounding passage.” comments band founder Oscar Rangel.

Listen and watch ‘Maya And The Wolf’ – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BStl55-0AQ

2. Fate’s Pantomime (5:17)
3. The Book of Shadows (3:56)

EP Length: 21:19

About:
Toronto, ON based OPERUS creates compositions of heavy classical influenced metal without restriction on creativity in expressing thoughts and emotions from the brainchild of band founder Oscar Rangel.

“I have always been a huge fan of performing arts, not only music, but also theater, circus, and contemporary dance, some ballet, etc. I always wanted to combine as many of my influences as possible that includes many metal sub-genres and other disciplines, hence I started roaming towards the idea of “Opera”, but more in the classical sense, and less in the modern “metal opera” movement (Avantasia, Aina, and many more).” says Rangel.

First composing in Mexico before relocating to Toronto, ON, the solo project at the time went under the name ‘Masquerade of Opera’ and went on to record a demo in 2009 entitled “Winter Nightmare”, which was named after Rangel’s first cold winter of that year in Canada.

Fast forward five years later to 2014, Rangel who is also a former member of Annihilator and bassist for Mastery, changed the name of his project to OPERUS to better describe it and push towards creating a bigger production.

““Operus” Stems from the combination of two highly “classical” words: “Opus”, which was used in the previous times to mark musical creations (Opus 1 = creation 1). And “Opera” which is a form of theater where the script is performed singing.” says Rangel.

Recruiting Will Patterson (Vocals) (ex-Anurysm, ex-Exile), Robin Howe (Cello), Wojtek Sokolowski (Bass/Vocals) (Eclipse Eternal), Rob Holden (Guitar) (ex-Left Hand Creation) and Alan Madhavan (Drums) (ex-Nephelium) (now replaced by drummer J.J. Tartaglia (Skull Fist, Final Trigger)), the group recorded their first EP ‘Opus I’ with all instrumentation written by Rangel (Guitar/Vocals).

The debut EP ‘Opus I’ was unleashed during November 2015 and features four tracks of cinematic themes of powerful metal to fill fans mind with images and stories with a sound based on lyrics from philosophical topics such as what it means to be human and alive in a world full of violence, greed plus our evolution as a species.

“We felt these tracks display the most of what we sound like. We wanted our debut EP to portrait as much of the textures and colours we put in our music. Plus “Opus I” as it states our first creation is an “introduction letter” for everyone to know who we are, we made it all ourselves and now that we have something to show we are working on a bigger project.” comments Rangel.

With the completion of their EP, Rangel has several albums worth of finished material ready to go for their debut full length that they plan to record later this year to add to their performance that goes beyond a music show or a metal gig, but a full on metal orchestrated experience.

Initially never planning to release his music compositions beyond the borders of just song writing, freelance drummer / instructor Sean Lang was urged by his circle of musician friends whom heard his material to take his creativity to the next level.

The outcome is Seven Year Storm, which showcases Lang’s unique sound, music arrangements written entirely by him plus guitarist Dean Lamb (Archspire) whom handles all of the mind-bending guitar leads and solos. Everything comes together into songs that are tight and heavy, melodic and groovy, technical yet memorable.

“I am very pleased to unleash the first installment of my musical vision, entitled Aion I. It is available for immediate download on Bandcamp, and is coming to all major digital distributors in the coming days and weeks, including iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify. “Combining atmospheric keyboards and djenty rhythms, and adding a slight touch of jazz rock and loads of melody, this EP should definitely appeal to fans of modern progressive music….the musicianship and songwriting is top notch, and the production is also extremely professional for a self-released EP. The production nicely allows for the sweeping layers of sound to shine through in a balanced and harmonic way. I definitely hope to hear more from Lang in the future. “Aion I” should appeal to fans of Animals As Leaders, Chimp Spanner, and Planet X.” – Metal Music Archives

“…on this five song EP, you have not only some fluid, inventive modern metal but also one with a very strong focus on melody, ambient space, subtle uses of keyboards to add an orchestral touch to the album along with a damn good attempt at an emotional connection to the listener. Which is a very pleasant and welcome surprise when you hear that this is a drummer-led recording….I’m also very glad to see more exciting, very modern instrumental metal that is focused on composition and dynamics rather than super-fast shredding which has been so prevalent over the past few decades.” – Prog Metal Zone

“Aion I is instrumental metal with a rather video-gamey quality to it, in that it’s driven by very enigmatic melodies, and the music thrives on syncopated grooves and polyrhythms, with gorgeous leads and atmosphere.  It’s captivating, the songs are concise, yet have a lot of substance.  Aion I is the band’s first output, an EP, and it’s quite good if you’re into instrumental metal of any sort.” – No Clean Singing

“If you like instrumental rock with elements of metal mixed in, you’ve got it with Aion I. I really love the guitar solos in Nazca Lines, although the album as a whole leans more towards drums, the inspiration of drum instructor Sean Lang. The EP is a quick listen at five songs and it’s worth your time. And check out the video for the song Dyatlov!” – Metalhead Blog

About:

Harnessing their crazy sense of humor and love of all things metal, vocalist Rob “Rawrb” Kersey and guitarist Josh “The J” Key joined forces with drummer Alex “Shmalex” Dontre and bassist  Matty J “Moose” to create Pyschostick, a band they’ve coined as humorcore. With hilarious lyrics, heavy riffs, notorious stage antics and high-energy performances, the band has caused millions of laughs around the world and hundreds of mosh pits across the US of A, often simultaneously, since its birth in Phoenix, AZ in 2000.

Now residing in Chicago, IL, with four full-length albums behind them – “We Couldn’t Think of a Title” (2006), their holiday album “The Flesh Eating Rollerskate Holiday Joyride” (2007), “Sandwich” (2009),  and “Space Vampires vs. Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D” (2011), the almost 100 percent do-it-yourself laugh factory, Psychostick returns with their signature sound (Chimaira, Machine Head and Hatebreed sexing Tenacious D and Weird Al Yankovic) to showcase their latest offering, the crowd funded album ‘IV: Revenge of The Vengeance’ (fan thank you video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSeQHqMCfJI) due out on November 4, 2014. Featuring a hilarious track listing that includes previously released singles the beard anthem ‘Obey The Beard’ and popular ‘Dog Like Socks’ plus new tracks such as ‘Quack Kills’, ‘So. Heavy’, ‘Blue Screen’, and a tribute to the 21st century’s most beloved action super hero ‘Bruce Campbell’. Psychostick are crazy to share with fans many more comedy sing-a-longs on the road and more!

“IV: Revenge of the Vengeance isn’t just a Psychostick album, it’s a Psychostick experience. They really went all out on this album. Not all of it makes sense and some of it may be a little over the top, but that’s what makes this band so great- they aren’t afraid to push the envelope of ridiculousness. In fact, they bask in it. Get ready, world. Get ready for the revenge of the vengeance and one of the most action-packed metal albums ever concocted. Rating: 9/10″ – Front Row Report

“The creator of “Humorcore” knock one out of the fucking park with this one (IV: Revenge of The Vengeance). If you’re in a band trying to do parody and funny Metal songs stop right now, you’re just embarrassing yourself, you will not be able to dethrone Psychostick. ” – Rock Hard Place

“In ‘IV: Revenge of The Vengeance’ you have more craziness and beard than ever before, weighing in at a whopping twenty one beard bending tracks of strictly tongue in cheek craziness and general insanity with song titles ranging from ‘NSFW’, ‘Quack Kills’, ‘Loathe Thy Neighbor’ and the previously unleashed  ‘Dogs Like Socks’ and ‘Obey The Beard’ as well as a cover of Kenny Loggins ‘Danger Zone’. Add a couple of cameos from Bill Manspeaker, the founder of Green Jello and you can imagine the types of craziness that is unleashed once play is pressed. Simply put, ‘IV: Revenge of The Vengeance’ is beardtastic and in the words of Psychostick ‘Obey The Beard’.” – Firebrand After Darkness Mag

“The opening set by Psychostick — a band best known in Kansas City for its 98.9 The Rock staple “Beer!” — was deeply amusing. Heavy metal is ripe for parody, and the jokers in the Arizona band mercilessly mock the genre’s inherent silliness. Psychostick’s presence reflected the night’s theme of good, dirty fun.” – Kansas City Star

“”The grooves are infectious and easy to nod along to”- Metalunderground.com

“”Psychostick continues to be the most fun band in rock’n’roll with “Sandwich,” twenty-four tracks that will have you banging your head while you laugh your ass off at the same time.” – RoughEdge.com

“I found myself laughing out loud, track after ridiculous track, eager to hear what nonsense was to follow.” – Metal-Rules.com

“If you like humorous metal like Polkadot Cadaver you might just laugh yourself to death by this new album (Space Vampires vs Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D by Psychostick. It’s actually very like a comedy show on metal music. Totally awesome and insane.” – MetalLikey

“A crazy musical storm truly one of the most entertaining and energetic show’s we’ve covered in a long time and most defiantly the most humorous!” – OrlandoBands.com

“Do you want to metal? Psychostick wants to metal. On their newest, heaviest and funniest effort Sandwich, the clowned princes of humorcore metal their mad-hatted heads off.” – HeavyMetal.About.com

“Listening to a Psychostick album is like eavesdropping on college bros riffing on each other or just jamming in their garage.” – ThatDevilMusic.com

“When listening to a Psychostick album, you can usually expect two things: outstanding guitar riffs and hooks and then, and most importantly, you can almost always expect to laugh…at least once or twice.” – TheFrontReport.com

“Psychostick is notorious for a few things, two of which being off-the-wall album titles (2003’s We Couldn’t Think of a Title” and 2009’s Sandwich) and hilarious lyrics meshed with face-melting instrumentals.” – TheFrontRowReport.com

“…the Weird Al Yankovic of Metal.” – examiner.com

“…the more you listen, the funnier and harder it becomes.” – rocknycliveandrecorded.com

“It’s a magical moment when you see a band doing exactly what they love to do.” – TheRealAtlanta.com

“Psychostick wrapped more amazingness into about 35 minutes than I have ever really seen in concert.” – behindthehype.com

“Psychostick may come off as idiot savants considering a lot of what they sing about are everyday common crap such as oranges, hoagies, salsa and taking showers, but the Texas taco munchers who once released an album called We Couldn’t Think of a Title in 2006 are smarter than you think.” – The Metal Minute

“Psychostick release another solid album with over-the-top hilarity.” Sputnik Music – Review of Sandwich

Calgary, AB progressive power metal quartet VIATHYN is proud to unleash their new album ‘Cynosure’, officially out today, October 7th. Producedby VIATHYN’s Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills), ‘Cynosure’ features nine epic assaulting tracks with intense guitar shredding and infectious chants that blend prog thrash, melo-death and power metal influences. With VIATHYN‘s 2010 ‘The Peregrine Way’ debut album praised for its innovative song-writing and fresh comparison to today’s power metal, it was only a matter of time for guitarist Jacob Wright to launch into song-writing mode and compose a majority of the material that would be recorded for this second full-length. Even through hindrances such as studio closings, computer crashes, losing a jam space, and a flood, VIATHYN was able to record their second album between August 2012 and February 2014. With the addition of 7-string guitars, some growl vocals, and an evolving influence, Cynosure’s songs are faster, more technical, and heavier, while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence ready to be unleashed upon the world.

“After 4 long years, thousands of man-hours, and more than a couple cases of beer, Cynosure is finally here! The entire process was an adventure, but we’re extremely proud of the end result. Hopefully the fact that the album is so dense and busy can buy us some time to try and top it with album 3!! Thanks to everyone that helped make this happen.” comments guitarist Jacob Wright.

About:

A chance encounter at a local record store in Calgary, Alberta between guitarist Jacob Wright, who was just looking for work, and vocalist Tomislav Crnkovic, who happened to be an employee of said shop, resulted in a friendship that gradually led to the creation of progressive power metal outfit Viathyn in 2006 with a solidified live and recording line up in 2009.

Playing off the word ‘Leviathan’, the guys settled on ‘Viathyn’, which has no actual definition in the English language, but when referring to the band can be taken to mean ‘progressive, melodic, grandiose, innovative and emotional’.

Forgoing the strict rules and structure common to the genre, the four-piece is known for its ability to write songs that grow and progress naturally and shift tone unapologetically without falling victim to common tropes. Building on their first full-length album, 2010’s The Peregrine Way, Viathyn is now gearing up to unveil its second record, Cynosure produced by vocalist/guitarist Tomislav Crnkovic plus mixed and mastered by Sacha Laskow (Divinity, Every Hour Kills).

“The literal definition of ‘cynosure’ is a focal point or an object that serves to guide,” explains Wright. “Each track focuses upon a character that is either affected by or acts as an agent of chaos and the message we wanted to express is how small and insignificant our actions and petty squabbles are within the grand scale of the universe. It’s kind of a backwards way of trying to show that we as humans should be humble and respectful to each other!”

Cynosure promises to be faster, more technical and heavier than its predecessor while maintaining a constant melodic and progressive presence – can you handle it?

– 30 –

“A pristine production and moody artwork round off a phenomenal album that takes the best of prog and power metal, adds some celtic influence, and an outstanding feeling for flow, dynamics and melodies that catapults both Viathyn and Cynosure into the uppermost echelons of the genre. At times reminding me of Danish masters Wuthering Heights, the Calgarians are putting bar high and any fan of prog power!” – Metal Observer

“An exploration of disillusion, discord, affliction, enlightenment, and grandeur as seen through nine different storytellers, Viathyn live for a more European-oriented montage of neo-classical runs, twin guitar harmonies, double bass fury, and the occasional mid-tempo transition that can be highly folk or Celtic influenced…Cynosure is proof again that our neighbors to the north can rival the best European acts going in this faithful, happy sub-genre.” – Dead Rhetoric

“From the galloping opener “Ageless Stranger” to the long, swirling, fist-pumping closer “Cynosure”, this album has everything a fan of power metal could want. Guitar solos to die for, pounding rhythm, riffs that stick in your head for days, and a vocalist that impresses you with every song. It is simply an awe inspiring album, on several levels of musicianship, storytelling, and even visually with artwork that is absolutely beautiful.” – Crown of Viserys

“An atmospheric metal album with grand vocal work and guitar structure.” – Headbang or GFTO

“Cynosure is an album with plenty to offer fans of the Progressive Power Metal sound, as VIATHYN have a great talent for making melodies and their songwriting abilities have enabled them to make an album full of long songs without getting boring.” – Metal Temple

“the songwriting is masterful and the songs are tight and fun” – The Blood Shed

“VIATHYN play majestic epic progressive power metal, with a tinge of folk metal, prog rock and with a slight sprinkling of thrash added to the mix for good measure” – All About The Rock

“Second on the album is “The Coachman”, which was released a few weeks ago. Hands down, my favorite song on this album. I always love a band that has a story-line within the song, and even from the start the lyrics are superb. Vocalist Tomislav Crnkovic has one of the smoothest and grooviest melodic lines I have heard from a Canadian band, he’s got the highs that can scare a cat – and he’s got a metal as fuck name.” – Morning Metal – CKCU 93.1 FM (Ottawa)

“Viathyn executes each song perfectly, on game and completely in your face. The production quality on this album is excellent, which I believe was done at Perfect Fifth Studios – one of Calgary’s premier metal recording studios…The songwriting on this album, especially this track (Cynosure), proves that this band pays attention to what they’re doing and how well they want to the overall vibe to leave on you.” – Ottawa Showbox

“Cynosure sees Viathyn move from a solid foundation to having released a mature batch of power metal songs that meet or exceed my (very high) expectations for front line power metal veterans like Labyrinth, Orden Ogan, and DGM. I give this album an extremely high recommendation to those that like heavy, fast power metal with extremely satisfying twists and quirks. The unparalleled lyricism: often dark, sometimes abstract, and always very vivid, is bound to appeal to progressive fans as well. You just can’t lose with this one.” – Black Wind Metal

“Viathyn advances the progressive elements of metal music gracefully articulating the acoustic canvas with intense rhythm, accentuated with electrical precision, weaving a spirited discography of ageless compositions.” – Metal Canvas – CHUO 89.1 FM (Ottawa)

“Canada’s Viathyn play a hybrid of melodic, heavy progressive metal with hints of classical elements thrown in for good measure.

“Cynosure” is an amalgamation of all the best elements taken from progressive metal, heavy metal, classical influences within their guitar leads and playing. Their clean vocals, with the occasional rough vocals on few of the songs definitely brings out this quartet’s total musical essence on their newest CD “Cynosure”. There is not one dull moment on this grandiose produced album (it sounds very big in the production and mix), which feels like you’re experiencing this band in a live setting. They’re a four-piece group, but certainly sound like a ten member band, with their whole slew of playing styles and varied musical influences.” – Explicitly Intense

“it becomes clear these are people who have not only mastered their instruments but also have a way above average sense of music.” – Lords of Metal

“Part of what makes “Cynosure” such an interesting listen is that it draws influence from a variety of sources.” – Skull Fracturing Metal

“Long time coming to get to this point. Here it is. ‘Somnia’ in full. We are trying to find the words to express how ecstatic we are that its finally come. We have worked very hard in this album and we hope you enjoy it in full as much as we enjoyed creating it. We are proud to be teaming up with Decibel to bring you this full album stream.” comments vocalist Jordan Dorge.

Driven by a thirst for evolution, LAIKA spent two years constructing and writing its upcoming full-length album full with melodic hooks, ominous keys and lyrics that are bound to get stuck in listeners’ heads to an almost maddening degree.  Founded in 2009 and named after the Soviet dog who became one of the first animals to travel to space, the Winnipeg, MB six-piece return after a small hiatus since unleashing their self release in 2010 that saw the band hit the road hard and share the stage with the likes of All Shall Perish, Kataklysm, Necronomicon, Unleash the Archers and many more.  So brace yourself, as this fall, LAIKA will hit the scene hard, just like they did all those years ago.

“Laika combine the Gothenburg sound with a North American groove and intensity, the result is a giant slab of kick ass melodic death metal. Sommia the groups’ second full length release consists of 8 finely crafted songs and a dreamy and eloquent intro track called “The Restless Mind”. There some great guitar work on “Somnia” especially on tracks like “Fidelity” and the albums lone instrumental “Dream of Nothing”. The musicianship on this release is all-around solid. Vocalist Jordan Dorge has a powerful growl that cuts through the bands layered sound and the rhythm section add some crushing heaviness…a damn good melodic death metal album. If you like the classic Gothenburg sound do yourself a favor and pick up the latest release from Laika.” – Extreme Metal Television

“This Canadian sextet play old school inspired death metal, with synthesizer elements thrown in with the more melodic and heavier guitar parts. Laika, is not solely focused on playing fast and crazy, as their music contains tons of substance for starters, and their music is as unique as possible with synths used as a chilling backdrop to their progressive death metal.” – Explicitly Intense

“For an unsigned and independent band with only one other album under their belt, this really is a phenomenal release, and it really shines a light on how promising Laika’s future could be…the melodies and hooks they employ are the shining stars here.” – Metal Observer

“Melodic death metal after Dark Tranquillity’s heart with a touch of Dimmu Borgir for good measure.” – Eternal Terror

“We’ve been following the promising young group since 2011 and watching the development of this release with much anticipation.” – Metal Underground

“The track (Escalation of Terror) features tight riffs with old school influences injected into a modern approach.” – Bloody-Disgusting

“The music is energetic and soaring, building to an impassioned crescendo, but although it’s propelled by a flurry of jabbing, pulsating riffs, it also includes elements that aren’t exactly standard fare for melodic death metal — rock beats instead of blast beats, and a conjoining of rippling keyboards and grumbling bass notes that provide a captivating accent. Jordan Dorge’s mid-ranged, feral howls also provide a venomous edge without obscuring the lyrics. But what really seals the deal is the band’s knack for writing memorable melodies: “The Immortal” will stick in your head and beckon you back for more. It’s a strong teaser for a strong album.” – No Clean Singing

“Pounding Death Metal songs makes this album a worthwhile buy for the personal Death Metal collection.” – Metal-Only

Vancouver, BC prog metallers QUARTERED has teamed up with Idobi Howl for the premiere of their latest single ‘She Sees Colour’ from their upcoming album ‘Eyes And Ears’ due out on October 7th.

“She Sees Color is one of my personal favorites on this album. Before ever actually writing the album or going in to the studio to record it, I spent some time with someone personal who has synesthesia, the ability to hear/ see color when they listen to music. You know it was just one of those crazy moments when every word, and every action means something to you, that creates that still frame in your head that I will never forget, but you haven’t noticed yet. So in the end it lead me to wanting to recreate those colors again.” comments vocalist Greg Williams.

She Sees Colour – http://idobi.com/exclusive/quartered-she-sees-colour/

Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity. Now the band is ready to unleash their third record, ‘Eyes and Ears’ they co-produced with Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound and mark their return to the spotlight to follow up 2010’s ‘Walk Like A Ghost’ that was produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against) and took the band on multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines).

In additional news, Quartered will be performing at this year’s third annual Rain City Throwdown presented by Denyss McKnight of Crowsnest Productions and Cariboo Brewing at the Rickshaw Theatre on Sept 27th in Vancouver, BC alongside bands Take The Earth Beneath Us, The Body Politic, Wolfborne, Drop The Hate. Full details can be found here.

“Rain City Throwdown was an event born out of support for the local metal scene.  With a lack of mediums for bands to gain exposure, this was a no-brainer. An event for us by us.  One night of the year where we showcase Vancouver talent.  This event has given the local heavier acts a chance to perform together for one night, on one stage, for the fans. See you at the front, bring them dancing shoes.” comments vocalist Greg Williams

Show Dates:

Sept 27 – Vancouver, BC – Rickshaw Theatre (Rain City Throwdown)

About:

Thanks to a group of high school friends fusing their influences into one cohesive sound and the flip of a coin to help choose between band names, Vancouver progressive metal band Quartered’s moniker has certainly given itself meaning over the years.

Inspired by bands like Deftones, Tool and Thrice from early on – Quartered’s focus has always been on conveying moody emotion and mixing heavy grooves, experimental riffs, and hook-laden bridges to paint a picture with lyrics that tell a story while keeping one major goal in mind: longevity.

Following multiple Canadian and international tours, one of which saw them playing with Lamb of God and Testament at the 2010 Pulp Summer Slam festival (held in Manila, Philippines) and two full-length albums, The Falls of Autumn and Walks Like a Ghost, produced by Ben Kaplan (worked on projects with Mudvayne, Chevelle, Alexisonfire and Rise Against), Quartered is ready to unleash its third record, Eyes and Ears, on October 7th that was produced by them and Royce Whittaker at Spinnaker Sound.

Heavily influenced by “memories and how senses play a big part in connecting and helping us remember parts of our lives,” the title Eyes and Ears was chosen because “you can’t un-see the things you’ve witnessed and hearing is such a powerful way to trigger memories,” explains vocalist Greggor Williams.

““Blink Blink Flash”, as an intro, shows the trademark vocals from Greggor Williams, deviating from screams to melody in a matter of seconds. All the while, clanging and heavily distorted guitars crash around. I have to say, Quartered reminded of a hybrid of Glassjaw and Every Time I Die – that aint a bad thing!!” – All About The Rock

“I just love how the music is rich of nuances and rhythmic riffs. Not to mention the superb production. Highlights : “Blink blink flash”, “She sees colour”, “Take me there tonight”.” – Palace of Rock

“Their intense brand of progressive metal is what’s lacking in music today, the real deal….Quartered is, hands down, one a a very few select bands in this country that will go somewhere.” – Danger, 99.3FM The Fox (Vancouver, BC)

“Their live show has the energy of Alexisonfire, while their music reminds me of early Deftones. They are definitely one of Vancouver’s top 5 heavy bands.” – Christian Aldred, Rednyne Productions (Vancouver, BC)

“…put them on stage – as in their upcoming CD release performance at Vancouver’s media club – and they’ll win new converts with their sheer impassioned intensity alone.” – Peach Arch News (Surrey, BC)

“Quartered has an amazing history and accomplishments. On tour constantly and having tracks on Rockband are only a couple of great things this band has done… Great refined sound of a modern hard rock band. Elements of prog rock mixed in with metal to create a blend tastes which just flow into ones ears. Catchy hooks and sick riffs rekindled my love for Quartered as they blew away the crowd. Using boxes crafted to house lights to shoot up at them as they played they looked and sounded amazing. I could see Quartered rock a small venue, a theatre or even an arena and you would still get such an intimate feeling with such a personable band. ” – Hammer Records (Live Review)

“The perfect blend of brutality, melody and catchy hooks made for the perfect metal storm. Self described as progressive, Quartered never let the energy fall below maximum during their entire set. Through the constant tempo changes, occasional time signature madness and swift vocal style change ups they were proving that hype means nothing when all you’ve got is talent and the ability of writing a great and memorable metal song. So many bands, even seasoned veterans, lack stage presence but Quartered could write a how-to book on the subject. Engaging and attention grabbing, these guys know how to put on a show. Its not very often you see a band live, hearing them for the first time, and there is not a single thing to complain about. There is just something so intriguing with their hybrid sound of “Alive or Just Breathing” era Killswitch Engage and the progressive flair of Tool. With the peaks and valleys woven into their sound it keeps all eyes on stage at all times and all ears forever open, and that is something the night had been missing.” – Metal Underground (Live Review)

“Somewhere along the inspiration of other Canadian screamos Alexisonfire, see for yourself by listening to their newest single “Casa”” – Vancouver Music Review.

“Screamo modern metal with a complexed progressive edge is what I call this style of music from Vancouver based hard hitters Quartered.” – Fireworks Magazine

‘Walks Like A Ghost’ is an album packed with the perfect mix of heaviness and melody, creating songs that contain elements of progressive metal, post-rock, metalcore, and in some short instances; alternative doom.” – Metal Underground

“They are not only one of the most talented bands I have had the honour of working with but are flexible, easy to deal with and I have never received anything other than the best reviews from venues that have hosted them with multiple requests to have them return again.”- Leanne Harrison, Sin Agency

“they’ve got a good sense of humor, and they sound top-notch” – Metal Sucks

“boozy blast of heathen prog” – Team Rock

“Le metal a du talent.”  – Metal France

“If you’d like a taste of the brew Protokult has on tap, check out the eclectic, hoppy folk thrasher “Get Me a Beer”. Indeed this mix of traditional folk, thrash metal, death metal, and other genres will have you stomping your feet and drinking too fast.`- Yell Magazine

“The rousing opening track “Get Me A Beer” is alcohol-fueled folk metal with similarities to bands like Korpiklaani, but they have many other facets… It’s an extremely diverse album” – Heavy Metal. About.com

“Ah this album was a pleasure to review. So many albums are a slog to get through, but I was sorry when No Beer In Heaven ended…All the band are excellent musicians and you can hear their joy at playing their music. Ekaterina Pvatlova brings another dimension to the band too; her vocals are nothing you’ve heard in metal before, and I love the touch she brings with the woodwind instruments…I love the track “Get Me A Beer” – it could be marketed as a cure for depression. Elsewhere, the contrast between folk and metal works very harmoniously: heavy and uplifting at the same time. Joyous stuff! The band also have a good sense of humour, and while they can be serious, this is an enjoyable life-affirming album to listen to, which is as it should be. Our lives are brief; we should try and enjoy our spell on this earth! I love the album artwork and presentation too. This is a band the world needs to hear more of. Highly recommended! – Hellbound

“a superb album. Protokult gives folk-metal a new nice dimension. Their progressive folk-metal approach is a very delicious one. Don’t let the ‘beer-titles’ fool you, the band goals are far beyond beer-humpaa. They’re far more serious, despite of the sometimes quite merry tunes. This is one of the best folk-metal albums I’ve heard this year” – Folk-Metal.nl

“Protokult is a colourful collective, made up of four guys and a lady…It is a versatile album…progressive twists and turns in the songs and surprising approaches.” – Lords of Metal

“The very second I started to listen to No Beer In Heaven and “Get Me A Beer” came on I was instantly hooked. Instantly Protokult kills it with a killer opening riff that is a combination of electric guitar and synthesizer. “Get Me A Beer” has one of the wildest mix of genres and styles that I have heard in quite some time.” – Kingston Music Reviews

“Let’s mark the list down, shall we: Awesome Folk music spanning different areas of sound and direction, check! Creative and art work based around an old fashioned beer hall, check! And last, but certainly not least, BEER themed music!!!!.” – Metal Temple

“Folk and metal comes together in a epic way with Protokult. The mix is perfect for the party and other festivity’s that needs a nice kick in the ass, like a metal heads funeral. Hooks, beer and the ever changing change ups makes this LP one for the books.” Tommy Tee – The Metal Factory on Insane Realm Radio.com

“Although PROTOKULT is a Canadian-based group, the members come from various backgrounds (Polish, Irish, Russian, Czech) and the result is a marvellous mix of Canadian and international forces. The goal is to unite these cultures into one sound, balancing tradition and folklore with heavy, thrash and black metal for head-bangers everywhere.” – Demented Magazine

“Most bands go on the road to promote the CD and encourage fans to buy it but this album would actually encourage me to go and see the band. The music speaks and says that this band will be well worth watching live.” – Extreme Metal Television

“Anyone who has seen this band live knows that the beer maidens will be pouring potent potables into ever thirsty mouths at the front of the stage. Before this delightful feature comes to fruition, the fans come in close, sing along, and dance the metal jig during the pagan musical onslaught from the band. We are instantly transported to villages, and forests of another era.” – Metal Master Kingdom (Live Review)

“All in all No Beer In Heaven is an extra large package of dark folk metal here to drink and party with you. If you’re a folk fan, be sure to give them a listen. The album is a solid piece and an enjoyment to even non-folk fans. Oh, and they also love the ‘Water of Life’ (that is vodka if you didn’t know already).” – Two Guys Metal Reviews

“They belong amongst the ranks of bands like Moonsorrow and Skyforger…Almost every song twists and turns through several folk metal transformations, without ever tapping into cheesy or overly tired clichés.”- Metal Observer (2010 review for Ancestral Anthems)

“Their songs pulse and writhe like a sinuous living thing.”- Exclaim (2012 review of Marzena)
