Internationally renowned photographer Peter Beste and graphic artist Christophe Szpajdel will be featured in the first installation of Vancouver’s “Black”, The Black Metal Exhibition being held from June 11 – 19 at the Evergreen Cannabis Society (2868 West 4th Avenue).

“Black” has been conceived by local photographer Kevin Eisenlord, who has joined forces with Abelardo Mayoral, concert promoter at The Invisible Orange to materialize this event.

“I actually came in contact with Christophe through friends in black metal band Idolatry whom I had done pictures for and Peter is an icon in the black metal community in general, so I messaged him as I was really interested in a critic of my photos because he is one the most respected authorities in black metal photography. From there I have developed a friendship with both as I look up to their work and thus the reason for showcasing two of the world’s great Black Metal artists in Vancouver, plus nothing like this has ever been held in the city before.” comments Eisenlord.

The exhibition will feature the photography of Peter Beste, a documentary photographer based in Portland, Oregon and well known in the Metal community for his photography book “True Norwegian Black Metal”. (pics of Beste’s work below)

Christophe Szpajdel, also known for his book “Lord of the Logos: Designing the Metal Underground”. After his first logo design prepared for the Finnish band Disgrace in 1990, Christophe Szpajdel has drawn more than 7000 metal band logos. (pics of Szpajdel’s work below)

In 2013, Kevin Eisenlord, the Vancouver based photographer focused his path on the concert world, quickly making a name among touring musicians, promoters, and publications. His work can be found in many online magazines and websites.

NOTE: Both Christophe Szpajdiel and Peter Beste will not be offering graphic logo design and photography workshops as previously announced.

WACKEN METAL BATTLE CANADA is proud to announce theQuebec Final on May 7th at Piranha Bar in Montreal, QC for this year’s 2016 national competition to send one independent metal talent to the world stage at Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany, which holds an attendance of over 80,000 metalheads from around the world. After five battle rounds in Montreal during the months of February, March, and April, the following bands listed below will be performing for one to move on to perform at the National Final in Toronto on June 11th for ‘One Band To Rule Them All’ and play at Wacken Open Air 2016.

This is WMBC’s fourth year hosting the competition across country in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. For the last three years that Wacken Metal Battle has been held in Canada, it has produced two world champions Vesperia (2015) and Crimson Shadows (2013) to triumph at the international Wacken Metal Battle beating out over 30 other representing countries from around the globe.

Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition where over a hundred band’s from across the country battle each other for one to be selected and join over 30 other countries for an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air, which has been taking place in Wacken , Germany for the last 26 years. Oshawa’s Vesperia (2014 winners – video at Wacken), Toronto’s Crimson Shadows (2013 winners – video at Wacken) and Montreal’s Mutank (2014 winners – video at Wacken) have had that honour playing in front of thousands. The 2016 festival will be taking place from August 4-6.

How it works:

Each city will hold their qualifying rounds plus city finals from the months of January to May 2016 selecting the top band to move forward to the national finals in Toronto, ON on June 11th at Opera House with one being selected to perform at the 27th edition of Wacken Open Air taking place from August 4-6. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry.

About:

SAINTS OF DEATH is a four piece that originally began as a Motorhead tribute band that has now taken the reins to write original material with a double bassist attack and set themselves apart from the pack with their unique heavy sound of thrash, doom and hardcore metal.

Taking their experiences from past bands (Snaggletooth, Scissortooth, Dead End Ascension, Skookum, My Own Chaos, Luciferian Conquest, Torrential Pain, Tides of Honor and Annora), these veterans of the Vancouver scene ready to debut their self-titled EP this September 25, 2015 to introduce metal fans to a new sound coming from the Canadian West coast.

Fronted by vocalist and eight string bassist Twan Holliday, a giant standing nearly 7’ foot tall who can also be recognized for his acting credits in some well-known Hollywood movies and pro wrestling (credits below) is joined by four string bassist Darren Morris, guitarist Phil Henri and Christopher James on drums to complete a ferocious line up.

Aiming to set the bar high with a live behemoth of ampage, backed by a custom light show, SAINTS of DEATH are pushing forward to take on the biggest stages and crowds and win over fans who enjoy headbanging to such bands as Black Sabbath, Lamb of God, Overkill, Motorhead, and Pantera.

Track by track of Saints of Death EP explained by the band:

1. Army of the Dead: This song is written from the perspective of a Viking in battle. Its underlying message is about the battle of life. “Everyone’s born, everyone dies”, we fight hard and strong, live, laugh, love and when it’s our time to die, we die!

2. Doom 5.1: This song is about organized religion and greed.

3. Blood Vendetta: This song is written about blood vendettas around the world. It’s about people being born into war, and fighting wars started by generations before them in order of gaining redemption for their lost family.

4. Revolution: This song is about unity and standing up for what is right! It’s a call to people everywhere to join together and fight for their rights and what’s right through Revolution.

5. Angels and Demons: This song is written about an old man on his deathbed. Not happy with his life he struggles though a battle between the right and wrong he has done and who will take possession of his soul; angels or demons.

Fun Fact: Besides being a musician vocalist / bassist Twan Holliday has acting credits for movies American Mary (2012), The Devils Ground (2009) w/ Darryl Hanna, Stan Helsing (2009) (Leslie Neielson’s last movie), Catwoman (2004) w/ Halle Barry, Psych (TV Show) plus has done stunts on Super Natural (TV Show) and Pathfinder (2007). Twan was also a pro hard-core wrestler of 10 years and was on TV every Saturday at 1pm on KVOS TV12 (Bellingham, WA) plus was asked to train for WWE.

Toronto, ON heavy metal trio BLACK ABSINTHE are surfacing from the basement to unleash new tunes from their debut album ‘Early Signs of Denial’ produced by Dave Baksh (Cross Dog, The Mahones) plus mixed and mastered by Frank Gryner (Rob Zombie- Hillbilly Deluxe). Set for release on May 13th, 2016, the album is the band’s first professional recording to follow their three self recorded EPs Live At Coalition (2014), Noise Complaint (2014) and Augusta (2012).

BLACK ABSINTHE’s powerful heavy riffs and bass lines are reminiscent of classic thrash and new wave British heavy metal with a range of progressive to classic rock influence ready to be shared with fans new and old alike. The band recently teamed up with MetalMasterKingdom.com to premiere their third single ‘NOW’.

Bassist Kyle Scarlett comments on “NOW”:

“‘NOW is one of our favorites to play of the new songs. We wanted to build a song around a solid open chug you hear in a lot of NWOBHM. The chorus veers off from the old school metal vibe and comes back full force with some screams. The solo section was a lot of fun to work on in the studio, did a lot of layers and got it sounding mean. All in all a solid rager that gives ya little sections to breathe! To add, the lyrics are about the philosophy of time, thinking of what you want, but at the cost of what you have to do to get it.”

Formed in 2011 by vocalist and guitarist Jack Cerre, bassist Kyle Scarlett and drummer Austin Henderson, the trio continue to rip through the underground Toronto metal scene without pause.

Compounding heavy riffs and bass lines reminiscent of classic thrash and new wave British heavy metal with a range of progressive to classic rock influence, Black Absinthe presents a solid example of a Canadian metal band. They’re road hungry, influenced plus supported by other driven Canadian musicians and most of all, ready to innovate and grow the traditions of a genre they venerate and respect. As leaders in the scene, Black Absinthe were headlining Toronto semi-finalists in the Wacken Metal Battle Canada 2015.

With a new year ahead, Black Absinthe pushes on with their desire to provide their fans in Canada and online with a cleaner and heavier presentation of their sound. The years incubating in Toronto’s metal underground have served the band well. From their 2012 debut EP Augusta to their 2014 EP Noise Complaint, both releases have established the band’s sound as well as their stage presence, leading to their driven heavy metal machine. Now in 2016, Black Absinthe are ready to release their debut studio album Early Signs Of Denial (May 13, 2016). The album was produced by Dave Baksh (Cross Dog, The Mahones) out of the Gentleman’s Den studio in Pickering, ON who’s experience proved to be the final touch; aiding in refining drum dynamics, smoothing the transitions and layering harmonic guitar lines. Black Absinthe’s Early Signs Of Denial sound is a leading example of the contemporary Canadian metal scene serving to showcase how the band sounds in a crisp, powerful, and ultimately more professional recording environment.

The title “Early Signs of Denial” is a conceptual connection to the themes of fear, corruption, and overcoming disparity, which is explored in the songs. The record has emphasis of crushing modern tone, polished instrumental sections, soaring vocals and a blending of contemporary and classic metal. With each track, this unique record represents different aspects of Black Absinthe’s diversity in song writing. The band does not tread lightly over their new wave of British heavy metal song style or their technical and progressive metal influences.

Through the bands expanding network cultivated through Coalition Music’s “Artist Entrepreneur Program”, they chose Frank Gryner (Rob Zombie- Hillbilly Deluxe) to mix and master the album in the Winter of 2015. His strong ability to work with a diversity of sounds was the appeal to the band. His mixing took the album into the sonic spheres of a classic 80’s sound providing, grandeur, psychedelia, and an arena rock feel that could properly represent the textures put down in tracking. There was an immediate trust formed with the stylistic choices Gryner made throughout mixing.

Ottawa, ON symphonic black / death metal band ENDEMISE has posted a new music video for the title track from their upcoming album ‘Anathema’ due out later this year to follow their 2013 debut album ‘Far From The Light’ released on Maple Metal Records and 2012 self-titled EP. The album was produced byENDEMISE guitarist Dale Sauve along with Ken Sorceron (Abigail Williams) and features eight blistering tracks to burst your ear drums (album artwork and track listing revealed below). The national final in Toronto, ON will be host to Prairie Final winner Tales of The Tomb (Edmonton, AB) plus Ontario Final winners Profaner (Hamilton, ON) and Pyramid Theorem (Toronto, ON) with BC and Quebec finalists still to be announced. The winner of this year’s national competition will perform at Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany, which holds an attendance of over 80,000 metalheads from around the world for ‘One Band To Rule Them All’.
This is WMBC’s fourth year hosting the competition across country in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. For the last three years that Wacken Metal Battle has been held in Canada, it has produced two world champions Vesperia (2015) and Crimson Shadows (2013) to triumph at the international Wacken Metal Battle beating out over 30 other representing countries from around the globe.

No sunlight, no fresh air and knowing that no matter what you did you could never be free again. That feeling of captivity and acceptance, that everyday you would die over and over again. But if you listen close to the lyrics, you will realize that the only thing holding this person in that cage…..is themselves.”

Canadian band CELESTIAL RUIN is styled after European Symphonic Rock/Metal but executed with a decidedly North American flavor. Combining a heavenly destruction of heavy riffs with beautiful melodies, CELESTIAL RUIN create catchy, singable melodies, and rich symphonic textures. The compositions are “epic” by all accounts. Lyrical themes are mainly drawn from fantasy and horror, sometimes implying deeper meanings, sometimes just celebrating the subject matter.
Based out of Vancouver, BC, CELESTIAL RUIN started taking the scene by storm with their debut album “The Awakening”. “The music on ‘Pandora’ is about unleashing chaos, beauty and all emotions into the world. It celebrates both the joy and the pain that emotions can create. The lyrics on this release come from a mix of personal experiences and fantasy elements. Most of the were written during a time when Larissa was going through recovery from a surgery and was unable to speak, sing and barely able to stand up. The single ‘Invincible’ tells the story of organ donation compassionately from both sides of the giver and receiver, which is a cause the band fully supports after a fan’s mother in UK had a successful heart transplant after be on the waiting list for a long amount time plus the Welsh government in Wales deciding to pass regulation for the opt out decision got the guys highlighting to the rest of world the importance to sign up for organ donation.

“Every organ donor can save 8 lives, that is 8 families who are given hope, 8 families who don’t have to grieve, 8 families whose lives are changed.” says Sarah Todd Callender-Ferrier, the UK fan fan whom inspired THE UNDIVIDED.

THE UNDIVIDED will be releasing their EP ‘Satellites’ on May 5th to coincide with their performance during CMW and features three songs with two live bonus tracks that were produced and written with Dan Weller of SIKT.

Driven by a desire to create the kind of noise people simply have to stand up and hear the most exciting- not to mention anthemic- rock act to emerge from South Wales in decades has arrived and not a moment too soon.

Inspired by the political, message-heavy words of fellow countrymen Manic Street Preachers, the instrumentation of Idlewild, and the penchant for melodic pop sensibilities evident in the likes of Mansun and Peace, The Undivided make music that’s impossible to ignore. Soaring guitar chords launch from atop punishing riffs, shuddering bass lines carry the rhythms forward, and sledgehammer drumbeats underpin this combination of harmony and electricity.

Hailing from the South Wales Valleys, the four piece (comprising lead guitarist and singer Joe Disson, percussive maestro Rhyd Mason and guitarist Lew Bray and joining in 2014 Bass guitarist Craig Prosser) formed circa 2010, born from the ashes of previous aural endeavours and built on the back of long-standing friendships. A successful meeting of minds, a period of incessant and relentless gigging followed, which saw them perform dates across the UK- including support slots for Ash, The Xcerts, Kids in Glass Houses, The Dirty Youth, IDivide and Samoans – with praise coming from Kerrang!, Rock Sound, NME and XFM, to name but a few.

Before long the trio found themselves hauled up at a cottage in rural west Wales, rehearsing and writing a good chunk of the new LP safe in the knowledge there was no phone line, no mobile signal, no broadband, and nobody to complain about their 1AM jam sessions. Evidently something went right, with the Romesh Dodangoda-produced album (Kids in Glass Houses, Funeral For A Friend), This New Day, proof of that. Garnering support from the Welsh Arts Council (which gave funding for the production), BBC Radio1 Introducing, Nation Radio, Team Rock Radio and Big Cheese, the hype is almost as big as the main-room filling tunes on the record. Thankfully though, in this case it’s deserving, with The Undivided set to fulfil their ambition of breaking with the norm to deliver truly poignant, meaningful and moving songs through expert musicianship and devastatingly honest lyricism. The band secured a sync placement for the instrumental version of ‘Headlights’ from the previous album ‘This New Day’ on the opening and closing credits of BBC 4 Royal Institute Christmas lectures, screen on 29th, 30th and 31st December 2014.

The band showcased at the 2015 Canadian Music Week in Toronto, ON and received US and Canadian College radio airplay, which has already awarded them a CMJ radio distinction. They have recently written and produced their new EP ‘Satellites’ with Dan Weller (Sikth), which is set for release on May 5th, 2016 and to be debut at their second appearance at this year’s Canadian Music Week. BRUTAL BATTLE CUBA is proud to announce Montreal’s DEALER as the 2016 winner for this year’s competition to perform on the Brutal Fest tour across Cuba from Aug 18-28. The national final took place on April 23rd in Montreal between city round winners …From The Deep (Ottawa), Exes For Eyes (Oshawa), 3 Days Dead (Oshawa) plus Dealer (Montreal) and was judged by Bart Frydrychowicz (Quo Vadis), Aaron Homma (Annihilator, Killitorous) and Alex Dupras (Plasma Rifle, Unhuman, Teramobile).

“What a first year we had! I cannot believe it is already over! DEALER, from Montreal, won this edition and will be representing Canada at the Brutal Summer Fest 2016 in Cuba! I can definitely say that all the bands were amazing, but DEALER came to this contest to win and there is no doubt about it. Huge presence on stage, trashy and aggressive “in your face” crossover between trash and hardcore. The Cubans are going to have a blast seeing these guys live! We are wrapping up this first year and already, we are working on the next one! Stay tuned, some announcements will come pretty soon!” comments BBC organizer Richard O’Neil.

DEALER will be introduced to every aspect of Cuban culture during their seven date tour over two weeks across the country with five to seven other international bands that includes crew members, drivers and one big bus on the road. As winning band, they will also be given the opportunity to be endorsed by companies such as InTune Guitar Picks and SoulTone Cymbals as well as a few other great prizes from BBC sponsors.
