Recognizing the achievements of Calgary’s music community, the YYC Music Awards is proud to announce their inaugural year in supporting and celebrating the wide range of musical talent based in the city. Honouring artists in 19 categories (list below), the YYC Music Awards is taking submissions until April 16th for this year’s first annual gala being held on September 25th at a venue later to be announced.

The YYC Music Awards are founded by music industry veterans Darren Gilbert (producer, Off The T-Can Studio), Shannon Ambrose (The Portal Magazine), Larry Mayell (artist manager) & Leanne Harrison (SIN Agency) to celebrate the artists that embrace Calgary at home, entertaining and supporting its arts and culture.

About:

Brandish your weapons and bare your teeth in the battle for new world order with Montreal’s power metal quintet, Demise Of The Crown. They run the gambit from melodic power metal to hard rock weaved together with soaring solos reminiscent of Eddie Van Halen with undertones of Yngwie Malmsteen. The band’s sound has developed from progressive to a heavy metal band that has a pop format structure to the music in order to lure people into the realm of metal. Through many years of playing music with different people in the Montreal scene and slowly forming the official line up in 2014. Each member have spent their time paying dues in the local community and have banded together with the same goal and vision for a band determined to shake the foundation of power metal.

Guitarist, Manuel Iradian writes all the music, then handed off to Kevin “Kevy Metal” (drummer) to dress up each song with his high-speed, galloping rhythms, finally, Darren Beadman crafts the anthemic lyrics rousing crowds to chant along with an anarchistic frenzy. Each song is rooted in all basic human emotions; anger, lust, depression, happiness, death and revenge.

Influenced by headliners like Nevermore, Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth, Pantera, and Faith No More, the band is working their way up the royal blood line to cause chaos right alongside their heroes. They have performed with iconic bands like Hellyeah, Devin Townsend Project, 3 Inches Of Blood, Katatonia and Firewind. Edmonton, AB’s VAN HALST is a fierce, empowering force of hard rock fused with metal. A project, which began as a solo artist for whom the band is named after — Kami Van Halst, has since become a full group producing socially conscious, lyrical tracks that focus on disenfranchised and marginalized populations. The band’s influences stay true to goth rock, Kami Van Halst demonstrates an agile vocal delivery in combination with pummeling growls. Lyrically, the band draws from black metal due to its focus on people suffering from isolation and rising to overcome the preconceptions of a judgemental society. In This Moment’s industrial fusion remains a primary influence for Van Halst, employing a sampler, synthesizer, and distorted vocals.

Kami Van Halst dominates as the vocalist performing both growls and soaring vocals (Surviving Suzanne), Scott Greene (Derina Harvey Band/Dirty Pool) and Strathon J. Bajowsky (Havok Way) craft the guitar work while Brendan McMillan (bass) (My Darkest Days) and Brett Seaton (drums) (Cultured by Fire) drive the rhythm section of the band. Kami’s range and virtuosic vocal ability always captivates an audience and her attitude on stage truly delivers the meaning behind the songs. BUFFALO THEORY MTL is a band of beer chugging, heavy riffing fans for the fans. Attributing their name to a scene from the pop culture 80’s TV show CHEERS (Cliff Claven explains the Buffalo theory of beer to his buddy Norm (explanation here.)) and the MTL abbreviation representing their pride for their hometown of Montreal, QC. These seasoned veterans from the Canadian and Brazilian metal scenes are always ready to set the stage ablaze with their stoner / thrash infused metal for beer lovers around the world.

Comprised of members from legendary Quebec bands Ghoulunatics, Les Ékorchés, Arseniq 33 and currently active Vantablack Warship, BUFFALO THEORY MTL unleash their fourth and latest offering ‘Skeptic Knight’ viaStand Productions as of February 26th. The EP is the follow up to 2014’s ‘Murder Trilogy’ EP and their 2012 full length ‘Heavy Ride’ and was recorded at Indica Studio in Montreal, QC where it was produced by BUFFALO THEORY MTL along with Peter Edwards (Grimskunk). Featuring five annihilating tracks each with its own eclectic flavour / twist will appeal highly to fans of Down, COC, Queens of the Stone Age and Black Sabbath.

“We think ‘Skeptic Knight’ is our best material to date and it’s damn heavy as usual. It has a different sounding production that we like a lot. We completed 5 songs for the release. There were lots of riffs just waiting to be completed and it was hard to choose which ones to release first as we are already prepared to unleash another EP by next year to follow it.” comments bassist Gary Lyons.

Vocalist Anton Parr adds “Four of the new songs on ‘Skeptic Knight’ speak about the coexistence of parallel worlds – material and spiritual – and how different individuals go through the trials of life. The exception is Conspiracy in Paranoland, which is a clear reference to how quick some of our idols vanished at a very young age. Victims of the extreme excesses of the rockstar way of life, fueled by ruthless manipulators.”

This spring, Canadian neo-rock nerds Double Experience are coming back with their third album entitled “Unsaved Progress” set for release on April 8th via their label Colfax Music. The Ottawa-based trio are taking the next step from their previous album – initially released exclusively on collectible trading cards – by utilizing classic video-game inspired artwork and packaging.

Conquerors of epic metal, VESPERIA will be supporting Finnish metal mastersKALMAH‘s 2016 cross Canada tour from April 4th – 24th (dates listed below). The Oshawa based band has been rising up the ranks after winning the Canadian and International 2015 edition of Wacken Metal Battle crowning them the best in the world against other competing independent bands from over 30 other countries. Over the last 10 years, the international battle has been hosted by the world’s largest outdoor metal festival Wacken Open Air that takes place every summer in Wacken, Germany with the planet’s highest caliber of metal bands.

Prior to their tour, VESPERIA will be entering Blue Sound & Music Studios in Toronto, Canada this March to record their follow up to 2015’s ‘The Iron Tempests’ EP. Helming the project will be engineer/ producer Russ Mackay (Mastodon, Iron Maiden, Styx). The new album will feature an array of famous Canadian guest musicians and the art will be created by Juno award-winning artist Hugh Syme (Rush, Nevermore, Dream Theatre).

About:

The cloudy beginnings of VESPERIA lay etched in the gorged bodies of former musical projects among the now four-member band. Twisting, writhing and forcing their aural onslaught upon metal audiences across the globe have sincerely ensured the band’s continuity through all the harsh and arduous battles modern metal bands are bound to encounter in their tenures.

Established in 2012 by vocalist/ bassist Morgan Rider, the sound, direction and theme of the music quickly and naturally evolved into the style of fierce and heroic metal the band is now known and praised for.

Shortly after releasing their first full-length album Voyage from Vinland, VESPERIA redefined themselves and further focused their direction with the 2012 demo, The Swordsman. In 2013, the band independently funded and released their 2nd full-length album An Olden Tale, drawing the ears and attention of metal fans around the world and demonstrating their true mastery of their craft. During that same year, the band also independently funded and completed several Canadian tours to support the album.

Early 2015 saw the band enter the studio once again to record some demo material, which would become The Iron Tempests EP. During this time, the band toured Canada from coast to coast and also made an appearance at Wacken Open Air in Germany, where they won the title of 2015 International Wacken Battle Champions, a second time win for the band’s frontman, Morgan.

With their most fierce music written to date and a bounty of opportunity awaiting, VESPERIA continue to hungrily eye 2015 as the year they will make their mark upon the Earth.

Montreal black metallers Éohum have teamed up with Decibel Mag for the premiere of their second single ‘Eurocide’ off their upcoming EP ‘Ealdfaeder’ set for release on March 18th.

Band founder and guitarist Jeremy Perkins comments:

“Eurocide is the opener to our EP, a direct introduction with sounds of flutes and drum, influenced by the Celtic and Gaulic sound. Notes you would of heard in ancient Druidic ceremonies and festivals.

It is a song I keep close to my heart and I believe it can be seen as our manifesto, speaking of the loss of tradition, culture and identity, these being side effects of any form of colonization and indoctrination of any peoples on Earth throughout the globe at any time in history. I think every culture can come together and relate globally.

Musically, it is what I can call a literal progressive structure where we play 9 distinct riffs in a row without returning to a break, before returning to our final riffs and outro as we commenced with and it works great!

Brings us to a place where human societies and nature lived symbiotically and in balance!”

The EP was recorded at Chris Donaldson’s (Cryptopsy) “The Grid” with a special guest recording from drummer Simon Mackay of The Agonist on tracks 2-4-5 and features a line up with band founder Perkins on guitar along with the return of Annie Perreault on French horn/flute, guitarist Sylvain Dumont, vocalist Barrie Butler plus new comers bassist Cesar Franco and drummer Luca Belviso whom have been part of the line up for the last year. All are focused on the distinct grassroots of old school plus very heavy progression that has flourished since last year to give way to a distinct path, sound and image with each member sharing common ground on the message, beliefs and ideas behind Éohum.

About:

Formed in 2010, Éohum (pronounced ee-o-um) is a traditionalist and cultural identitarian band produced from the mind of guitarist Jeremy Perkins to create a relentless, anthemic groove -doom- tinged black metal to emphasize a message clearly depicting people’s lack of interest in the past relationship we held with nature and our ancestral ways.

Originally written as a literal, poetic project by Perkins, his surrounding friends at the time having musical roots and a background in metal, then sprouted the idea for him to create Éohum.

“A book became a music release! Now with a full lineup we have a sound, that is distinct, that is ours.” says Perkins

All written and arranged by Perkins, Éohum debut their release “Revelations, Aurora Of An Epoch” in April 2015 that featured a collective of musicians that included guest vocals from Matt McGachy (Cryptopsy) (Tracks 3-4-5-7), Lana Edwards (Intro & Outro), Phillippe Rieder (Track 6), Nick Wybo (ex-Vinyl Hero) on drums, Annie Perreault on French Horn/Trumpet, Sylvain Dumont on guitar, James Heymans on bass and Perkins himself on guitar plus a live line up that featured drummer Simon Mackay (The Agonist) and vocalist Barrie Butler (ex : Tard).

With so much talent from various backgrounds, Éohum blended the most gruesome with the cleanest of black and doom metal to create hypnotic riffs with seducing horns that was injected into the veins of metal fans.

Now in 2016 with their new EP ‘Ealdfaeder’ set for release on March 18th, Éohum features a line up with Perkins (guitar) and the return of Perreault (French Horn/Flute), Dumont (Guitar), Butler (Vocals) plus new comers Cesar Franco (bass) and Luca Belviso (drums) whom have made up the band up for a year now plus a special guest recording from drummer Simon Mackay (The Agonist) on tracks 2-4-5 for the release. All are focused on the distinct grassroots of old school, very heavy progression that has flourished since last year to give way to a distinct path, sound and image with each member sharing common ground on the message, beliefs and ideas behind Éohum.

“The EP speaks generally about the lost voice of past cultures who were colonized and the decaying relationship humanity has with nature due to the societies we live in. The loss of traditions we held and relationships we had with nature.” comments Perkins.

Lyrically the EP is inspired by poems written by Perkins on the loss of culture and tradition due to greed and colonization across the globe.

1- Eurocide :This song speaks of the lost traditions within the distinct smaller cultures of Europe’s in the past colonization periods thousands of years ago, where they lost their relation to nature, faiths and ways of life.

2- Unmasking a world of deceit : Reveals the trading in of our beliefs; ways, quality of food and lifestyles for a fist of coins, routine and fear filled faiths of today’s world.

3- The Apathetic Plague : A song descrying the effects of colonization and capitalism on countries across the globe and the loss of land and ancient people’s perspectives, like for example the Amazon.

4- Ode To A Martyr: A look at today’s deprived, pill driven, technological populace.Humanity leaving behind its core and self-preservation for these delusional lifestyles.

5-Curative Undulations: Speaks of humanities relation to nature and musical traditions and the primordial ways we used healing with music. Curative undulations which means, healing, music/sound waves.

Éohum is recommended for fans of black, doom and death metal in the vein of bands such as God Seed, Death, Hate Forest, Immortal, Neurosis.

Fun Fact About Band Name: Éohum means many Yew trees in old English, Yew tree is the Tree of Life for the English tribes of our past predating most of the Celt languages which blended Latin to their own afterward.

The E without the accent would mean many war horses, so that’s why there is an accent, not because it’s a French word.

BRUTAL BATTLE CUBA is proud to reveal its battle line up for this year’s 2016 edition where one Canadian band will perform on this year’s BRUTAL SUMMER FEST TOUR across CUBA from from Aug 18-28. The winning band will perform on a seven date tour with five to seven international bands that includes crew members, drivers and one big bus on the road for two weeks across the country plus while on the road, the Canadian band will be introduced to every aspect of Cuban culture.
