FRACTAL CYPHER exists to captivate audiences with progressive instrumentals that cut through the mesmerizing vocals yet somehow evolving; each listen provides a new perspective. Straight out of the heart of Canada’s metal scene, these Montreal metallers constantly shift their compositions with seamless transitions and theatrical interludes to keep audiences on their toes. Since 2014, ex-Far From Reality members Simon Lavoie (vocals), Ludovick Daoust (keyboard), and Vincent Bruneau (guitar) have dedicated themselves to FRACTAL CYPHER.

The powerful quintet is just as versatile in their music as they are in their musical interests, darting between djent, death metal, and classic rock. Each song acts of their own volition almost taking control of the members and shaping a personality and energy not unlike a living entity. Ludovick is at the helm of songwriting, calculating and unlocking each melody and becoming the voice for each piece. Their forthcoming EP ‘Mouichido’ is a rebirth for the band as it’s a re-release of re-recorded material from their 2014 EP ‘Reborn’. ‘Mouichido’, the Japanese word for “Repeat” or “to do one more time” is perfectly titled for the EP to signify its re-release of previously recorded versions that now feature new vocalist Alex Friis and bass tracks recorded by Tristan Martin plus live performance being done by Ryan Loewen along with a guest appearance by vocalist Mark Hunter of Chimairaon track ‘In Waves’.

Vancouver-based Without Mercy certainly stays true to its name. Ruthless and menacing, these Canadian metal titans have cultivated and redefined the phrase, “Fuck Pussy Metal”.

Founded in 2004, Without Mercy has gone from strength to strength over the years. They released their first EP “All Else Fails” in 2007 completely independently and used its humble beginnings to start the catapulting of performances, internet presence and radio play. In 2009, Without Mercy went on to record their self-titled full length album using the same team that worked on records by Devin Townsend, Mudvayne, and Marilyn Manson. Without Mercy rode the attention wave of their self-titled debut, using the escalation to begin a relentless performance schedule that would lead them far from their hometown and include over 200 live performances. No stranger to tenacity, in only a few short years Without Mercy have achieved; being the only indie metal band in Western Canada to have two tracks available on Rock Band 3, being featured in Tattoo Savage Magazine, and pioneering the phrases, ‘You Smell Like A Bitch’ and ‘Fuck Pussy Metal’ – which have now become synonymous with the band.

In 2014, Without Mercy unleashed third studio release, “Reborn”. Another massive evolution for the band, Without Mercy sought to bring back the organic metal sound and combine it with a high production standard. Fast forward to 2016, some line up changes with a new vocalist and bassist, the band is ready to share with fans re-recorded material from ‘Reborn’ on their new EP ‘Mouichido’ that even features Chimaira vocalist Mark Hunter on their track ‘In Waves’. Calgary Metalfest Announce Headliners ANNIHILATOR, EXCITER (original line-up), RAZOR, SACRIFICE

Big Nate Productions and Hubb Music Proudly Present Calgary Metalfest V! A Historic Night of Canadian Metal!

On September 17th, 2016 at Flames Central, international touring act ANNIHILATOR will perform a blistering 75 minute set, their first show in Western Canada since 1993. Also appearing, will be the recently reformed and original lineup of speed/thrash metal pioneers EXCITER, their first Western Canadian performance since 1985. The show will be opened by thrash veterans RAZOR and SACRIFICE. These bands are all hot off the heels of multiple critically acclaimed festival performances in the US, Europe, and South America. Calgary’s GATEKRASHÖR will provide last call entertainment.

Club shows will be held at The Ship and Anchor Pub, Distortion – Live Music Venue, and Dickens Pub, September 14th through 16th. All shows 18+. Full lineups and more to be announced!

Canadian progressive power metal band SCYTHIA has teamed up with Beatroute for the premiere of their second single ‘Laugh of The Tsar’, one of eight new tracks from their fourth independent full-length album, ‘Lineage’, set to release on May 4, 2016.

‘Lineage’ is the follow up to 2014’s ‘…Of Conquest’, which saw the quartet’s lead single and music video ‘Bear Claw Tavern’, first featured via GuitarWorld.com instantly hit the web like wildfire. The video – described as a truly uproarious three-minute scorcher featuring SCYTHIA rocking out in a medieval tavern filled with hooligans and mysterious characters – garnered over 50,000 views in less than a few days, inciting io9 to dub it “20 times better than The Hobbit”.

‘Lineage’ is self produced by SCYTHIA and features engineering from Nino Laurenne (Firewind, Finntroll, Wintersun, Ensiferum) and Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Powerwolf) plus mastering from Svante Forsback (Rammstein, Volbeat, Firewind, Apocalyptica). Nino Laurenne is also responsible for mixing duties on the album. ‘Lineage’ was recorded at LSD Studios in Lubeck, Germany and Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland.

About:

Like a charging bear Scythia have been playing progressive power metal with a twist of folklore since 2008. Scythia has coined their own sound while drawing influences from different genres such as celtic/gypsy folk music, power metal, death metal and progressive rock. Scythia’s albums and performances feature rich, poetic storytelling and grand tales that vividly captures the imagination of their listeners. Because of this, they have taken the independent scene by storm as they gather more and more fans both domestically and internationally. Scythia acquired its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with ancient Slavic imagery and melodies inspired from Balkan music. The name is fitting for a grandiose sound as Scythia is also an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia.

Scythia delivered their first album “Of War” in 2010 where the band’s distinctive sound was forged, which carried on to their next release “Of Exile” in 2011. These albums featured sound effects, narration and classical instrumentation to help drive home their story through the medium of concept albums. Touring and press associated with these albums garnered recognition for the band as they were nominated for the Best Metal Group/Duo for Canada’s Sirius XM Indies – Independent Music Awards. Other nominees include Bison B.C, Derelict, Devin Townsend Project and Mares Of Thrace. This is a great honor for the band to be included as nominees for these awards since they represents the Canadian independent music scene.

In February 2014, Scythia had its sights set on new and larger horizons. They released their 3rd full length album “Of Conquest”, which was engineered/produced by Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Halcyon Way, Svarsot) at LSD Studios in Lubeck, Germany. Co-produced by Shaun Thingvold (Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God, Fear Factory), Mixed by Nino Laurenne (Ensiferum, Wintersun, Kiuas, Firewind) at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland, and Mastered by Svante Forsback (Rammstein, Firewind, Korpiklaani,Apocalyptica) at Chartmakers in Helsinki, Finland. “Of Conquest” let to an overwhlemingly popular response and saw the band co-headline a major festival in Brazil and other festivals in the southeast USA in 2015.

“Of Conquest” sonically paved the way for their 4th full-length release “Lineage”, which was recorded using the same production team. 2016 sees Scythia getting ready for more touring in Canada and the US, and setting sail across the seas to international venues.

Vinyl Hero seamlessly blend funk, jazz, and country to produce catchy alternative rock revolving around heartfelt lyrics and vintage tones. The band refused to produce cut and paste rock n’ roll and rely on the talents of Ray Howard to lead the charge as their lead vocalist and guitarist. Costa Siarlis is another founding member who drives the undeniably jazzy bass lines and subtle backing vocals. 2016 marks the tenth anniversary for the Montreal locals, in 2013 they released ‘The 13’, which was around the same time that they gained two new members, Rami Barbir on guitars and the Belgian giant Tibz on drums.

The entire band works as a tireless, well-oiled machine collaborating to write blues inspired tunes with rock sensibility. Musically, they want to pay homage to their influences, which includes Queens Of the Stone Age, Stone Temple Pilots, and even fellow Canadians Big Wreck.

Composition of each tune revolves around environmental factors that impact band members and inspires them to capture that thought as if imprinting it onto a record. Vinyl Hero almost always place the music before the lyrics and maintain that the instrumentals are the key to connecting with fans and the first lasting impression from the band’s music. They are releasing a brand new EP ‘Seven Days On A Train’ on May 6, 2016.

What started in the summer of 2012 has managed to grow into a blend of chaotic and dissonant hardcore. Hopeless Youth takes influence of everything from thrash metal, crust punk to even black metal and doom. They manage to keep it rough and in your face, while having you sing along at the same time. The four piece from Montreal, QC manages to make every show as loud, unpredictable, and entertaining as a train wreck. Not to say they fall apart on stage, but rather put themselves in a position to achieve a certain catharsis through violently pouring themselves into every performance. After releasing their debut record ‘Disgust’ in 2014 on Candlelight Records, they’ve returned in 2016 with a new E.P. ‘Devil, Walk With Me’, which has been released on their own label Rainville Records, as well as digitally via Pluto Records. Attacking with an onslaught of crushing hyper-speed with straight-ahead black metal brutality sure to impress and amaze die-hard fans of the best of the classic Norwegian scene. Swiss one man black metal band, ENOID is streaming their third single ‘Ces Cicatrices Dans Mon Ame‘, which is one of eight tracks from the upcoming album ‘Exilé Aux Confins Des Tourments’ set for co-release viaSatanath Records (Russia) and Black Plague Records (USA) on May 5, 2016. The album is ENOID‘s seventh release marking the 20th anniversary since establishing in 1996. All instruments and the mix of the album were done by Bornyhake (Borgne, Kawir, Manii, Triumfall, Pure…) along with cover art done by Maxime Taccardi.

“Wormz”, is Death Lullaby’s newest entity which was recorded, mixed & mastered by Chris Donaldson in Montreal’s renowned metal studio: The Grid. Internationally renowned photographer Peter Beste and graphic artist Christophe Szpajdel will be featured in the first installation of Vancouver’s “Black”, The Black Metal Exhibition being held from June 11 – 19 at the Evergreen Cannabis Society (2868 West 4th Avenue).

“Black” has been conceived by local photographer Kevin Eisenlord, who has joined forces with Abelardo Mayoral, concert promoter at The Invisible Orange to materialize this event.

“I actually came in contact with Christophe through friends in black metal band Idolatry whom I had done pictures for and Peter is an icon in the black metal community in general, so I messaged him as I was really interested in a critic of my photos because he is one the most respected authorities in black metal photography. From there I have developed a friendship with both as I look up to their work and thus the reason for showcasing two of the world’s great Black Metal artists in Vancouver, plus nothing like this has ever been held in the city before.” comments Eisenlord.

The exhibition will feature the photography of Peter Beste, a documentary photographer based in Portland, Oregon and well known in the Metal community for his photography book “True Norwegian Black Metal”. (pics of Beste’s work below)

Christophe Szpajdel, also known for his book “Lord of the Logos: Designing the Metal Underground”. After his first logo design prepared for the Finnish band Disgrace in 1990, Christophe Szpajdel has drawn more than 7000 metal band logos. (pics of Szpajdel’s work below)

In 2013, Kevin Eisenlord, the Vancouver based photographer focused his path on the concert world, quickly making a name among touring musicians, promoters, and publications. His work can be found in many online magazines and websites.

NOTE: Both Christophe Szpajdiel and Peter Beste will not be offering graphic logo design and photography workshops as previously announced.
