Taking influence from Europe’s music festival circuit, Armstrong Metal Fest is a heavy metal celebration that encourages metal heads from across Canada and the globe to mosh and camp with the backdrop of great outdoors of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. What started as a backyard party in 2009 with nothing but eleven local metal bands such as Terrifier, Xul and Odinfist to name a few, has grown into a a huge success admired by the Western Canadian Metal scene. 2016 will be the eighth year of the festival and is planned to be the largest year for music and attendance yet. Canadian epic metal quartet and 2015 Wacken Metal Battle champions VESPERIA are proud to announce they will be back on the road for dates across Canada with death metal masters NECRONOMICON and Floridian tech-death metallers ABIOTIC for the ‘Okkultis In Canada Tour’ presented by PureGrainAudio.com. The tour will kick off in Ottawa, ON on August 4th and head as far west as Vancouver to wrap up back east in VESPERIA‘s hometown of Oshawa on Aug 27th. This is VESPERIA‘s second cross Canada tour in 2016, previously supporting Finnish metal masters KALMAH during the month of April.

The cloudy beginnings of VESPERIA lay etched in the gorged bodies of former musical projects among the now four-member band. Twisting, writhing and forcing their aural onslaught upon metal audiences across the globe have sincerely ensured the band’s continuity through all the harsh and arduous battles modern metal bands are bound to encounter in their tenures.

Established in 2012 by vocalist/ bassist Morgan Rider, the sound, direction and theme of the music quickly and naturally evolved into the style of fierce and heroic metal the band is now known and praised for.

Shortly after releasing their first full-length album Voyage from Vinland, VESPERIAredefined themselves and further focused their direction with the 2012 demo, The Swordsman. In 2013, the band independently funded and released their 2nd full-length album An Olden Tale, drawing the ears and attention of metal fans around the world and demonstrating their true mastery of their craft. During that same year, the band also independently funded and completed several Canadian tours to support the album.

Early 2015 saw the band enter the studio once again to record some demo material, which would become The Iron Tempests EP. During this time, the band toured Canada from coast to coast and also made an appearance at Wacken Open Air in Germany, where they won the title of 2015 International Wacken Battle Champions, a second time win for the band’s frontman, Morgan.

With their most fierce music written to date and a bounty of opportunity awaiting,VESPERIA continue to hungrily eye 2015 as the year they will make their mark upon the Earth.

HOWLING GIANT is what happens when three nerds write about space travel, doomed seafarers, and a sentient android hellbent for a camel killing death crusade. HOWLING GIANT plays self-indulgent, drop-tuned, fuzzed out riffs that could curdle milk. “Mothership’ sets the scene for the Black Hole Space Wizard universe. Mankind has ravaged earth and has been forced to live on a giant space station which they revere as the pinnacle of human achievement. About halfway through the track we start to focus on a group of humans answering a call to defend the Mothership from an unknown entity.”

About:

HOWLING GIANT! The very name summons up mental images of a huge mutated orc-warrior astride an even more gigantic mastodon, ready to bring death, doom, damnation and destruction (and many other things beginning with “d”) down upon its enemies.

Names matter, and something magical happened when three nerds obsessed with all that is fuzzed-out, riffed-out, and heavy came together to compose cosmic odes to space travel, doomed sea-farers, and even an android on a camel-killing crusade (what harm did the poor camel ever do to him?), under the name Howling Giant.

Drummer Zach Wheeler says the name is no accident and reflects the band’s music. “Howling Giant sounds a lot like a loud beast, which is what we strive to do musically. We aim to create a full sound that people might normally expect from a five-piece rather than a power-trio.” Indeed, by employing the three-piece format, Howling Giant is following in the footsteps of legends like Motorhead, MC5, Cream, and Corrosion of Conformity; good company to be in! As the band’s philosophy would have it wisely: “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Hailing from Nashville, Howling Giant obviously had some special metal immunity to all the country and western music in the air. The boys started jamming at school in Boston with an aim to move away from overtly serious music and have fun, describing their music accurately as “loud, energetic, heavy, melodic, and cosmic.”

Overall, Howling Giant’s music forms part of a fascinating Black Hole Space Wizard concept EP series. As guitarist Tom Polzine explains, “Musically we aim to write songs that are melodic, catchy, and head bang-able. As a concept series, we strive to conjure up space-themed imagery of heroes and villains at war, introducing the story and setting the scene of things to come within the Black Hole Space Wizard Universe. We’re not trying to spell out the entire story so much as we are creating scenes to provoke your imagination.”

Writing is very much a collaborative effort. “We usually come up with a general theme, then we write riffs and musical passages to support said theme. After that, we work on overall arrangements to create a nice flow and build within the song. Lyrics and vocal melodies come last as an icing on a very meaty cake. We find the flow of an album is just as important as the flow of an individual song and we strive to make each song unique. We wanted to include a combination of heavy, spacey, doom, and thrash, all wrapped up in a crunchy garage-sounding blanket. Fans can expect two more EPs within the Black Hole Space Wizard Universe. And with an overflowing riff bank, who knows how long we’ll go.”

Such far-out music deserves far-out lyrics, and Howling Giant is prepared to go to extreme lengths to get them. As bassist Roger Marks reveals, “We have a strict regimen of smashing our heads into walls daily until lyrics finally come to us.” As for inspiration, “We are inspired by science fiction and occult rituals, as well as books, movies, and other music.”

As part of an overall concept, the EP paints four distinct scenes.

The pinnacle of mankind.

An exodus from Earth.

The Black Hole Space Wizard destroying everything.

A lone survivor trapped on a ravaged Mother Earth.

In Roger’s own words, “The first track is a little more progressive, packed with riffs both dark and triumphant. The second track is all about build and groove. The third track is thrash, metal, and destructive. The final track is spacey with doom elements.”

Overall, it you are one of the many that wishes Mastodon had continued in the cosmic, crushing progressive manner of Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain, Howling Giant is your dream band!

Vivek Venkatesh proudly presents a unique celebration of film, music and academic research in metal music studies titled Doomed to Death. This unique summerGrimposium festival will feature a live music event on August 5 with performances from extreme metal bands Misery Index, Vastum, Vengeful and Cardinal Wyrm, preceded by an exclusive live interview with the founding members of death metal/grindcore veterans Repulsion.

And on August 4, Grimposium will host the Canadian premiere screening of Death by Metal – the biopic of Chuck Schuldiner, late frontman of the legendary extreme metal bands Death and Control Denied – as well as a death metal vocal workshop, an industry panel on the economics of extreme metal and an academic symposium, all hosted at Concordia University (VA114 Cinema, 1395 Rene-Levesque Ouest).

Jason Netherton, singer and bassist for Misery Index, says that the band “… is looking very much forward to Doomed to Death! TheGrimposium events are notably fantastic contributions to the extreme metal underground, and we are honored to be able to participate in this stellar event alongside such a ferocious mix of bands! Revel in Flesh!” Pranjal Tiwari, drummer and vocalist for Cardinal Wyrm states: “We can’t wait to return to Montreal, one of our favourite cities, and we have an album’s worth of new songs since the last time we played there. The bill that Grimposium has put together is a varied and interesting one with a bunch of stellar bands from different subgenres – we are very excited to bring the audience down into the belly of doom metal during our set, and lay a pall of heaviness over the evening’s proceedings.”

The live interview with Repulsion is at 16h30 at Co-op Katacombes; it is free and open to the public. Scott Carlson and Matt Olivo, founding members of Repulsionwill be interviewed by Albert Mudrian of Decibel Magazine and Jason Netherton from Misery Index about their role in the development of the genres of death metal and grindcore, and the influence that Repulsion has had on the global extreme metal scene.

The Death by Metal screening is free to the public and will take place at 19h00 on August 4 at the VA114 cinema at Concordia University (Facebook event here). There will also be a post-screening Q&A with director Felipe Belalcazar. The screening will be preceded by a death metal vocal workshop led by Marie-Hélène Landry ofObsolete Mankind and Sébastien Croteau of Necrotic Mutation. In addition, the event includes a bilingual panel on the Economics of Extreme Metal with Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index), Michael Berberian (Season of Mist), and Michelle Ayoub (Broken Board Montreal).

Finally, the Doomed to Death Academic Symposium will be held from 12h00 – 14h30 on August 4 at Concordia University’s Department of Education (FG 5.345, 1610 Rue Ste Catherine). For the first time since its inaugural event, Grimposium will feature a symposium featuring the academic and professional work of members of Misery Index and Vastum. Daniel Butler from Vastum, as well as Jason Netherton and Mark Kloeppel from Misery Index will explore the intersection of psychoanalysis, media studies and tourism management in the domain of extreme metal music studies and showcase their respective graduate research and professional projects (abstracts and more information are available here). The session will be moderated by Concordia University’s Lee Mellor, a SSHRC doctoral fellow, and a PhD Candidate in the Individualised program. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Green Jellÿ (pronounced “green jello”) started more than 30 years ago and has had over 400 band member changes, plus has sold over 2 million records to keep fans still knocking heads!

The band has had hundreds of members during its lifetime, with Bill Manspeaker the only consistent member throughout. The lineup during their most popular album release, ‘Cereal Killer’ is typically referenced as it contained several musicians who went on to appear in other major 1990s bands, such as Danny Carey and Maynard James Keenan of Tool. Green Jellÿ is best known for ‘The Three Little Pigs’, a #1 selling single on Billboard with a Grammy nominated music video.

Formed in 1981 in Kenmore, NY, by founding member Bill Manspeaker, the band was originally named Green Jellö, but changed the name due to legal pressure from the owners of the Jell-O trademark, Kraft Foods, who claimed that it was an infringement of their trademark. Throughout the early 80’s, Green Jellÿ performed throughout New York, opening for bands like the Ramones and New York Dolls. Canadian Metal Minstrels SCYTHIA Reveal New Play-Through Video For ‘Lineage’ via Gear Gods

Canadian progressive/power folklore metallers SCYTHIA recently released their newest full-length offering, Lineage. SCYTHIA guitarist and vocalist Dave Khan states, “We’re stoked to have our playthrough of “Lineage” up with Gear Gods! We use some really unusual gear. I play a custom-made Warrior Black Knight with X2N active pick-ups into an ENGL raider 1 x 12, and AJ plays a Ibanez RG premium through a Blackstar HT Stage 100.”

Although the band primarily self-produced the album, Lineage features engineering from Nino Laurenne (Firewind, Finntroll, Wintersun, Ensiferum) and Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Powerwolf), and mastering from Svante Forsback (Rammstein, Volbeat, Firewind, Apocalyptica). Nino Laurenne is also responsible for mixing duties on the album. Lineage was recorded at LSD Studios in Lubeck, Germany and Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland.

SCYTHIA are gearing up to perform at two more events this summer before heading out on a tour this fall (details coming soon). See below for all currently confirmed performance dates.

Like a charging bear Scythia have been playing progressive power metal with a twist of folklore since 2008. Scythia has coined their own sound while drawing influences from different genres such as celtic/gypsy folk music, power metal, death metal and progressive rock. Scythia’s albums and performances feature rich, poetic storytelling and grand tales that vividly captures the imagination of their listeners. Because of this, they have taken the independent scene by storm as they gather more and more fans both domestically and internationally. Scythia acquired its name from vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan’s infatuation with ancient Slavic imagery and melodies inspired from Balkan music. The name is fitting for a grandiose sound as Scythia is also an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia, and even into eastern Scandinavia.

Scythia delivered their first album “Of War” in 2010 where the band’s distinctive sound was forged, which carried on to their next release “Of Exile” in 2011. These albums featured sound effects, narration and classical instrumentation to help drive home their story through the medium of concept albums. Touring and press associated with these albums garnered recognition for the band as they were nominated for the Best Metal Group/Duo for Canada’s Sirius XM Indies – Independent Music Awards. Other nominees include Bison B.C, Derelict, Devin Townsend Project and Mares Of Thrace. This is a great honor for the band to be included as nominees for these awards since they represents the Canadian independent music scene.

In February 2014, Scythia had its sights set on new and larger horizons. They released their 3rd full length album “Of Conquest”, which was engineered/produced by Lasse Lammert (Alestorm, Gloryhammer, Halcyon Way, Svarsot) at LSD Studios in Lubeck, Germany. Co-produced by Shaun Thingvold (Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God, Fear Factory), Mixed by Nino Laurenne (Ensiferum, Wintersun, Kiuas, Firewind) at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland, and Mastered by Svante Forsback (Rammstein, Firewind, Korpiklaani,Apocalyptica) at Chartmakers in Helsinki, Finland. “Of Conquest” let to an overwhlemingly popular response and saw the band co-headline a major festival in Brazil and other festivals in the southeast USA in 2015.

“Of Conquest” sonically paved the way for their 4th full-length release “Lineage”, which was recorded using the same production team. 2016 sees Scythia getting ready for more touring in Canada and the US, and setting sail across the seas to international venues.

Vancouver-based Without Mercy certainly stays true to its name. Ruthless and menacing, these Canadian metal titans have cultivated and redefined the phrase, “Fuck Pussy Metal”.

Founded in 2004, Without Mercy has gone from strength to strength over the years. They released their first EP “All Else Fails” in 2007 completely independently and used its humble beginnings to start the catapulting of performances, internet presence and radio play. In 2009, Without Mercy went on to record their self-titled full length album using the same team that worked on records by Devin Townsend, Mudvayne, and Marilyn Manson. Like Animals are breaking free of the constricting chains of modern music and are busy creating their own uninhibited style of spastic-math-metal graced with emotionally-charged vocals. Like a wild animal each member maintains a sense of chaos through their arpeggio guitar and bass sections, unorthodox drums peppered with dynamic changes, and finally tempered by the wavering vocals soaring just slightly above the instrumentals both in tone and feeling. VOW OF THORNS have been conceptualizing albums and pushing the boundary between aggressive and emotional. What once served as an anagram for Kevin Hawthorne’s solo work is now a joint effort with Dustin Richards, where the duo has quickly become one of the most intimidating musical ventures to date. The duo have been constructing songs unanimously and without interruption in a seamless writing process to craft work fueled by their musical and environmental influences. Constantly shifting between disparaging black metal vocals and triumphant guitar hooks dripping with doom-encrusted bass riffs and theatrical drums. The band pairs the forces of black metal and doom, blending the two styles with ease while maintaining a certain sense of tension and uncertainty in the air.
