NINJASPY, a trio of blood brothers have been experimenting with metal fusion since 2006. Hard, heavy, hook-laden music that runs the gamut of reggae, surf, metal and more make up the band’s rule-breaking formula for notoriety. All this combined with an explosive and powerfully unhinged live show got NINJASPY off the ground in a hurry. Releasing their 2007 debut ‘Pi Nature’ and their 2013 EP ‘No Kata’ with a graphic novel, the band of brothers have teamed up once again with prolific producers GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mudvayne, Gallows) and Ben Kaplan (Biffy Clyro, Atreyu, Haste the Day) for their next full length ‘Spüken’ due out April 14, 2017.

Years in the making since spring 2014 when NINJASPY launched the “Jump Ya Bones” and crowd funding Campaign, the band was able to raise $15,000 to fund the new full length. They began recording in November 2014, taking their culmination of nearly a decade of songs and narrowing them down to an epic 10 track experience to demonstrate all their downbeats to breakdowns to their weaving of reggae, hardcore, metal and much more.

“These 10 songs span a decade, so there are a lot of different feels happening from song to song that represent what we got into over the years. It’s like we spent 10 years swallowing everything life threw at us, then we threw it all back up again, and are now able to listen to the blended, half-digested version of it.” says vocalist / guitarist Joel Parent.

‘Spüken’ was recorded and mixed sporadically over the next two years at in Vancouver BC and in the spring of 2016 between recording sessions, the band teased fans with a filmed and recorded live acoustic performance of their track ‘Azaria’, a song that is included with full metal instrumentation on the new genre-bending album. It showed the true diversity of the band and their ability to take manic and intense music and make it tender and raw.

Edmonton, AB’s SOMETHING MECHANICAL will be releasing their new EP ‘Less Than Human’ on March 17, 2017 to follow their 2015 self-titled debut album. Inspired by Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Days Of The New, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, vocalist/ guitarist Colin Pearce describes their music as “original, honest, blue collar, catchy and straightforward!”

The band pulls no punches whatsoever when it comes to the theme of their music. “Rebel! Stand up for yourself. Fight against the seemingly inevitable normality of the world. Be your own person on your own path whenever you can.”

Pearce feels that ‘Less Than Human’ will be well-received with its five hard hitting tracks.

“We really trimmed away the fat, so to speak, we focused on each song more fully and our fans will be able to hear that. We’re happy with it and we think they will be too.”

Leading up to the EP’s release, the rockers have teamed up with AllAboutTheRock.co.uk to premiere their second single ‘In Shadows’, a track about the celebrity stalking.

DOUBLE EXPERIENCE released their third full-length, “Unsaved Progress” via their label Colfax Music in April of last year. The album includes their single “The Glimmer Shot”; a Destiny-themed rock anthem, which earned them accolades from the creators of the video game itself plus their cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘Godzilla’. Taking the next step from their previous album – initially released exclusively on collectible trading cards, the band utilizes classic video-game inspired artwork and packaging. About:
Known for their formidable musicianship, virtuosic guitar solos and powerful songs, OmnisighT is masterfully blurring the lines between melodic hard rock and progressive metal. Beginning as collaboration between vocalist/guitarist Raj Krishna and drummer Chris Warunki, they created the impressive ‘Path’ debut album in 2012. Their live line-up was consolidated with the addition of Dave Shannon on bass and guitarist Blake Rurik. ‘Path’ was followed up by the 2013 ‘Wave Particle’ EP.

Like all truly visionary musicians, band co-founder Raj was driven to create unique music. “I’ve been writing and singing songs since I was a little kid. We never seemed to hear heavy prog music that had shredding and hooks at the same time. It always seems you get one or the other….Having technical musicianship with good song-writing, shredding licks, and big hooks was the whole idea.”

Raj sums up OmnisighT’s music thusly: ‘Proggy, hooky, shredding, sad, and powerful!’

While Raj is justifiably proud of OmnisighT’s recorded output, he sees the importance of performance. ‘Live is where the band really shines! We put on a show, running around smiling and shredding. The band plays with more intensity…we often give the headliners a run for their money.’

“One night while we were having practice, Gus the guitarist came up with this crazy riff that actually sounded like a nightmare. Vancouver, BC’s WITHOUT MERCY released their latest EP ‘Mouichido’ during May of last year. The EP was a rebirth for the band as it was a re-release of re-recorded material from their 2014 EP ‘Reborn’. ‘Mouichido’ is the Japanese word for “Repeat” or “to do one more time” and is perfectly titled for the EP to signify its re-release of previously recorded versions that now feature new vocalist Alex Friis and bass tracks recorded by Tristan Martin plus live performance being done by Ryan Loewen. Newly added to the EP was also a guest appearance by vocalist Mark Hunter of Chimaira on the track ‘In Waves’, which the band is releasing a new lyric video for and have teamed up with Bravewords.com to exclusively premiere.

Vancouver-based Without Mercy certainly stays true to its name. Ruthless and menacing, these Canadian metal titans have cultivated and redefined the phrase, “Fuck Pussy Metal”.

Founded in 2004, Without Mercy has gone from strength to strength over the years. They released their first EP “All Else Fails” in 2007 completely independently and used its humble beginnings to start the catapulting of performances, internet presence and radio play. In 2009, Without Mercy went on to record their self-titled full length album using the same team that worked on records by Devin Townsend, Mudvayne, and Marilyn Manson. Without Mercy rode the attention wave of their self-titled debut, using the escalation to begin a relentless performance schedule that would lead them far from their hometown and include over 200 live performances. No stranger to tenacity, in only a few short years Without Mercy have achieved; being the only indie metal band in Western Canada to have two tracks available on Rock Band 3, being featured in Tattoo Savage Magazine, and pioneering the phrases, ‘You Smell Like A Bitch’ and ‘Fuck Pussy Metal’ – which have now become synonymous with the band.

In 2014, Without Mercy unleashed third studio release, “Reborn”. Western Canada’s decibel breaking heavy metal festival Loud As Hell returns for its sixth consecutive year presented by Semchuk Productions, Jurassic Ink Custom Tattoo, Prairie Fire Events, and Asher Media Relations. Hosted in the Alberta badlands in Drumheller, this year’s three day festival from August 4th-6th features 40 bands from across Western Canada and beyond. Ready to resurrect the roaring echoes of the dinosaurs that once ruled the area millions of years ago, the 2017 headliners Detroit tyrants BATTLECROSS will be melting the faces off headbangers and sure to stir a massive pit along with stoner rockers Vancouver’s BLACK WIZARD will fellow city comrades sludge riffers BISON and Canadian 80’s thrash legends AGGRESSION. The festival also includes various vendors, tattoo artists, suspension demos, guitar and drum clinics. Full line-up and set times listed below.

Out Now! Edmonton’s ABSINTHE FROM SOCIETY Streaming Full EP ‘The Angels Ignored Us’

First launching on to the Edmonton metal scene in 2006 and releasing their debut EP ‘Project Infection’ in 2012, ABSINTHE FROM SOCIETY return in 2017 after a short hiatus with their next release ‘The Angels Ignored Us’ out now as of February 24th and streaming in full at the following link: https://absinthefromsociety.bandcamp.com/releases

Comprised of Ian “Saint Absinthe” Harper, the founder of the band (vocals, guitar and keyboard) and Adam “The Caveman” Roberts (drums & percussion) with Lexi “Shitkicker 9000” Graham (bass & vocals), the trio combine an aggressive sound with ethereal texture.

Their new EP ‘The Angels Ignored Us’ touches on emotional themes with a raw heavy backdrop.

Band founder Ian Harper comments:

“Existing fans will love it and hopefully other people who hear it for the first time will be impressed. The EP has a lot of raw sound, which was part of the goal for the EP. We didn’t want anything overly produced because that seems to be the trend these days, and we feel that live music is really at the root of any musical renaissance.”

Influenced by bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, The Tea Party and The Foo Fighters, ABSINTHE FROM SOCIETY are not trying to be innovative, but simply pushing to entertain and reach as many people as possible.

“We find our music attracts different people. We have a heavier sound, but we do have softer melodies. My lyrics are emotionally charged and give each track its own personality. In this new EP, my writings deal mainly with relationships and especially toxic ones, which I’m sure many can relate to along with feelings of frustration and anger as well as sadness. Overall, whether you’re a mosher or someone who stands and grooves, we find we’ll appeal to most in the metal spectrum.”

Big Rock Brewery & METALHEADS UNITED Presents the 420 Music & Arts Festival at Distortion – Live Music Venue in Calgary, AB, Canada, April 20, 21 and 22, 2017.

The 420 Music & Arts Festival is a three day celebration featuring 22 Stoner Rock, Desert Rock, Doom & Sludge Metal and Fuzzy, Kick Ass Rock n Roll bands surrounding the culture that is 420. Headlining this inaugural year all the way from Dallas, TX for their first Canadian performance, stoner legends WO FAT, Vancouver’s ANCIIENTS and Edmonton/ Vancouver based BLACK MASTIFF.

In addition to all the rad music, festival attendees will have the opportunity to view and purchase the work of select local artists, artisans and craftsman at the 420 Expo, Saturday, April 22 at Distortion from 10am-4pm. Interspersed with vendors of interesting and eclectic wares will be information on medical marijuana and hemp products and even more 420 enthusiasts. Select vendors, artists and marijuana related companies will be available in the evenings at the festival as well. NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) will be in attendance to answer questions.

You will be able to indulge your desire for munchies with a variety delectable culinary creations from some of Southern Alberta’s best food trucks. If that isn’t enough, each night of the festival there will be an opportunity to show off your glorious facial hair in our beard contest. Celebrity judges will decide who moves onto the final round on the last night of the festival where one beard will rule them all!
