HATRED REIGNS’ New Video “Absentia” Blurs The Lines Between Reality and Illusion

New Album “Awaken The Ancients” Out Now!

L-R – Jeff Calder – Guitars, Adam Semler – Bass & Vocals, Neil Grandy – Drums, Mitchi Dimitriadis – Vocals

Unleashing their auditory journey “Awaken The Ancients” this past December, Canada’s brutal force Hatred Reigns not only released a full-length record, but a conceptual epic that traverses uncharted realms of sound and emotion. The album’s narrative follows a protagonist grappling with oppressive forces, leading to a summoning of the ancients who rise to liberate the tormented from their prolonged suffering. Plunged into an endless abyss, the tormented emerge upon a desolate shore, surrounded by aimless souls.

In a quest for liberation, the damned are ferried across by Charon who must navigate treacherous planes, confronting challenges from demons above and lurking waters below. Their odyssey takes them across the enigmatic river Styx, lured by the ancients towards Necropia, where ultimate judgment awaits.

The seventh track/story of eight on the album is “Absentia”, which tells the part of their tale of the vessel venturing onward, with the treacherous waters proving to be a metaphorical battleground. The Ancients, masters of manipulation, distort the perceptions of the voyagers. The chronicle’s protagonist’s senses are tampered with, blurring the lines between reality and illusion.

To give a visual admiration of this track’s relentless pillaging, Hatred Reigns has put together a 3D animated lyric video that can be seen and heard via its premiere on Ghost Cult Magazine HERE.

An eight-track sojourn into other worlds, paying homage to classic films and literature as well as their musical influences, “Awaken The Ancients” was mixed and mastered by vocalist Mitchi Dimitriadis, who also played a pivotal role in bringing guitarist Jeff Calder’s vision to life. Together with Calder, Dimitriadis developed orchestration soundscapes, incorporating percussive sounds, spoken word elements, and digital sound samples into the music.

Pedro “Lordigan” Sena, the album’s designer, crafted a masterful artwork piece that vividly depicts countless aimless souls preparing to face judgment. This artwork aligns seamlessly with the album’s thematic exploration and adds depth and vibrancy to the overall experience.

The tracks on the album are a testament to the band’s diverse influences, seamlessly woven into a unified entity that reflects their collective vision. The sonic journey they offer is a compelling fusion of their musical roots and is suggested for fans of Carcass, Behemoth, and Cryptopsy.

“Awaken The Ancients” was released on December 1, 2023, and is available at the following links:

“Hatred Reigns’ Awaken the Ancients is Brutality in Sound and Theme… For those of you who can’t get enough of their brutal technical death metal thematically based on What Dreams May Come, Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and love wallowing in the murky anguish of life’s darkness, take an audio gander at the stream of the album.” – Decibel Magazine

“this is a slab of high density, very technical death metal that fans will love” – Real Gone Rocks

“Hatred Reigns’ core death metal is sturdy, with bass guitar leads and overactive blast beats giving a technical spark to the album.” – Heavy Music HQ

“Fast, barebones, guttural death metal is what Hatred Reigns offer us here, and it’s bound to awaken the ancients indeed… If you’re into death metal at all, chances are good that you’ve heard this kind of no-frills death metal before, but in this crowded genre, Awaken the Ancients is certainly worth a listen. 4/5” – The Metal Crypt

“Hatred Reigns play to their strengths on this album opener (Awaken The Ancients), delivering speed and fury, but impressive agility as well as aggression. They unleash madness in the viciously sizzling and skittering riffage and ruthlessness in the bone-smashing hammer blows that segment the frenzies, and the monstrous guttural growls expel the words in barks that are almost as fast as the backing instrumentation. But the band also switch things up, slowing the tempo and injecting weirdly swirling arpeggios and then hitting the accelerator to bring forth an even more demented and delirious escapade, this time fronted by crazed screams and screeches as well as gritty growls, and propelled to further heights of lunacy by a fret-melter of a solo and bursts of maniacal drum battery. When the band decelerate again, the chords elevate it into an otherworldly realm, both menacing and haunting, and the band also layer in a little bass solo, a few humongous bass drops, and a hulking, lurching stomp. But of course they go back into the fast lane for one last burst of high-adrenaline barbarity as the song surges to the end.” – No Clean Singing

“‘Departing Archeon’, grabs me where I didn’t expect (You can see the video for this at the bottom of this page). This time the vocal and lyrics are instantly engaging… accessible and menacing ‘Welcome… We’ve been waiting for You…’ which somehow made me smile from ear to ear. And just wait for that main riff – it’s f**king perfection. Simple, brutal and so utterly worthy of a headbang. Looking over the release notes they compare their release to ‘Origin’, Suffocation, and Hideous Divinity, but I’m getting vibes of classic Thrash and Death Metal. Think early Sepultura, Gorefest and Carcass, especially with that DIY ethos those thrown in too. It enables them to keep their influences close to their heart and do exactly what they want to. Overall, it took me a few listens to the album to appreciate how good it is. It’s a complex album that doesn’t hide behind overly technical playing … it knows how to keep the riffs simple, crunchy and heavy… Incredible stuff.” – Music Trespass

Prepare for a relentless onslaught of vulgar, belligerent punk, sludge, and sweat as Ivy Gardens, the sonic architects of chaos, emerge from the shadows of Niagara, Ontario with their first full-length album “Goon”, arriving on April 19, 2024. Brace yourself for an immersive experience as the band delivers a nearly endless stream of beaten-to-hell drums, searing organs, throbbing bass synths, and a liquid wall of guitar sludge. Their first single, out is “Boner”, their very own feel-good hit of the summer. They comment:

“Opening with a relaxed groove that builds and builds to the heaviest possible climax, Boner has been a major highlight of our live set since it was introduced. Following the more relaxed pacing of the song, the softer vocal performance less seen in our music tells of a (seemingly) simple disagreement between two bitter individuals. Its bridge, the “101010” dirge, is by far the heaviest composition we have achieved to date, and we are so excited to finally send it out into the world.”

The album “Goon” contains many tracks that current fans have been hearing live for a while. They know “Boner” is coming and Ivy Gardens knows many of them are frothing at the mouth for it. Since their thunderous inception in 2021, Ivy Gardens has been carving a path of destruction across the east coast of Canada and that will continue with a summer tour announced in the coming weeks.

The volume is crushing, leaving no room to breathe—the auditory manifestation of a panic attack. With no respite, Ivy Gardens invites you into their realm, where the mosh pit never stops, and the phantom ring in your ears serves as the only encore. “Goon” is recommended for fans of Kyuss, Truckfighters, and Queens of the Stone Age.

Watch and listen to the music video for “Boner” via its premiere on DoomedAndStoned HERE.

Debut Album “Genocidal Nemesis” Out April 2024

Opium Death, a Chicago, USA-based band, is gearing up to release their first full-length album “Genocidal Nemesis” in April. Known for seamlessly blending thrash and death metal elements, the band has undergone significant evolution since its inception in 2012. Originally formed under the name Cazador, the band has faced lineup changes, but their commitment to modernizing classic 80’s thrash metal remains unwavering. The latest single “The Condemned” confronts dark and bleak subject matter as guitarist Irvin Gonzalez describes:

“At the time that I was writing this song, especially coming up with the lyrics, there was a trend of stories coming out in the news and social media about school bullying being an increasing phenomenon amongst children and how the victims ended up committing suicide. This angered me to write a song for those victims but in a way that reflects their thoughts and feelings in the afterlife.”

Musically, he goes on to say, it is a straightforward metal track and has a captivating groove which he hopes will lead people to reading the lyrics and taking bullying more seriously. While personally not condoning responding with life-taking intent, it is intended to make the listener angry and disgusted enough to take action.

With the release of the album Opium Death intends to showcase it at venues locally and regionally, where people can have their faces melted in real time with sonic blasts of passion and creatively wrapped up in a brutal package. Those with an interest in Gojira, Cannibal Corpse, and Cattle Decapitation.

Born in blood, conceived in Hell, and reanimated by accident! Bent on cannibalizing the entire human race, Blood Opera has already infected whole populations with their raunchy and often controversial live displays of violence, gore, and perverse sexual acts! With powerful operatic vocals, sleazy guitar riffs, and blasphemous lyrics inspired by some of the scariest movies ever made, one thing is for sure- if the gates of Hell are left open, it could mean the end of all humanity!

“Songs in the Key of Death” features album guests Morgan Lander (Kittie), Maurizio Guarini (Goblin) along with track voice-over guests Tony Todd (Candyman), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog), Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), and Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, X-Files, Star Trek).

0 Montreal’s CELL PRESS Presents Their Punky Dystopian Video “Original Uranium Baby” Off New Album “Cages” Out March 2024

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 16, 2024

Montreal’s CELL PRESS Presents Their Punky Dystopian Video “Original Uranium Baby”

New Album “Cages” Out March 2024

Canada’s Cell Press took its name from the 2001 Russian prison documentary “The Mark Of Cain”. The brutal humanity of that film is reflected in their music: on the surface, it’s raw and punishing, but there are complexities and nuances revealed once the surface noise has been embraced. The potent concoction of hardcore, sludge, punk, and metal is fully unleashed with their first full-length “Cages”, being released this coming March 2024. Leading up to the release, they are now dropping a video for the single “Original Uranium Baby”, a dystopian tale set in the town of Elliot Lake, Ontario in the year 2088, which vocalist/guitarist Sean Arsenian comments on:

“The first half of the tune was resurrected from a defunct dirty punk/noise-rock project that I was in prior to Cell Press. It’s catchy and has some swagger, but we took those riffs and threw them into the “human misery machine” and they came out the other side the way they sound as the 2nd half of the tune… a sludgier, coiling sewer-pipe runoff extrusion of the initial ideas… McGee’s drumming mutates into a really cool syncopated jazz swing meets primal caveman rage thing, and PQ is serving David Yow by way of Jacob Bannon on top of it all. This song has hooks, pummel, AND a bit of a sophisticated groove to it.”

The video can be seen and heard via its premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

According to the band, “Cages” jumps all over the place thematically from demanding clean drinking water for the people in the northern communities in Canada, to dystopian fiction in which the radioactive bones of the dead are used as currency, to address the current state of “truth” and what we consume as information on a daily basis and how it has been dividing society to the point that it is almost reminiscent of a holy war with men and political affiliations taking the place of gods.

Cell Press’ writing process is always collaborative – most of the songs start off in the form of a riff or riffs that guitar/bassist/vocals Sean Arsenian brings to the band. Sometimes Mark McGee will bring a drum idea, either a beat or a fill, to rehearsal and Arsenian writes a riff to that. The odd time a full structure of a song is presented to the rest of the band. The lyrics/vocals are always the last element of the song to be added. The music definitely affects the lyrical content. PQ’s lyrics are written drawing inspiration from the feeling of the song. For fans of anything catchy, fast, and wild, Cell Press is most recommended for fans of Unsane, Keelhaul, and Burnt By The Sun.

“Cages” is due out on March 8, 2024, via The Ghost Is Clear Records (Vinyl), Ancient Temple Recordings (Vinyl), and No List Records (Cassette) at https://linktr.ee/cellpress and http://cellpress.bandcamp.com.

What the press has said about Cell Press’ 2020 Self-Titled EP:

“From the grooves on “Piss Police” to the odd-timed melodic chords of “Blacked Out in Verdun,” everything moves in unexpected ways. All of this is perfectly set to the backdrop of PQ’s uniquely cackled screams… Cell Press is a great sludge metal EP that reminds the listener of the best aspects of this sub-genre. This EP makes the future appear bright for what is to come from this band. 8/10″ – Exclaim!

“You know that feeling, when you spin a new record for the first time and it just fucking destroys you? Well today I am happy to report, Cell Press outta Montreal have truly delivered the goods with their debut self titled EP. I mean fuck, is it any wonder this band rules, when they can boast members from the likes of The Great Sabatini, Biipiigwan, I Hate Sally, Architect. With their self-titled release, Cell Press give zero fucks about accessibility, instead they focus on delivering punishing aggression with a melting pot of sludge metal, noise rock, and grindcore.” – The Sludgelord

“a perfect showcase of their unique sound and style and leaves you wanting to hear more from the band. Their total disregard for the limitations of genres and boundaries results in the EP blending noise, grindcore, sludge, punk, groove and dark ambient among other influences. They perfectly blend raw aggression with groove and melody and aren’t afraid to shift gears to play with ambience and noise.” – Cave Dweller Music

“Warm fuzzy guitar tones bring a touch of the Sabbath to “Piss Police” with broken chords and momentary pauses giving the kind of sound that Raging Speedhorn look for to accompany the rampant venting screams of the vocals that unapologetically roar along during the montage.” – Metal Noise

“Cell Press’s debut self titled EP is definitely an interesting listen. I didn’t expect it to take me on the journey which it did. An aggressive sound runs throughout showing that this band don’t play by the rules, they’re making music the way they want to.” – The Independent Voice

0 METRO SOCIETY Walks The Gloomy Streets Of Jack The Ripper’s London In “Pieces of the Past”

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 15, 2024

METRO SOCIETY Walks The Gloomy Streets Of Jack The Ripper’s London In “Pieces of the Past”

New Album “London Conspiracy Chapter I 1898” Out March 2024

Metro Society, formed from the longstanding friendship between Chris Mangold and Ian Ringler, brings a rich history of musical collaboration to the forefront. The duo, known for their early endeavors in various garage/basement bands, has resurfaced with a captivating second album that explores the darker side of London’s history. Set for release on March 1, “The London Conspiracy Chapter I 1898” looks towards a new century as the Victorian age draws to an end, and an up-and-coming detective is thrown into a murder mystery. The band opens up about the latest single “Pieces of the Past”:

“This is the epic of the album. This song ranges from the up-tempo heavy hitting to progressively synced parts and incredible lead vocals and vocal harmonies. We consider it to be a type of showcase song as each member of the band has a few moments to shine on their respective instruments or talents. When George asked what type of vocals we were looking for over the breakdown section, we said “Something along the lines of Queen with some Roger Taylor-style layered backing harmonies”. George replied, “Queen is one of my favorite bands!.”

While it may seem odd to release an almost 10-minute-long song as a single, Metro Society figured it is one of the most memorable songs on the album. Vocalist George Maragaritopoulos had quite a challenge recording the lead vocals and vocal harmonies on this long track. The vocal melodies range from the heavier gruff style to a breakdown section with layered vocals that whisk you away into a world of intrigue and deception.

With progressive riffs, extended choruses, memorable melodies, and an atmosphere that is technical, mysterious, and foreboding, Metro Society takes you on a journey of betrayal, secret societies, and murder all seemingly linking back to the Ripper.

“I especially like the spirited opening track, A King In His Own World, which is more of an overture than anything and which features nice, clear-but-fuzzed-out guitar work by Chris Mangold (who also co-wrote the album) and some cool synthesizer lines from his co-writer Ian Ringler. Also good is Hills Will Roll, featuring interesting, inventive percussion by Will Mangold.” – DPRP – Review 2007 – A Journey in Paris

“The one great thing about Metro Society is that they don’t really sound like any other band on the prog-metal scene, so don’t expect any Dream Theater, Symphony X, or Vanden Plas moments here for the most part. Other than some dark aspects that might fall in line with latter day Fates Warning, this is very original sounding. Singer Brown has a voice that fits the brooding style of the music perfectly, whether he is hitting some soaring falsetto’s or the occasional mid-range gruff passage, in which he fluctuates between the two on the kick ass opener “King of His Own World”. The bands more melodic and catchy side surfaces on “Welcome Hope” featuring Brown’s tender vocals and some tasty guitar work from Chris Mangold. Hard hitting progressive metal, with beefy guitar and stabbing synths, is heard on “Hills Will Roll”, and the band really lay down the crunch factor on “Metro”, a killer instrumental with intricate bass lines, heavy riffs, wild synths, and flailing drum work. Brown almost hits Dio territory on the Medieval and progressive sounding “Purgatory”, and the band launches into multi-part, prog-metal of epic proportions on the near 19-minute “Lost in Paris”. This one features plenty of great textures and instrumental bits, as the band moves from acoustic sections to progressive passages to out and out metal.” – Sea of Tranquility – Review 2007 – A Journey in Paris

0 FROGG Rebels Against Working To Death w/ New Single “Dandelion” Off Forthcoming Debut Album

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – February 15, 2024

FROGG Rebels Against Working To Death w/ New Single “Dandelion” Off Forthcoming Debut Album

FROGG is a modern progressive and experimental technical trio located in the New York metropolitan area, USA. The concept behind the band is simple: create modern heavy music while striving to show off some originality in an often-over-processed genre. They released their debut EP “A Reptilian Dystopia” in 2019 and will have their first full-length this coming Summer 2024.

Having unveiled their first single “Wake Up” this past September, which featured a melange of styles, with the guitar solo section riddled with authentic Afro-Cuban instrumentation to a pop-punk-styled chorus for a more dynamic interpretation. FROGG is now divulging the second preview of their yet-to-be-titled album.

Entitled “Dandelion”, the track conveys one of the big messages from their music, to rebel against the structured process of being slowly worked to death. It’s smooth, yet technical and ready to take you on an intensive sprint of emotions, but also bring you to a calm retirement.

“Dandelion brings a much darker palette when compared to our previous single Wake Up, and features a lot of fun technical musical moments.” adds vocalist/guitarist Sky Moon Clark.

Expressing their artistry in its pure, complicated, and intricate form, FROGG is eager to share this passion with fans around the world. Their main ambition is to hit the live circuit with their perfect performance and brand-new line-up.

They are recommended listening for those who enjoy The Ocean, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, and Between the Buried and Me.

Past Reviews for 2020 EP “A Reptilian Dystopia”

“Frogg cover seemingly contradictory bases of portentous tech-death, galloping melodic thrash and hopeful, opne chord djent. It’s smart musical alignment with their theme of something new rising from the ashes of the old.” – Metal Hammer

“FROGG is a dangerous force of Technical Metal making themselves known!” – The Circle Pit

“The music is impressively performed and written. Crazy technical menageries of Adderall-fueled obsession meshed with emotive melody just spilling out everywhere. It’s a great time, and definitely worth checking out. Definitely a band to be watching in the future.” – No Clean Singing

“Besides the clever songwriting and incredible lead guitar work, I’m a fan of the way the album sounds, too. It’s almost certainly going to be too processed for some peoples’s tastes, but everything sounds wonderfully clear and distinct. The rhythm guitar tone is pleasantly crisp and the leads perfectly smooth, and the bass is super chunky. This is a promising EP, and I, for one, welcome our new amphibious overlords.” – Toilet Ov Hell

“This is an incredible EP, guys. Every one of these songs has made it into heavy rotation, and I am honestly so excited to hear more in the future.” – Metal Trenches

Kelevra is a melodic, progressive force radiating from the cold windswept Canadian prairies. They have made a name for themselves nationally with high-caliber live shows and two well-produced EPs. This March, they continue to cement their place in the metal world with the first full-length album “Oneiric”, which flaunts more of the riveting harmonies, aggressive riffs, and powerful lyrics that they have come to be known for. They comment on the newly released single “Cleanse With Fire”:

“This track is always an absolute technical burner to play – showcasing the breakneck tempos, varied and deft leaps between riffs, searing leads, and then wide-ranging shifts in feel and technique. The single showcases everything we are known for with this one – from all-out aggression one minute, undeniable grooves, and unexpected progressive and spacious explorations the next. The frantic and frenzied nature of the song reflects the ticking clock towards doomsday, and the listener must reconcile their place amidst the madness.”

Kelevra works collaboratively and the entire band contributes to all of the songs on “Oneiric” making it a diverse record that accentuates the different strengths each musician has. This group effort is a major reason why their sound has been described as so unique. No song is an exclusive reflection of one person’s style, but rather a unique collaboration of five creatives joined together. Their entire catalog has featured songs written by three different members and this dynamic has introduced three unique styles of lyricism.

An impressive release that will intrigue anyone who likes progressive and melodic metal, “Oneiric” is recommended for fans of Lamb of God, Unearth, and Gojira.
