Wacken Metal Battle USA announces its return in 2024 to crown one independent band to perform at the world’s largest gathering of metalheads from around the world. To date, the battle has sent 5 previous bands to perform on metal’s most prestigious stage. 2023 witnessed San Diego’s Fadrait crowned champion, following previous winners San Diego’s Mythraeum (2022), San Diego’s Monarch (2019), Anaheim’s Voices of Ruin (2018) and Philadelphia’s Corpse Hoarder (2017).

For the last 5 years of battles (2017-2019, 2022, 2023), Wacken Metal Battle USA has hosted battles across the country to send one independent metal band to perform at the world’s largest metal festival Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany. 2019 saw the festival celebrate its 30th anniversary, but due to Covid, the 2020 and 2021 editions were both canceled. As the metal community regains its strength, Wacken Open Air 2024 will be the 33rd edition of the festival and will be held from July 31st – August 3rd. The 2024 event is already sold out with a line-up that includes Scorpions, Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, In Extremo, Pain, Beast In Black and many more. Details here.

Wacken Metal Battle USA is part of an international competition that sees bands from across the country battle each other for the chance to win their spot among 30 other countries’ champions, and represent the USA in an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival: Wacken Open Air. The battles have been hosted at the festival for over a decade giving independent bands the opportunity to showcase their talents to an international audience along with the chance to win multiple prizes.

How it works:
Participating cities will host qualifying rounds plus a city final organized by a local city concert promoter where one band will move forward to the American national final (date and city to be determined). The winner of the national final will move on to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2024 and compete against the winners of 29 other countries in a final global battle. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry representatives.

Italian / Malaysian-based band Silent Angel is unveiling the second single “Tears of Celestine” accompanied by a lyric video in support of their forthcoming debut album “Unyielding, Unrelenting” to be released on Rockshots Records this coming November 2023.

“I wrote this song around 2014 / 2015 during the early days of the reforming of Silent Angel. Believe it or not, I wrote the music, structure, flow, and lyrics all in under 10 minutes. Everything just came together as a whole package almost instantly. All I did was close my eyes, freed my mind and I just penned the words onto paper and everything just flowed out like honey. The intro section became the core of the whole song and as I was strumming along to the chords, the pre-chorus and chorus sections just fell into place like perfect fit puzzle pieces. The guitar solo just flowed into my being almost instantly as well right after the musical idea was nailed down. It was one of the rare moments where I could execute what I conceptualized in my mind on the spot.” adds guitarist Eric “StormBlade” Poon.

An international collective Silent Angel, an Italian / Malaysian-based band that has its foundations deeply rooted in power and symphonic metal with a mix of progressive along with Japanese metal influence. Silent Angel’s debut album “Unyielding, Unrelenting” has been a long time coming. Working on a shoestring budget, Silent Angel started off by recording some demos and put out a roughly recorded EP just to see if the music had potential and it did. “This is definitely the most time ever spent on a music project for me, but I certainly believe in the music and the individuals that I am currently working with to make this dream a reality. The tracks are actually a selection of songs that I wrote back in the late 90s until the resurgence and reformation of Silent Angel in 2015 and subsequently, resumed writing and composing the music, lyrics, and song arrangement. About: Originally formed in 2000, and taking over a decade-long hiatus, the band returned in 2015 with a fresh new lineup and released two EPs along with gaining support on American, Canadian, Italian, Australian, and UK radio stations. The band was also honoured with recording a track for Samsung’s Milk Music Ad Campaign, plus performing a Malaysian tour where they headlined the IDX SummerFest, which was followed by two tours of Japan.

After the Japan tours, Silent Angel returned to the studios to record their full-length album but unfortunately were struck with tragedy with the untimely passing of their bass player putting the recording on pause.

Fast forward to 2020, Silent Angel brought in multi-award-winning recording and mixing engineer, Rahmad Kamikaze as the co-producer and welcomed bassist Dauz and professional drum sessionist PAE.

Moving in 2021, the beautiful and talented Italian soprano powerhouse Claudia Beltrame joined the band lineup, and later on with Italian keyboard and synth wizard, Davide Scuteri contributing his talent to the music, we’re now poised to unleash our full-length masterpiece upon the world in the very capable hands of our record label, Rockshots Records!

Buckle up for a relentless journey into aggressive alt-rock as Edmonton’s sonic titans Degenerator, unveils their latest creation, “The Abyssal Throne.” Led by Barrett Klesko (All Else Fails) on vocals, guitar, and bass, along with drummer Jonathan Webster (Pass of Era, ex-Striker), this highly anticipated debut release takes listeners on an exhilarating ride through stoner, sludge, grunge, and goth rock, pushing the boundaries of alternative music. The first single is “Eternalism”, which Klesko comments on:

“Time slips away fast. Aggression and melody. Balance the darkness. This was the first song crafted for the album, and it captures the essence of the album, both musically and lyrically. Prepare to have your senses shattered as Canada’s Display Of Decay unveils the chaos and power that can only be found in death metal in their sixth album “Vitriol” due out on Friday, October 20th from Gore House Productions.

Before it is officially unleashed, you can check out the whole album via its full-stream premiere on NoCleanSinging HERE.

The eight tracks on “Vitriol” will take listeners through distorted riffs colliding with thunderous percussion, creating a maelstrom of sound that leaves no room for compromise. The lyrical content covers a variety of topics ranging from pop culture references like Diablo & Mass Effect to darker undertones of acts of senseless violence and brutality. The band explains more:

“At long last, we are excited to finally announce our long-awaited new record and 6th installment into the discography, Vitriol! This album took a lot of the technical elements of ‘Art in Mutilation’ and blended them with the classic ‘DOD’ style of ‘bang your head, groovy riffs.’ I believe this album follows the trajectory our style has grown over the years, whilst still paying homage to the first few records of our discography.”

“Vitriol” was mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy) and assistant mix engineer Dominic Grimard. The cover art was done by Caelan Stokkermans with graphic design by Logan Wilson. The writing process consists of Sean Watson (Guitar – Vocals) and Brandon Siefert (Bass) slinging riffs back and forth, and getting a rough layout done to bring to the table. With the return of Logan Wilson halfway through the process, it’s become more of a unified process. ‘Familial Feast’ as an example, was written while they were tracking the record, and after they ended up scrapping a tune halfway through the recording process, this one came together extremely well.

“Vitriol” was born of rage and spite fueled further by the chaos and uncertainty felt worldwide over the last few years. It is recommended for fans of Pantera, Morbid Angel, and Cannibal Corpse.

Progressive rockers RAISED BY HAZE will be releasing their debut album “Touch The Sky” this coming November on Rockshots Records. Unveiling their first single “Prediction” (https://youtu.be/mDqH-GNcHLk), this past September, the band has their next introduction in the lead-up to their first full-length with the second single “Freedom”.

Guitarist Gabriele Robotti explains the song in further detail:

“‘Freedom’ is more than just a song – it’s a journey into the core of Raised By Haze’s musical philosophy. The lyrics, masterfully crafted by Valentina, delve into personal experiences and perspectives on life. In the track, my influences related to American rock from the ’90s and 2000s emerge, from Alice In Chains to Alter Bridge to Linkin Park, with the progressive vein surfacing in the song’s 7/4 time signature special section”

The album was conceived as a reflection of all of Robotti’s musical influences, aiming to weave a common thread through the diverse musical worlds that have inspired him.

“The foundational matrix for this album is arguably progressive rock and metal, with Dream Theater being the band that ignited my passion for playing the guitar during my childhood. However, the primary objective I set for myself with this album was to amalgamate all my influences, spanning from bands like Pink Floyd and Linkin Park to Pantera and Alter Bridge, and from classic 70s rock to modern progressive metal (including Opeth, Periphery, and Between The Buried And Me). Along the way, I ventured into various other musical territories.” adds Robotti.

While “Touch The Sky” is not a concept album, the lyrics, mostly penned by Valentina, draw heavily from personal experiences and the band’s unique perspectives on life and various situations. It can be said that the music serves as an artistic representation of their outlook on life, while the lyrics mirror Valentina’s experiences. The songs you hear are the culmination of this creative journey.

With their latest album “The Kvlt of Glitch”, Canada’s VVON DOGMA I is set to cement their status as a band that is unafraid to take risks and push boundaries. The album is a visceral and immersive listening experience, with songs that take unexpected twists and turns and showcase the band’s impressive musicianship. Fans of experimental rock and avant-garde music will want to dig into this release, especially the latest video for the track “Lithium Blue”, which 9-string bassist and founder Chaoth explains further:

“I just love that track, “Lithium Blue”. It was on the “Communion” EP but I felt like it needed a better production so I gave it a second chance and brought it in the studio and I love the result. From intricate high tapping patterns to the most caveman djent riff, it’s so satisfying.”

“The Kvlt of Glitch” is Chaoth paying tribute to every period of different influences that he had in his life, from 90’s alternative and nu-metal to modern electronic and ambient music and everything in between. For him, it’s very freeing to be the main songwriter because you don’t have to fight for your ideas, whatever goes so, this is a glimpse of his psyche. Lyrically, the album is very much fueled by dark feelings that have been following him his whole life.

Chaoth struggled to find the right people for the band until he enlisted drummer Kevin Alexander as a creative partner which brought his vision to the next level. Alexander embodies the balls and attitude that the outfit needs to feel right. And then Yoan MP joined on guitars and his old-time collaborator Blaise Borboën added some spice to it and produced the first EP. With this lineup, fans can expect a barrage of synthetic sound, impressive riffs, and melancholic dissonance. The album is recommended for fans of Unprocessed, Meshuggah, and Igorrr.
