“The song (Ancient Heart) itself, which swings between some appetizingly heavy progressive riffs and aggressive growls and more melodic moments (with clean singing behind them). A tough band to place in that regard, but one certainly worth seeking out as they continue to expand their sound.” – DeadRhetoric

Vancouver Alt-Prog KOSM Premiere Music Video “Ancient Heart” via Prog-Sphere

Vancouver progressive alternative metal KOSM have looked to the stars for inspiration, creating their own sound and story-telling mythos; a welcome break from the media-saturated negativity that threatens to overwhelm us; and like all good sci-fi / fantasy, KOSM’s songs reflect the world around us, they truly are 21st century sonic bards!
Inspired by Tool, Mastodon, The Agonist (Alissa White-Gluz era), Gojira and A Perfect Circle, KOSM have created a fan following both on their local scene and beyond, firstly with cover videos, and most recently with two singles “Ancient Heart” and “Space Mead”. The quintet is now revealing their debut music video for “Ancient Heart” with its premiere on Prog-Sphere.com. The single will appear on the band’s planned debut album entitled “Cosmonaut” slated for release later in 2018.
Drummer Sterling Paterson comments:
“We’re quite excited to debut our first music video for our single ‘Ancient Heart’. It’s a milestone for all of us because, while we’ve shot a few cover videos for YouTube, manifesting a picture to the lyrics that’s a bit more than just a bunch of dynamic shots of us playing our instruments, required a lot more thinking outside of the box. We had to work within the concept and theme of our upcoming album ‘Cosmonaut’, as well as the lyrical direction of the song itself, and taking into consideration we didn’t have much for budget, it was a lot of thinking on our feet to make something from nothing.
A lot of the credit goes to our vocalist Jessie for her creative direction and our photographer/videographer Lee Tebb for really helping us bring this video to life. It’s not like we had a few grand to throw around for special effects, professional grade audio/visual gear, etc; so working with what we had, we all couldn’t be happier.”

EPK – https://wp.me/pciNW-busAbout:
Our ancestors believed that our lives on Earth were reflected in the stars. ‘As Above, So Below’ was their wise wisdom, seeing the lights of the cosmic firmament as reflecting the lives of the people below. Moreover, they told tales, cloaked in mystical terms, but tales of the world around them, reflections through a glass darkly. Now, progressive metallers KOSM have looked to the stars for inspiration, creating their own sound and story-telling mythos; a welcome break from the media-saturated negativity that threatens to overwhelm us; and like all good SF/Fantasy, KOSM’s songs reflect the world around us, they truly are 21st century sonic bards!Inspired by Tool, Mastodon, The Agonist (Alissa White-Gluz era), Gojira and A Perfect Circle, drummer Sterling Paterson describes their sound as “female fronted progressive alternative metal.”
Creating interest on their local scene and fan following first with cover videos, along with two singles “Ancient Heart” and “Space Mead”, Sterling is stoked for fans to hear KOSM’s planned debut ‘Cosmonaut’ set for release in 2018.
“I think our upcoming album should be received well. The authenticity and sound of this band and how it has been received just blows us away. We want to tell a story that is inspired by our love of dark fantasy and H.P Lovecraft!”
Live, KOSM really do bring their audience to another dimension.
“Despite being a heavier band, people are coming to our gigs that don’t even listen to metal and are headbanging and having a riot! Both men and women come to our shows, it’s never a boy’s club. In one of our last gigs we were swamped with people wanting autographs on gig posters. We put on a show that’s akin to Tool and Mastodon. A good balance of heavy riffs and hooks crossed with hypnotic bridges and interludes whilst delivered over a series of different time signatures. People can expect to be taken on a journey where they’ll be thrashing around one moment and swaying to the music the next!”

“KOSM delivers the goods while touching bases in the same ballpark as TOOL, MASTODON and PERIPHERY, (they’ve previously covered Mastodons “Blood and Thunder”) with an emphasis on plenty of space rock intermissions” – Powerplay Magazine
“Remember when Mastodon were special, circa Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye, before that vision was lost? […] Well, Kosm are like Mastodon in those days.” – Hellbound.ca
“KOSM does a solid job of mixing technicality, mood and groove. […] They’re a well versed band with all kinds of moods and changes engaging your ears every split second.” – Technical Music Review
“KOSM cite Tool, Gojira and Mastodon as three of their main influences, and all three can be heard loud and clear on their new album, Cosmonaut. The technical, progressive musicianship of Tool meets the crushing grooves and rhythmic vocals of Gojira, and Mastodon’s ear for riffy, thunderous prog are all present on Cosmonaut, which features some of the most technical metal I’ve heard this year outside of, you know, technical death metal. ” – Decibel Magazine
“Lovecraftian progressive metal is on the table for Kosm’s debut. While bands like Mastodon and Tool come to mind in the way that the guitars are maneuvering around, limiting the band in that manner downplays what they are trying to do. There are so many different textures and flavors along the way it is really hard to get a grasp on what best defines them. But that’s perfectly okay, and keeps Cosmonaut interesting for its 66-minute runtime. The concept to it all keeps it on the rails while exploring a variety of emotions and levels of heaviness (including some that aren’t so heavy). There’s loads of potential here for the band to experiment with in future offerings. ” – Dead Rhetoric
“KOSM definitely show enough potential with this release to be a band that should be on your scopes.” – Noizze UK

KOSM is a progressive metal band hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada. Combining influences from Mastodon, Tool and Gojira; their sound is dynamic and unquestionably lethal. Since their induction in 2016, they have been making their mark in Vancouver’s metal scene as an absolute force to be reckoned with.
The origin of the band starts with Mike Slater (guitars) and Erik Leonhard (guitars) as a casual project, and they were quickly joined by Jessie Grace (vocals), Sterling Paterson (drums) and Michael Mastracci (bass) for some jolly cooperation. Swiftly, like hunters, they took off from there and released two singles; including the well received “Ancient Heart” music video. Familiar to members of the progressive metal covenant, and playing with themes from the H.P. Lovecraft and Bloodborne universes; KOSM is quite unique and authentically its own being. Their next release “Cosmonaut” is an LP loosely based on the Lovecraftian myth of Cthulhu and each song is meant to walk the listener through a story from beginning to end.
With even more material in the world and future albums planned, KOSM summons you to join them on this journey full of experimental and progressive metal.
