Fusing punk, post-grunge, and prog rock, Mississauga, ON’s EMPTY THREAT are an alternative band making noise in Ontario and Quebec playing shows routinely in Toronto, London, Montreal and more. Formed in 2011 by bassist Ryan Dobson and guitarist/singer Michael Roane, the duo acquired drummer David Jameson in 2014 and soon after they recruited second guitarist Matthew Roane to solidify their line up in 2015.
Wasting no time, the quartet is now planning the release of their debut EP entitled “Shutdown Nowhere” due out October 6, 2017. Teaming up with award winning producer/engineer/mixer Glen Robinson who is known for his work with such names as The Ramones, AC/DC, GWAR, Annihilator and Voivod, the EP is their first professionally recorded release.
Vocalist / guitarist Michael Roane comments:
“We are a young band, developing our style and pushing forward to provide a new sound experience. Most of the songs we have been working on for years – and have been through multiple edits and versions. This will be our first, legitimate attempt to introduce ourselves to the world – so we hope that fans will hear our songs and feel a slight familiarity to the genre, but will appreciate the unique touch we put in our songs – as we combine elements from multiple genres and use our effects to put a different perspective on old ideas. We also want people to know first and foremost our band is about creating passionate music that may resonate with other people. On the surface, we make music that has a carefully crafted intensity – like a chained beast tugging at the leash. For those who want to dig deeper, they see how this sound represents us, as people, and our struggles to reach our potential. We connect with our fans through these shared emotions.”
“Shutdown Nowhere” EP features six new crushing tracks full of introspective verse.
Roane adds “We aim to introduce ourselves by having a “new familiarity” feel to our songs. Veterans of rock and metal should be comfortable listening to our songs, but we aim to blend in elements that will surprise them.”

Teaming up with New Noise Magazine, the band is premiering their second single “Heliophobia” off the EP.
The band comments:
“The song tells the tale of a girl pushed to the edge by the torment from those around her. Ridiculed for her imperfections, she learns to hate everyone around her and becomes resentful towards herself for what she has become. However, if either party had simply taken the higher road and stepped above the hate – none of this would have happened. “Heliophobia” refers to how people are afraid to seek the truth and light. They either shelter themselves away to ridicule or degrade others, or corrupt truths to use as a weapon. Sonically, this song is fast, tight, and punky. The music races and pauses only briefly to reflect upon the state the world is left in.”

Live, EMPTY THREAT delivers a very high-energy and engaging show where they often improvise extended bridges and endings to songs to hype the crowd more. EP and track by track explained by the band:
The EP title Shutdown Nowhere refers to the overall theme and concept of the release. It refers to feeling disconnected with both yourself and what you believe – and how that interacts with people around you. You can feel lost and at a standstill. As a whole, the EP aims to capture and develop concepts of self-reflection and rejection of negative, controlling forces. Many of the songs are heavy, menacing songs that tackle self-pity and conflicting emotions within. They focus on rejecting negative personality aspects and people who bring down or control those around them.
1. Out of Sync – A dark, menacing, odd-rhythm song that dances to its own song. The lyrics and music focus on inner turmoil of conflicting thoughts and feelings and not being on the same page with yourself. It spirals into an “eye of the storm” moment of insanity before rising once more into a rejection of the imperfections and negativity inside oneself.
2. Heliophobia – The song tells the tale of a girl pushed to the edge by the torment from those around her. The music races and pauses only briefly to reflect upon the state the world is left in.
3. Afterburn Paralysis – The song is about an attempt — an awakening to try and develop into assertive lifestyle. It contemplates chance interventions and opportunities for change, are they real or only perceived to be real? The song blends effects and funky vibes to simulate the confusion and grogginess of waking up in an unfamiliar place and juxtaposes it with heavy metal and punk riffs to emulate the nightmarish revelations of reality. The song swells up and down on the sonic journey of restlessness.
4. Counterfeit – This simple song dwells on broken dreams and false hopes. It speaks on falling into a repetition of mediocrity. The music dances on the ups and downs of the grungy, funky melodies and strained vibe. The song grows to question if there is a reason for anything, or if we are destined to simply survive – rather than live.
5. Accommodate – This song is a rejection of the negativity of those around you. It criticizes censorship and control of others for your own beliefs or not taking responsibility for yourself. The lyrics chastise extremism and societal pressures. It challenges you to hold yourself accountable and develop yourself, instead of being held up by rich parents, politicians, religion, or popular opinions. The music is a droning, slow-burning flame that gradually roars to life in a blaze of disdain for taking advantage of others around you.
6. Knots (More Than Just Words) – The final song of the EP is about breaking from the mediocrity of the working life and building a new world. The cyclical groove of the song emulates multiple attempts of escape and the swift changes of small successes. The lyrics speak about reaching back to the innocence and freedom of years past, and how this is only achievable through working together with oneself and others. The song explodes in a sonic destruction of the structure and melancholy of adult society, and from under the rubble, we are thrust into a new opportunity to do things right.
