Montreal Avant-Garde Metal with An Oboe DISORIENTATION Unveils New Single “The Pact” To Welcome New Members

Montreal dark experimental metal band Disorientation returns with “The Pact,” a new standalone single that signals the beginning of the group’s next chapter. Following the acclaim surrounding their 2023 EP “Survival Mode,” the band now emerges as a fully formed lineup, an evolution that is both sonic and symbolic.

Formed in 2020 by Marie‑Claude Fleury and Daniel Daris, Disorientation quickly carved out a niche with their unsettling blend of harsh vocals, dissonant woodwind arrangements, and structures that defy conventional metal boundaries. Their 2021 self‑titled EP earned early praise from local fans and media outlets such as Metal Trenches and Metalperver, while “Survival Mode” pushed their sound further into unorthodox territory, drawing accolades like “oddly fascinating” (Real Gone Rocks) and “madness bottled into just wonderfulness” (The Doorway to Zine).

Now joined by guitarist Samuel Arseneau‑Roy (Spectral Wound, Basalte) and drummer Laurent Bellemare (Chthe’ilist (live), Basalte, Sutrah), Disorientation is stepping into a fuller, more organic incarnation of itself.

“The Pact” was intentionally crafted as a standalone release, an opportunity to integrate the new members quickly and establish the band’s updated identity.

“We decided to limit ourselves to a single track so we could bring our two new members into the band quickly. We had to take some extra steps to bring the music to life, but it was worth it. This is our best‑sounding effort to date,” says vocalist/oboist Marie‑Claude Fleury.

Musically, “The Pact” is a journey through tension, revelation, and unease. It opens with a distant, noisy oboe motif before erupting into a fast, jagged pace. The track shifts through abrupt stops, whispered exchanges, mid‑tempo introspection, and acoustic glimmers of light, only to be swallowed again by the return of its initial riff. The final section, driven by palm‑muted guitars and unsettling vocal textures, places the listener at a crossroads.

“Which way do you go? This is the moment where choices must be made,” adds Fleury.

Lyrically, “The Pact” explores the rapid formation of intense connections and the darker undercurrents that can accompany them.

“It’s about those people you meet and get close to very quickly. As the attachment forms, a dark side appears. Is the bond as positive as it first seemed? And where can it lead?” says Fleury.

The single’s artwork reflects this duality: two hands clasped willingly, yet bound by shackles, an alliance that is both chosen and constrained.

With the addition of Samuel Arseneau‑Roy and Laurent Bellemare, who, along with Fleury, also perform in Montreal’s Growlers Choir, Disorientation’s sound has expanded in depth and physicality.

“Having a real drum and an extra guitar player definitely improved our sound. We now sound fuller and thicker. We’re looking forward to creating more music together,” comments Fleury.

Although Disorientation has yet to make its official live debut, the newly completed lineup has already explored its chemistry through private semi‑acoustic performances, an early glimpse of the versatility and intensity they intend to bring to the stage. Their unsettling atmospheres, atypical structures, and the uncommon presence of the oboe within extreme music remain central to their identity. The band fully embraces its odd, miserable, in‑your‑face, and troubling sonic character, and with “The Pact,” they push those traits even further while solidifying themselves as a unified creative force.

“Anyone who loves powerful metal and classical music will love this unorthodox fusion project.” – New Noise Magazine (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

“Delving deeper into the eerie atmospherics of metal’s less-trodden path, we find Disorientation, a Montreal-based duo who eschews the symphonic metal genre’s usual dalliance with ethereal beauty, opting instead for an odyssey through sonic desolation. Born from the minds of Marie-Claude Fleury and Daniel Daris, Disorientation is the antithesis of grandeur and elegance, painting a world where the grotesque and the sublime collide.” – Idioteq (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

“A really good surprise, and a magical, tragic, lysergic EP, which immerses us in a Rank Xerox universe. 8.5/10” – MetalNews.fr (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

“This EP is obtuse, ugly and deeply troubled. Yet, at the same time, it’s oddly fascinating. (…) In terms of finding a way into Disorientation’s world of noise, there’s no easy route – and the duo seemingly want to keep it that way. For those who wrongly claim that extreme metal has nothing new to offer, this EP will gladly prove otherwise.” – Real Gone Rocks (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

“It is madness bottled into just wonderfulness. (…) I love how it goes between symphonic, hardcore, dark metal and just experimental noise at times, there’s a lot of orchestral arrangements and just bizarreness in this band, (…) This band is just advanced in ways that you’re either going to love it or hate it.” – The Doorway to Zine (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

“Moving away from the raw quality of the recording of their self titled debut EP with “Survival Mode” while Disorientation claim to have created something more straightforward this time around, that’s not the impression that we get. The Avant-garde duo instead go deeper down the rabbit hole and continue their perpetual forward motion with a ferocious and spine chilling trio of cuts that once again disorientate and disturb.” 8/10 – Metal Noise (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

“Montreal duo, Disorientation, aim to create a feeling of dizziness and nausea in the listener. If this fails, they can at least punish you with confusion. As an avant-garde metal act with a cor anglaise (English horn) and an oboe as their primary instruments, you can expect unorthodox interpretations of the metal orthodoxy. Survival Mode is their second release following 2021’s self-titled EP, and it’s the type of art that would have landed them an appointment with the hangman in sixteenth-century England as enemies of public decency. (…) Clearly, Igor Stravinsky is the main influence on this EP.” 7/10 – Scream Blast Repeat (2023 – Survival Mode – EP)

EPK – Disorientation – The Pact (single) (2026)

Publicist – Jon Asher – jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

“We are sure that our fans will be pleased because this song is a continuation and also a step forward. We have kept the core elements of our identity, but now, with the addition of Samuel Arseneau-Roy on guitar and Laurent Bellemare on drums, we are sounding fuller and more organic. The Pact is a little more subtle than any song from our previous EP. This time around, we focused on background elements such as different types of noise and back vocals to create the atmosphere we wanted.” – Marie-Claude (vocals/oboe) – Disorientation

“I have received the 2026 single “The Pact”and will share my thoughts on it. The intro is damn good. The Oboe and the suspense. The fast pace song with crazy back ground audio that create a dark eerie atmosphere. The riffs, vocals and break in the song is epic. The song is 7 minutes plus of pure magic. The composition and execution is top class. I do like how back ground audio that include voices is used to create the atmosphere in the song. For me this is a brilliant song by a brilliant band.” – Project Metal Music

“With occasional expansions of the lead vocals into what I’d describe as a more classical inspired mode of singing too. About the Single Artwork:

Marie-Claude (vocals/oboe): The artwork represents the 2-edged sword aspect of alliances; the hands that willingly hold each other and at the same time are coerced into a union by the shackles.

About the Single (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

Marie-Claude (vocals/oboe): It starts with a noisy intro with the oboe coming from far away. The song starts at a fast pace, takes a break to introduce the meeting, and the first riff restarts. A brutal stop leads to a suspiciously quiet passage where secrets are exchanged, then a mid-tempo riff starts, exposing the truth about your own condition without any outside interference. You spend some time in that bubble, where you can even perceive some light through an acoustic passage, but the outside world you fled comes back with a vengeance through the reappearance of the 1st riff. A series of palm mutes backed by disturbing voices puts you on high alert, then keeps going at a steady pace: this is the crossroads where you have to make choices and decide on a direction. Which way do you go?

Disorientation is a Dark Experimental Metal band hailing from Montreal, Canada. Created by Marie-Claude Fleury and Daniel Daris in 2020, the band aims to create a raw, disconcerting sound driven by woodwind arrangements and vocals that range from harsh aggression to intimate vulnerability. Escaping rigid genre boundaries, Disorientation aims to create somber, discordant, yet memorable songs.

In the fall of 2021, Disorientation released its first EP, which was well-received online, albeit with minimal promotion. Metal Trenches called it “a perfect band name and title for this self-titled EP,” while Turkey’s Metalperver wrote that it was “Interesting music, worth checking out.” The songs got airplay on media such as Dark Metal Radio, Sewer Spewer, The Autopsy Report, No Name Radio, and MTL Metal.

Building on that sound, Disorientation began working on a follow-up EP, which they released in December 2023. Titled ‘Survival Mode’ and geared with an improved production, the band has pushed through with more of the elements setting them apart: unorthodox vocal lines and song structures; dissonant woodwind arrangements; straightforward brutality and distressing atmospheres. The three songs were described as « oddly fascinating » (Real Gone Rocks), « not resembling anything else » (Music Waves), and « madness bottled into just wonderfulness » (The Doorway to Zine).

Now armed with a full lineup, consisting of Samuel Arseneau-Roy (Spectral Wound, Basalte) and Laurent Bellemare (Chthe’ilist (live), Basalte, Sutrah), the band is now unleashing « The Pact ». As Disorientation morphs towards a complete unit, this new Single serves as a sign of things to come.

Montreal, Canada’s avant-garde metal duo Disorientation returns to unleash their sophomore EP “Survival Mode” on December 1st to follow their 2021 self-titled debut. Presenting a much blunter and more straightforward record than its predecessor, the 16-minute, 3-track recording bends extreme metal, noise, and hardcore influences at its will pushing the envelope with unorthodox vocal lines, odd structures, with the accompaniment of dissonant oboe and English Horn arrangements to create a strong emotional reaction to reflect tactics for psychological survival in unpleasant situations.

The band adds:

“We are very excited to present Survival Mode to the public. This is another milestone for us to express our own unique sound and perspective in the context of metal music. We both have been busy with other projects, which explains the 2-year gap between Survival Mode and our self-titled EP. However, the drive to produce more music of our own has never disappeared during that time. We doubled down on the unique elements that set us apart. We also opted for a more straightforward sound with a mix that better reveals each instrument and voice. We think that this will express the power of those new songs more effectively.”

The overall theme of “Survival Mode” is about coping mechanisms, and the process of releasing this EP has been an exercise of survival for both Daniel Daris (Guitars, Bass) and Marie-Claude Fleury (Vocals, Oboe, English Horn, Drum Programming), who suffered losing loved ones during its recording. With “Survival Mode”, they aim to build real momentum and bring their atypical symphonic music to the live environment.

Before it officially releases, Disorientation has teamed up with Bravewords for the exclusive full-stream premiere of “Survival Mode” HERE.

“Survival Mode” is due out on December 1, 2023, and is available for pre-order at https://disorientationmetal.bandcamp.com.

About: Disorientation is a DIY Dark Experimental Metal band from Montreal, Canada, created by Marie-Claude Fleury and Daniel Daris. While other symphonic acts portray beauty, wonder, and grace, Disorientation takes you down a path of troubling disarray, crippling misery, and severe anguish you can’t escape from.

The idea of the band had been floating around for a few years, with song fragments written here and there but it was at the beginning of 2020 that Marie-Claude and Dan really got serious and started establishing the foundation of their unpolished sound driven by oboe orchestral passages and vocals that are harsh, vulnerable and everything in between.

Disorientation strives to combine the abrasiveness of old death/thrash metal with the orchestral elements introduced by European bands in the late 90s/early 00s to create depressive music with simple riffs that go for emotion rather than technique. The band avoids predetermined chord progressions, verse-chorus-verse-chorus structures, and clean/distorted vocal dichotomies to create disconcerting, dissonant, and memorable songs.

On September 26th, 2021, Disorientation released their first 3-track EP. In spite of minimal promotion, Disorientation’s unique sound and approach were noticed. Metal Trenches called it “a perfect band name and title for this self-titled EP” while Turkey’s Metalperver wrote that it was “Interesting music, worth checking out.” The songs got airplay on Dark Metal Radio, Sewer Spewer, The Autopsy Report, No Name Radio, and Mtl Métal.

“Survival Mode” is the band’s second EP due out in December 2023. Those 3 new songs feature even more of the elements that set them apart: unorthodox vocal lines, odd structures, dissonant oboe arrangements, in-your-face discomfort, and distress. With this offering, Marie-Claude and Daniel intend to keep their momentum. They are currently assembling a lineup with the goal of playing Disorientation’s music live.

“Moving away from the raw quality of the recording of their self titled debut EP with “Survival Mode” while Disorientation claim to have created something more straightforward this time around, that’s not the impression that we get. The Avant-garde duo instead go deeper down the rabbit hole and continue their perpetual forward motion with a ferocious and spine chilling trio of cuts that once again disorientate and disturb. Opening cut “Dissociation” once again finds the oboe effectively replacing the lead guitar and adding ominous and sinister melodies to contrast against the fierce unclean vocals from Fleury. The stunning choral vocals from the first record are maintained with guest musicians Maude Théberge and Pascal Germain-Berardi forming a classical choir and there is no question that the straight jackets are awaiting Disorientation alongside a trip to Arkham Asylum. The near eight minute opening cut has more twists and turns than a page turning dime store psycolocal horror novel and is exactly what the edge of the seat was made for. 8.5/10” – Metal Noise

Avant-garde Metal Duo DISORIENTATION Enter “Survival Mode” With New EP Out Dec 2023

Unveil First Single “Dissociation”

Montreal, Canada’s avant-garde metal duo Disorientation returns with their sophomore EP “Survival Mode” to follow their 2021 self-titled debut. A more blunt and straightforward record than its predecessor, the 16-minute, 3-track EP bends extreme metal, noise, and hardcore influences at its will pushing the envelope with unorthodox vocal lines, odd structures, and dissonant oboe and English Horn arrangements to create a strong emotional reaction to reflect tactics for psychological survival in unpleasant situations.

“This new EP has more of a harder edge compared to our 1st effort. We opted for a more straightforward sound with a mix that better reveals each instrument and voice that Hugues Deslauriers (Roarrr Sound Studio) magnificently mixed and mastered. Those who already like the band will enjoy it. People new to the band will either like or hate it, or at the least, it will leave them confused. It aims to create tension in the listeners, putting them ill at ease and make them question and wonder what is going on.” adds the band.

As another milestone for the duo to express their own unique sound and perspective in the context of metal music, “Survival Mode” speaks about coping mechanisms, and the process of releasing this EP has been an exercise of survival for both of them who suffered losing loved ones during recording. Also with “Survival Mode”, Disorientation aims to build real momentum and bring their atypical symphonic music to the live environment.

To introduce fans to the forthcoming record, Disorientation is unveiling the opening track “Dissociation” accompanied by a music video. The musical extremes from this song reflect the coexistence of harshness and vulnerability that dissociation can create between oneself and surroundings.

The band comments on the track:

“As soon as we started writing Dissociation, we knew this was the ideal opener for the EP. Contrary to the opening song Break Down from our previous effort, Dissociation does not waste any time and starts moving right from the start. It was the ideal song to showcase first because it encompasses the wide range of musical and style elements that make up the Disorientation sound.

Watch and listen to the video for “Dissociation” via its premiere on IDIOTEQ HERE.

“Survival Mode” is due out on December 1, 2023, and is available for pre-order at https://disorientationmetal.bandcamp.com.

“It sounds all over the place… a very avant-garde vibe to it … It almost feels improvised, it’s like slam poetry but with black metal oboe. This is definitely not going to be for everyone, but I love that weird, kind of obscure random stuff. This is all over the place, it feels improvised, I kind of like it like that, this is Disorientation, which is a perfect band name and title for this self-titled EP.” – Metal Trenches (2021 – Disorientation – EP)

“Canadian band Disorientation produces interesting music. Black/death metal ties with folk instruments and synths. The song Nature, in which the band decorated with plug-ins and acoustic passages and also used choir vocals, caught my attention. They released a three-track self-titled EP; It’s worth taking a look.” – Metal Perver (2021 – Disorientation – EP)

“… a little do-it-yourself project of dark low-fi symphonic metal with a little depressed folkloric side … it’s a pretty interesting little 3-piece EP … the album cover is also magnificent.” – Mtl Metal – CIBL 101.5 FM

EPK – Disorientation – Survival Mode (2023)

Publicist – Jon Asher – jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

EP Title: Survival Mode
Release Date: December 1st, 2023
Label: Self-Release

“This new EP has more of a harder edge compared to our 1st effort, this required a change of sound and we opted for the crisper approach provided by the mixing and mastering of Hugues Deslauriers. Those who already like the band will enjoy it. People new to the band will either like or hate it, or at the least, it will leave them confused. It aims to create tension in the listeners, putting them ill at ease and make them question and wonder what is going on.” – Disorientation

About The Album Artwork

It’s a metaphor for all you do, even if it’s considered unacceptable, to be able to deal with the hurt and to keep going in spite of it.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

Survival Mode is more blunt and straightforward than our self-titled EP. It’s about tactics for psychological survival in unpleasant situations.

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY)

1 – Dissociation – This song starts with a fury. The oboes and voice can’t stay pretty when it’s time to express the detachment from yourself and your circumstances. The fast riff keeps the confrontation going, but keeping a hard stance to face the pain is a draining process. The ternary passage that follows shows that slow disintegration, which will lead you to a chamber oboe passage where the real frailty is exposed. A moment of doomy misery follows. The tempo picks up a bit, just like the process of getting back up slowly after a hard hit, and then the song goes back to the start, to shutting down and forcing yourself into amnesia. The forgetfulness can’t be permanent though, and the soft outro reminds you that pain remains.

2 – Jaded – A cyclical song with a slower tempo. Vocals start clean in technique but not in intent, followed by a dissonant oboe choral that will make you physically uncomfortable. The tempo picks up a bit. There are starts and stops, just like the process of building an insensitivity to feelings, and then the music goes back to the start, moody and changing, leading to a burst of craziness where the vocals and underlying music go in all directions. The song ends in resignation, the deadening of emotions is complete, with the voice dying down at the end.

3 – Dark Side – A soft English horn intro will make you believe that not all is entirely gloomy and hopeless. The contrasting fast and straightforward riff that follows and stays constant until the end will remind you otherwise. An in-your-face hardcore-style approach to vocals makes a harsh statement about those who worry about your well-being: why do they care? Honestly? Short and sweet, this one ends abruptly with a bang.

Fun Facts – Story Angles:

1. Dan’s 1st show ever was playing in a black/death metal band at a fast-food restaurant. There were 4 people in attendance, Marie-Claude was amongst them.

2. Our recordings are done in our own rehearsal space with no regard to whether or not the equipment we use is considered trendy. Our recording laptop is terribly outdated, we use one of the cheapest guitars, in a tiny practice amp. Same thing for the bass. All with entry-level mikes.

3. More fun facts to come as the band evolves and starts playing live… (I guess)
