EPK – Devolver – New Blood (2023) (single)

Publicist – Jon[@]ashermediarelations[.]com

For fans of In Flames, At The Gates, Soilwork, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God

Band Title: Devolver
Single Title: New Blood
Release Date: November 24, 2023
Label: Self-Release
Distribution: Symphonic
Single Length: 3:14

“This single (and album) are going to turn some heads and call back to late 90’s/00’s melodic death metal and metalcore while looking forward with a razor-sharp sound. We think people will find it to be a breath of fresh air, that still reminds them of their favourite bands. We think it will be exciting for any metal fans that hear it. We think we cover a lot of ground with our sound and will be appreciated by old-school metalheads, and younger fans of modern metalcore alike.” – Devolver

“Devolver uses melodies, intensity, and a variety of vocalists to hook you, reeling you from song to song making this such a welcoming and comfortable listen. I don’t mean they’re “easy listening,” there heavy as f***, I mean there’s always something different, you’ll never get bored while diving into this debut.” – Vulture Hound

“If After The Burial and The Ghost Inside had a lovechild, it would be Devolver. These guys blew me away with how professional, well written, and how well structured they’ve presented themselves with their SelfTitled record. Each song has its own personality, while still maintaining a signature sound. The breakdowns are simple, yet effective in each song. There is dynamic tension and then well-needed release throughout the record, and it’s downright masterful. This album is captivating, and I recommend anyone that is a fan of metal to check this out.” – Bucketlist Music Reviews

========================================================

About The Track:

New Blood was an amalgamation of riffs written in a single sitting whilst Devin was sitting on a staircase bullshitting with Bevin. It was quickly developed into a skeleton structure at which point Bevin wrote drums for the song. After a tweak to the chorus the song was finished until lyrics were added and a solo was added after the first chorus per Mark Lewis’ suggestion. This song doesn’t sit down at all and goes right until it ends. With chugging riffs, interesting melodies, ripping solos and a catchy yet memorable chorus, we feel “New Blood” is putting our best foot forward.

========================================================

Fun Facts – Story Angles:

1. For the New Blood video we just wanted to do something fun. We’re really just a bunch of idiots so we didn’t want this video to be too serious

2. We had someone actually make the Guitar Hero charts for New Blood and Jewels Of The Maw, so if you play Clone Hero on PC you can download and play our songs!

3. When we decided to work with Mark, we were scheduled to begin recording in March 2020. Obviously, the Covid-19 pandemic changed our plans. We decided to stick it out and wait til we could record with Mark. He was our top choice and we knew if we worked with him we could get the album we wanted without compromise.

4. After years of waiting we finally began recording in July 2022. We flew Mark in to record with us at our home studio and hosted him at our guitarist and drummer’s house for a few weeks. He left after guitars and came back for a few more weeks to do bass and vocals. Then our guitarist and drummer flew to his studio in Nashville to record drums and guitar solos.

5. We had the opportunity to play Loud As Hell in 2022 between Mark’s trips to record, and it was an absolute blast to play such an esteemed festival

L-R – Jayde Penner (Rhythm Guitar), Jaylen Elias (Bass), Chris Brown (Vocals), Bevin Booth (Drums), Devin Babcock (Lead Guitar)

Hailing from Grande Prairie, Canada, Devolver’s particular brand of metal can be described as “Gothenburg worship meets NWOAHM”. Formed by guitarist Devin Babcock and drummer/producer Bevin Booth, and later rounded out by guitarist Jayde Penner, vocalist Chris Brown, and bassist Jaylen Elias, Devolver blends groovy metalcore and melodic death metal, creating a unique sound that appeals to fans of modern metal genres while embracing their old school influences, wearing them on their sleeve. With their heavy-hitting new album in tow, and fueled by a passion that can only be understood by seeing their unbridled live performance, they are ready to make waves in Canadian and international metal scenes alike. The first look at their forthcoming sophomore album is the singles “New Blood” and “Jewels of the Maw” produced by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide, Devildriver, Whitechapel).

“We’re so stoked to finally be releasing Jewels of the Maw! This single will eventually be on the album we recorded with Mark Lewis. He really motivated us to push the envelope and make a really strong body of work. I think we’ve come out with something pretty special that showcases our sound in a way that people will really be able to sink their teeth into. This song is us making the music that WE want to hear, built on the foundation of all our influences that made us want to do this in the first place. ========================================================

About The Track:

Musically, it comes in very hot with a scream and straight into an upbeat riff. As we move into the next section it picks up with the verse, which bring up memories of old In Flames. With a quick dazzle of technical riffage it brings us into the big melodic chorus, still keeping the screams at the forefront but guided by background clean vocals to add size and depth to this section. We repeat a few parts… Before reaching the bridge/solo section. This really breaks the song apart with a descending riff that breaks melodic norms and pulls the listener in a new direction for a while, laying out a new lyrical them and finally saying the name of the sing in the lyrics. Then we’re pulled back up to speed with a quick outro based on the verse to close out the track.

With their heavy-hitting new album in tow, fully produced, mixed, and mastered by all-star metal producer Mark Lewis (Megadeth, Trivium, DevilDriver, Whitechapel, etc), and fueled by a passion that can only be understood by seeing their unbridled live performance, they are ready to make waves in Canadian and international metal scenes alike. They have played a host of praise-worthy shows in their home province of Alberta as well as B.C. since their inception, including an opening set for Protest The Hero and a spot in the legendary Loud As Hell Festival in southern Alberta. With influences that range from At The Gates and Children Of Bodom, to Pantera and Whitechapel, Devolver has a unique identity that bridges the gap between the old-school melodic death metal that dominated the 90’s and 00’s, and the new school of tight, relentless metalcore we see thriving today. While it can be hard to pin down their sound, this blend of grooves and infectious hooks has managed to find them a rapidly growing fanbase across a wide swath of the metal community. Their ability to shift fluidly among these styles, coupled with their signature brand of live entertainment, makes it easy to see why they’re on a path to success. With the help of a newfound friend and collaborator Mark Lewis, they will be shopping and showcasing their new full-length album to some of the highest esteemed metal record labels around the world, with the confidence that they’ll succeed in finding a home for their album. Not ones to sit idly by while the cogs of the machine begin to turn, Devolver is stepping up to the plate and putting together a string of shows to keep themselves busy for the rest of the year, continuing to spread their melodic grooves as wide an audience as possible.

DEVOLVER Takes A New Look At Melodic Death Metal With Single “Jewels of the Maw”

+ Western Canadian Tour Tour Dates (AB, BC) w/ Widow’s Peak, Snakepit

The first look at their forthcoming album is the single “Jewels of the Maw” produced by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide, Devildriver, Whitechapel). The track was also heavily inspired by the novel Bluebeard by Kurt Vonnegut. The band gives some insight into the song:

“Musically, it comes in very hot with a scream and straight into an upbeat riff. As we move into the next section it picks up with the verse, which brings up memories of old In Flames. This single will eventually be on the album we recorded with Mark Lewis. He really motivated us to push the envelope and make a really strong body of work. This song is us making the music that WE want to hear, built on the foundation of all our influences that made us want to do this in the first place.”

Devolver’s lyrics come from many different places. Much of it comes across as calamitous and devastating. The novel this song takes inspiration from covers topics of the creation and value of art, what art means to us, striving to be the most honest version of yourself, and tying into themes of desperation, survival, and genocide.

According to the band, this single is going to turn some heads and call back to late 90’s/ 00’s melodic death metal and metalcore, while looking forward with a razor-sharp sound. They hope people will find it to be a breath of fresh air, that still reminds them of their favourite bands. It is recommended for fans of In Flames, At The Gates, and Soilwork.

Hailing from Grand Prairie Alberta, DEVOLVER were formed by Devin Babcock and Bevin Booth in 2015. Inspired by Soilwork, Whitechapel, Gojira, At The Gates and In Flames, DEVOLVER describe their music as “melodic, groovy, fast, progressive, explosive!”.

As drummer Bevin Booth explains there is an irony in their name.

“The definition of Devolver is essentially moving backwards. However our music is what we strive to keep moving forward so the name is a bit sarcastic when viewed like that. The name was chosen by Devin after he was let go from a previous band and felt that set him back in terms of work he had dedicated. The name also plays off of Devin’s name as he originally founded Devolver while still in his previous band as a side project.”

Unleashing their self-titled debut album in 2015, the release was an eight track deliverance of “melodies, intensity, and a variety of vocalists to hook you, reeling you from song to song making this such a welcoming and comfortable listen...there’s always something different, you’ll never get bored while diving into this debut.” as described by Vulture Hound Mag. The album has been a stepping stone for DEVOLVER to grow and become a much talked about band on the Alberta metal scene along with performing with bands such as Protest The Hero, Protosequence, Windy City Slaughter and more.

DEVOLVER’s legions of fans have a growing hunger to feed their appetite and rather than devolving, the five piece are constantly evolving and will be unleashing a new single “A Life Lost’ in 2017.

“This new single will be a natural follow-up. It should also further the point that Devolver’s music will always move forward and progress from release-to-release!” adds Booth. “The experience we want to give fans of Devolver is one of anticipation, surprise and excitement with each release. Devolver is not one to release the same content over and over, and we want our fans to be aware of that with each release…Devolver’s sound will always move forward. Our debut album’s track listing varies within itself and there are no repeat offenders.”

Live, Devolver aim to slay! They are tight, energetic, and fun. They always strive to play the best show that they are physically capable of, whether it’s for ten or a hundred people, they live to involve the crowd as it makes the show super special for everyone involved. Plans for touring across Western Canada in 2017 and 2018 are in the works along with more music.

DEVOLVER’s self-titled debut album is available on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify.
