As self released debut albums go, you can’t really top this, I cannot think of anything close to as good, I struggle to think of many debut albums in the past decade even with a budget of a label behind them sounded as good a sound as Woodhawk. If you are a fan of bands like Priestess, Red Fang, Truck fighters and so on, then these guys genuinely are a must for you to check out.

Reminder – Kicking Off This Week – Tour Dates (BC/AB/SK/MB) WOODHAWK “Vagabonds of The Western Gig Tour”

Riff-tastic Debut LP “Beyond The Sun” Out Now!

New Video “The High Priest”

Calgary’ AB’s masters of straight ahead riff-rock wizardry WOODHAWK will be hitting the road this May across four provinces (BC/AB/SK/MB) in support of their full length album ‘Beyond The Sun’ released this past April. The album was produced by the band with Jesse Gander (Bison, Japandroids) to follow their 2014 debut EP.  Made of equal parts 1970’s Birmingham and a myriad of 21st century heavy who’s who, WOODHAWK are purveyors of riff-centric rock and roll. Capable and original, the band is able to craft anthemic fist-pumping songs while forgoing tired stoner rock clichés. With time travel tested themes of science fiction, swords and sorcery, the band’s lyrics are born from snowy winters, hot practice spaces and pages of dog-eared paperbacks. While the musicianship reinforces recollections of Black Sabbath, modern influences that have helped you smash air drums or highway speed limits are undeniably present.

‘Beyond The Sun’ album stream available on Bandcamp at https://woodhawk.bandcamp.com.

The album is available on digital, vinyl and CD.

The band’s music video ‘The High Priest’ can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5g5jTKtEfM

“Beyond the Sun is incredibly infectious and memorable and right from the get go, you know that you are in for a ride. Even if for whatever reason you are in a bad mood, this record will straighten that out in a hurry as it has you nodding your head and belting the lyrics out with the vocalist in no time….a release that is easy to listen to and get into but isn’t easy to put down by any means. Once you begin listening you have a hard time tearing yourself away from your speakers.” – Cadaver Garden

“Woodhawk have a new album – Beyond The Sun – and it’s one that ticks all right boxes if you’re a serious fan of Stoner Rock. Taking influence from bands such as Kyuss, The Sword and Truckfighters. Woodhawk offer a refreshing style of Psych Stoner Metal with moments of Fuzz and Desert Rock that add extra grit to their music.” – Outlaws of The Sun

“The whole album put me in a good mood. Although I am a fan of a more distorted and fuzz-y sounding stoner rock, this was a great cleaned up take…The killer trio band have really created their own rules. One of which is trying to throw out stoner rock stereotypes. And it’s working brilliantly for them. Beyond the Sun is exactly what one would expect from Woodhawk. Riffs and riffs and riffs and high energy drums and more riffs…Moral of the story: this is the perfect CD to pop on when you feel like dancing in your underwear while cleaning your room. I would recommend “Beyond the Sun” to anyone who would like a less distorted version of Red Fang. Which is definitely a compliment, for the record.” – Bangs!

“As I was walking into the venue, I began hurrying up the stairs as their sound captured my attention right away and was quickly swept up into their thick pulse thumping guitars and huge powerhouse drum sound.” – Vancity Buzz
“Calgarian riff-riders Woodhawk kicked off the proceedings, hitting all the gritty notes with their raucous roadhouse metal. Propane and Jack flowed freely as the golden western trio woke all them witches with their thematic rock fury.” – Beatroute Magazine

“You see, “Sacrificium” is so blindingly fast and so technically jaw-dropping that attempting to provide even a rough linguistic map of its course is a fool’s errand. It’s a truly breathtaking rocket ride, a non-stop jolt of adrenaline, so blazing in its exuberance that trying to nail it down with words seems unjust, even if that could be done.” – No Clean Singing

“Toronto’s Deity deliver chaotic, aggressive and masterful self titled debut album.” – The Sludgelord

“This is one of the better Death Metal debuts I’ve heard in recent memory—the musicianship is so cunning, so well-crafted in their identity they are, that I see good things for this band in the future.” – Metal Temple

“High-intensity riffing, bladder-loosening drumming & hyper-aggressive vocals, Deity is one constant, nerve shredding assault.” – Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life

“This is a great death metal album, that’s all all the stuff you look for into that genre…If you are a fan of Death, Emperor or Suffocation you have to check it out. Great job from the Toronto duo, of Deity, can’t wait to hear what’s next” – Re Zine

“This is a well thought out, impressive and interesting album, and for a debut it’s positively spectacular.” – Archaic Triad

“If you’re a fan of any heavy music, and if you crave fast drums and even heavier vocals, definitely check out the self-titled album today. I guarantee you’ll be rocking out to this album for awhile.” – Canadian Beats

” A series of highly versatile and heavy tracks that manage to justify their lengths and make it look easy.  Pick the album up today and watch for these guys live in the near future.” – Metal Trenches

“One the whole Deity more than do their moniker justice… Lyrically too, Deity are a step above any metal clichés… in terms of songs, skills, and sheer love of their music, Deity are an outstanding band who deserve a wide audience for their music.” – Hellbound

L-R – John Massey – Vocals/Guitars, Danny Alessandro – Vocals/Guitars

The Cambridge English Dictionary defines Deity as ‘Godhead; the Supreme Being; a fabulous god or goddess; a divinity.’  That definition needs to be amended to include DEITY the band; who meld old-school metal through a thoroughly unique intense influence of their own into music that is godlike and divine!

The brainchild of Danny Alessandro (guitars/vocals) and John Massey (guitars/vocals), DEITY has been a long time coming as Danny explains.

“We formed about 15 years ago…Myself and John have always been the core of Deity. We had both been working on other projects till we felt the need to finally go in and finish this album about 3 years ago. We’ve known each other for about 20 years! We got tired of working on metal that wasn’t true to us. This is an album we’ve always wanted to hear!”

Inspired by Suffocation, Emperor, Death, Slayer and Immortal and describing their music as ‘relentless, powerful, intriguing, honest and revitalizing’, DEITY has produced a truly special debut album combining the fantastic progressive instrumentals of Metallica and Iced Earth with crushing metal anthems.

Featuring eight brutal assaults, the debut album includes session drums done by Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) and session bass by Flo Ravet (ex-Nephelium) along with mixing and mastering done by Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist) plus produced by Danny Alessandro with Joey Virgilio.

One of the many things that give DEITY their own special identity is their lyrical inspirations, for instance ‘Sacrificium’, which is about people who treat you badly and then try to turn the blame on you, as Danny memorably says, “the kind of people who wouldn’t have the guts to confront you face-to-face.” Or ‘In Turmoil’, which is about “breaking your back slaving away for people who are undeserving. People who think they are entitled for no apparent reason.”

With the completion of DEITY’s album, the extreme duo, Danny and John are looking forward to taking their sound to live stages in Toronto, Montreal and more in both those cities provinces and beyond. Watch this pair, because DEITY are a band that deserve to break out of the studio into the live arena!

‘II: Vanishing’ has been self-released, but I can’t imagine that Longhouse will be without a record label much longer. This is a real quality release and if Longhouse keeps up this level, an invitation for Roadburn should be coming their way sooner rather than later.

…their technical metal, with a lot of a-rhythmic patterns and mega-intensive guitar work, is very hard to find…an open, complex and adventurous album and is definitely a recommendation.

http://theprogressiveaspect.net/blog/2017/05/01/omnisight-the-power-of-one/

the album has an overall classic ’80s/’90s sound that is melodic with big hooks and technical guitar solos…an excellent album. The music is technical without losing its groove.
