Howling Giant may be passed over to you as a stoner rock band or something of the ilk, but they’re far too experimental and avant garde in nature to be narrowed into a small definitive genre. Their first album in the Black Hole Space Wizard chronology was some of the heaviest and most enchanting music I heard last year. Well they’re back for Part II.
Fuzz. Acid. Rock. Space. Doom. Stoner. Post-Post-Post Hawkwind. I don’t care what you call it, this album is so mood lifting. Props to them for following up on the first chapter with an awesome force of astral boogie.

NEWS RELEASE

Montreal, QC – September 2017

For Fans of Black Sabbath, The Sword, Clutch, Truckfighters, Priestess, Mastodon, Red Fang, Thin Lizzy

REMINDER – KICKING OFF THIS WEEK – Sept 3 – Oct 7 – WOODHAWK “Strikes Back Tour” (AB/SK/BC)

Riff-tastic Debut LP “Beyond The Sun” Out Now!

New Video “The High Priest”

Calgary’ AB’s masters of straight ahead riff-rock wizardry WOODHAWK will be hitting the road this September for their second Western Canadian tour (AB/SK/BC) (dates listed below) in support of their full length album ‘Beyond The Sun’ released this past April. The album was produced by the band with Jesse Gander (Bison, Japandroids) to follow their 2014 debut EP.  Made of equal parts 1970’s Birmingham and a myriad of 21st century heavy who’s who, WOODHAWK are purveyors of riff-centric rock and roll. Capable and original, the band is able to craft anthemic fist-pumping songs while forgoing tired stoner rock clichés. With time travel tested themes of science fiction, swords and sorcery, the band’s lyrics are born from snowy winters, hot practice spaces and pages of dog-eared paperbacks. While the musicianship reinforces recollections of Black Sabbath, modern influences that have helped you smash air drums or highway speed limits are undeniably present.

The band comments:

“This tour sees us wrapping up our Western Canada touring in support of Beyond The Sun. Western Canada is so good to us. A New Hope seemed to be a lot of people’s favourite song off the album, so we thought it would be funny to pull another Star Wars reference out, with naming the tour Woodhawk Strikes Back.”

‘Beyond The Sun’ album stream available on Bandcamp at https://woodhawk.bandcamp.com.

The album is available on digital, vinyl and CD.

The band’s music video ‘The High Priest’ can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5g5jTKtEfM

“Beyond the Sun is incredibly infectious and memorable and right from the get go, you know that you are in for a ride. Even if for whatever reason you are in a bad mood, this record will straighten that out in a hurry as it has you nodding your head and belting the lyrics out with the vocalist in no time….a release that is easy to listen to and get into but isn’t easy to put down by any means. Once you begin listening you have a hard time tearing yourself away from your speakers.” – Cadaver Garden

““Beyond The Sun, is overflowing with everything one could want from a great stoner rock record, thick, rumbling bass tones, sizzling guitar fuzz and infectious, mid tempo riffage, making this the kind of album that is very hard to stop listening to” – The Sludgelord

“Woodhawk have a new album – Beyond The Sun – and it’s one that ticks all right boxes if you’re a serious fan of Stoner Rock. Taking influence from bands such as Kyuss, The Sword and Truckfighters. Woodhawk offer a refreshing style of Psych Stoner Metal with moments of Fuzz and Desert Rock that add extra grit to their music.” – Outlaws of The Sun

“The whole album put me in a good mood. Although I am a fan of a more distorted and fuzz-y sounding stoner rock, this was a great cleaned up take…The killer trio band have really created their own rules. One of which is trying to throw out stoner rock stereotypes. And it’s working brilliantly for them. Beyond the Sun is exactly what one would expect from Woodhawk. Riffs and riffs and riffs and high energy drums and more riffs…Moral of the story: this is the perfect CD to pop on when you feel like dancing in your underwear while cleaning your room. I would recommend “Beyond the Sun” to anyone who would like a less distorted version of Red Fang. Which is definitely a compliment, for the record.” – Bangs!

“As I was walking into the venue, I began hurrying up the stairs as their sound captured my attention right away and was quickly swept up into their thick pulse thumping guitars and huge powerhouse drum sound.” – Vancity Buzz

“Calgarian riff-riders Woodhawk kicked off the proceedings, hitting all the gritty notes with their raucous roadhouse metal. Propane and Jack flowed freely as the golden western trio woke all them witches with their thematic rock fury.” – Beatroute Magazine

Montreal, QC – September 1, 2017

New Noise Mag Premiere EMPTY THREAT New Single “Heliophobia” + New EP “Shutdown Nowhere” Out Oct 6th

Fusing punk, post-grunge, and prog rock, Mississauga, ON’s EMPTY THREAT are an alternative band making noise in Ontario and Quebec playing shows routinely in Toronto, London, Montreal and more. Formed in 2011 by bassist Ryan Dobson and guitarist/singer Michael Roane, the duo acquired drummer David Jameson in 2014 and soon after they recruited second guitarist Matthew Roane to solidify their line up in 2015.

Wasting no time, the quartet is now planning the release of their debut EP entitled “Shutdown Nowhere” due out October 6, 2017. Teaming up with award winning producer/engineer/mixer Glen Robinson who is known for his work with such names as The Ramones, AC/DC, GWAR, Annihilator and Voivod, the EP is their first professionally recorded release.

Vocalist / guitarist Michael Roane comments:

“We are a young band, developing our style and pushing forward to provide a new sound experience. Most of the songs we have been working on for years – and have been through multiple edits and versions. This will be our first, legitimate attempt to introduce ourselves to the world – so we hope that fans will hear our songs and feel a slight familiarity to the genre, but will appreciate the unique touch we put in our songs – as we combine elements from multiple genres and use our effects to put a different perspective on old ideas. We also want people to know first and foremost our band is about creating passionate music that may resonate with other people. On the surface, we make music that has a carefully crafted intensity – like a chained beast tugging at the leash. For those who want to dig deeper, they see how this sound represents us, as people, and our struggles to reach our potential. We connect with our fans through these shared emotions.”

The forthcoming “Shutdown Nowhere” EP will feature six new crushing tracks full of introspective verse.

Roane adds “We aim to introduce ourselves by having a “new familiarity” feel to our songs. Veterans of rock and metal should be comfortable listening to our songs, but we aim to blend in elements that will surprise them.”

Teaming up with New Noise Magazine, the band is premiering their second single “Heliophobia” off the EP.

The band comments:

“The song tells the tale of a girl pushed to the edge by the torment from those around her. Ridiculed for her imperfections, she learns to hate everyone around her and becomes resentful towards herself for what she has become. However, if either party had simply taken the higher road and stepped above the hate – none of this would have happened. “Heliophobia” refers to how people are afraid to seek the truth and light. They either shelter themselves away to ridicule or degrade others, or corrupt truths to use as a weapon. Sonically, this song is fast, tight, and punky. The music races and pauses only briefly to reflect upon the state the world is left in.”

Live, EMPTY THREAT delivers a very high-energy and engaging show where they often improvise extended bridges and endings to songs to hype the crowd more. They take the negativity and loathing present in their songs and ramp up the energy to a powerful force that is a memorable moment that their fans can walk away with.

“Combining symphonic, atmospheric and pummeling elements of black metal history, the band conjures an impressive battle cry that any grim fan can easily connect with.” – Metal Injection

“Sar Isatum is Sumerian, meaning “King of Fire”, and they even incorporate lyrical themes therefrom. Combined with their own majestic vistas of the Rocky Mountains, the combination makes for mighty sweepingly soaring black metal.” – No Clean Singing

“Sar Isatum are not messing about…Great symphonic black does not find its way onto my radar as often as it should these days but the ritualistic drumming leading into a blistering, well produced assault of technical obsidian majesty felt like a clarion-call charge into battle and served well as a savage statement of intent.” – Black Metal Daily

“The trio, JP Dalkhu, Damothi and CC conjure up a pretty tight sound, precisely delivered drum work, brutal, technical blackened riffing, a crushingly dark underlying groove, slick direction switching and an acerbic vocal delivery, what’s not to like!” – Metal Talk

“Two things always contribute to creating epic original black metal. One is location, and by being based in Colorado, the Rocky Mountains provide the ideal canvas for technical symphonic black metal band SAR ISATUM to sweep broad musical brush strokes across a vast vista, musically, mentally, and physically.” The Grim Reader

“the band has assembled a collection of gripping songs with good variation on their 35-minute debut” – Gorger’s Metal

Two things always contribute to creating epic original black metal…

One is location, and by being based in Colorado, the Rocky Mountains provide the ideal canvas for technical symphonic black metal band Sar Isatum to sweep broad musical brush strokes across a vast vista, musically, mentally, and physically.

The second is lyrical inspiration. Sar Isatum eschew all the usual flogged- to-death lyrical clichés of black metal to take inspiration from a variety of sources. The very name Sar Isatum comes from the Sumerian dialect. It means ‘King of Fire.’ Indeed, both the Sumerian and Annunaki empires provide strong lyrical inspiration.

Inspired by Emperor, Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, Sothis and Craft, band member J.P Dalkhu describes Sar Isatum’s music as “ethereal, nefarious, repugnant, abhorrent, cryptic.”

Sar Isatum have high expectations of their upcoming debut album, but at the same time, Sar Isatum create music for themselves, not copying what has come before, but fans of various styles of black metal will find much to appreciate here. As Dalkhu so lyrically says Sar Isatum create “a variation of extreme and atmospheric black metal as if one went through a burning battlefield and witnessed horrid devastation.” Dalkhu feels that this is the best band its members have ever been a part of and are constantly evolving as musicians.

Lyrically, Demothi of Sar Isatum very much ploughs his own furrow, creating songs that feel as though they have always existed, a part of the fabric of space and time. “Sar Isatum’s lyrics are inspired by native folklore, science fiction, historical events, extraterrestrial theory and the reimagining of biblical happenings from outside points- of- view.”

Live, Sar Isatum transcends even their own recorded music. “We are gonna get on stage and take it on like a battle in a war. Expect an intense live show from us, like a fire destroying everything in its path.”
