Streaming Now! Canadian Progressive Death SYMBIOTIC GROWTH’s New Album “Beyond The Sleepless Aether”

Mixed and Mastered by Tom Maclean (Haken, Athemon, Brutta)

Canadian progressive blackened death unit Symbiotic Growth unleashes their sophomore album “Beyond The Sleepless Aether,” now available as of March 28th, 2025. Similar to the band’s predecessor, their 2020 self-titled full-length, “Beyond The Sleepless Aether,” is once again based in fiction and is lyrically conceptual, but dives more into thoughts and emotions of everyday life, and sometimes those thoughts are hard to deal with.

“I feel like this time around, the sound is a bit darker and experimental, with more synth-heavy sounds and a melancholy atmosphere. The lyrics were very loosely inspired by a dream I (Aaron) had about the multiverse theory intertwined with some of my challenges of dealing with a sense of being and why we are all here,” says Aaron Barriault (Vocals, Guitar, Bass).

Progressive, experimental, foreboding, and emotional, every song has its own identity and its place within the album’s story, taking its protagonist through the multiverse, placing him in places like dark wooded forests, wide open desert landscapes, and the unending cosmos.

The full-length listening experience tackles strong topics of loneliness, a sense of being, self-hatred, and suicide. Some of these are blatant and easy to see, and others subtly, throughout the course of the album, lyrically and musically.

“I think the fans who have heard our previous album may be a bit surprised; the sound of this album is a bit different; it’s a little bit more experimental in its own way. Either way, we hope that fans enjoy what we’ve created. I feel like the listener may have feelings of uneasiness and wonder. An odd combination, but I feel like it’s fitting.

Mixed and mastered by Tom Maclean (Twelve Tone Studio, Haken, Athemon, Brutta), “Beyond The Sleepless Aether”, features seven paryalzing sounds of technical metal created by the Sudbury, ON recording line up of Aaron Barriault (Vocals, Guitar, Bass), Devin Mcqueen (Vocals, Guitar), and Dan Favot (Drums)(ex-Wolven Ancestry, ex-Fractal Generator). The artwork was created by Erskine Designs and shows an entity standing at the foot of what the band likes to think of as Azathoth.

“The album doesn’t touch on any Lovecraftian mythos (maybe a bit in The Sleepless Void), but the lore behind Azathoth, that we are all in his dream and once he wakes everything will cease to be, is very fitting to the album lyrically,” adds Barriault.

About:

Shores of Null stand out from their contemporaries with their ability to blend seemingly disparate elements into their sound, overwhelmingly heavy and soothing at the same time: blackened aggression stands alongside gothic-doom sections without either sounding out of place. Their music can be both melancholic yet majestic, made of chorale-like guitar textures across the instrument’s entire range, sustained by a powerful rhythmic section and punctuated by a refined mixture of clean and growled vocals, along with extensive use of pleasing vocal harmonies which have become the band’s trademark through the years.

The Rome-based metal band has been an unwavering presence within the metal underground since their musical outset in 2013, churning out a series of impressive records: the melodic and somber “Quiescence” (Candlelight, 2014), the darker and more complex “Black Drapes For Tomorrow” (Candlelight/Spinefarm, 2017), and the ambitious “Beyond The Shores (On Death And Dying)” (Spikerot Records, 2020), a 38-minute long doom manifesto that sees guest appearances of the doom-titans Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow The Sun) and Thomas A.G. Jensen (Saturnus), along with the angelic voice of Elisabetta Marchetti (Inno).

Shores Of Null’s fourth album, “The Loss Of Beauty”, released in March 2023, was hailed as one of the best albums of the year within the genre. The band supported the release with an extensive EU/UK tour alongside Swallow The Sun, Draconian, and Avatarium, followed by standout performances at major festivals like Hellfest, Rock Imperium, and 70000 Tons Of Metal among others, further solidifying their status as one of the rising forces in the metal scene.

“Beyond The Sleepless Aether plays with a lot of known elements and turns them into something unknown. That you can take so many recognizable pieces and transform them into something truly all your own is an incredible work. Symbiotic Growth have tackled a rare challenge to make an hour-plus worth of music and make it seem as if it is one continuous tale, resulting in something truly intricate and immense. These are big songs that could be treated as separate journeys, but if there’s a chance to take Beyond The Sleepless Aether as one go, the full, finite experience is one that should not be passed up. Don’t let Symbiotic Growth‘s second album fly under your radar; Beyond The Sleepless Aether is a release well worth all the time it asks from listeners.” – No Clean Singing

“Beyond the Sleepless Aether shows Symbiotic Growth’s burgeoning talent and signals the group is one to watch in progressive death metal.” – Angry Metal Guy

“Beyond The Sleepless Aether is heavy as a herd of elephants wearing armour, jumping up and down on your head for the rest of time. It is utterly relentless, yet interspersed with moments of such musical beauty that your soul will ache to the point of breaking. I cannot praise this album highly enough as it is fucking perfect in every single way, and if you have ever taken anything I have ever written to heart then know this. You… yes, you reading this… you need this fucking album in your life in the way that you need breathing. 5/5” – Black Metal Archive

“There are an immense number of individual components that deserve special attention on “Beyond The Sleepless Aether. The rhythm work is exemplary, the stubborn use of background keys in the context of a mostly dissonant sound sets standards, the vocals are one of the absolute pieces of jewelry anyway, and what is ultimately ignited in the lead guitars is no longer from this world: soulful playing, virtuoso descents, crunchy sawing. Everything that could contribute to the mutual mood is really taken into account here, of course also at a technically brilliant level. 10/10 ” PowerMetal.de

“From the off, the album integrates complexity without sacrificing memorability, and it has a really strong ear for melody in a variety of forms, all the while blasting away and unleashing hellish vocals… this record (Beyond The Sleepless Aether) is a delight to listen to, and an early contender in what is traditionally one of the most competitive metal niches out there.” – Metal Storm

“Canada’s Symbiotic Growth came in clutch with their fantastic new record Beyond the Sleepless Aether. Enslaved are an immediate touchstone—so much so that I’m sure the main riff to “Spires Of The Boundless Sunset” sounds like a specific latter-day song of theirs that i can’t quite place. As the album develops, however, Ne Obliviscaris become a more obvious point of comparison, with the songs expanding into ever more extravagant and elongated arrangements as the album goes on. As with NeO, the longer, postier passages do drag on a bit, but there’s always a pummeling riff or cathartic melody waiting around the corner to bring the energy back up again, and the band is granted an extra tech-death tinge, thanks to the ferocious efforts drummer Dan Favot of Fractal Generator” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

“An hour-long voyage through alternate realities and the cosmos, Beyond The Sleepless Aether is a jawdropping odyssey of progressive death and black metal. The capacity for striking melody amidst furious intensity and structural complexity is reminiscent of the likes of An Abstract Illusion and Ne Obliviscaris, and the use of synths and electronics even more so of the former. However, Symbiotic Growth firmly demonstrate their own remarkable songwriting skills, with impeccable pacing and transitions across lengthy compositions that are filled with a surplus of memorable riffs and melodies, compelling atmospheres, and staggering virtuosity.” – Metal Storm

“Glimmers of brilliance, particularly in the epics and performances, shine through across the record, untouched by occasional patches of off cleans and songs that stick to their guns a little too tightly. As a result, Symbiotic Growth have made a fine record, and one that shows an incredible amount of maturity and growth from their debut. In just a few years, they’ve leveled themselves up a considerable amount, and perhaps the symbiotic relationship between this reviewer and these musicians will help their growth into something special.” – The Progressive Subway

“a solid and high quality example of extreme progressive metal that deserves attention” – Progressor

“Prog death, with a little atmosphere, a smidge of black metal, longer tracks, pretty complex and yeah brutal too.” – WORT 89.9 FM The Mosh Pit (Madison, WI)

“Canada is always that country that always gives us some unexpected gems of extreme music. Symbiotic Growth is the latest revelation. This debut album brings us a fantastic balance between the extreme aspect of death metal and progressive metal.” – World Of Metal Magazine

“Symbiotic Growth‘s songs are significant hybrids, but their incorporation of differing influences works very well because they’re such adept songwriters and skilled performers.” – No Clean Singing

About The Album Artwork:

The artwork shows a being standing at the foot of what we like to think of as Azathoth. Now the album dosent touch on any Lovecraftian mythos (maybe a bit in The Sleepless Void) but the lore behind Azathoth, that we are all in his dream and once he wakes everything will cease to be, is very fitting to the album lyrically.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

Like the last album, this one is once again based in fiction and is lyrically conceptual, but dives more into more thoughts and emotions of everyday life, and sometimes those thoughts are hard to deal with.

Every song has its own identity and its place within the story, taking our protagonist through the multiverse, placing him in places like dark wooded forests, wide open desert landscapes, and the unending cosmos.

As an album, the songs tackle strong feelings of loneliness, a sense of being, self-hatred, and suicide. Some of which are blatant and easy to see and others subtly through the course of the album, lyrically and musically.

Track By Track:

1. Of Painted Skies And Dancing Lights lyrically starts our journey with the protagonist of our story standing in the forest, staring up at the night sky, taking in the beauty that is the northern lights, and reflecting on life and what may be beyond it. All the while, the music helps to build the scenery sonically with a repetitive theme that keeps building into an eventual release that breaks into more intense passages that coincide with his reflection of life.

2. Spires Of The Boundless Sunset takes us to a different reality where he surprisingly finds himself upon an old church, abandoned long ago, where nature has started to reclaim its rightful place, wondering how he arrived at such a place, with everything feeling different but somehow the same. He then starts to see what’s happening and how he was transported there. The rhythmic pacing interweaved with the choir-like synth of the intro/verse riff builds on the wonder of the new environment that he’s arrived in. The rest of the song continues to build on that wonder and curiosity with more laid-back chordy parts, letting the bass parts do more of the heavy lifting melodically.

3. The Architect Of Annihilation lets more of Devin’s clean vocals shine by taking a more upfront approach in our techier track on the album. The riff-heavy song features a lot call and response type vocals between Aaron and Devin, giving more variety to an already well-versed song. As the longest song on the album, it has more of a story to tell lyrically, taking heavy inspiration from the movie Princess Mononoke. We find ourselves in a world where industry is taking over and destroying all of nature in its wake. He sees this all in what he perceives to be a dream, only to find out that it has all happened before and that what he experienced is a warning for the future.

4. The Sleepless Void is the darkest, most brooding song on the album not only musicaly but also lyrically. This time our protagonist finds himself in land where all things “horror” live and thrive, he encounters everything from warewolves, vampires, creepy little “ring” girls, to Azathoth himself. In around this part of the story our protagonist starts to get tired and weary of all these changing landscapes, wishing it all to end.

5. Arid Trials And Barren Sands is a sludgier start to the song takes us to a desert landscape where, water is a scarcity and the extreme heat leaves our protagonist delirous and unsure of everything thats happening. Is he seeing all his different lives through the multiverse because he’s supposed to be some kind of savior, or does any of it even matter? The music lends itself to the lyrics like sounds incorporating leads with mirage-like tremolo effects and some “larger than life” choruses helping to build his thoughts of grandeur.

6. Lost In Fractured Reveries On the last stop through his journey on the prog-iest song on the album he finds himself floating within the cosmos, seeing all of time and every universe being woven together like a web, contemplating his entire existance, whether he ever even mattered in any time or in any universe. The jumping time signatures and tempo changes lend a hand to the uncertainty that feels within the song.

7. Trading Thoughts For Sleep slows everything down and turns up the melancholy. An in-depth view of how our protagonist feels after everything he’s experienced, his struggle with finding meaning in life, his place in everything and the anxiety of it all. The feeling that if he were no longer around nothing would change and things would just move on, and the relief it would bring him to no longer feel that way.

==========================================

Fun Facts – Story Angles:

1. The concept of the album was actually loosely based on a dream that I (Aaron) had where I was standing in my bedroom at home one minute, and then a giant flash of light struck, and almost like a switch being flipped I was in a totally different place but while Ive never seen this place before I knew it as if it was my own home, feeling like it was my home in another reality.

2. Symbiotics Growth’s first album was released just as Covid hit and went into all the lockdowns. We were never able to tour around our first album, so we went straight into the writing of “Beyond The Sleepless Aether”.

3. Dan and Aaron live over an hour away from each other with Devin in the middle and with Guitars, bass and vocals being recorded at Aarons and drums at Dans, the recording process for our respective parts were done mostly alone, we would send files back and forth after we would finish recording our parts so we could review them to make the final cut.

Italian experimental metal outfit SVNTH‘s new album, “Pink Noise Youth,” will be unveiled on April 18th, 2025, via These Hands Melt Records. They have shared two singles from the record, “Cinnamon Moon” and “Perfume,” in the lead-up to its release. Their next offering in preview to their fourth full-length “Narrow, Narrow,” a song with a dreamy Deftones-like intro soaked in delay and reverb that evolves immediately into a hardcore-oriented explosion with black metal screams alternated with emotional shoegaze-y sections.

“As much as the song “Wings of the Ark” from the previous album “Spring in Blue” was based on the experience of a loss during childhood, this song does the same but in the late youth phase of life. The final refrain, “We will never come back again, but we’ll always be here’ is intended to be considered a sort of anthem that reflects on the shortness of our life as humans compared to the eternity of our memory that remained in the people we left,” adds the band.

Single Artwork- Narrow, Narrow – by Tryfar

“Pink Noise Youth” is SVNTH‘s fourth studio album to follow their 2020 “Spring in Blue”. This new full-length demonstrates SVNTH‘s continued evolution, deliberately transcending genre boundaries by combining elements of hardcore, metal, shoegaze, and post-rock with unexpected instrumental choices. The album promises to take listeners on a cohesive journey through its carefully crafted track sequence, maintaining the band’s tradition of creating conceptually unified works.

“This album is also full of new things, starting from a consistent line-up change of more than half of the band, the introduction of many new instruments such as electric Indian sitar, clean singing, classical and 12 strings guitars, and in addition songwriting goes back to a more traditional song in opposition to the more suite-like approach of the previous album. People will surely welcome it with curiosity,” adds the band.

The music of SVNTH has always been aiming to give the listener emotional vibes. This record, in particular is conceptually based on exploring late youth emotions, and the music is created for reflecting such instability.

About:

With a various background of musical influences and artistic inspirations, SVNTH (written all caps and pronounced “Seventh”, formerly “Seventh Genocide”) from Rome, Italy has been shaping a unique equilibrium of sounds through the years moving across a huge variety of directions on the palette of contemporary alternative music to create a distinctive soundtrack for inner emotions, life scenarios, and existentialist questioning. Expanding the energy of black and post-metal over the mellow and contemplative boundaries of shoegaze, art pop, and cinematic post-rock.

From the vivid early black gaze melodies of the debut “Breeze of Memories” (2015) to the long song structures with acoustic overtures and Godspeed You! Black Emperor inspired sections of the monumental “Toward Akina” (2017); SVNTH confirms this more complex approach on the double LP “Spring in Blue” (2020), the childhood chapter of a trilogy of colors based on emotions in different phases of life.

The upcoming “Pink Noise Youth” (2025) gets back to a more traditional song format, introducing a unique use of Indian sitar, and an array of acoustic instruments and singing expressions, which develops SVNTH to a one-of-a-kind sound and personality.

As of today, the band has done several tours and single shows all over Europe and in the USA touching even non-frequently toured countries such as Albania and Turkey and performing at notable festivals like Rockstadt and Frantic Fest, bringing a defining cathartic live energy.

“Do you dig blackgaze, in the vein of Deafheaven and Alcest? What about post-hardcore? What about a mixture of the two?! Well my dears, you’re in a bit of luck, because the Italian experimental band Svnth just released their new single “Cinnamon Moon.” Give it a lil listen” – Metal Sucks

“This is not music that settles into one feeling; it is an album that lives in the tension between them, where grief fuels rebellion, where pain and resilience are inseparable, and where every song feels like a battle between destruction and redemption. In the end, it does not leave the listener broken, but neither does it offer false comfort. It does not promise that everything will be okay, but it does promise that the struggle is worth something. It is an album that carries both the weight of sorrow and the fire of defiance, the burden of grief and the light of something that refuses to die. 9/10″ – Metal-Temple (2025 – Pink Noise Youth)

“This is arguably SVNTH’s defining effort to date, and will hopefully see them gain a foothold within the scene at large…” – Distorted Sound Magazine (2020 – Spring in Blue)

“”The music seems to wail and mournfully murmur like spirits who have lost their way in a shimmering desert world. Those lonesome laments unfold into a momentum of neck-snapping beats, raking chords, and high, harrowing shrieks” – No Clean Singing (2020 – Spring in Blue)

“SVNTH sets out in hopes of bridging the rift of a jealous god, welding genres into music that can appeal to all sensibilities, without sacrificing integrity (or intensity)” – Toilet ov Hell (2020 – Spring in Blue)

“”Distortions, speed and sinister atmosphere as the tradition black imposes but also delicate chiselations from which a light filters that suggests possible trajectories capable of questioning the dictatorship of matter, Spring in Blue is an album that is not afraid to face the recognized columns of Ercole gender and to push it far beyond 8.5/10” – Grind On The Road

“an interesting take on black metal, delving deeper into psychedelia and post-rock influences on new EP SVNTH. Though the tremolo-picked guitar playing and blast beats accompanied by howled screams still remain, they are met with shimmering melodies, ambient stretches and Pink Floyd-esque guitars.” – Decibel Magazine (2018 – EP SVNTH)

Edmonton, AB heavy metal masters STRIKER are nominated for their third Juno Award for “Metal/Hard Music Album of The Year” for their 2024 album “ULTRAPOWER” released via their indie label Record Breaking Records.

“Honoured to be among the best of the best of the best along with our fellow JUNO nominees this year for our 3rd consecutive nomination! This means a lot to us; we always give it our all and are ready for anything. Tough competition this year; it’s a brawl at the pub, but no matter what, we will live to fight another day,” adds the band.

STRIKER has been nominated alongside Anciients, Devin Townsend, Kittie, and Spiritbox.

2025 – JUNO Awards – METAL/HARD MUSIC ALBUM OF THE YEAR / ALBUM DE MUSIQUE MÉTAL/HARD DE L’ANNÉE

Anciients – Beyond the Reach of the Sun – Season of Mist / The Orchard
Devin Townsend – PowerNerd – InsideOut Music / Sony
Kittie – Fire – Sumerian / Virgin
Spiritbox – The Fear of Fear – BMG / Universal
Striker – ULTRAPOWER – Independent

The full list of 2025 Nominees and Categories can be found at https://junoawards.ca/2025-juno-awards-nominees/

STRIKER’s latest album “ULTRAPOWER” was produced by Josh Schroeder (Lorna Shore, Tallah, King 810). The seventh full-length from STRIKER follows their Juno Award-winning self-released record “Play to Win” (2018) unleashed on their label Record Breaking Records.

With the band writing material since 2018, “ULTRAPOWER” is a collection of Striker tinkering and exploring new avenues. From the album’s opening track “Circle of Evil”, a Malmsteen-esque metal banger about secret societies and the evil dealings behind closed doors to their previously released single “BEST of the BEST of the BEST” serving up some big riffs and hockey arena vocals to “Blood Magic”, which might be one of Striker‘s most progressive songs, taking cues from bands like King Diamond, with its unconventional structure and punctuated guitar solos. From the band delving into their obsession for late 80s AOR and pop rock with “City Calling”, an ode to 1987, and bands like Toto and Kenny Loggins with their hook-powered albums. To fans experiencing the band’s first attempt at a synth-wave track with “Live To Fight Another Day”, this new offering sees Striker making a shredding love letter to the hard-rocking era of guilty pleasures.

“ULTRAPOWER” was released on February 2nd, 2024, and is available at https://www.striker-metal.com/shop/ (CD, Vinyl, Digital)

About: Blending classic heavy metal, hard rock, and ’80s hair metal, Striker has been making shredtacular anthems since 2007. The band has toured multiple times across Europe and North America, along with festival appearances at 70,000 Tons of Metal, Bang Your Head Festival (Germany), and mor,e to add to the almost 1000 shows performed in their decade-plus career. The band has been honoured with multiple Best Album awards in their home country of Canada from the JUNO Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, and the Edmonton Music Awards. Since their inception, Striker has released seven studio albums Eyes in the Night (2010, Iron Kodex), Armed to The Teeth (2012, Napalm), City of Gold (2014, Napalm), Stand in the Fire (2016, Record Breaking), Striker (2017, Record Breaking), Play to Win (2018, Record Breaking), Ultrapower (2024, Record Breaking).

“If you liked the last three albums (as much as I did), Ultrapower will equally satisfy. I know this one will be in my top 10 albums of the year. 8.5/10″ – Bravewords

“All in all, Striker’s Ultrapower may be their finest album to date. Their traditional, “keep it true,” heavy metal has never been more fresh, creative, and versatile, and so also, breathing new life into this classic genre. Easily recommended. 5/5″ – Dangerdog Music Reviews

““Ultrapower” is quite frankly a magnificent album. It has a feel good 80’s movie soundtrack aura about it with the spirit of artists such as John Farnham and Stan Bush standing tall alongside pure 80’s metal throwback. If you love 80’s rock and metal then this album is going to have you grinning from ear to ear. I think I’m gonna be grinning for days after several listens. Some fans of Striker’s more speed metal inclined sound may find this album a bit jarring but I can safely say it is the best album they have done and they have released some corkers. For the pure joy it has given me, this album is going to be hard to top in 2024 and we are still in the early part of the year.” – The Razor’s Edge

“Striker are more-than-ready to show us all the power of heavy music with Ultrapower, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the ride with one of the best (of the best of the best) bands of the current Canadian landscape.” The Headbanging Moose

“an album that is bold, daring and as mentioned shows a band that are not afraid of fusing styles of music together… there are simply to many high quality songs on this album that simply blows me away. This is a polished, highly refined album with top quality production! 9/10” – The NWOTHM

“I really like the diversity in this album. 4/5” – KNAC

“I’m giving this one an 8 of 10 “Flaming Fists”. You can tell there’s a lot of work put into the album, they don’t half-ass anything. The production was good, it’s really hard to make amazing Arena-style rock without a decent budget, but they did a solid job…. if you liked the late 80’s and early 90’s bands you’ll really dig this. Overall, I’m really happy and thankful for this band continuing to do what they do.” – Rock Rage Radio

“The heavy, power, and traditional melodic metal landscape is in great shape thanks to bands like Striker producing high quality songwriting year after year. These Canadians continue to explore horizons while still maintaining the endearing qualities that helped put them on the map in the first place since the late 2000’s. Ultrapower is the seventh full-length studio record, and probably their most varied attack to date – incorporating everything from speed/thrash to AOR and old Wild West vibes. ” – Dead Rhetoric

“Striker’s execution and sense of humor makes for an enjoyable ride.” – Heavy Music HQ

“How do you say when bowling when you clear all the pins with a throw? It is a strike! STRIKER has achieved a great strike with their album „ Ultrapower “. All songs on this album are real hits! Each song has its own character and rocks what it takes. It is a wonderful homage to the 80 ’ years. I would say: The STRIKER engine is in full swing!” – Metal-Heads.de

Montreal, QC – March 26, 2025

Out Now! Toronto Prog DEREV’s Debut Album “Troubled Mind” + Cross-Canada Tour Dates (QC/ON/MB/SK/BC)

+ New Video “Tides of Time”

L-R (Clockwise) – Live Lineup – Ran Zehavi (Keys), Stan Komarovsky (Bass), Armando Bablanian (Guitar), Mike Symons (Vocals), Michel Karakach (Drums)

Toronto, Canada’s Derev is proud to release their first full length, “Troubled Mind”, now available as of March 26th on digital platforms (links below).

The follow-up to their 2021 debut EP “Leap of Faith,” “Troubled Mind” takes a deep dive into the intricacies of the human psyche, addressing a spectrum of mental health issues with each track, ranging from temporary mental instability to more severe conditions such as schizophrenia, cognitive immobility (a fixation on the past), and depression stemming from loss.

Offering a diverse range of sounds from mellow, calm tracks to adrenaline-pumping heavy headbangers while maintaining their distinctive progressive rock sound, enriched with Middle Eastern influences. Incorporating more prominent keyboard parts, experimenting with various time signatures, and introducing new instruments such as the Cajon, Darbuka, and electronic elements. This evolution showcases the band’s innovative spirit and commitment to pushing musical boundaries.

The band adds:

“This album is very personal and introspective. It’s full of memorable songs and parts to listen to and digest, both from a musical and lyrical perspective. Every song tackles a different state of mind and takes the listener into their thoughts of a mental state that they can relate to. As this one marks our second official release, we think the fans will be excited about hearing what Derev still has to offer. They’re in for a crazy ride full of energetic ups and heartbreaking downs.”

Derev was conceived after founding member and drummer Michel Karakach, after fleeing the war in the Middle East and finding refuge in Toronto, Canada, reunited with his best friend, guitarist Armando Bablanian, to turn what was once a mere childhood dream into a powerful reality.

Derev‘s dynamic lineup now includes bassist Stan Komarovsky, providing the backbone of Derev‘s sound, and keyboardist Ran Zehavi from the progressive rock band Scalar, adding depth and complexity. Leading the live charge is frontman and vocalist Mike Symons, who has replaced previous singer Adel Saflou, whose recorded vocals are featured on “Troubled Mind”.

Recommended for fans of Opeth, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Soen, and Riverside, “Troubled Mind” is available at https://www.derevmusic.com/store (on Vinyl, CD, Tour Pass) and all digital platforms (Spotify, Bandcamp).

In additional news, Derev is touring in Ontario to support “Troubled Mind” and will continue their road shows across Western Canada for May (listed below).

About: “Divided by war, United by music”

Derev is a progressive rock band captivating global audiences with its innovative blend of progressive rock and traditional Middle Eastern music.

After fleeing the war in the Middle East and finding refuge in Toronto, Canada, founding member and Drummer Michel Karakach reunited with his best friend, guitarist Armando Bablanian, to turn what was once a mere childhood dream into a powerful reality.

Derev’s debut release, “Leap of Faith,” melded the raw energy of hard rock with the rich textures of the traditional Middle Eastern music they grew up with, offering a fresh perspective on topics often overlooked in modern music. This distinctive sound quickly caught the attention of both local and international audiences, propelling Derev into a series of successful shows across Canada.

The band’s dynamic lineup now includes bassist Stan Komarovsky, providing the backbone of Derev’s sound, and keyboardist Ran Zehavi from the progressive rock band Scalar, adding depth and complexity. Leading the live charge is frontman and vocalist Mike Symons, who replaces previous singer Adel Saflou, who is featured on their forthcoming studio offering “Troubled Mind”. Symons’ compelling presence and vocal prowess complete the live ensemble.

As Derev gears up to release their anticipated second album, “Troubled Mind,” on March 26th, 2025, they continue to carve out a unique niche in the music world. Their innovative sound promises to captivate new listeners and industry veterans alike. Keep an eye on Derev as they redefine what rock music can be.

“Toronto prog quintet Derev will release their debut full-length album, Troubled Mind, on March 26. The yearning, epic tones of Cyclone is the second single to be taken from the upcoming album, and Derev will be touring throughout Ontario and Quebec over the coming months to support the new album.” – Prog Magazine – Great new prog you must hear… Tracks Of The Week – Cyclone – Feb 21, 2025

“The best part of the album (Troubled Mind) is the band’s ability to carry strong emotions into their music. Many of the songs are not complicated, but they are loaded with feelings. I’m not sure I have heard a Progressive album that is this unpretentious and this emotional at the same time. 8/10” Metal-Temple

“its eight tracks draws us into a music that combines intensity and peaceful atmospheres of old school prog. The melodies thus highlight many sound universes from one composition to another including beautiful vocal harmonies and important instrumental parts… Derev delivers retro-sounding music with plenty of late 70s and early 80s progressive influences… Troubled Mind, with its instantly relatable melodies, is a resounding success. 4/5” – Prog Critique

“every minute is a blessing to your progressive ears. Porcupine Tree and Opeth enthusiasts might appreciate this.” – Rock Portaal

“For the prog-rock group Derev, this new work continues to carry on its shoulders the burden of the misfortune of living in times of war, which unites two childhood friends: Michel Karakach (battery) and Armando Bablanian (guitar), who after fleeing the war in the Middle East and taking refuge in Toronto (Canadá), meet again through music to reflect on pain, loss and, above all, persistence…. This album represents a profound act of emotional liberation both for its creators and for those who immerse themselves in listening to it.” – Dargedik

“Derev’s sound combines the energy and intensity of metal music with the atmospheric sound of old-school progressive rock, while incorporating elements of their Arabic and Armenian heritage.” – The Prog Space

Canadian aggro-metal CHÜZO is unshackling their menacing new video for the track “Brutalator” from their latest EP “M.T.M.D (Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay)” released this past October and produced with Kevin Jardine (Slaves On Dope, Uplift Recording Studio).

The song is about the “Brutalor”, a character that comes to each town or village to reclaim social justice to anyone who has been mistreated by greedy and evil parts of humanity.

Guitarist Cristian S explains further:

“The Brutalator” is the opening track of our latest EP, “M.T.M.D.” (Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay). This song was a collaboration between Carlos G., Mischa M., and I, Cristian S., the leader and founder of CHÜZO, after spending about a year experimenting with its structure. The arrangement was developed by Carlos and me, but it lacked lyrics for quite some time because I struggled to find the right phrasing and inspiration. After rehearsing the song for a while and having a profound discussion with Mischa about anti-heroes and other tracks in Metal, such as “The Wizard” by Black Sabbath or “Edgecrusher” by Fear Factory, Mischa crafted the lyrics that would become the final version for “Brutalator.” Her lyrics tell the story of an anti-hero betrayed by life and loved ones, discarded and mistreated—a constant victim of societal injustices. Bound by honor and revenge, he trains himself and returns to fulfill the wishes of the unfairly treated, the exploited, and the oppressed of an unjust society, seeking vengeance and enforcing his version of justice against those who instigate injustices against the weak and abused. Her lyrics perfectly complement the song structure, giving birth to our best track. She also created the intro, a beautiful piano arrangement that sets the tone for the song.

CHÜZO‘s new EP “M.T.M.D (Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay)” is a three-track record that marks the next chapter and a true representation of what the quartet’s sound is meant to be.

“This new EP was to showcase our new lineup with our newest songs that are truly representative of our musical style, a style that we proudly call ‘Aggro-Metal.’ Very aggressive metal songs that have relatable themes that anyone can listen to and understand. This EP is our audio shotgun blast to the world to pay attention to and to mosh intensively during our live sets,” adds guitarist Cristian S.

CHÜZO‘s new lineup features the ensnaring vocals of Taiwanese Brazilian transplant Mischa M joining local first-generation Chilean Canadian and mastermind Cristian S. along with Carlos G from Venezuela and Alex S from Russia who all have found Montreal, Canada to be their home-to-breed their blender of grindcore, Swedish death metal, thrash, and hardcore punk to transform a sub-genre dubbed ‘Aggro Metal’.

The EP’s lyrics are driven by self-reflection and daily struggles. The inspiration for writing comes from life experiences and trying to live past them, especially the traumatic ones. Using all the bad energy from bad experiences to create something positive for yourself and the world. This EP speaks of vengeance and the bad side of dedicating your life to achieving your desired revenge despite your own life and sanity. Brutal Social Justice.

For fans of Sepultura (Cavalera Bros era 84-96), At the Gates, Napalm Death, Slipknot, and Fuck the Facts, “M.T.M.D (Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay)” was released on November 15, 2024.

Canadian College Radio Loud Charts – December 2024 – top 20 loud #20 – CHÜZO – M.T.M.D.

“‘A Brazilian vocalist, a Chilean guitarist, a Russian bassist and a Venezuelan drummer walk into a Montreal metal bar’ might sound like the beginning of a borderline funny joke, but it, in a roundabout way, speaks to the christening of thrash, punk, death-beat quartet CHÜZO. The band’s latest EP — M.T.M.D.(Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay) — is the latest in a long line of releases since forming in 2020 and sees the light of day today. The band has a lot to say about their latest endeavour, but fans of old Sepultura, Napalm Death, At the Gates and Fuck the Facts should find something of interest ” – Decibel Magazine

““Bruised and Broken” is definitely a rager. Mischa and Christian belt out the words in a tandem of furious screams and monstrous roars. Behind them, the song discharges high-speed percussive obliteration and punk beats, a violent churn of high-grit riffage, and bowel-loosening bass-quakes. The band also work in mean-eyed slashing chugs, a brutalizing breakdown that seems to get more thuggish but no less head-hooking as the seconds pass, an explosion of boiling and battering grindcore mayhem, and another hardcore beatdown that’s probably a sure-fire mosh trigger in a live show — with Mischa‘s screaming voice still coming for your throat with no-holds-barred intensity. Just this one song proves that for Chüzo the label “Aggro Metal” isn’t false advertising. It’s a gut-slugging, bone-smashing, vocally blistering, and viciously eviscerating outburst, and it also proves to be a pretty addictive piece of rage-fueled catharsis too. Speaking of live shows, the video gives a good sense of what the band’s live sets are about, and a good sense of how much fun they had beating the shit out of things in that rage cage.” – No Clean Singing

“The band has just released M.T.M.D., an acronym that stands for Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay, to testify how high the group’s ambitions are. The perspective could at first glance be assimilated to that of the variegated groove metal universe, but on closer inspection there is much more in the folds of the individual songs, characterized by the desire to release vital energy and give voice to impulses, emotions, feelings. The sound matrix is brutal, at times unstoppable, and characterized by the fierce performance of the gritty Mischa Mai microphones: combining power, imagination and a pinch of healthy madness the quartet gave full demonstration of their qualities.” – Rock Hard Italy

“M.T.M.D is a crucial chapter in Chüzo’s evolution, showcasing a lineup that’s finally found its voice. Their journey is a testament to the transformative power of music and the ability to channel personal struggles into a collective outcry for justice.” – Amplify The Noise

“It might be something of a cliché but it remains true; this isn’t simply an EP. It’s a promo for helping Chüzo find a major label for a debut full length… [8/10]” – Metal Noise

“CHÜZO have achieved several things on “MTMD (Maximum Threshold, Minimum Decay)” that other bands dream of for an entire career. On the one hand, the clever balancing act is impressive between old school credibility and new school influences. A factor that plays a striking role in the overall absolutely high-class work is that Canadians walk in a straightforward and focused manner in the ear. The three songs on the EP entitled “MTMD” are fast-paced in nature, mill into the ear canals at massive speed and –’s most important aspect – remains there… The EP is catchy, intense and yet has matured, multi-layered and serious Half-life to be equipped. Conclusion: Check in, buy, leave, killer!” – Metal Division Magazine

“Their common points: knowing how to intelligently mix the best of grindcore mixed with Swedish death, with a touch of hardcore thrash from a punk perspective. Chüzo calls his music, « Aggro Metal ». The theme of their songs, telling their life experiences, shouting their anger at the traumas experienced. The kind of text that allows you to let off steam and make yourself understood even if you have gaps in English. Chüzo is a sort of best of aggressive metal music with this vengeful punk attitude: Chüzo would be a disciple of Napalm Death. Damn their music is good to hear. For fans of Sepultura and the Cavalera brothers, Chüzo is for you, Cristian S. sings with the same kind of vocal intonation as Max C. For Christmas, I would like Chüzo to tour the old continent within the next 2 years. If I had the means, I would participate financially in their future tour. There are small (et larger) concert halls waiting for you. The day we can do a concert at the Kjbi, Chuzo is automatically on the bill” – Margoth PDF Webzine
